The 10 Worst Final Fantasy Games

The Final Fantasy franchise has taken a lot of slack lately. Some of it is unjustified, most of it is. Top 5 or 10 “best of” lists have been done to death, and glorify the series more than they should. Granted, there are some fantastic, if not ground-breaking, games in the franchise, but the majority of them – especially the ones of late – have been downright pitiful.

Final Fantasy XIV, XIII, and XIII-2

Bobby Kotex4312d ago

After playing VII years ago and remembering how awesome it was, I decided to get XIII when it came out. All I can say is I'll probably never buy another FF game. I just don't understand the obsession JRPGs have with effeminate men.

edgeofsins4312d ago

Watch out for Versus XIII. It looks like it will redeem the FF series. Unfortunately there just isn't much to look up but on some sites you can find a lot of detail about the story and the world and stuff.

blumatt4312d ago

I love FF 8 the best. Awesome love story.

Whitefox7894312d ago

@edgeofsins ohh well you don't mean at all a gameplay trailer of the game that was shown in 2011?

This should be more then enough to convince you to keep your eyes on this title, I trust Nomura after all.

"Squall is the worst protagonist"

I disagree. Squall is actually one of my favorite main characters. He underwent a transformation during the game and had a big influence on it as well, which is what main characters are supposed to do, not follow people around just for the thrill of it like Vaan in FFXII. It didn't matter that Squall was a jacka$$ at first. At least he had a personality and he wasn't boring.

NCAzrael4312d ago

@blitz0623

Perhaps I'm just remembering it incorrectly, but you and I have very different views of Squall. Perhaps it is because of the fact that I played Final Fantasy games before VII, so I always looked past character models and pretty scenery when judging characters. VII didn't have a lot of great characters, to be honest. There were a few, but not as many as I'd have liked given previous games. Sephiroth was not the great villain everyone made him out to be. But I'd honestly take any of the characters from VII above Squall any day. He spends the entire game whining and being kind of a bitch, and pretty much gets dragged through the entire game by the supporting characters. And "Awesome love story," as blumatt put it, is almost as bad as saying Twilight was an awesome love story. He's clueless the entire time until finally at the end he realizes "Oh, hey, she actually likes me!" Never mind the fact that she's been throwing herself at him the entire game.

AsimLeonheart4311d ago

What you western people call "effeminate men" are what women like in the eastern countries. Vaan from FFXII was popular among Japanese girls. The concepts of masculinity and feminine beauty are subjective and depend upon nation and culture. You should not be so self-righteous and arrogant as to believe that only your ideas and concepts are the right one in the world. We in the east do not like the appearance of western male characters as well who seem overgrown, ugly, insensitive and crude to us living in the east. The guys you call "effeminate"over there are considered young and handsome over here. It is all cultural difference and no one is right or wrong.

Final Fantasy X-2>Final Fantasy XIII

Both in terms of gameplay and story telling. Even though the story of FF10-2 wasnt even good

oli4312d ago

I loved the fast turn based battles in X-2.

dylandurden4312d ago

Agree. I hated X-2 back then, but XIII manages to be even worse.

Kratoscar20084312d ago

FFX-2 has one of my favorite battle systems and is has a girl only jobs system that is amazing.

FFXII didnt have neither a good history or good gameplay.

TiberusX874312d ago

XIII-2 > X-2 & XIII

Want to know something also? They're all directed by the same guy, Motomu Toriyama.

FF hasn't died, the 3 lowest ranked games have just all been directed by this guy. There are still other teams and directors involved with the other projects.

"And just in case you were wondering, my top FF games of all time are:
5) Final Fantasy (mostly for nostalgic purposes)
4) Final Fantasy VII
3) Final Fantasy IV
2) Final Fantasy X
1) Final Fantasy VI"

Really? After he named all of the supposed shit ones, there really weren't that many left.

These "Top X of Y" articles need to DIAF.

Plus, The Crystal Bearers not being mentioned automatically discredits the piece.

