The director of the best GOW game is BACK!

GribbleGrunger3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

I'm pretty excited too. It also looks like Santa Monica is about to sprout a third team with Cory Barlog at the helm!

GraveLord3937d ago

Really? A 3rd team? Help me out here..

Team 1: God of War Ascension
Team 2: The Order?
Team 3: Cory Barlogs new game

Is this right?

Sevir3937d ago

More than likely 2 teams, SSM is a huge studio, and they assist in small indie titles to partnering with other medium indie studios, like Lightbox, Ready At Dawn, Eat Sleep Play and Superbot,

Todd's Team just Wrapped up work on Ascension, And Stig's been slaving away since GOW3 ended, his team isn't doing God of War,

And Ready At Dawn is 80 person strong with collaboration with Santa Monica studios, So I'm sure Cory is Heading up Todd's Team to bring something new...

And Please Let God of War REST for Fuck sakes, The series is going through fatigue, Ascensions was unnecessary because we know what would happen, just let that franchise rest for 5 years hell bring it back at the end of the PS4 life cycle with new gameplay innovations but let the game rest... Kratos has done well.

JP13693937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

GraveLord-
Ready at Dawn is making The Order. So if there are three teams it could be:

1) The GOW:A team
2) Stig's team
3) Corey's team

Holy. Shit.

Edit: While I agree that GOD should be left alone for a while, I don't think it needs to be half a decade. What made Ascension feel unnecessary was:
1) It was another prequel
2) Ghost of Sparta came out between GOW3 and Ascension.

If they stuck to three or four year breaks between games (including handhelds) the feeling of fatigue would subside. But please, revert back to the old parry system.

abzdine3937d ago

great news for gamers, as i said in my post about the Sony surprise.

PLASTICA-MAN3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

WOW! This makes excited more than the reveal of the PS4 itself! The directornof the best, longest, toughest, strongest GOW ever! Just close your eyes and sleep well, the next GOW will be THE game of next-gen !

@ Sevir, yes they should let GOW rest, BUT they MUST start working on it FROM NOW. You talk as if they can pill another GOW in a year like the abused series of Assassins' Creed (not Assassin's Creed since there are so many now and they are redundant) and the COD series. PS3 was released in 2006 and GOW3 in 2010. Keep in mind with every console generation, they need to start an engine from scratch, especially when you want innovative gameplay and more freedom. Now with the return of the best director of the series, this is SURELY a confirmation that GOW4 will be epic and will revolutionize the series and the genre. PLEASE more GOW yes, BUT better GOW, we never say no!

soniqstylz3937d ago

PLASTICA-MAN:

True the PS3 was released in 2006 with GoW3 in 2010. However, GoW2 came out on the PS2 in 2007, with GoW:COO on the PSP in 2008.

ABizzel13937d ago

@Sevir

I completely agree. God of War needs a rest. I love the franchise, but I couldn't even bring myself to playthough Ascension in 2 0 3 settings like I normally do (I bought it day 1, and still haven't beat it).

It's an amazing franchise, but I need a break after beating God of War 3, God of War HD collection, then God of War Saga (PSP versions).

If they want to make a hack and slash game, then they should make Heavenly Sword 2 instead.

GribbleGrunger3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

I'm with people on the giving GOW a rest ... Unless they make it more of an open world game with RPG elements and a fantastic story! Then I'm in again.

badz1493936d ago

@soniqstylz

GoW CoO was not made by SSM it was made by Ready At Dawn. Ghost of Sparta too

Hype has risen. Next gen.... Let's go!

bowserone3937d ago

Three is the best. Just god and titan killing, no long bs dungeons or puzzles to extend the games length and a satisfying conclusion. Hell gow3 gave us the head rip scene!

ABizzel13937d ago

Gameplay and graphics go to 3 (although Ascension has bad@$$ graphics as well).

