New Xbox Console in 2010: We Tell You the Truth

1UP reported on Monday that Microsoft plans to release a new Xbox console as early as next year, featuring beefed-up Xbox 360 hardware and built-in Project Natal technology.

1UP speculates on the idea that Microsoft could try a similar move such as the one done by Nintendo, which basically built the Wii around the GameCube hardware, with the motion-sensing "Wiimote" being the real addition.

Over recent years, TeamXbox has received information on Microsoft's future plans for the Xbox platform, and that's why, among other topics, they extensively covered 3DV Systems' Z-Cam. Avid TeamXbox.com readers know they were the first publication to report that Microsoft signed IBM to create the CPU for the Xbox 360 (at a time when no one would believe Microsoft and IBM would work together or that the Xbox platform would use a non-x86 CPU) and that Microsoft was doing research on video-based motion sensing.

Today, they can tell you that they have obtained the first details on the next Xbox and that's why they can confirm that the rumor reported by 1UP is false.

That article didn't tell us anything...

Jaces5431d ago

Well fiddlesticks....when the hell can I buy one when I'm getting rumors about a NEW 360 just around the corner?!

chaosatom5431d ago

Lets just hope that MS doesn't do that.

Chuk_Chuk5431d ago

so is it a new xbox or an upgrade of the 360

Syronicus5431d ago

I was hoping for a longer life for the 360 with full support rather than dual console support that in some cases renders newer games less impressive. I hope that the new 360 is better in terms of hardware but it just seems so soon to even start with these news stories, especially with the economy as it is. I know it is important for MS to release their console first to gain market share but this is just a tad too soon if you ask me.

Naucious5431d ago

a lil too soon if you ask me, but who am i to say anything there in the business for a reason. It makes me untrustworthy to buy any MS hardware if i know they are just going to release new hardware faster than they can sell them.

Then again It might not be too early if they release it within 6 years the xbox360 is close to 4yrs. if im not mistaken so a 2011 window seems believable, only problem is are they going to drop the Xbox360 entirely like they did with the original xbox forcing previous owners to make a jump into next gen.....

All Time Greatness5431d ago

Naucious MS just said for like the 20 time again at E3 that Xbox 360 will stay out until at least 2015...even if new consoles release. Xbox 360 is here to stay.

Buttons5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

Wait.....There was first an outrageous article about how Microsoft would ditch the 360 (Wouldn't be surprised if they did, honestly) but because TeamXbox adds 'IT DA TRUTH I SWARE' it's suddenly worthy of something?

Naucious5431d ago

sorry wasn't aware of it but my statement was in the form of a question,

also wit that being said in this industry i can only take anybodys statement wether its Sony or MS with a grain of salt, until i actually see it for my self. I guees we will have to wait and see until the next gen consoles drop

Dude4205431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

Ok, whoever thinks MS would ditch the 360 just like that, do your research please. The reason they're not supporting the Xbox anymore is simple, Nvidia stopped the production of the Xbox. When you look at the PS2, it has about 150 million people who purchased it and it's still in production.

Now most of the people who bought an Xbox have already moved on to the 360, so what would be the point of supporting something that's done for? For PS2 however, there is still reason to support it when you read my above paragraph, as the PS3 only has over 20 million units.

*sigh* people sometimes....

HQLocated1115431d ago

They just dropped the price recently and they're planning to abandon the 360 this early?

jammy_705431d ago

this is hard to beleive anyway!

Naucious5431d ago

It was just in the form of a question and someone answered it.. no one is saying that their going to discontinue the xbox360.

So this whole rant that you think were not using our brains is a lil outlandish but like i said before... nothing is guaranteed and i will believe it when I see it, but as for right now the statement is clear that they plan on making it a 10yr. life cycle

some of your statements are misleading and are not facts because there is no definte proof that all original xbox owners have moved "next gen"

there's people that i know that have an xbox and still havent went next gen only cuz they are a casual gamer....

Edit: take it back they bought a wii just found out right now lmao

Tito Jackson5431d ago

Nothing.

Why was this even written?

Dude4205431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

Read my post again, I didn't say all, I said most. Obviously there will be original Xbox owners who won't move to the next Xbox. Maybe there isn't definite proof on that but it makes sense since the sales of the Xbox 360 has already surpassed the original Xbox in shorter time.

and...

"if im not mistaken so a 2011 window seems believable, only problem is are they going to drop the Xbox360 entirely like they did with the original xbox forcing previous owners to make a jump into next gen..... "

Yes I can see you're questioning Microsoft's move. However, you're doing it the wrong way because you're saying it as if Microsoft just felt like dropping the Xbox completely to force people to the 360. Like I said, Nvidia stopped its production, so what is MS going to do? Sit and wait while the PS2 keeps selling and selling and increasing its fanbase? When a lot of original Xbox owners move to 360, do you think the original Xbox will keep making profit? Will developers make profit from the original Xbox?

Now if MS stopped production of the 360, it would have to be a completely different reason. Since they completely own the 360, I don't see why they would drop support.

TheReaper425431d ago

so basically if the 360 dies out on us, we can upgrade to a better (hopefully stable hardware) xbox. It would make the PS2 vs Xbox360 & PS3 vs the new Xbox.

3D technology with Natal? That sounds really cool but I still think that Natal needs some kind of controller or something that gives you some kind of feedback from the games, not just playing with the air. -just like Miyamoto said earlier on an interview

user39158005431d ago

The future its here and The sony based are jealous, because they prefered a pink dildo over true 3D experience.

KingKionic 5431d ago

Not happening.

Why make another console when ones already successful?

Insomnia_845431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

successful?

