Sales of consoles in France: Nintendo dominates, Microsoft pains

"The Echoes" published in their last number the charts French hardware over the first quarter 2007.

These numbers are the hardware sales from January until March this year. The PS3 launched in March, but the other consoles were being sold throughout this period.

I'm not impressed by these numbers. I guess they don't play that much games in France... these numbers wouldn't make a dent in the overral... we are talking about PS3 27K per month, XBox 360 14K per month... hardly anything to make a party over it.

@Raist - Explain to me what "Sales hardware in France (1st quarter 2007)" and how many months there is in a quarter? Now divide the number of sales for the PS3 during the quater by number of months in a quater.

Then again, I totally forgot that Sony failed to release the console as promised last year. So, I think they are only counting 1 month.
I think sales are great. But hardly will help Sony get to the 100,000,000 mark as they say they are. Still, globably the 360 is selling more, which means they are NOT catching up.

It's pretty clear.. for a console to become dominating for its current generation it needs to be successful worldwide really, just the US is not enough. Majority of publishers now-adays are European studios, and RPGs remains very Japanese-oriented studio.

They have time to turn the tide, but I think that "golden" opportunity was before the launch of Nintendo and PS3 to market themselves to the Japanese as a "Japanese console" by including RPGs on their line-ups earlier on. The golden hour has pass, maybe next generation; definately not this one.

Power of Green - PS3 will own Europe, Japan, and other countries besides America. It may take that over too though...when MGS4 comes out. I love your precious 360 as much as you do...(well, not to that extent)...but it needed an upgrade. Making the graphics prettier isn't a HUGE jump. Blu-ray, standard hard-drive, hdmi, wifi, and HOME are next generation...the 360's just an xbox with a better controller.

Bad ports to the PS3 are what's making everyone think it has inferior graphics...and no Halo so far has worried early adopters of the 360. Remember back in February? Microsoft made a press release that they were slowing down production of the 360 (Which added fuel to the fire of the 'Elite' Rumours). Now the Elite's out and the plan they originally stated has finished how they wanted it to (Profit margins, news from last week) they can restart shipping 360's worldwide again, not to mention the Elite Launch, which'll boom in numbers (look at the Amazon.com stock which sold out in a couple of hours).

Sony's second week in the UK = 27k units. Sony couldn't even finish of their Launch stock in the first week, it's a kick in the nuts they couldn't do it in the second.

that's because sony shipped out a LOT of units, unlike microsoft and nintendo who can't produce enough of their consoles. Selling out super fast isn't necessarily a good thing : Nintendo could've sold so many more wii's but they just fail to produce enough.

the ps3 has been out for 6 months total(3weeks in france)
the 360 has been out for 18 months.
these numbers tell you no matter what games are on the 360 right now there not buying it and it`s well past the launch window(which ps3 is still in).
for how expensive the ps3 is, how many games aren`t out and how much "bad hype" is surrounding it`s done pretty well.
Especially in anywhere that`s not MS land(America).
Maybe it`s because the MS can`t sell the "image" over there, w/ place`s like GAMESPOT here it`s pretty easy.

not everyone has problems with their 360, and being that it has some great games, and you can get it replaced for free if it breaks, its not as bad as you make it.

If anything, I've had more problems with the PS2, though i like it.

While what you say is no doubt true the hardware failure rate is still quite high for the 360.

My question is why doesn't M$ see this as a problem and improve upon the design of the 360?

I mean, dear gawd, I seriously would love nothing more than to buy a 360 so i can have all 3 "next gen" platforms. But the truth of the matter is with the 360's hardware quality being what it is I won't buy one and I'm sure there are others out there with the same issue.

what you say does make sense, however, the way people make it seem it to be is like if you buy a 360 IT WILL brake. I haven't had one problem
with it. Neither have i heard anything from my friends saying they have problems with a 360.

So whenever i don't hear anything around me, i try not to just go by word of mouth of people i don't know. Now granted Ign did an article about it, and yes there is a problem.

Now maybe these ones that brake are from a specific factory(s), because around here, i hear nothing about 360s braking.

Now don't get me wrong, Msoft should be all over this, they kinda helped with the warranty. Believe me, i want my 360 to work perfectly, and so far it has.

Now as for what Msoft is thinking about not redisigning the 360 i can honestly say i dunno. I guess they found the free warranty good enough.

But as i see it, the PS3 hasn't even been out long, do you think in a while(the launch consoles), we will start seeing disk reading errors, blu-ray drives braking etc?

I just think its kinda useless to just judge a console on if it brakes while that is important, there are many other factors. Heck, my PS2, and some of my friends PS2s had a load of problems. But i didn't just drop the PS2.

So far the 360 has a great lineup of games, so its worth my money, and if my does brake(though i wonder if it even will since it hasn't already)i can get it replaced for free. So really me going without a 360 for a week is ok with me.

The same thing with the PS3. Now since i am waiting, i am less likely to have problems.

Do i think Msoft should be over this more, yes. Maybe it just doesn't bother me as much since i haven't had any problems with my 360. But all i say is, Sony's second time around, they had many issues, Msofts second time they had issues. Notice a trend here?(early start, bugs, etc). And look how well the PS2 turned out game wise.

And games is what it is all about. Though there can still be perks.

While it could be a region thing I have a friend with a 360. So far he's had to reformat the drive because of corrupted data and he's had it overheat once. Granted this particular friend has had no luck with his M$ consoles. His original Xbox came with one of the bad dvd drives and he couldn't read DVDs (among other problems) after a very short time, while my original 1.6 Xbox is still kicking (with a 200 gig HDD).

I've also never had problems with my PS2 other than having to clean the laser with some alcohol and a QTip. But you're absolutely right, region could be the key. I'll wait a bit longer to see if M$ makes some kind of revision on the elite, either that or I'll wait for all my friends to get the 360 first then I'll have to get one so we can do the Halo 3 LAN party. Which is also why I bought the original Xbox (Halo 2 LAN party).

I think alot of people fail to realize why Nintendo's Wii has been outselling the other 2 consols. I personally beleive that the price has alot to do with it. I honestly think that if either the 360 or the ps3 was at a $250 price point that they would sell just as many or probably more than the Wii. Sony's price is really hurting their sales even though it is a great price for the features it offers. Most people cant afford or wont shell out $600 on a gaming console especially considering most people dont even have an HDTV to take advantage of the bluray player. And MS is in the middle with the premium and elite still being fairly an expensive option when compared to getting the Wii. When the 360 and PS3 drop in price to a more affordable option for the average Joe, thats when the sales will take off because they will both have a healthy catalog of games available.

Second that. I have many friends that bought a 360, we have 360 lan parties once in a while and no one bought a PS3. Really NO ONE.

I know a sales person of a large commercial toyshop, they favour Sony, but they say they can't recommend a PS3 for 600 Euro to parents or a grown up that want's it themselve, 600 Euro without HD cables, without any game, without a HEADSET and without many games to play.

WHat's that about Sony, online as a focus and no headset to talk to other online gamers included?

Really, that guy is pissed of. Then I know a gamereviewer who get's all his stuff for free. PS3, 360, Wii, all of the games. He just plain said: well I got the PS3 for free, but it's standing there doing nothing. Resistance is fun, 40 people online, but in the end, do I notice the difference between 16, 24 people or 40? NO

The 360 has more and better games, the online is premium, the PS3 fails on every part. The Wii he plays just in between.

And I think that is the solid truth. Fanboys bought the PS3 @ launch and we see it falling EVERYWHERE after that. Anyone who denies that has mental problems.
