HD Remakes: Nostalgia Going Too Far?

I don't see how.

They don't just "re-release" them, they have updated visuals, trophies and a discounted price, how is this even remotely a bad thing?

I love the idea. If you don't, go play the original on the ps2 and shut up about it.

I personally like that there are some compilations that are available. Like i have only the first Ratchet for PS2 and the Future games for PS3.

To be able to get the Ratchet collection in one nice offering with upgraded visuals and trophy support all for less than the price i paid for a single copy. It's a great deal.

Or even when MS did the Halo anniversary edition was a nice version to get. It makes playing these older games with a more current look so much more enjoyable.

Now i can see if all of a sudden that is all we started getting. Nothing BUT remakes. That would be an overload of retro entertainment.

Now I will say that when they're done incorrectly and clearly just for a quick buck, i.e. Silent Hill collection, Resident Evil, etc that it's a bad idea.

But Okami looks amazing, The God of War Collection and others are just a straight up treat!

Couldn't agree more.

And it's worth noting that these older games will find their way onto the PSN/XBL/eShop (or whatever Nintendo calls it) regardless of HD upgrades. So they're still trying to sell you back games you already own, just without any of the perks.

Not to mention they aren't even that expensive. It's usually $39.99 for 3-4 games and the ability to relive the games you loved to play before on your new console.

Not only that but it gives some people the first chance to play games they missed. For example, I didn't play God of War, Ratchet and Clank, or Jak and Daxter when I had my PS2 (Monster Hunter, DMC, Final Fantasy, among other jRPG's, took all my time), so my first time playing those games are the collections Sony published.

And I even played the GoW Collection right up until I got GoW3, which was amazing since I was able to experience them all in order, and with little time in between. It made me appreciate the series more.

I honestly wish there were more games being re-introduced this way, rather than just throwing up the old versions for download as PS2 classics.

I think there are a couple of feelings that come to my mind when it concerns HD remakes.
1.Cash grab-Its easy to simply convert these games to HD and implement Trophies/Achievements.

2.Obviously I feel like backwards compatibility took a huge hit this generation, instead of people complaining, they kind of just took it, meaning we might have to buy games we already bought yet again.

3.I think it can be a waste of resources, even though they are easy enough to make, I'd rather have developers work on current gen games.

4.I haven't seen too many remakes that were really good, I enjoyed the God Of War remake and the Halo CEA remake, that was pretty much it. The rest felt and looked like last generation games.

If your into them, good for you, if your just now getting the chance to play these games, good for you. Just from my point of view I'd rather look ahead and not back.

I personally love them. When the MGS release came out I bought it right away and had a blast playing MGS3. I'll keep buying them if something that interests me gets released.

I think HD remakes are a great idea. People who didn't get to play these games on first release have the chance to play them now, remastered. I also like the convenience of not having to dig out my original games, and their consoles, when I want to play those older games again.

Jet Set Radio really benefited from the update but I guess that's not always the case. It's great that Sega are doing so many of these re-releases on the one hand, but it also makes me kinda sad to see them living on past glories.

Well i guess they remake every movie now even if it came out last week it just shows how stale and devoid of fresh ideas the industry is,some devs cant make any money except off past glory.

Is it really any different to, lets say, digitally remastering a Beatles album that was produced several decades ago?
Fans of the Beatles dont suddenly stop being fans and get to enjoy a track or album thats a greatly enhanced product.

It just shows how much better some older games were. If that's a good thing or bad thing I don't know.

But there's no harm in it. Re-mastered games, bonus features, extra-replayability and good value (unless you're Capcom selling them for £14.99 a pop). It opens games up to new audiences and promotes classics that might have been forgotten by some gamers.
