Windows 8 will not hurt PC gaming

Windows 8 is not the end of PC gaming, it's the beginning. At least that's what Nate is saying as Microsoft launches its new OS.

y right
win 8 is crap for games

Intentions4222d ago

We'll see when devs actually make games for the OS.

decrypt4222d ago

There is no such thing has making games for the OS.

Sure that would apply if there was a new version of DX that was specific to the OS, however in this case there is no reason why OS's like Vista or Windows 7 cant run whatever that can run on Windows 8.

Hell even if Windows 8 did come with a new DX it would still be irrelevant since DX 11 has hardly been implemented yet (thank the dinosaur consoles, most games today are made around the ancient DX 9).

southernbanana4222d ago

How could Windows 8 be bad for gaming when it works with current and future games? When you install a game meant for the traditional desktop it will open in the traditional environment. I have been using Windows 8 since the developer preview and it is simply the best OS they have ever developed.

Knight_Crawler4222d ago (Edited 4222d ago )

The funny part about this is that the people who are complaining about W8 are mostly the ones who have not tried it and just want to be hipster.

So tell me Prcko, why is W8 bad for games?

SilentNegotiator4222d ago

1) Worse framerates recorded with Crysis 2, Black Ops, etc
2) No Steam on Start page
3) GFWL compatibility issues

Knight_Crawler4222d ago

@Silent

1.Please provide links showing the comparisons and not just some fanboy blog or it did not happen.

2.You will still be able to use Steam - so what is it takes you a couple of secs to get to Steam but how does this affect games?

3.Again please provide link...have you experianced this issues your selfs because I have not heard any uproar about this from the gaming community.

grailly4222d ago

I just happen to hate the interface, but as far as games go, I don't think it'll change much for anybody.

nhales804222d ago

@Silent

2. You can have Steam on the Start Screen. It's is a pinable tile that when click launches it immediately from the desktop.

If you had stopped after the word crap, you would have got more agrees.

Im skipping windows 8, only ditched xp after I got a DX11 card.

Dovahkiin4221d ago

Windows XP was a pleasure to use.

ATi_Elite4221d ago

Unless you have a touch screen monitor then Windows 8 is no big deal!

Stick with Windows 7 which is secure and stable unlike the flaws, bugs, and security breaches you will get with windows 8 until they fix them.

Also you don't make games for a particular OS you make games for the GPU APi i.e. DirectX or OpenGL

Companies like Valve are moving away from DirectX to the Freedom of OpenGL so they don't have to worry about dealing with Microsoft when it decides to screw-up or Rape Developers with fees for DirectX

DirectX 10 sucked which caused a huge lag in high end graphical PC Games but MS got it right with DX11

Hopefully with advanced EFI mobo's and AMD/Nvidia working closely with Devs, one day we can just boot directly to a game and not have to worry about an OS for gaming.

acidbrn4222d ago

At least Microsoft know what people think of Windows and gaming. Maybe they will take that all to heart and really put some much needed effort into it.

Roccetarius4222d ago

Windows 7 is probably going to be another Windows XP. That is, if this is what Microsoft is planning for future OS.

DeadlyFire4222d ago (Edited 4222d ago )

Windows will still be windows. Just gotta click desktop tab of Xbox 3 interface on Windows 8. haha

I do agree with the article. Its not all bad. Creating a side step for Apps isn't the best idea to some, but considering you still have browsers, the desktop, and applications you can install and use normally its not much of a change. Just a Windows Dashboard just like Xbox. I figured eventually they would blend the two. Xbox 3 will be running Windows RT(or ARM edition as I call it.). Not a doubt in my mind that it supports that.

moodgamer4222d ago

Ive tried this windows, its the most unpratical desktop windows that i ever put my hands on. This is great for a tablet, not for a desktop.

southernbanana4222d ago (Edited 4222d ago )

I'm not sure if you have really touched Windows 8. The fact that you say it is unpractical as desktop is absurd. When I am using Windows 8 at work (have been using the retail release for several weeks now) I simply stay in the desk top app. Compatibility is a non-issue. Photoshop and all of my other productivity programs run exactly how they did under Windows 7. After all the desktop app in Windows 8 is nothing more than Windows 7 with a few minor changes. I suggest you give windows 8 a try for more than five minutes. If you have even touched it at all.

moodgamer4222d ago

You have your opinion, i have mine. you disagree with me i disagree with you. Can we be friends? =). Im sorry but its my honest take on this windows 8. I love W7 just the way it is. By the way i touched it, im using it on a all in on desktop, with touchscreen. Thats why i say its very good on a tablet or touch control screen but not with mouse and keyboard. And i feel the need for the start button. I wish all the sucess but this is not for me.

Activision team is opening a new game studio in Poland 'Elsewhere Entertainment' to build new AAA IP

Microsoft's Activision subsidiary announced today that it is opening a new game development studio to take advantage of the huge talent pool growing in Poland. It'll be the second Activision studio based in the region, joining Infinity Ward Krakow, although this studio is, in fact, not working on Call of Duty.

Microsoft's quest for short-term $$$ is doing long-term damage to Windows, Surface, Xbox, and beyond

Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

"The plan to move Xbox games to other platforms is codenamed "Latitude" internally, and I know there's debate and unease at Microsoft about whether or not this is a good idea. More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. "

Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware.

Xeofate2d ago

"Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware."

It's for the best.

Quit stringing along xbox fans and screwing over PlayStation owners.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

Take good care of those Xboxes if you have 'em ...

outsider16242d ago

An Xbox game on a Playstation. Never in my years of gaming did i ever thought this was gonna happen.

jznrpg2d ago

It is dying anyway so doesn’t make much of a difference

VersusDMC2d ago

No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.

Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.

If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.

PSPSA2d ago

I'm not convinced, why then announce that they're actually working on the next-generation Xbox with “the largest technical leap”, and also looking into handhelds now?

Rols2d ago

Not like MS don’t drop things a hot potato if it is not performing. Look at MS history to see products or platforms discontinued. Xbox is not a charity for MS, it needs to make money and the ABK was the last roll of the dice for Xbox.

purple1012d ago

Xbox hardware team members have been incorporated into surface team

This perhaps shows they are not expecting big things from Xbox as a separate entity

Abear211d 22h ago

Seems like they are planning to win next gen. All the acquisitions were this generation and nobody except Xbox fans expect games from the acquisitions any time soon.

I’m sure Microsoft can afford to lose money on the short term, pretty sure they do risk assessment when acquiring many companies and spending billions, they’ll be fine lol.

gold_drake2d ago

i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.

but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.

S2Killinit2d ago

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

PRIMORDUS2d ago

It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃

ChasterMies2d ago

The Xbox brand will live for the games. I don’t expect Microsoft to entirely drop out of gaming hardware. They make Surface tablets and laptops. They’ll make Xbox branded hardware for those that want it.

shadowT2d ago

"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor2d ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff21832d ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.

-Foxtrot2d ago

In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year

“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"

S2Killinit2d ago

Yup. MS are a cancer to console gaming.

Aloymetal2d ago

100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...

PRIMORDUS2d ago

Yup, and it's only going to keep spreading.

Outside_ofthe_Box2d ago

Phil Spencer's words always comes back to bite him lol

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE4d ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware7304d ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor4d ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

Barlos4d ago

Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

Skuletor4d ago

It's exputer, fine is one word I would not associate with them.

Profchaos4d ago

I think it's becoming clear based on matt bootys comments there's no future for any IP that can't sell above 10 million within the launch window. But is also a small game that gives them prestige

/S it's beyond a joke right now
