Sony Boss Says PS3 "Momentum" On Par With PS2

The main man at Sony, Sir Howard Stringer, finds the current state of the PlayStation 3 simply peachy. In fact, Stringer thinks the Blu-ray ready PS3 could match the PlayStation 2 in terms of success, according to an e-mail interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

I wish I could have some of the drugs that sony execs smoke...

ps2 had sold 10 million the first year, and had stock shortages all over.

The ps3 well....not so much.

Danja6012d ago (Edited 6012d ago )

Do you think if the PS3 launchd had at $399 it wouldn't have experienced shortages for months non stop ala the Wii.?..it sold freaking well for beign priced at $599 ..the 360 wouldn't have even survived a year beign priced like that..

I think the PS3 will follow in the PS2 footsteps..but honestly I don't see them selling 130mill PS3's as they are doing with the PS2(hence it's still selling quite well)

But every previous PS owner knows that the 1st year is always a slow start and once Sony gets the ball rollin it's game on..and that's what happening wth the PS3 right now..

Go buy Uncharted truly amazing game that every PS3 owner need to experience..!!

no I don't think it would have had shortages like the wii. lack of titles, and an undecided format war were also big factors in holding the ps3 back from ps2's success. the would have done a bit better with a lower price, but not by much.

*edit: and could someone please wake up and take mark1's contributor status away?

GIJeff6012d ago

Dude, were you under a rock when the ps2 launched? what games did it have? coolboarders2001? The system was hard to dev for, lack of titles(compared to the dreamcast), the ports were bad(dreamcast had no "jaggies" remember?), the deamcast had better online functionality, the media hated it, all the dreamcast fans said it was the death of sony for sure... seriously...it didnt have much out of the gate. But its a snowball, just kept rolling...and now look at it. The ps3 is looking to do the same exact thing. People like the diversity that the playstation brand has on its machines. Wait for the price to hit the sweet spot(around 250.00US) and it will start flying off shelves. and yea, i know the ps2 started selling really well when it went 199.00 but lets face it, 250.00 is the new sweet spot.

Skerj6012d ago (Edited 6012d ago )

Thank you GIJeff, because I was one of the ones who said the SAME thing. When the PS2 came out we played it out everyday to see if it could outdo the Dreamcast, for the first year it didn't even come close. The DC trounced it with its library of good games, which was the last time I bought more than 1-2 launch titles for a system. The online play was awesome, we used to play Quake 3 cross platform all the time on DC/PC and PSO was like space Diablo crack. Everyone I knew had one and we are a bunch of fighting game fanatics so MVC/2, KOF99/2K, Powerstone/2, SFA3, SF3:NG/2I (W Impact on DC), 3rd strike, VF3, Project Justice (Rival Schools 3), and JoJo's Bizzarre adventure all got MAJOR play in our area.

I was VERY excited for the PS2 only after seeing the ZoE and MGS2 trailers at E3 that year. Then that launch and the subsequent games had me like "wtf? these aren't good". So I was pretty sure the DC would outlast it, my how quickly that changed. The PS2 picked up the pace like a bullet train and the DC was cast off like a leper. I didn't think it would happen but it did. Anyone who says the PS3 isn't performing like the PS2 did apparently doesn't remember history because the PS2 sucked at first, and now I have 70-100 PS2 games that speak of its growth.

I'm just happy that Sony is learning from the dumb things they said prior to launch and are fixing the issues they've been lambasted for throughout this year. Live's success forced them to take online play way more seriously than they did last gen and that's what I was hoping for. If they keep on they'll have no problem matching the PS2's success.

the ps3 really does have the potential to have atleast some of the sucess the ps2 did.

even with all the bashing and high prices and no games the ps3 sells the same amount of consoles the 360 did in it's first year.

so maybe with all those incredible titles and at an affordable price the ps3 might sell alot more.

Bnet3436012d ago

that brand name had something to do with it? Here look you even said it:

"all the bashing and high prices and no games"

So I ask you this, if what you just said above it true, why in the hell would you buy a PS3 in the first place? Oh wait I know ... it's playstation DUH!

Peekay6012d ago

no not really - its cos of this - an impressive stable of worldwide development support, and Sony's willingness to get behind unique ideas (Amplitude, Shadow of the Colossus, etc.) and support them alongside their more trusted, traditional products.

