50% of PlayStation 3 Owners Use Online Service

Sony shares some of its more interesting facts about the PlayStation Network

When it comes to online console gaming, Microsoft's Xbox Live is the undisputed leader. But not all games are on the Xbox 360, and Xbox Live isn't the only service in town. Sony's PlaySation Network is the foundation of PlayStation 3's online strategy, and unlike Xbox Live, it gives a great deal of control to the developer.

I have no idea how factual these stats are but, apparently 40% of Americans have high speed of some kind. The rest are on Dial Up.

I couldnt get online, because they are all single player.

Thats probably one of the reasons its only at 50%. For online gaming, I stick to my 360, thats where all my friends are.

Well, everyone with a ps3 with it connected is online for free, that's for sure.

I have two friends who haven't even connected their PS3 to the internet yet. There are still a lot of people who think of their console as a single player machine or offline multiplayer.

Also not everyone has a broadband connection, and even less have wifi or an ethernet connection next to their ps3.

Same thing applies for the 360. It is free to get online and use the marketplace and limited chat functions. You just have to pay for multi-player. Still even with the free Silver account option 360 users sit at about 50% online too. Some people (sadly) might not even understand the online capabilities of their console. Worse yet some people still have dial up....More than you think too.

Everyone is talking about UT and Warhawk, but Sony really needs to push their PSN games to have multiplayer. I mean imagine if High Velocity Bowling or PixelJunk Monsters was online with voice chat, that would be sweet. Of course this number hopefully will go up when Home is released.

I don't play online often but I sometimes play Resistance. My PSN code is my user name for people who are interested. I have Unreal but my controller is damaged and the character keeps running off on me so I will wait until dual shock to play it.

good examples. But its the exclusive titles
that will really increase that percentage.

yeah it is interesting but not unexpected. Because it basically proves what everybody knows already, in that xbox 360 has the hardcore crowd and ps3 has a hardcore/ casual crowd. The fact that psn is free just shows that most ps3 owners don't care that much for online no matter how good it is

PSN is great, but I'd still like to see Sony step it up a bit.

1) Redesign the store.
2) Allow devs freedom, but initiate STANDARDS. All games must have voice chat for instance.
3) More PS1 titles!
4) More classics! I love titles like Stardust HD, but I also want titles like TMNT, AvP, the Simpsons Arcade, etc etc. Give us both!

Well alot of PS2 users never even played online until they got a PS3. Whereas the Xbox crowed most likely owned a dreamcast as well, and they followed the lineage of online gameplay.

Sadly i of all people don't have internet at home.. dont have a computer at home as well.. if i want somethin downloaded i take my system to work with me, set it up and take what i want then be done with it, or use my psp.. or usb device of some kind... or whatever, sadly.... i don't play much online, not nearly like i want to (specially sense i have 37 games for the system.), only if i have my system at work and on break.. heh.. altho i have made a deal with my neighbor to allow me to hook up a wireless router so i can have access online without myself paying at all!! hah, i'm just buying the router.. and it benefits them as well..i find my ways tho....no matter how much i know i have been missing lately...

I'm one of the few that prefer to play off line. Online multiplayer is just not that important to me. It's cool to have if I want to play online but I rarely do. I've played the most online with UT3. If I had a 360 I don't think I would ever pay to play online. Maybe when GTP comes out I will.

I have my PS3 connected but online gaming has never been my thing. I just enjoy campaign or story modes in games. I don't mind the odd game of Resistance or Warhawk online but it's not the reason I buy games.

If you have an Xbox 360, your probably using it to play games, morso than to watch a DVD. If you are watching content from the Store than you are using the Live connection as well as for Multiplayer gaming , if you pay the monthly fee.

As for the PS3, like I will continue to say, the user-base will be skewed for a while. What percentage are only using it for Blu-Ray purposes and not games? What percentage do not have Broadband Access? since it is a free service , you would expect everyone to just log in with no fee, as with the 360 you know who is paying, so easier way to measure.

I guess give it time and thing will change but for a "FREE" service I would think at least 90% use it.

My good friend is deaf and he goes online now and then but not all the time. Especially seeing as he is deaf he really cant communicate with the online crowd. He sticks to just dl demos.

I like to play on live (no PSN yet) but I am not hardcore enough to dedicate 2-3 hours a night anymore. UNO is my thing. That and Halo3/COD4

Considering that its not as developed as xbl yet and a lot of other factors that come into place. Most ps3 users dont buy ps3 for online most ppl who focused on online went for 360. Also for the fact that most users dont buy ps3 for online its because they dont have a broadband connection. I keep telling my cousin to get 1 and a lot of his friends have ps3 and also dont have a connection main reason why hes not bothered. Most people I know like playing multi offline co-op games and sports are much funner offline/competitive.

As fun as WarHawk is it reminds me of why I dont like online multiplayer. Most of everyone doesnt communicate and when you try t they form little clicks and talk sh*t to you. Then you do find that handfull of people that want to strategize and they end up quitting because of the jerks that dont. Also what do you get in XBOXLive that you can on the PSN? I was just wondering what you have to pay for?

Which is pretty close to the 10 million Xbox Live users. Only difference is that Xbox Live is supporting both Xbox and Xbox 360 owners (Microsoft doesn't like to reveal specifics). Having a 50% adoption rate makes sense since Broadband Internet still isn't standard.