StraightPath4312d ago

FF8 = Fail article author is not a ff fan rather then a noob.

Relientk774312d ago

Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X are the best of the series IMO

iamtehpwn4312d ago

Really? You're saying X-2 is better than XIII-2? You've obviously never played XIII-2.

entitygm4312d ago

Not to mention the draw system was entirely optional. You could sit there and draw 10,000 spells if you really wanted to, or you could draw the bare minimum. The quickest route was to have your magic draw while the others battled the distribute them out so you weren't drawing 1-2 with a fighter.

The level system in FF8 was excellent about this. If you spent time on the grind to level up, the enemies did so as well. If you felt like speeding through instead, the enemies stayed low level. Enemy difficulty was based on your strength so it was consistent and didn't require grinding at all.

TiberusX874312d ago

A lot of people bash XIII-2 without even playing it, because of the stigma behind XIII.

I struggled to complete XIII, and I got the Platinum trophy for XIII-2. Massive difference, and a great leap up.

That being said, the next core FF won't have anything to do with Motomu Toriyama anyway, so the style will be completely different. Bring on Ito's Team for XV (VI, IX & XII)

Leonesaurus4312d ago

"1) Final Fantasy XIV

The only game on the list I have never played"

This list is void the second the author of this article said that.

But to be honest, if the person did not like FF XI, then chances are he most likely won't have an open enough mind to like the things in FF XIV.

I can't really argue against some of the things this author says about FF XI, since if you don't like the game because of some of the reasons he/she gave, that's taste and opinion. And that's his/her right to dislike that game.

I love FF XI personally, and I also really enjoy and love FF XIV.

You can argue against the launch of FF XIV till the sun goes down but if you haven't played the game you really have no say in whether it is good/bad or #1 on a list or #10 on a list.

Even if you still have the same close-minded opinion on the game after playing it, at least you can say you played it a considerable amount of time to form an intelligent opinion.

FF XIV actually has one of the most interesting worlds and stories I've seen and played in any FF game I've played. Not saying it is the best, because that is up to a persons own opinion.

But I would go as far to argue and say that it is vastly over-criticized to the point where no one actually gets to understand and explore the story and praise some of the interesting things in the game's lore.

As for FF XIII and XIII-2, even though I did find some enjoyment out of them compared to most gamers, I understand 100% why they would be up on a list and vastly disliked.

Then again, I guess I could say the same about FF XIV, but for entirely different reasons and unfortunate circumstances.

Hopefully, FF XIV 2.0 will make people change their minds and perception on the game to some degree.

tommygunzII4311d ago

I agree 100%.

FFXI was a brilliant game. Heres to hoping that FFXIV will be half as great.

TiberusX874312d ago (Edited 4312d ago )

Isn't obvious after all this discussion that the Final Fantasy fanbase is so large that it is completely divided on every single entry?

There are always different directors & teams involved with each entry into the FF series. That means there will always be changes, new ideas and different directions. Hence a split fanbase for every release.

There is not a single Final Fantasy that someone doesn't hate, or rated below one of others. So lets just keep playing, as this will just continue as long as the series is alive.

/ Point Made

Hicken4312d ago

My one bubble is to say that I'm giving YOU a bubble for saying something intelligent.

360ICE4311d ago

I'm not saying don't criticize Final Fantasy, because I think there's always room for some positive criticism, but I will say don't expect so damn much from FF. FFVII, FFIX, FFVI, FFIV or FFX or whatever one is your favorite has never been and will never be the norm of JRPGs, RPGs or even FF games. They're the absolute gold standard. No company is likely to keep giving out 10/10 masterpieces after another, and given how little people expect from JRPGs in general, I'd say it's pretty weird how much pressure people put on FF.

What if FFXII was an independent release, not made by Squarenix? I bet you, it'd be a cult classic and a fan favorite, and people would be looking at Square, and ask why they can't make games like that.

But, yeah, a lot is wrong with FF, so by all means speak out.