Bnet3436012d ago

I was talking about why PS3 sold decent in it's first year. And for the record Xbox 360 sold 10.4 million in it's first year and PS3 only sold around 6 million.

eagle216012d ago

These disagrees need a history lesson. Over 8,500 titles on ps2, half of those asian: hint hint. DVD playback (was the new hot format): hint hint. Rockstar and Square juggernaut exclusives (and I mean jugger): hint hint. Consistent first party (not just the fall months: hint hint. Global brand: hint hint. Hardcore and casual balance: hint hint. Who else?

Peekay6012d ago

I’m not sure where you get your info from but the Ps3 has only been out in Pal territories for just over six months. The Ps3 was reported to have sold $6 million two months ago. There’s a huge chance that the ps3 will sell more than $10.4 million units before November (Japan & NA) and March next year for Pal territories (combined). Unfortunately we won’t know much until Sony’s fiscal report is out in March next year. Oh and just for the record the 360’s growth has been stagnant worldwide ever since the Wii and Ps3 were released.

GIJeff6012d ago

see! at least someone sees it.

salgoods6012d ago

where are you getting your first year 360 sales from? cuz i have them at about 7 mil first year and 2nd year so far about the same. so either they have been selling consistently since launch or they had a really good first year and a terrible second year.

I Miss When Games Came In Full Package Rather Than Broken Mess Filled With Microtransactions

The gaming industry has drifted away from offering full-fledged games to putting unfinished titles that are jam-packed with microtransactions on the market.

It's not the fault of the gaming industry. Gamers were told what was happening, were warned about where this would lead, did nothing, and now are acting like it's the fault of publishers that they kept buying these games and investing in MTX. If only those gamers at that time felt as strongly about these things as they do Helldivers 2.

Hugodastrevas22h ago

I don't think MTX target the common gamer but instead predate on the so called "whales". It's gambling pure and simple.

Christopher20h ago

Oh, so it's okay to buy MTX-laden games as long as you don't spend money on MTX, which has led to even more MTX-laden games with even more predatory practices where content that used to be unlocked is now behind paywalls?

C'mon now people. You gave the corporations and inch, and they kept taking and taking. Community members told people that investing in these things alone would only lead to more and more MTX and putting more and more behind paywalls. But it's only the fault of the corporations, not the people who kept supporting it with purchases as more and more was taken away?

Hugodastrevas20h ago

@Christopher that's a straw man, I didn't say any of that I just added context.

-Foxtrot17h ago

Well exactly

People stand up for something which seems small to them and they get called whiners or negative. Then years later the shit hits the fan and they all go “why is this happening?” Like they are innocent.

The issue aswell is younger gamers who grew up with all this thinking it’s normal and we all just look like old farts yelling at clouds when we’re trying to help us all, even them.

Hugodastrevas22h ago

This is what amazed me the most when playing hours upon hours of stellar Blade version 1.00.00 no bugs, no crashes, no sudden drops in frames, no screen tear, no falling from the world, just a complete package on a game under 50GB.
I think Korea will play a major role in gaming in the long run , because they're releasing banger after banger.

isarai22h ago

Still pretty common to find if you stay away from the AAA publishers, in the last 10yrs ive probably only bought like 3 games combined from EA/ACTIVISION/UBISOFT. Even now i still buy games that work right out the box perfectly fine. Just recently got like 6hrs into Alone in the Dark, and not a single sign of any of that bs, really enjoying my time with it.

shinoff218314h ago

There's such a misconception about every game needing a patch, this and that when in reality it's not even close. You nailed it isarai

z2g1h ago(Edited 56m ago)

And we as gamers have to accept our role in that. Constantly never being satisfied. Constantly demanding more while paying less. Constantly demanding better frame rates, better graphics, more modes and faster faster faster…. Then review bombing the product when a demand isn’t met. Meanwhile those same demands are making games more difficult, complex and more expensive to create than ever before, on shrinking timelines that burn out employees and make their lives miserable.

You wanna know why so many games get delayed? Cuz the original release dates weren’t realistic to begin with, but you can’t tell a gamer their game is further away than they want to hear. Some dev or game designer will be threatened physically. That builds even more pressure and rushing. We are officially squeezing water out of rocks and still complaining about that how hard you have to squeeze the rock be just waiting for rain. Most of the time we take it out on the developing studio, when it’s the publisher making the calls.

