TGS 2006: Six 1080p Games Playable on PS3

According to 1up.com currently there are 6 games that are playable at TGS in 1080p. What considered to as lofty technical claims by critics and many alike are turning into a tangible reality.

Xbox 360 will upscale all games to 1080p. The box (as far as I know) does not ouput native 1080p for games. HD-DVDs, though, will be native 1080p.

And yes, do a perspective check: Maybe 2% consumers own 1080p HDTVs. And in 5 years, that's projected to still be under 10% even optimistically.

1080p basically doesn't matter, no matter what either side wants to think. But hey, it's nice that both consoles have it now. And maybe 360 will even have some native 1080p games.

i think that 4 1080p 360 story didnt make it, was legit i thought.

Who cares? Unless it is an old atari 2600 game, NEITHER system can run a current gen game at 1080p NATIVELY. They can upmix, but the raw horsepower simply is not there. I also wonder about which 1080p 360 games you are talkin about. Upscaled doesn't count, what I wanna see is true, native 1080p 360 games.
I was on 1up and I couldn't find anywhere such an announcement. Is it because 360 isn't capable of it and they took the news down? It seems so, looks like these games were running 15fps LOL

Xbox360 will have 1080p native as well as up scaling 720p & 1080i to 1080p, so basically EVERY game will be 1080p whether up scaled or native. Will PS3 upscale their 720p and 1080i games? Or will it not have the ability to upscale?? I'M JUST CURIOUS!!!

The upscaling patch is just a MS marketing trick. PS3 don't need to upscale to 1080p, cause every TV that's capabale of 1080p will do it. That's why this patch is only a marketing trick, if you have a Tv capable of 1080p, it will do the job, no patch is needed.

Very few TVs today accepts 1080p input and has a native resolution of 1080p. Of theese few TVs, only a handfull actually displays the input as it is supposed to look, the rest first downscales the picture, does its image optimizing, and then upscales it to 1080p again. This is because of the amount of data in a 1080p frame, which makes image optimizing circuits that handles 1080p native very very expensive.

This will ofcourse change in the coming years.

TVs that accept 1080p signals will accept lower resolution signals and upscale them as well. Both because not much content is broadcast in 1080p, and because it is almost a free feature with the circuits already in the TV.

Really expensive topend TVs will have upscaling capabilities that are superior to what both the PS3 and X360 can deliver (unless MS and Sony has spend a disproportionate amount of money on a good upscaling chip like the Faroudja).

All those connections (composite, component, s-video and VGA) have one thing in common: they carry the video signal in an analog format. What about digital connections such DVI or HDMI? Will there be A/V packs with DVI and/or HDMI connections? If not, will you consider offering that in the future?

We’re poised to hit the sweet spot of the HD market at launch and as the market matures, and we will provide an HDMI for our customers when it makes sense. The reality is, you don’t need HDMI for HD gaming.

I understand the choice of 720p over 1080i because of the fast-motion action sequences involved in gaming; a progressive scan picture is better than an interlaced one for this case, but lately we have seen more and more 1080p capable displays, especially DLP-based flat screens (although 1080p doesn’t belong to ATSC’s specifications for HDTV). The question is, will the Xbox 360 be able to offer a 1080p signal? Is the Xbox 360 GPU powerful enough to render games up to that resolution at playable framerates?

Todd Holmdahl: Xbox 360 offers choice for both the game developer and the end consumer. The game developer can create their game in any resolution. The consumer can request any output resolution (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i). The Xbox 360’s advanced video scaler will scale the game’s native resolution to the end consumer’s requested resolution with extremely high quality output. Bottom line, the games will look amazing.

Xbox 360 does not support 1080p at this time. It’s an incremental improvement at an astronomical expense, and we don’t see consumers clamoring for 1080p TVs yet. We will continue evaluate the market and deliver the capability when and if customers want it.