Pozzle4313d ago

Dirge of Cerberus for me. Way to turn such a classic and memorable RPG and turns its world and characters into generic, dull, shooter crap.

edgeofsins4312d ago

If you are playing only a person that shoots a gun I don't expect them to have the usual RPG combat.

Pozzle4312d ago

I've got no problem with Square making a shooter sequel to an RPG. But they just...didn't make a good game.

The controls were clunky, the RPG elements and levelling system was silly for a shooter, the locations were dull and grey and looked nothing like they did in FFVII, the non-FFVII characters were one-dimensional stereotypes (e.g. the Russian spy. FFVII's world doesn't even have a Russia!), the story was nonsensical (Lifestream-internet...wtf! Hojo downloading his conscience into the main villain...wtf!), the AI was stupid beyond belief, and most of the time you're just running through linear grey levels to shoot the same two bad guy types (the generic gunmen and the generic snipers) over and over again.

It was a paint-by-numbers shooter, and if it wasn't set in the FFVII world, I doubt it would have recieved as many positive reviews as it did. Square can do so much better than that.

"Final Fantasy VIII"

...

...

Get out, no honestly I mean it I'm sick of people saying FF8 was a bad FF game. FF13 was a bad FF game, FF8 was in my opinion one of the best. Great music, great story, great main character development.

"Squall was hands down the worst protagonist of the series to that point"

Oh so I'm guessing all that great character development thats stretched over the 4 discs makes him the worst protagonist. The way they transform is character from a loney selfish jerk in the beginging to a brave heroic leader at the end is amazing. People, FF8 haters, only judge his character from the person we meet at the beginging of the game not the person the game transform him into by the end of the game, the end of Squalls journey.

"The experimental combat system had potential"

Don't bother mention the junction system, the excuses I hear for that are amazing. In one sentence people say it was too easy, but in the next I hear it was too complicated...I mean what is it then.

"But my real problem with VIII is that the characters were stereotyped into the same roles as they were in VII. It’s almost as if Square was intentionally trying to capitalize on the success of its predecessor by creating a very similar game."

lol...no they wern't. At least Squall had good reasons to why he was the selfish jerk he was in the beginging on the game, Cloud had none and yet he is never called an "emo". The reason why FF8 is so hated is because it wasn't a sequel to FF7, even though fans knew at the time that each FF game tells a differn't story.

The problem with FF8 is that people nitpicked it to death, if it had come before FF7 and was the first FF PS1 game then that would of been hailed as the "greatest" FF game ever.

Irishguy954312d ago (Edited 4312d ago )

I would have agreed with you, but Cloud wasn't Emo at all in FF7. You remember incorrectly. He wasn't particluarly a **** either, only to barret who was a **** to him, and yes he had much greater reason to be a ****ed up person than Squall, Squall was damaged from being left alone/not trusting people etc. Cloud was experimented on with Jenova cells while he was a weak kid....along with being traumatized by Nibelhiem incident

FF8 is great i'm replaying it now btw. Imo the junction system is too easy, the characters are poorly developed and some of the plot devices were pretty retarded./orphanage/. 3rd disk lets it down imo/ Sorta drags too long in that.

FF8 was also my first FF. FF7 is my favorite for a variety of reasons/ FF8 is in my top 10 list too/ It definitely isn't a bad game/ Although if some people think it is then fine, I can see why they would

LightofDarkness4312d ago (Edited 4312d ago )

Wow, it sounds like you haven't even played VII. VIII has one of the worst plotlines in a videogame that I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through. It is beyond ridiculous. Orphanage scene, anyone?

The draw system practically forces grinding, junctions and practically everything about them make the game simultaneously too easy and infuriating, and that damn card game... it confuses me to no end how anyone could consider this game to be one of the best in franchise.

HammadTheBeast4312d ago

So, one scene majes the whole plot go bad? The plotline with Siefer and the characters are pretty awesome, especially Irvine. Sure, the card game is messy, but you dont have to play it, and it gets fun once you know how to play. Trust me.