Story and adventure goes to 2.

scofios3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Home sweet home

showtimefolks3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

sony santa monica is huge develop/publisher, they help publish a lot of games for smaller developers and help with development when needed

ready at dawn are also working with SSM

GOW war
Stig's team(director of GOW3 working on a new IP)
now a 3rd team most likely

only thing left is david jaffe, who i also believe is working on a new game

him and david jaffe are great buddies could we really get a game where both work on it again? damn

very excited

you can hate on sony all you want but respect the fact they actually let developers develop even if its not gonna set sales record, to us gamers its a great thing, business wise it may not make sense

and that is why i respect sony/PS brand

Sy_Wolf3937d ago

They aren't a publisher.

showtimefolks3937d ago

Sy_Wolf

actually they are but under sony, but SSM acts as publishers to smaller studios

that's why many times you see SSM name after developer, its still under sony though

but i guess you are right everything is under sony since they own sony santa monica

nosferatuzodd3937d ago

all i have to say is nice very nice indeed

ape0073936d ago (Edited 3936d ago )

im now on my 4th hour in GOW asentions

it's freaking awesome, the gfx are great too, some parts almost looked like CG

so please we want a nextgen GOW game, just imagine that.....

cyclindk3936d ago

YES! Watch the behind the scenes of those God of Wars, 1 and 2, he was a perfectionist. Pushed everybody 150 %. I still remember that Pegasus part... amazing visuals for PS2.

Bathyj3936d ago

there was nothing wrong with ascension persay, it probably played better than any other game in the series. but where as gow 3 was mind blowing in its spectacle, ascension was underwhelming and mundane. it just didn't have the wow moments the series is renowned for.

it's like assassin's creed for me at the moment. it just needs to go away for a while and give us time to miss it.

Abash3937d ago

He's working on something "freaking huge"? Too hyped for words

FlameHawk3937d ago

They are teasing God of War IV, I'm sure of it!

ZodTheRipper3937d ago

I realy don't think that they are already doing GoW4 ...and I really hope they are right despite being one of the biggest GoW fans out there. They need to experiment with their talent into another direction imo ...just once. After that, they can tackle another GoW with some fresh ideas.

M-M3937d ago

Too soon to be honest. Even though I would like to see another GoW, I think it would be best to give it a break for a while. Warhawk 2 would be amazing though even though it's not likely lol.

Thatguy-3103937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Can't wait for gamescon baby!

ActiveRespawn3937d ago

Excited, but leery. God of War could really use a new perspective, instead of an old one. Ascension was great, but it looked a little dated. Hope he takes it to a new level.

HiddenMission3937d ago

Ascension looked a little dated...ok yeah I have GoW 3, the Killzone series, Uncharted series and TLoU and it looks sharper than all of them. So many improvements to the series with better visuals so yeah it was better. It had more varied set piece than part 3 with some amazingly fun additions to the the SP mechanics.

I still think part 2 is the best in the series so I can only imagine if Cory did another GoW on the PS4...minds would melt!

Eldyraen3937d ago (Edited 3937d ago )

Personally I can see what he probably meant--gameplay wise at least it was a throwback as it lacked the advancements that 3 introduced (much more distinct weapon types, etc). Visually it looked good but bit "safe" IMO (3 was epic and Ascension was no 3).

It was a prequel of course but doesn't change it felt more "retro" at many times and initially at least I almost felt it was a Vita game that got a fresh coat of paint (ignore graphics and then look at it next to other GoW games). That might sound harsh but it just lacked something in many places but was still clearly "GoW".

In movie terms it was Godfather 3: it has its fans but was not a necessity nor as memorable for most.

HiddenMission3937d ago

@Eldyraen

I would say it still had way more mechanics improvements over part 3 and below is a list.

1. Enemy weapon pick ups.
2. Chain grapple enemy that can be used to crowd control.
3. Chain grapple environment allowing you to move while pulling object and still being able to attack.
4. Platforming mechanic improvements allowing for more dynamic navigation of the landscape.
5. Puzzle object movement much smoother and quick.
6. More interactive cinematic non-boss fight scenes that are controllable.
7. Elemental powers given to blades allowing for more strategic types of combat play.
8. Time alteration mechanic.
9. Assist character mechanic.

That's just off the top of my head in a matter of mins and I know that there are more.

All part 3 really had was slightly altered Blades of Chaos and a few large cinematic set pieces. Neither entry is the top of the series that is still held by part 2 but I feel that the mechanics in Ascension are greater than they are in part 3.

