THE DEBATE: “Mobile games need to do more to appeal to ‘proper’ gamers”

Welcome to the Wednesday Debate, where we take issues in the games and tech world so big you can see 'em from space and attempt to set the world to rights by arguing about them right here, on the internet, where everyone can see. This week in the Wednesday Debate, Postdesk writers Jack Bromley and Grant Howitt thrash it out over whether mobile games are good enough for serious gamers to bother playing. Jack is arguing for the statement, and Grant’s arguing against. It may surprise you to discover that neither of them have any formal training in the field of debate.

I upgraded to a Galaxy s2 the other day, and one of the free games I got with it was Dead Space. I was quite gobsmacked with how well it looked and played. It opened my eyes tbh, here was a game that looked and played like a console game.

It was still a bit limited compared to its console counterparts, but for a mobile game it was light years away from what I was used to playing on my previous phone.

It showed me that progress is rapidly increasing in terms of what mobile phone games can achieve.

In a few years who knows what they will be capable of. I'd like to think that console gaming will be around for a long time, but thinking realistically, I don't think it will.

The time of the mobile phone as a true gaming device may be coming much sooner than many may think.

There's certainly experiences like this out there on mobile to be had, but I wonder why mobile games need to appeal to "proper gamers". They're not really the same demographics and the gamers who are playing mobile games certainly don't think there's anything wrong - certainly not when you consider the billions of dollars worldwide that are being spent on mobile games. I think if every mobile game suddenly became more like the games we'd see on consoles or dedicated mobile gaming devices, we'd probably see mobile game sales fall off. Those aren't the type of games mobile players are looking for, otherwise everyone would be rushing out to buy Grand Theft Auto 3 on their iPhones instead of Angry Birds. Basically, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you want to remain relevant you need a mobile powerhouse. MS got Minecraft, maybe King soon, T2 got Zynga, EA got Glu, Tencent got most of the other big ones.

Sony is likely looking for one too or they will be left behind.

Sony already owns the #2 highest grossing mobile game ever in Fate/Grand Order.
That game is close to Genshin Impact levels of monthly revenue.

Well angry birds still makes money so it’s not a dead horse. They just need another hit.

darthv72394d ago

Angry Sonic, Angry Tails, Angry Amy, Angry Knuckles, Angry Chaos....

Lifexline394d ago

Lol yeah you would be surprised at what could sell. I could see it.

porkChop393d ago

Angry Taxi might actually work.

blackblades394d ago (Edited 394d ago )

Looks like something MS would grab. I wont be surprised some how ms gets Sega with this included magically.

We could fund more games like Sonic Mania

We could buy the music rights back to Sonic 3

We could reboot some old franchises like Ristar, Shinobi, Gunstar Heroes or Golden Axe

...Nah. Angry Birds it is

Snookies12394d ago

Wait, have they even made anything since then? Thought they were a one-hit wonder lol.

darthv72394d ago

I didn't know they did a bunch of stuff prior to Angry Birds:

Pretty much everything since has been a spin off. Now maybe Sega will make Angry Chaos or something similar.

FallenAngel1984394d ago

Mojang only made one game and Microsoft still purchased them for $4 billion

Sometimes one property is all you need especially when it’s lucrative

MadLad394d ago

Angry Birds fell out of relevance years ago, but whatever they want to do lol.