NeXXXuS4312d ago (Edited 4312d ago )

If you knew anything about FFVIII, you would know that the draw system was not necessary unless you wanted it to be. They had a completely different system for creating magic from items with a GF's ability. There was no need to grind magic if you didn't want to. And the card game was just something extra. You didn't need to play it, they just included it in there for some extra fun. I actually got the Lionheart on Disc 2 because of Triple Triad.

user54670074312d ago

Someone tells me off that I havent played FF7 and yet hasn't got a clue what he's talking about with FF8

LOL

LightofDarkness4312d ago (Edited 4312d ago )

Hammad: that was just one glaringly obvious low-point. How about the myriad plot-holes and the awful character development? I'd have to write an essay on it to really drive home the point, but it would be pointless. You won't be taking off the rose-tinted glasses any time soon.

Nexxus: most people don't realize that until later in the game or even after they've played it, and it STILL requires a lot of unnecessary busy work to play the game. You'll still have to teach your GF the ability, go out and farm items, then sit in the menus a while to refine them. The game also penalizes you for using magic by lowering your stats. That is one of the dumbest things ever to disgrace a FF game.

Thus, much of the battles were just trotting out GFs, with their incredibly lengthy attack cinematics, which made battles seem like a chore rather than a pleasure. I haven't played the game since it was released so I might be sketchy on some details, but even watching videos of it on youtube reminds me of the boredom.

@Mike: I don't see you refuting or countering any of the points I've made. Attack the argument, not the arguer.

NeXXXuS4309d ago (Edited 4309d ago )

I'm sure you were one of the people that didn't read Quistis's tutorials about junctioning magic and letting GF's learn abilities earlier in the game. And even if that were the case, other Final Fantasy games were the same way. Final Fantasy IX had a card game but i don't see you complaining about that one. You also needed to buy equipment to learn abilities. You also have to level grind in most of the games if a boss was too hard to beat. Final Fantasy X made you play blitzball as part of the main story (which i enjoyed). So why are you hating on VIII? Junctioning magic and overpowering my characters was one of the greatest things. Having over 6000 HP on disc one was pretty amazing.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 4309d ago
MacDonagh4312d ago

I don't wish to sound like a numbnut but FF8 wasn't that good. The junction system was convoluted and you HAD to draw magic to get the best stats. Not to mention Triple Triad was utterly abysmal and the plot was complete hogwash.

NeXXXuS4312d ago

You didn't have to draw magic from enemies. The GF's you acquired had abilities to convert items into magic. It's not hard AT ALL.

Lovable4312d ago

I agree. FF 8 was awesome.

WildArmed4312d ago

Final Fantasy 8 was amazing.
The junction system made it stand out and easily one of my fav. FF.

I lol'd at the author when I say that on the list.

Qrphe4312d ago

VIII was my favorite too. I played VII and could have become my favorite if I hadn't played IV years earlier.

VIII is my favorite so far (even above) VII even though VII had the better combat system.

Whitefox7894312d ago

All I'll say about FF8 is, Jumbo Cactuar battle ftw!

specialguest4312d ago

FF8 on that silly list is pure blasphemy! FF8 is on my top 5 list, and it was a breath of fresh air in terms of getting away from the dark and depressing atmosphere/look of FF6 & FF7(not that it was a bad thing). The ending was one of my favorite of the FF series.

jeeves864312d ago

I liked FF8, to an extent. But I didn't like Squall.

I liked him initially, but it didn't take long for him to grow on me as one gigantic douche. He has this great support from friends who like him despite the fact that he's a douche and this gorgeous girl is crushing on him to boot. And he's a massive prick. His animations didn't help with that, either.

Totally understand that he's got a troubled past and is insecure and battles with isolation issues, but by the time all of those were brought to the surface, he was already cemented in my mind as massive prick who only smiles at the end of the game.

Spoilers.