In the eyes of consumers and part of the media yes, but inside Microsoft no. Don't confuse successful with popular ;)
What would it be of the 360 if it wasn't for all the fees on Live?

@The Master Chief below

They know 360 is NOT successful, that's why they make it popular.
popular =/= best
First =/= best

The Master Chief5431d ago

Well they no 360 is successful but they want to be more so, nothing wrong with that. That's what they all want.

ShabzS5431d ago (Edited 5431d ago )

considering the original xbox ... the 360 is a major success for microsoft... and considering the massive success of ps2 ... the story is a little differnt for sony this time around ... just get this through your head .. both companies are here to stay ..

peeps5431d ago

yep. imo getting the 360 out early may have cost them a lot with all the hardware problems, but it enabled them to be the only company with a 'next gen' system on the market.

If it released at the same time, or after the ps3, even if it had better software etc at launch, the ps2 owners wouldn't have considered a 360.

For me i owned a ps2 and xbox, but all my gaming was on ps2, xbox i just got a few exclusives such as forza and halo 2. I was waiting on getting a ps3 (cus i'd always played ps2 and mates from online were all on ps2 [i joined a clan on ps2 and still with em to this day]) but because i got bored of waiting i ended up buying a 360, followed by a ps3 when it launced.

The fact that the 360 was available to me and the ps3 wasn't certainly made me go out and get 1 and i'm sure it was the same for many others. of course what then happened is a lot of ps2 fans did the same but then didnt bother with a ps3. I think these are the fans who are really hoping for a price drop.

Anyway kinda went off at a tangent lol but my point is when ms do decide to release their next console i think they'll wanna get in before sony and nintendo again (which is why if i were sony i'd wanna get the ps4 out before the next xbox)

JeffGUNZ5430d ago

What are you talking about? Microsoft have mentioned COUNTLESS times how the 360 is MUCH MORE successful than they originally hoped for. If they weren't successful and making money, they wouldn't be able to sell a system for $199. Get your facts straight. The 360 is a very successful system for microsoft.

Makidian5431d ago

3DTV's or some sort of holographic tech is the only thing that will give Natal the ability to succeed, and if that's what they are waiting for then they are complete fools. We're talking at least 3 years for 3D displays to become so mainstream that price isn't a barrier and that's a minimum.

Holo tech would be the best route to take Natal into VR territory, which would be pretty awesome, full immersion is what will make a controller-less experience work right. Microsoft execs must smoke crack before all their meetings and then leak things to the press when they are high, just to get people going.

KingKionic 5431d ago

This article was refering to shan kim`s interview. He said

""Conceptually, the launch of Natal will be like the launch of Xbox 360," Microsoft's head of long-term Xbox 360 strategy, Shane Kim, told Kotaku during an interview at E3. "It's going to be that big. We're not just going to ship it when the hardware and software are ready. We have to make sure that there are enough content experiences that are really good. That's similar to how you would think of the launch of a new console. It's got to have a great launch line-up. That's the same thing here."

7 Iconic Games That Put The PS1 On The Map

The first PlayStation is home to an array of iconic video games that went on to define the sheer significance of this console.

SimpleSlave1d 7h ago

I think from a historical perspective I would change Spyro for Grand Turismo. It's the franchise that made the PS1 look like an absolute unit. Other than that, I can't argue with the rest when it comes to games that defined the PS1.

And to be honest, there should be space for Tekken 3, Wipepout and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater in order to round out the PS1 identity as the machine to own at the time.

With Tomb Raider 2, Silent Hill, Symphony of the Night, Tenchu, and Soul Reaver as backup contenders.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle3d ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18813d ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio3d ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Lightning772d ago

What he said was facts. How he plays games is no concern of you. Don't get too mad about it.

Cacabunga3d ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

darthv722d ago

to you it may seem like the minority... but your bubble is shrinking because more and more are following suit. convenience is a hell of a drug and its also why physical sales only amount to 30% of overall game sales. times are changing, you either get with them or you get left behind.

neutralgamer19922d ago

Darth

30% physical sales: yet Phil and xbox division are in a rush go give up on that 30%. they don't have any right to give up any piece of the pie since the control such a little of the pie to begin with

also, the market is clearly speaking that the model Xbox is pushing isn't working right now the keyword being right now. you are right about freedom to play anywhere so i hope they put their games on steam

shinoff21833d ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga3d ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan2d ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

S2Killinit2d ago

MS is after diminishing consoles as a medium. They want to destroy this market because they couldnt win. MS’s vision is to dissolve console gaming.

romulus232d ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv722d ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

TheEroica2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Perfectly reasonable post down voted by insecure corporation friendly folk.... But not gamers. Real gamer want accessibility and ease of acquisition for all.... Company shills are the only ones still telling us that hardware locking people from games is good for us.

Chevalier2d ago

@Darth

You should stop parroting metrics like an idiot without context.

"Xbox content and services revenue grew 62% in Q3 from a year earlier, “driven by 61 points of net impact” from the purchase of the third-party video game giant, Microsoft said."

61 of the 62% was from their merger so net increase is ONLY 1%

itsmebryan2d ago

@chevalier

It looks like made a great purchase. Much better then Sony buying Bungie. 😉

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos3d ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

DOMination-2d ago

In the last two years they've started exiting the consumer market altogether. All of the newest Surface products are business models only. They can't seem to work out what they want to do with it.

XBManiac3d ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1013d ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic3d ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

MrDead2d ago

The only growth MS will get out of the console industry is if it supports it's rivals platforms. Xbox is a pointless machine now. I can see them on a big push for live next, and they won't give up on trying to buy Steam.
