UK sales of PS3 and 360 neck-and-neck in 2007

Hardware statistics from ChartTrack show PS3 and Xbox 360 are within a hair's breadth of one another in terms of total calender year sales to date.

Xbox 360 enjoyed a 12-week headstart on PS3 before it was launched on March 23rd, but both systems have near identical sales figures for the first 38 weeks of the year.

However, 55 per cent of all PS3 sales came in the first four weeks after the console's launch date.

Xbox 360 is still benefiting from its price drop and the introduction of the Elite model last month, when it enjoyed a 260 per cent jump in sales. Since then (week 34), it has consistently sold more units than PS3 week-on-week.

Ya remember 1up podcast? They said X360 is only doing well in UK. Though I don't think X360 is dead in EU, I think PS3 is doing better.

There wasn't too long ago that I moved to the US so I still keep in touch with many of my friends from Norway. Although most of them don't own any of the two consoles I do know that a good percentage (50-60%?) of them are gonna get the PS3 in the future with the rest undecided. So yeah just want to give you my personal perspective.

And following some of the Norwegian media (vg.no, itavisen.no) I saw no article covering the Norwegian Halo 3 launch unlike when WoW:TBC launched which had people all lined up and stuff.

Europe is predominantly Sony land. Ironically, Microsoft's strongest European country in terms of 360 hardware/software sales has been the United Kingdom - but if these are somewhat comparable to the PlayStation 3, priced atleast £125 more than the Elite, then it puts a shroud of uncertainty into exactly the success rate Microsoft is having outside of North America.

Peter Moore once said that Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are all aware of each others hardware productions and SKU initiatives before the public does as they're in the hardware industry and news spreads fast there. Perhaps Microsoft dropped the price for the 360 in the UK to take full advantage of Halo 3's pulling power in preparation for a cheaper PS3 SKU to hit Europe soon, thus giving them a boost of sales.

How long this boost lasts when Sony introduces the price drop is unknown but I will confidently state that if Sony releases a £299 PS3 in the UK, it will outsell the Xbox 360 week by week consistently such is the brand strength of 'PlayStation'.

To be expected. I have said it all along, MS will come in third place this time around due to their inability to penetrate both the Japanese and European markets enough to make a difference. North America is not the only region on earth and they have no viable way to get in good with the other two heavy hitters. It's simple math folks. With only one of three regions secured, you can bet that MS will fall behind in late 2008 early 2009 and become a distant 3rd by year end 2009. If anybody wants, they can quote me on that.

..why I dont consider this good news for the Xbox 360 is that, before the price drop, its weekly sales figures were almost identical to the PS3 figures. Since then Microsoft has dropped the price by £50 and naturally this will boost its sales to over go Sony.

But consider this..

If a £200-£280 console is selling similar to a £425 console, and then it drops in price and starts to sell more, would you really bet it will start outselling the PS3 by a significant amount?

Clearly price is not as big an issue in regards to the performance of the two consoles in the UK as it is globally. The Xbox 360 should be selling a heck lot more with its original price and although its cheaper now, I have to sincerely question by how much exactly is it selling by. If we follow this pattern, your justified in assuming that its not much of a margin

I sold my Xbox 360 yesterday because it's been nothing short of a nightmare, 2 RRoD problems, 3 controllers stopped working, 1 headset stopped working and 3 game discs mysteriously "cracked" while in use. It'd been nothing but a pain in my side and costed me alot of money (more than a PS3 in fact). The games were becoming boring and unoriginal and dumb (see Halo 3)

After enjoying the PS2 for years with it's great Japanese titles with fantastic gameplay I decided I'd trade in the 360 for a PS3, I good a really good deal and I'm amazed at how stylish and modern the console feels/looks. The dashboard is so much better than the 360's lag-o-dashboard complete with crashes and freezes, I'm completely happy with my purchase and I think it's a brilliant investment for the future when the 360 pumps out it's 99th squad based/military FPS