NCAzrael4312d ago

I'm really curious to see what the correlation is between people who loved Final Fantasy VIII, and people who's first exposure to the Final Fantasy franchise was VIII. And to be fair I'd say the same thing about VII.

I've played just about every Final Fantasy game ever made, and VIII would have to be one of the worst ones ever. I hated Squall from the moment I started the game until the moment I mercifully finished. There's no real growth to his character. He starts out being a whiny little punk with no friends at the beginning and goes on to being a whiny little punk with some people following him at the end. That's his character growth. I could tell a better character arc in a 3 page Power Point presentation.

- 1% increase in net sales compared to a year with Forspoken and Octopath Traveller II, which didn't sell more than 3 millions combined (and I'm being generous).

- A 38.3% decrease in operating income despite the release of 'High-Definition' titles namely FFXVI, FF Pixels Remaster, Dragon Quest Monsters, and FFVII Rebirth.

- Aggressive multiplatform strategy one year after saying that exclusivity with PlayStation was mutually desired.

Sure, it's all in my head.

Sonic18812d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Probably for PC and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix games doesn't sell to well on Xbox

Extermin8or3_2d ago

Nothing sells well on Xbox that's precisely Microsoft's problem

The3faces2d ago

Apparently they don't sell well on PlayStation either.

Lightning772d ago

Square named Drops Xbox as part of their multiplatform approach in their quarterly reports.

Like it matters MS will probably find away to close them down to.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can see them going for PS5/Switch/PC for the most part, it'll mostly likely be the Switch 2 by the time their next game enters development, which is probably a good thing since the Switch is struggling with 3rd party games. If they're hurting for money/sales, I don't see them bothering with Xbox, that's just wasted time/money for them.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2d ago
DarXyde2d ago

I mean, maybe? They'll want as much as possible and I figure they could have been hoping for greater impact on PlayStation, but that's good reason to reflect and realize the resources and development cycle of these games aren't very sustainable. The solution is to make more affordable games with shorter dev cycles, then once in a while bring out the big guns.

I think Final Fantasy VII Re make and Rebirth would do really well if it was multiplatform. Specifically, if Nintendo gets their hardware up to snuff, and the rumors are promising. I don't really have much faith in its performance on Xbox, but Nintendo gamers really commit to buying their games. At one point, Breath of the Wild for Switch outsold the Switch itself.

Granted, Zelda always solos everything except GTA, but Nintendo folk are avid Final Fantasy fans. I think it would do exceptionally. Nintendo just needs to make porting easy and inexpensive and they'll get more games.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I don't think the exclusivity hurts them as badly as they think, I think it's a range of factors, like the quality of the games, high sales expectations, ESG/DEI, censorship, development costs/time... I also suspect that Square-Enix is extremely inefficient with their resources, they struggled/avoided towns in the FF13 trilogy, and FF14 was mostly wilderness with little to do apart from derp about in the wild (they also avoid towns and making a lot of characters there too). But FF14 also went through development hell, I think Square-Enix just needs to overall how they do everything, because the way they manage that studio just isn't working.

Christopher2d ago

The two most profitable games for them didn't sell as much as expected. Yes. Make it make sense.

MrCrimson2d ago

I interpret it as - they want to be multiplatform, as they will sell more copies.

EternalTitan2d ago

16 isnt even a JRPG let alone a final fantasy game.
So glad that it bombed.

itsmebryan2d ago

Square finally realized what Sony figured out recently, their installed base is not enough. We are going to see a lot less exclusives from everyone moving forward.

MajorLazer1d 22h ago

PS5 is nearly at 60 million only half-way through its life-cycle, but sure, the install base is not enough.

EternalTitan22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Good exclusives always sell despite install base. Look at Nintendo's recent Zelda.
Its just 16 was awful.

itsmebryan5h ago

@major
It is not enough if it was Sony's operating income wouldn't be down 26% and the company would not have lost $10 billion of value after they missed their sales target .