Add to that the set piece variety in part 3 is a lot more repetitive compared to Ascension which had a lot more set pieces and almost no back tracking. My biggest gripes with Ascension are that the story enemies are are little lackluster and the replay incentives are not up to standards...should have had more requirements for unlocking actual Kratos skins like in part 1 and 2.

At the end of the day each to his own right.

ape0073936d ago

no just no, they can add a bit more freedom but a complete open world?

Cory Barlog: Sony Santa Monica Working on a "Lot of Different Things"

Santa Monica Studio Creative Director Cory Barlog states that the studio is "spread out on a "lot of different things" currently.

Jin_Sakai551d ago

Likely a new game then another God of War title. Can’t wait to see something new though! We desperately need new IP imo.

excaliburps550d ago

I'd bet that's what they're working no.

darthv72550d ago

Where do you think they can go next with the GoW series?

chrisx550d ago

Well anyone who's finished GoW 2018 knows that the Egyptian, Celtic and Shinto pantheons were teased. Either of those will most likely be the next way the series goes.

darthv72550d ago

Thanks Chris, Im playing through the 2018 one now (late to the party). Egyptian sounds like it would be really cool. To fight against Set and Ra would be epic.

MrNinosan550d ago

A DLC or spinoff with Atreus and Angrboda is my guess.

-Foxtrot550d ago

Hopefully a new IP than God of War

I loved Ragnarok but it’s time to let the franchise rest again so it’s even more special when it comes back.

550d ago
Nitrowolf2550d ago

I would like GOWro take a decent rest too.come back much later, but let’s see what else Santa Monica cna pull with with a newIP

MrVux000550d ago

Yea, i think Cory and the other team are working on a new IP.

I think after Ragnarok, they should take some time to prepare for the next entry of God of War.

Pyrofire95550d ago

I'm shocked they have managed to only make GoW games for 18 years.
Like not knocking them, I'm just surprised they haven't wanted to do something else enough.

RaidenBlack550d ago

Plz, let one of them be the revival of the rumored/leaked Barlog's sci-fi project.

RaidenBlack550d ago (Edited 550d ago )

P.S. - Barlog, once also expressed in a tweet, his interest in remaking silent hill 1.

Tzuno550d ago (Edited 550d ago )

I think Atreus will take the crown in future games and they will conclude Kratos saga in the next installment

MrVux000550d ago (Edited 550d ago )

I doubt i would play that sort of God of War game (if you are implying a GOW game without Kratos, that is).

Shadowsteal550d ago

You'd really not play another potential banger of a game just because Kratos isn't in it?

MrVux000550d ago

@Shadowsteal

Yes, based on my standards / preferences i would likely not play it. Whether or not that game would be a banger without Kratos is strongly debatable.

Sony's Santa Monica Studio continues to lead with 'God of War Ragnarök'

Santa Monica Studio was once a champion for weird and odd games that would come to the PlayStation platform. Today, it's all 'God of War.'

MrChow666551d ago

The graphics are amazing, the attetion to detail is mindblowing as well as the performances, music...the production values in general are on another level, I need to play more but gameplay seems very similar to it's predecessor, not a bad thing at all but I do miss the full-on action and platforming bits of the old games, SSM should make a classic style Gow game on the side.

Einhander1971551d ago

Totally agree the original games are still my favourites, love em!!

Shane Kim551d ago

Loved and still love the old ones. But personally, I couldn't go back.

ClayRules2012551d ago

Yeah, I loved and still do love 1-2 still. But I couldn’t go back either.

darthv72550d ago

Its funny you say that as between bouts of the 2018 one I been playing ascension. Its cool to trade off between the two styles.

ClayRules2012551d ago

Yeah, it feels similar to 2018’s game, no doubt. But as you said, that’s not a bad thing. Not at all. I know some criticized the game for feeling the “Same” but I wonder why some expected another BIG leap in the gameplay department from 2018’s game which is only 4 years old… I mean, looking at The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2 I can see why there’s such a similar look/feel in some sense, but also a drastic change to the gameplay overall that has them look worlds apart - of course, being a generation “PS3/PS4” tech helps haha, but nonetheless, the motion matching technology, along with the best in the industry animators at Naughty Dog and their realistic animations all combine to make a gameplay experience that’s incredible and far superior to its predecessor on PS3. As we know, God of War, with this iteration and the timeline didn’t have that luxury, but it didn’t need it, looking at the end results. The gameplay is similar to 2018’s but better and polished to the T! And man, those boss fights, unrivaled in my honest opinion.