MS is throwing all of their heavy hitters way too early. What is next Mass Effect trilogy, but thats all. 08 Sony has covered already and this fall, a lot of great titles are coming out, R&C Haze Unreal3. The gaming community over at Euro land know what insane must have titles are coming out for PS3. That is why they are neck and neck. They all just realized that after Halo3 there is nothing but Mass Effect. The Halo sickness will not last that long when Huge games like Unreal and MGS4 start being previewed. And when/if PS3 gets a price cut or the 40Gig console just in time for Unreal and the rest that I have mentioned, Expect 360 sales to lower and PS3 to rise. Also, dont you people think that PS3 is doing fairly well? The Elite system and the price cut is still not destroying PS3. As I said if a cut in price, its 100% likely to start jumping.

so to summarise for users not want to read the article:

1 - 360 holds a year sales lead over PS3 and is getting bigger since the price drop.

3 - 360 sales haven't been great this year but are picking up after the price drop.

The article is bogus on several fronts. First it offers no numbers of consoles sold for either the PS3 or the 360.

Second, it is misleading when the article states that the 360 has been out for 2 years. I bought my Launch console on 11/22/05. Is it November 22nd today? No? Then it's not been 2 years and the article is showing bias against the 360 with misinformation.

I know many visitors to N4G pick and choose to believe or disbelieve VGChartz as long as the information supports or refutes their closely held beliefs, but for the record, VGChartz' accuracy is getting closer and closer to the mark each month with only a few glaring exceptions.

Its European charts show the 360 handily outpacing the flagging PS3. And yes, it is the price but even more so it's the games.

@below: VGChartz does a monthly self-appraisal pitting its predictions against real NPD numbers. They do this for their own credibility and to help refine their algorithms.

You are very right, we are not offered any figures so I decided to do some research. The source of this claim is from ChartTrack, the UK company that monitors the retail sale of music, videos, and software throughout the UK and Ireland, which is the main source of figures for credible and reputable sites such as NextGenBiz and other websites that monitor the industry.

ChartTrack, therefore is credible, often giving hardware and software figures to these sites. They are even recognised by the BBC as the leading analysts of sales in the UK, and they covered the Sony PS3 launch.

The interesting thing is, the person who makes this claim, is Dorian Bloch, the director of ChartTrack. I also tried to get some figures from their website but you need to subscribe and you get a weekly update. Although we have no evidence at hand, the source is credible and I suppose its up to people to decide who they want to believe, this or VGChartz.

I've heard that VGChartz comes close to predicting North American numbers but they're infamous for getting it wrong in other territories. That's just what I heard, I have no opinion on them.

I track the PS3 and 360 sales in all 3 major terretories. The 360 is looking pretty damn dead in Japan. But on a weekly/monthly basis it is beating the SP3 in EU. Especially UK and France. Everyone has to remember the 360 does have a head start of over a year in EU. But on a week to week basis they are slowly increasing the gap in sales between them and the PS3. In the US its pretty obvious that the 360 is regulary beating the PS3. I really think Xbox Live is that big of a deal, not to mention larger games library, and cheaper price. Will this be enough to overcome the Sony "Brand" name? Only time will tell...

What the numbers tell us is that basically Microsoft sold about the same number of consoles from January to March as Sony did in it's launch window. Since that period of time, they have more or less run fairly close with the 360 recently outselling the PS3 due to a price cut. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oh, and Halo 3 is FAR from a mediocre game. For my two-cents, Halo 3 is the most enjoyable, totally complete, fun game I've ever played. And my gaming experience goes back to Pong and Asteroids days.

I honestly can't believe just how much replay value there is in the single-player campaign. Add in Halo's awesome multiplayer and I have a game I'll be playing for years. Can you honestly say that about ANY game released so far on the PS3?

Don't get upset. I know great games are coming for the PS3 as well as more for the 360.