Christopher5h ago

Looks to me more like they need multiplatform because they've been failing completely everywhere else. Honestly, Square needs to rethink it's non-FF games. They've been failing hard over there in that regard.

Will there be a XBOX for Square to release games on? Or a MS Games service?

thesoftware7302d ago

Hof,

You must not have heard they are launching new hardware and have already committed to a Next-Gen Xbox.

But, for some reason, I think you already knew that and wanted to spin a silly narrative; besides, why wouldn't they release games on the SX/SS? You do know these consoles will still be here, right?

Hofstaderman2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Optics. They have a STATED plan to do so. Thats not commitment. The shareholders and board are calling the shots now. Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already. Investment in hardware, R and D and marketing is how much again? That cost with the history of their hardware performance....at most maybe a handheld. What I am certain of XBOX is finished, the writing has been on the wall before the studio closures. Its MS Games and they are not hardware. They are software because MS is a software company. Expect them to be folded in the Surface team.

What a silly statement, you think this deal was approved so they could make 80 billion in less than a year? This is a long-term commitment, a future-proofing of profit.

"What I am certain of XBOX is finished,"

No, you are not certain of this lol; as you stated, if they make even a Handheld in the form of a Steam-Deck that can dock to a TV/monitor, wouldn't that be just changing the form factor but still XBOX?

Closing these studios has really got you guys delusional; that is what happens in companies, in a changing market: you acquire, and you trim; like it or not, that is the way things are done. Lets look.

Where is the new Psygnosis with a new wipeout?
What happened to Japan Studio? Pixl Opus? London Studio?
Where is Zipper Interactive?

I can list more, but you see, closing devs doesn't mean your company is finished, especially when you have like 30+ dev teams.

Extermin8or3_2d ago

They won't be unveiling the hardware this holiday season it will be like the series x and s they got a tease at the game awards 2018. But no details until year of their release in 2020 lol

Relientk772d ago

Please tell me the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is still coming. I feel like I've been waiting forever for that game.

gold_drake2d ago

i think the juggernauts kingdom hearts (disney provides the money for that one) final fantasy and dragon quest are fine, the rest not as much

Michiel19892d ago

I'm kinda worried about the future of DQ though, Toriyama and the composer both passed away. Huge blow to the franchise.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

@Michiel1989,
Akira Toriyama had an understudy though, he emulates his style, so maybe he'll do the art for Dragon Quest games, I would love to see Nobue Uematsu do music for the series though, that could be fun if they could convince him.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I'll be so p*ssed if that doesn't go ahead, also, where's DQ12 at? They've been silent on that for so long, and it was announced years ago.

@gold_Drake,
I'm pretty sure they can siphon some profit from A Realm Reborn to keep FF and Dragon Quest going too. I think the company would have gone bankrupt if it wasn't for that cash cow.

gold_drake1d 21h ago

14 is definitely brings in the a consistant cashflow

Another sign that dedicated consoles market is in trouble, while PC seems more and more attractive to big publishers.

Having a good gaming PC and a PS5 myself, given current trend form both Sony and MS I am less and less playing on PS5, waiting for exclusives to release on PC, so I understand the logic behind the new strategy.

anast2d ago

Post those numbers. Then your comment might make sense.

thesoftware7302d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Ants,

I get that we don't know exactly without numbers, but come on, man, we can clearly see what's happening.

The console market has not grown much, the highest-selling console in history is still the PS2. You can play the " prove it" game all you want, but Sony's more aggressive PC push, SE completely rebooting their company/business, after being mainly exclusive to one console and showing a sizeable profit loss is telling.

PC is a high seller, and your doubtful PS5 dominant stance does not change the clear writing on the wall, straight from Sony's mouth, that they need to be, and will be more aggressive in the very lucrative PC market.

So, in other words, PC market is indeed looking more and more attractive to Pubs.

anast2d ago

@730

Numbers?

