Sony has hit the 400 million Euro mark to cap off its launch week that saw PAL territories snag 600,000 of Sony's units to make the PS3 not only the most expensive console to date but also, according to ChartTrack, the fastest selling one in game history.

Dude, the PSP was the original record holder in Europe and now is broken by the PS3. However, where is the PSP now? Getting it's "rear" handed over by the Nintendo DS. Adjusted for inflation the Intellivision and the Atari 5200 were the most expensive game systems of all time. Adjusted for inflation they cost about $950. The Atari 2600, one of the most popular game systems ever, cost about $700 in 1978 dollars. I know, I was there. :) Also, in regards to the prices of games, they ALL cost $50, ALWAYS and forever. To those whiners who complain about $70-$100 games- FU, we paid through the nose for really crappy games and had no way to rent them to try them out first and paid about $150 in today's dollars for them.

The article actually says that the PS3 is the fastest selling console in the history of U.K. not in the history of Europe. Also, WHO CARES?! The PS3 was expected to sell out in Europe, the real test will come in this later year; will it continue to sell at $850? Besides "history" is relative. There are 2.5 BILLION more people on this planet then there was in 1978 when the Atari 2600 was released. Remember that Video Games until the late 90's were considered to be a fad that was going to die any day. The market has grown considerably since those halcyon days. The 2600 sold 30 million systems. The NES sold 60 Million and the PS2 has sold 100 million and counting.

This does not mean that the PS3 will sell 200 million, far from it. I think that the PS3 will remain in the number three position, even behind a system that is not even "next gen." This generation is really just laying down the gauntlet for the "final battle" for the next-next generation. Like I said before, I just hope the PS3 does not sink Sony.

Sony can boast all the "impressive" sales figures it wants to, the fact is that they are losing at least $200 on each PS3 sold. So let's say for the sake of argument that the PS3 sold 1 million PS3's in Europe and Australia, that's at least a $200,000,000 LOSS.

The Wii is making a profit out of the starting gate and will only continue to make a tremendous profit in the years to come. Even the 360 is turning a small profit. Sony cannot continue to bleed money on losses from selling a product intended to be the end all and be all of it's company. Sony cannot absorb the immense R and D and production costs for at least another two years in order to just BREAK EVEN, let alone make the massive profits garnered by the PS2.

If you want to look at the truth, the Wii is the only real winner in the "next gen" race. Both Sony and Microsoft poured massive amounts of money into the development of their systems, which will take a very long time to become totally profitable. Nintendo is literally printing money right now and even if the "fad" of the Wii only lasts through this Christmas it will certainly slow the adoption of the other next gen formats through displacement.

The PS2 has sold 111 Million units as of last month, NOT 200 Million as you so incorrectly stated.

The Xbox sold roughly THE SAME EXACT amount by March 2006 that the PS3 has sold by March 2007. The exact amount is 360=3.19 Million Vs. PS3 3.07 Million. This is regarded to be a PUSH. I give the PS3 kudos for selling the same amount as the 360, but at a much higher price, but this most certainly does not mean that the same sales trends for the PS3 will continue into 2007. Best case, Sony sells a total of 10 Million PS3's by this time next year. That means that consumers will have to spend about FOUR BILLION dollars on buying the PS3, let alone games and peripherals. The total videogame market annual value, including ALL forms of gaming, not just console games, is around $13 Billion per year and growing. For the PS3 to sell an additional SEVEN MILLION consoles by this time next year it would take at least 30% of all videogame sales in a year's time; that's around FOUR BILLION Dollars.

Once again, you prove you know NOTHING about Sony's financial status in regards to the PS3 launch. Yes, Sony is a large company, but in order to launch the PS3, Sony had to take out an enormous loan of $700 Million dollars. This is the first time in the company's history it has had to ever borrow any money. Also you have no understanding how long it takes to make up for a $250 loss per system; it is going to take at least the life of the console for Sony to start making a profit per each console sold till they can eliminate the loss per console down, or eliminate it entirely.

The original loss per PS3 was pegged at $306. Best case scenario, Sony has shaved an additional $50 off of that cost per unit for the European launch. Contrast that with the 360 a year after launch it is making about $76 in profit per console sold. Who knows what the Wii is making, but it is safe to say that Nintendo has always made a profit on everything they have ever made sans the Virtua-Boy failure.

Honestly, the only true Winner is Nintendo. They "duct-taped" two gamecubes together and the everyone loves it.

Put even simpler, there is only so much of the pie to go around. The 360 will sell at least another five million systems on Halo 3 alone and the new Resident Evil on the Wii coming out this year will sell a truckload of Wiis. Both of Sony's competitors are WAY ahead and with Sony's high price and that it's losing an incredible amount on each PS3, means that it's going to be a rough road for Sony.

Hopefully they will emerge a much wiser company for the next-next generation.

Sorry, but Sevenout is right. PS2 sales thus far is just over 100 million, and just because Sony sell loads of DVD players and TVs, doesn't mean they are the richest electronics company in the world. This is indeed good news for the PS3, and I honeslty don't know who would not have expected the PS3 to sell well at launch. Sure, there may be PS3s sitting on the shelves, but when it's already outsold the rivals, who can complain?

I'm a crazy MF and you have no idea what my life's like and I venture to say if anyone on this site spent a day in my life -- they would have a greater appreciation for what some call "Living". As far as big toys go -- Everything in TEXAS is BIG my man. I've got lots of family in California and they do things big too, but just not quite o the same scale as here in the Lone Star State, Sidar. lol Yep -- many people hate us for the pride and joy we take in our state, but the truth is the truth. Maybe where you come from -- small things and modest offerings are the norm, but not here. This is the HOME of Big and Bigger, so forgive me for showing off. I've got boatloads of sh1t I could slam on N4G just for boasting purposes, but it's not necessary. From ATV's to stretches of land with rivers running through it, to livestock, to BMX bikes, MX bikes, my house, chicks, whatever dude ---- c'mon I'm not about that I just have what I have that ALMIGHTY GOD has blessed me to have and if I show some of it and it offends you ---- so, so, sorry.

As far as making love to the PS3 -- I dunno about that, but as much stock as we have in SNE they should be making love to my entire family.