As for the GPU, the Xbox 360 has the most powerful GPU of any gaming console; even better, we made specific design choices to enable game developers to render real-time complex scenes at high resolutions with high-quality anti-aliasing. Without our Embedded DRAM on the GPU and the huge 256Gbyes/second dedicated bus from the GPU core to the EDRAM, it is impossible to render true next-generation scene complexity at high-resolution with anti-aliasing.

The Xbox 360 has three general purpose cores and three VMX vector units (one per core) while the PS3 has one CPU core, one vector unit, and seven SPEs. These differences found in both consoles’ architectures result in the Xbox 360 having more general purpose power than the PS3 while the PlayStation 3 has more floating-point performance (2 TFLOPs against 1 TFLOP of the Xbox 360 to be precise). Isn’t this a major advantage of the PS3 over the Xbox 360?

Todd Holmdahl: No. The PS3’s vaunted teraflop “advantage” is only an advantage on paper, because the PS3’s performance will be limited by its architecture. Real games are about 80% general purpose code and about 20% floating point code. Xbox 360 has three 3.2 GHz general purpose processors to Sony’s one, and it is these main cores, not special purpose SPEs, that are best suited for game code.

The PS3’s design requires high levels of floating point performance, because the PS3 GPU is unable to do automatic load balancing between pixels and vertices, so performance will drop off during vertex processing. The PS3’s design requires that the CPU take up the slack. On Xbox 360, we do not plan for the CPU to do any vertex processing at all, which leaves all of the processor’s power for game simulation code.

Floating point performance is much more relevant on the GPU, where Xbox 360 has more floating point performance than PS3. Not only does the Xbox 360 GPU have greater raw shader power than the PS3 GPU (240 GFLOPS versus estimated 228.8 GFLOPS on PS3), it will also use more of its power. The Xbox 360’s unified shader model will automatically optimize graphics for each game (vertex or pixel shading), without the developer having to write any extra code. Xbox 360 will also have embedded DRAM to avoid bandwidth bottlenecks and to give developers “free” anti-aliasing to eliminate jagged edges in every game.

Both systems have 512 MB of memory, but we gave developers the flexibility to decide how they use it, while Sony’s split memory architecture is more limited in its options. (We actually looked at the split memory architecture and decided not to use it because of those limitations).

Sony’s emphasis on certain areas of the PS3’s performance is a nice way to distract attention from the fact that they seem to have no response to Xbox Live. Only Xbox 360 has the hardware, software and services to enable the complete gaming and entertainment experience.

But every PS fan knowns, we are getting the better sack of worms. We've known it from the ps2 era and now the ps3. Halo will now in its 3rd iteration start to drain on people. Look at the GT serious FF series they got liek 13 in teh series and gt has 5. Time will truly tell the tailorship of a game, if it can go to the 4th iteration(although i thought this was there last). Halo is cool and fun, but its the same thing over and over.

Every GAMER knows that XBL is here for years and it's hard for Sony to even get on the same level, let alone be on first spot in it. Halo 3 is the last one in the series, but will still be great. Gears of War is the new leader on the xbox platform. Watch and see how it will crush anything on the PS. Gears will take the 360 to the nr. one spot, this Christmas and long after.

Are you stupid? I normally dont like to go there with people on this forum but I feel this needs to be said: you are either straght up retarded or highyly misinformed. MS is releasing a firmware patch update which will allow games to be developed for native 1080p. It will also allow games that are in 720p and 1080i to be upscaled to 1080p. And thanks for the info joe. I believe I read somewhere else in this thread that the other two games of the four are lost planet and DOA so in total its:

Microsoft said they would output native 1080p and I believe them, they never lied to me before.

The four games that are supposed to be in 1080p, its really up to the developers to make that decision, but I know microsoft is throwing them alot of money to do it.

And for the 3 discs, when was that ever a problem? For two weeks, you play the first disc, then the next two weeks you play the 2nd disc, and then after a month you finally get to the 3rd disc. You arent swapping out discs every 10 minutes. Remember PS1?? Multiple discs werent a problem.
