Record-breaking 165,000 PS3s sold at UK launch

"ChartTrack has confirmed that 165,000 PS3 units were sold during the console's launch weekend."

I will say this. It is a good sign. £425, bad press, lower bc...massive sales. They speak for themselves POG. If you don't want to compare then that's fine. But the point about having so many units is so they can sell...and not fall for this "they're arent any there..." in order to raise hype.

This was always going to happen. It is no reflection on the quality of the consoles that have gone before the PS3 or the actual PS3.

165,000 (if taken as fact) is the actual demand for the PS3 which could be argued as actually quiet low. The Wii is still sold out everywhere, now i haven't heard sales figures since christmas but it supposedly sold around 250,000 in the 5 weeks before christmas. Now it must have sold closer to 400,000 / 450,000 and demand is yet to slow.

Now i am not bad mouthing the PS3 but everyone that wanted a PS3 got one where as there is still huge demand for a console that has sold 3 times the amount.

It was obvious that the PS3 sales would be a record as its the first console where supply has outstripped demand.

I thought the figure would have been slightly higher (180,000) but 165,000 is still great for Sony and we have to congratulate them on doing a great job in terms of supplies.

It is also great that ebay sellers have not profitted :)

Of course the time of year has negatively effect PS3 demand but that was their own fault.

Now consider that the Wii was launched at the prime launch window so theoretically more people wanted to buy than a normal month. This you would imagine would lead to a sharper peak in sales followed by a more dramatic downward term in sales as we reached March / April. This hasn't happened though proving that demand has defied the time of year factor.

Unfortunately we will not get accurate sales reports for the UK for the month of April which would almost certainly show a huge downward turn in sales for the PS3.

In contrast I am sure the Wii will sell out again and again until the summer

ok i think some people are not thinking through this. only fanboys buy systems at launch and fanboys don't make a console a winner and attract the devs. it is how many you sell after launch (and at christmas) that drives the big numbers. all this tells me is there are 165,000 people in UK that would buy anything at any price as long as it said sony on it. what would be impressive is if they sell 500k more in the coming months.
Just like all the stories during the US launch, fan boys bought it immediatly then it seemed the demand by gamers just isn't there right now.

i don't mind buying the things i want, i know price will drop with time but i'm the type of person that if i want something i go buy it. i'm not going to sit around a wait two or three years for the price to drop. i buy the systems with their warranties and sit around and laugh while you guys go back and forth about which is better.

The thing to remember is us nerds on the internet, only get heard by other nerds on the internet.

To the mainstream society Playstation has a really good name. Exceptional in fact. These people know it has tech and features other consoles dont have. They know it will get plenty of good games including follow ups to all the ones they love now. They know PS has dominated since it first came out.

They DON'T know about blue lazer diodes causing delays, they don't know about exclusives becoming multiplatform (nor would they care since most dont have an XB) and they dont know who The Mart is.

And the price factor may not be as big a deterent as everyone thinks, as at least for the time being. Face it, when somethings expensive you imediatley think its top of the line and good quality. Thats why Jack Daniels costs more than Early Times bourbon but people dont mind paying for a Jacks. If its worth it to the individual (its well worth it to me) then its not a ripoff. I dont care about price myself but I do care about value.

Anyway, looks like its going pretty well so far and all the nerd tears in the world aren't going to stop it.

The PS3 had supply enough. Like 220k. And still these aren't official numbers.

So 165k die hard Sony fans have bought the PS3. In USA 250k got it at launch. After that the sales decreased. Last month it came down to 130k sold. The 360 sold almost twice that number of consoles.

Thus: launch numbers don't say that much. It depends how it keeps or doesn't keep selling the coming time

I know there has been a lot of negative press here on the interweb about the PS3. People predicting how badly it would sell in Europe.

However now the PS3 has broken sales records in the UK for a home console, people are saying that this is irrelevant because if X/Y console had enough stock it would have sold more - therefore the PS3 sales are actually inferior!

I think the Japanese have a loyalty to Sony. In the USA there is affinity to the Xbox brand that there isnt in the uk.
The PS3 is a very expensive console and it broke records. Now think about how the British public will receive when the price cut comes...

Dont worry about Jin...he's the type of guy that is probably banning Capcom because his beloved DMC is on the 360. It's funny how Jin thinks Microsoft screwed their customers by introducing the Elite. But forgot to mention that the UK ps3 is a downgrade and have to pay the same price as the better ps3. Not to mention it still cant upscale, have to buy seperate controllers if you want rumble, and multiplatform games still looks better on the 360. While the Elite is a lil more expensive than the premium, but atleast it's an upgrade. I dont need HDMI and I already have a 500g HD hooked up to my 360 for HD movie downloads. I dont need an Elite. Anyways, the bottome line people is that you 360 fans got duped into buying the so called "premium" when later they come out with the "Elite". People will buy that, then MS will come out with the "Mega-Elite". These are hardware systems people, not Windows. You suckers are getting duped over and over again. Meanwhile, with all the negative publicity, all the 360 rabid zombies spreading lies about the ps3, the PS3 is still breaking records. Watch when the power of teh PS3 begins to show, and you will see truly the power of the beast. 360 is just a poor mans PS3. They have Gears Of War, nothing great. Then they have some Sony "exclusives" like DMC4, who cares. 3rd party games will go multi platform this time around, its okay. Those companies have to do whats best for them. But the bottom line is, PS3 software is more creative. They are pushing creativity to far beyond what the 360 camp is even thinking about. All 360 is thinking about is, DMC4, FF, MGS. They gotta have those games, but guess what, you can have those games. We are looking into the future, we are looking at new types of games, and experience. Not your FPS games. SO, while the 360 camp is focusing on taking old exclusives, the Sony camp is making totally new IP's. Thats the sign of a leader and follower. Has there been anyhting like Motorstorm on the 360?? NO, they went with PGR3. Come on people, for the 360 to be mentioned in the same breath as the PS3 is a great compliment to the 360. FNR3 looks better on the PS3, Oblivion Looks better on the PS3, Virtua Tennis looks better on the PS3 and a few other games. So dont give me the crap about 360 games looking better. And dont give me that well, they had longer to develop. THe bottom line is, it looks better on PS3. The PS3 broke records in UK. The truth hurts xbox zombies, but deal with it. You guys messed up, and now MS is twisting the knife in your back with the ELITE. Enjoy your "premium".