I'm willing to bet the farm that ¨PC gamers are not the dominate number compared to console, but I don't know because I don't have numbers. However, the price point of entry can allow us to infer what I had just stated.

anast2d ago

I don't click on links on forums. Tell me why that .com source is legit.

Tacoboto2d ago

What an ironic thing to say on a link-agreggate site like N4G. Explains your comment history perfectly.

Michiel19892d ago

asks for numbers. receives numbers and then continues to say I don't wanna click a website (because it might shatter my illusion)

anast2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@All the people with that good 'ol folk wisdom

It's ironic how I clearly asked for the site and people still can't even answer this simple question.

Tell me how many people click on random links on forums?

Tell me the site and I will look. I don't mind being wrong and I'm barely intelligent enough to change my mind with something substantial.

All the numbers I have seen is that PC doesn't even come close console gaming in revenue, and nothing touches mobile gaming. More people touching something doesn't mean anything. It just means more people own PC for work and touch Steam every now and again, those numbers mean even less.

Charal1d 22h ago

Anast I wasn’t expecting more from you and I haven’t be disappointed.

Don’t believe any number if you want, but things cannot be more evident that most of games companies are pushing to get the most they can from PC market.

Hell, we have both MS and Sony that are releasing their biggest franchise on PC with no or less and less delay vs console release, that is never seen before in the industry.

What is surprising me is that PC is not cheap in term of hardware cost, a rig close to PS5/XBX perfs may be close to double the price I guess, and close to 4x for a good gaming PC.
Plus, PC gaming does not have physical release anymore.

So a lot of supposed advantages from console market are not there but PC market is successful anyway, it would be very interesting to understand it.
Maybe one big argument is that we are more likely to need a PC at home, were we can work with, browse, and game, than a dedicated gaming machine. That why handled console market have been crushed by smartphones, we could see a repeating pattern here.

Babadook72d ago

From what I can ascertain PC is a smaller market than PS. There are occasionally times when PC looks to be stronger but overall it's still behind.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

PC also has a lot more competition, especially when people can easily buy and play older games from 20 or so years ago on it.

anast1d 17h ago

You probably need to worry about yourself and your own expectations.

You still haven't even complete the simplest task in telling me the name of the website. Let that sink in. I asked for the name of the website so I can look at it and you couldn't even complete that task.

What are they doing over there? Sounds like they canceled something big. I read a rumor a while back about ff9 remake . Here "Final Fantasy IX has gone through a very challenging development, the game is still in progress but may undergo changes drastic enough that we won't hear about it for a couple of years."
This could be one of the reasons if the rumor is true. That was Silknight i don't know how credible he is but it's something and it would make sense.

-Foxtrot15d ago

I hope IX is still on the cards

Just a straight up remake which they expand a little bit nothing over ambitious

If IX dosent happen then VI and VIII will never be thought of.

Kakashi Hatake15d ago

6 and 8 were way more p popular games despite today's cult following of 9.

blackbeld14d ago

I want my FF8 remake! Can't believe they cancelled it.

TiredGamer15d ago

What are they doing? Sales are falling and the costs are out of control. Big releases need to be absolute sales home runs now, and Final Fantasy sales have stagnated.

Now we know why Square didn’t fall over themselves to remake the original FF7 all these years ago. It certainly wasn’t a license to print money, at least not with what the expectations were. Each of these full on remakes drains an enormous amount of company resources for a razor thin profit margin.

TwoPicklesGood15d ago

Breaking the game up into multiple parts was a mistake IMO.

blackblades15d ago

The loses came from cancelling games nothing else.

Tapani14d ago

They lost the magic in the remakes. And the story is incomplete. The original FF7 is still way better. The Remake / Rebirth are just fan service. Like an Anime/Manga with "optional" filler content. FF7 had pretty much zero filler, it was paced extremely well, and still today flows much better than the grindy story and spongey enemy battles in the remakes.

babadivad14d ago

If they released it at once on all platforms, they would have made all of their money back. Could have been on to an FF8 or 9 remake. Ready to cash in again on nostalgia like Capcom. This is their fault for trying to milk the title.