I do have ONE complaint tho…those stupid little bugs - same as the first game, that fly around, they’re green and explode on you, oh they really tick me off all over again, more so here, especially with how SSM have mixed the variety of the fights etc😂😂 alright, I just suck lol.

Crows90550d ago

Even bringing up the topic that this is like god of war 2018 is ridiculously naive or dumb. So please do tell me how different the previous god of wars were from each other? They all played roughly the same except for maybe ascension. Each were an evolution from what came before.

Thundercat77551d ago

God of War was and today is still a masterpiece.

I'm greatful to being able to play such quality experiences.

God Of War Ragnarok Devs Thought The Game Was "Not Good" Just Three Months Ago, Director Says

God of War Ragnarök is already being hailed as game of the year material, but it's creation was anything but easygoing. GQ talks to Sony Santa Monica's Cory Barlog and Eric Williams about the making of a PS4 & PS5 classic.

Well those fears were misplaced.

I've put in about 8 and half hrs so far, finding every chest doing any side quests I come across.

The game plays amazing and looks amazing, Santa Monica have knocked it out of the park again!!!

Oh and yes the side quests are as good as the reviews have stated so far, have completed and honestly they may have ad well been main story quests.

Seems harder than gow 2018 aswell, so it's defs worth while trying to clear areas out before moving on.

Bathyj558d ago

It reminds me of ninja gaiden in the sense that even the lowest level enemy can kill you if you're not paying attention to what you're doing. He can't afford to straight around being cocky have to be on the ball

lucian229558d ago

On normal or easy mode? When I started the last game I started on hard. I was killed in one hit until later when I got stronger.

Made the valkyries a royal pain fighting for first time though lol.

Wondering if starting this on hard mode too is a Good idea

Crows90558d ago

@lucian229
Yes start on hard. From what I've heard lower difficulties start okay but then drop off to very easy. I usually play all my games on hard to accommodate that inevitable decline in difficulty as you get stronger and more experienced with the game.

Bathyj558d ago

I'm playing on hard, but not really hard. The one above normal. Seems like a good challenge. Died a bit in those 3 guys mini boss by the watch tower but doing well.

0hMyGandhi558d ago

I snapped my Ninja Gaiden (for the og xbox) disc in half literally 30 minutes in. Then went out a bought a new copy the next day, and then went on to beat it three times.
Good times.

Pyrofire95557d ago

That’s great to hear the dude quests are that good. Have a great time man!!

I cannot even fathom what it’ll be like when the wife and I boot it up for the first time…so anxious!

Jin_Sakai558d ago

Just started and I can already tell it’s going to be a masterpiece. SSM are an incredibly talented team.

Bathyj558d ago

It unlocked for me at 10.30 last night. I thought I'll just have a quick turn.

Well 2 and a half hours went in the blink of an eye and I got 4 hours sleep before work.

Crows90558d ago

What are you waiting for! Get back to work on that game!

Bathyj558d ago

I did. Got home and put about 7 hours in.

Gianoni33558d ago

Amazing game. Played for 2 hours and wow

ClayRules2012558d ago

Amazing and wow (for just 2 hours) I like the sound of that haha. Music to my ears!

Continue enjoying it! I’ll be playing later tonight, BUSY day ahead for me and the family, but we’re all itching to play😄

ClayRules2012558d ago

If I’m not mistaken (and memory serves me right) Naughty Dog thought the same thing with The Last of Us… And we all know how that was a special game back in 2013! So, knowing just 3 months ago they thought it was not good, yet their desire to hit “Perfect” much like their brothers (Naughty Dog) never has them take the easy route, still work so incredibly hard at their craft - being the veterans overall that this team is, along with I assume new fresh talent, this teams love, passion, care, fire and respect for this game and it’s characters etc. and their love for the fans (in wanting to deliver us a great game) really has, no surprise, paid off.

With hard work, the right mindset and loving what you do, respecting the art of games etc. you will get success. Sony’s first party studios continue to show this again and again. Simply unmatched talent.