Think about why you havent seen any truly innovative ways to use the MS vision camera. I'll tell you why, they are waiting for the PS3 to come out with their camera and see how they can copy from it. 360 has been out for well over a year now, and that camera is doing nothing but sitting there and collecting dust. Now when PS3 starts to get its camera and games, guess what......MS will do the same. They are a bunch of copycat losers.

I think 165,000 is great news for the PS3, and there's no way you can twist that to say otherwise, BUT I think its foolish if you are a PS3 fan and you AGAIN forget to use a little perspective along with those numbers because the fact is that Sony had ample supply ready for the demand, as they should after the delay...and thats a good thing for Sony which is smart business in my opinion, however who didn't think there were at least that many early adopters and hardcore PS fans in the UK, actually I'm sure there are at least triple that many hardcore PS fans who will buy one, but you have to at least ask yourself what are they waiting for, I don't think it would be a stretch to say that the "price" is a big factor, but as more of them get over that "hump" I'm sure they will be getting their PS3's in the coming days and months. Now my point is that after those gamers who will buy a PS3 "no matter what" are sold, the question is "how will the PS3 sell to the masses?, like the PS2 did, well it remains to be seen (in Europe) but I think PS fans would be foolish not to be at least somewhat "cautious" because you never know what will happen next week, or next month, or six months from now.....I've seen this pattern before. -But for now and for this news, I think Sony deserves Congratulations on having a healthy supply and some pretty good launch numbers compared to your competitors. -Good Job!

It shouldn't be forgotten or dismissed, that 120 million PS2 owners are out there. They may not be ready yet to join the next gen. They might wait a whole year. They can afford to after all because Sony is still giving them good support. Its M$ that always talk about choice but I think its Sony that have offered the real choice. The choice of upgrading now, or upgrading when you're ready. If you're an XB only gamer there was/is no choice, you upgrade now. If you're a Sony only gamer then you still have time and games no matter what you decide.

People will remember this and those holding off for the next year or two are going to remember what machine as gotten them throught his transition period. Plus, all the follow ups, to all the games they love now will be on PS3. I can't wait to see what the ICO team is up to.

If half of those PS2 owners dont get a PS3 in the next 5 years then I'm not as clever as I think I am. I guess we'll see. You're right but to think it wont be easy for Sony at that price. I'd love to see a price cut and game bundle in November. If it was one of the big titles, (MGS4, FFXIII, KZ2) then it will move alot around christmas.

Ratchet and clank got me excited too and I know DMC going multi bothered alot of people but I think Heavenly sword looks better then that and Ninja Gaiden. 2007 is going to be the year for gaming, I already have a 360 after I beat God of War I'm getting my ps3.

the Wii was in short supply and the Xbox 360 even shorter in supply. So if the PS3 beats its launch record I don't really care because if it didn't that would've been very sad. There is one thing the PS3 can't say over the Xbox 360 or Wii and thats that it didn't have a total sell out like the Wii and Xbox 360 did.

but there's also one thing the Wii or Xbox360 cant say either... that they had enough units to satisfy consumers aswell. This is the type of comments i have the most problems with because you would slam the PS3 when Sony has problems supplying everyone, but now that they are doing so you still take away any "good" news from them. But on the other hand, if the x360 sells out it's the best system ever. Just like when the xbox360 has a lack of AAA titles during the first 5 months, everything is fine. But if something goes wrong with sony .... all hell breaks loose and it's too expensive, and the CHEAPER version sucks, then the PS3 has SERIOUS problems with the amount of AAA games they released in the first FIVE months of it's existance, and the online is also complete crap even for their fist try. So all i want to know is this... How exactly is it a bad thing that Sony is making the PS3 availible to consumers in the first place??? If people are comparing the TOTAL sales and nextgen games currently on the xbox360 to the PS3 NOW, then why is it "unfair" for sony to have more sales given the point that they actually did a way better job supplying their products for the cunsumers in the first place??? sounds like excuses to me.

Congratulations! That comment was completely worthless. The ps3 best game is an year old 360 game in Oblivion. Motorstorm got an average of 83%. The ps3 is failing on what matters most. And that is GAMES! What has ps3 brought to the table that is so creative??? Is it "home?" Well their are TONS of virtual worlds on a pc. So go ahead and decorate your virtual house in "home" While I'm playing AAA titles that the ps3 just cant match! The 6axis controller has been a complete failure.