All you need to do is read the comments on most websites and social media to see how toxic, entitled and petty the gaming community at large is, and realize how that transforms into impossible expectations on the parts of game makers.

Kinza550121h ago(Edited 1h ago)

This is one battle that gamers have never won, hahaha. They were parading recently for their "win" against Sony. Where's the energy for this one, guys? LMAO!

Let's Be Real, There Is Nothing "Micro" About Microtransactions Anymore

Microtransactions have gotten ridiculously overpriced in recent years, with titles now offering cosmetic skins worth more than some games.

Terry_B1d 18h ago

Yup..this is 100% the sad truth

z2g21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

The elephant in the room tho is personal accountability. It’s easy (albeit basic) to blame the big, bad corpo, but microtransactions wouldn’t be where they are if gamers didn’t spend money on them. As it stands the MTs usually make more than the game. Publishers know raising game prices will cause backlash, so they do MTs to compensate. But the adult conversation is consumers determine the success of products with their wallets. So if MTs are a huge thing, it’s because we as consumers told them we like them by giving them a lot of money for them. So if you don’t want them to be a thing, convince your fellow gamers to stop buying them and expect that games will be decently more expensive. You all can disagree all you want, but reality is a bitch, and eventually you have to live in it.

anast19h ago

Trying to convince people is the least realistic thing. If we are trying to be adults, actual action is what changes things not "convincing campaigns" on platforms owned by the people 'you' are going against. It's madness and idealistic.

ApocalypseShadow14h ago

Easier said than done. I've told gamers for years to not buy micro transactions, expensive dlc, etc. Gamers bought it anyway. Didn't fit on a DVD that would have fit on a Blu-ray disc.

I also told some gamers to not pay for online like Xbox Live because it would force the rest of the industry to only offer playing online if you pay for it. Told them not to support a broken console that Red Ringed. To not support Xbox One because Microsoft tried to take away game ownership and how you play your games. To not pay for a console by one manufacturer where a, now 3 trillion worth, didn't make enough games at the level of Nintendo or Sony who are worth less money.

How much of that did you support anyway with your money then go back and read your comment again.

notachance8h ago

yeah that was like telling people not to do drugs or alcohol, these game companies invested a lot of money in researching about how to make people buy MTs, from creating mechanics like loot boxes, purposely make the game grindy, all the way to menu designs and what color and sound effects played when gamers bought MTs.

It was specifically engineered to take advantage of vulnerable and prone to addiction people.

bradfh6h ago

@z2g
People always struggle with issues like drinking, drugs, and gambling. But in games, especially those played by kids, microtransactions are another way companies take advantage of them. It's a problem that needs addressing.

I recommend everyone read this article.

My suggestion is to name these transactions, what they ARE: Hidden-fees.

isarai1d 10h ago

I mean except for the amount of content you're paying for.

Hugodastrevas23h ago

There never was, the only time I paid for a microtransaction was on Blacklight Retribution (PS4) and it was because I enjoyed the game a lot so I felt the devs should get something for all that entertainment (€5 "membership")

-Foxtrot22h ago

The devs wouldn’t get that though, that shit goes straight to the higher ups who do f*** all let’s be honest.

Hugodastrevas21h ago

Probably, but I wasn't as cynical back then and €5 wasn't a big ask to get the guns with grinding instead of renting them, and the game was good (still is on the PS5/4)

CrimsonWing6921h ago(Edited 21h ago)

I couldn’t believe what Blizzard charged for horse armor and cosmetics in Diablo 4…

I remember back in the day when a season pass was $15 and you got everything included in it. Now, I see them at $60 and you still don’t get everything.

CantThinkOfAUsername14h ago

That's just Blizzard. Unlike Bethesda's $0.99 horse armour, Blizzard's first microtransaction, Sparkle Pony, cost $15.

Phoenix765h ago

Bethesda out did themselves a few years back with 76. They released a Xmas bundle for half price on day of release! So, was meant to sell for only $12 from day 1, but tried to convince everyone it was half price, by marking it at $24!

Shane Kim21h ago

As soon as gaming wasn't deemed nerdy anymore, and reached the casuals this happened. We're smart, but casuals play mobile games and other stuff, and don't really have anything to compare. They think gaming is supposed to be like this and pay for in game purchases.