Once I head they were breaking it up into parts, I lost all interest.

I hope people understand usually when a loss is declared it means a game which had been in development got cancelled. For example Sony Santa Monica before GOW-PS4 had cancelled a project which Sony had spent 7 figures on

As far as square is concerned they release a bad game once a year. Forspoken anyone?

For those making comments on remake not selling well, I hope y’all realize that Sony is the only reason this remake is happening. If Sony didn’t fund it the remake wouldn’t be happening. Just like Konami didn’t want to remake SH2 because development costs of 100 plus million

shadowT15d ago

Do not miss Final Fantasy 16. Great game!

raWfodog15d ago

I'm waiting for them to release the complete edition bundle, but it's definitely on my list.

PhillyDonJawn15d ago

Wth is going on with the gaming industry?

mandf15d ago

Corporate investors taking everything

TiredGamer15d ago

Not rocket science. Compare sales numbers, development cycles, and budgets to the previous gens. We are all collectively burning up the industry from the inside out. Expectations are ludicrously high now for every release and sales are dropping for even the most prestigious of series.

We used to be satisfied paying $50-60 for a game that took 1/100th the budget and staff to make. Now gamers feel cheated if they have to pay the same for a game that took 100x the budget. We may be reaching the end of the line for this model of gaming.

wiz719115d ago

@tiredgamer I think your point is one that ppl don’t understand and you hit it on the nose .. some gamers don’t want to take accountability but it’s some of the gamers fault the industry is where it’s at .. we as gamers set the standards for the industry not the shareholders , ppl forget that the shareholders and the industry want and need OUR Money. Both the Xbox and PlayStation are seeing a drop in hardware , the industry is very stagnant right now.

Tacoboto15d ago

Speaking to Square:

Turns out their mismanagement wasn't related to the western studios they dumped to Embracer, but their own fault.

With regards to Xbox - a good way to kill your brand is to pull support on high quality titles and only dump B and C-tier titles to it

With regards to PC - Epic Games Story exclusivity for any duration and piss-poor optimization will hurt you.

With regards to FF Pixel Remasters - y'all messed up by barely releasing them on physical, like wtf that was free money!

And lastly, you don't help a franchise by releasing a mainline title that undermines every title that came before it. FFXVI was a DMC-like with bottom-of-the-barrel side quests and I can't imagine that helping Rebirth at all considering its marketing is directly tied to how big that game is.

Tacoboto15d ago

Sony is getting their best titles and with the most polish, so what about it? Nintendo gets their top properties too, for titles that can run on Switch hardware.

It's the other fanbases that get the second- and third-class treatment from Square. If that's due to agreements with Sony, that's not a Sony issue but a Square one for accepting those terms. Sony is doing its best to look out for Sony.

wesnytsfs14d ago

sales and stupid practices like exclusives.

TiredGamer15d ago

The industry implosion is continuing. Sky high budgets, prolonged development windows, stagnant sales numbers, and falling currency values (inflation) are wreaking havoc on the legacy industry. AAA games will slowly become the rarity.

CS715d ago

Sad. Rebirth was one of my favorite games in a long time. Should have sold more.

CrimsonWing6915d ago

Oh I’m with you. What’s worse is they can say, “Well we tried to make this amazing game and spend all this money on, but not enough people showed an interest. So no more of these since we can’t take a hit like that.”

The industry is going to take a dramatic shift. Mark my words on this.

rpvenom15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I think there is quite a large portion of individuals like myself who held out on buying it on PS5 because I can get it on PC eventually. To be able to mod the game and also have custom graphical settings to my liking

gold_drake15d ago

same

but im not sure if it matters at all. im sure they made sony pay a hefty sum for the 3parter to come on ps5 exclusively. so watever they made in sales, might have come bk in profits for square, but i dont know
and we dont know what "underperformed" even means for square.
