07 NPD: Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 Sales

Bloomberg did manage to score January 2007 sales numbers for the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The numbers were handed to Bloomberg from Credit Suisse, who got their numbers from NPD.

Quick recap:

Nintendo Wii: 436,000

Xbox 360: 294,000

PlayStation 3: 244,000

Not far behind? That's only USA numbers.

50k extra for 360 is about 20% of the PS3 sales.
And the 360 already has a headstart of about 11 million units sold. It's very hard to catch up this way. Even if PS3 sold 50k more then the 360 it would take 10 months to catch up with 500k up to the headstart of 11 million 360's out there.

That's insane. And we haven't even accounted sales in Europe, Australia and other parts of the world with it. PS3 won't be able to catch up at least for a long, long time

The PS3 hasn't yet launched in those parts of the world yet. but they all are all pro ps3 so i think it will catch up, it's only a matter of time. And plus there is a torrent of games coming out after the European launch

In fact, it's still not available on Amazon, and it wasn't available at the Gamestops and Best Buys in New York until mid-February.

It's not apples to apples folks. Besides, March is the true Worldwide launch of the PS3 anyhow, and the games are a coming..

smitty you must be smoking something because starting after christmas eb games and gamestop were consistently in stock of ps3. My store had ps3's transfered to us from stores that could not sell them.

another thing ps3 just came out, xbox 360 has been out for a year now and it still sold more in the u.s. then the ps3 in Jan, and some ppl call that good, I dont think so.

We've seen how one game can change it in Japan...what happens when ps3 starts releasing ll its games in March +. It is going to sell more than this and it will sustain itself throughout the year, and grow in numbers as more great games come out. Yes the 360 will do the same with the likes of Halo...but if it's neck and neck when one is $200 more than the other, that's kind of crazy I think.

I wouldv liked to have seen the ps3 sell much less than that, so they'd do a price drop quickly!

As far as I'm aware the sales figures here are for January in the US. The PS3 should have creamed the 360 and the Wii but didn't. There is still PS3s unsold. You can't get a Wii for love or money and the 360 sales are still above the PS3. As it stands if I was Sony I would be worried. I live in the UK, 360 are in shops, you can order a PS3 everywhere but Wii is like goldust! Game are still unable to fill orders and that is after being on sale for 4 months!

why is it surprising that the 360 didn't take in more??? the console is older... i say the bigger surprise is that even with the availability of the ps3 it didn't beat the 360 in sales. You would think that a new console which has only been out for a very short while would be totally out selling one which has been out for over a year. I think Sony should take a look at the Wii sales as to what they should be selling.

absolutly, the ps3 just launched and was in supply in january (so you can't use the well there wasn't a ps3 so they bought a 360 excuse). i would have expected the ps3 to win the month of january due to the early adopters (fanboys). i am actually surprised the 360 sold more in january, and by a 20% margin. the wii is cheap (compared to 360 and ps3) and still riding the hype the train so their sales don't surprise me but they won't maintain it because the gimmick will wear off. i am already starting to read more and more articles written on the fact people are starting to realize that it is a gimmick and lets face it, grandma and grandpa and 12yr olds don't buy alot of games. but 360 owners do, ps3 owners would if they had anything worth buying right now.

It doesn't surprise me really that the 360 sold more. Microsoft has done a fine job of reducing the consoles price here in Canada. My bro picked up the premium bundle with 3 games, Gears of War and another controller for 499. That would be like 399 in the States. By contrast, PS3 was 599 at the time........with no games and 1 controller.

North America is an obstacle for PS3 as many have said in the past. Ok fine thats a good statement. I take it in account 360 has a year lead well developed Game library and its US built. We all know how US loves to stand behind their products. So why is it that when the PS3 sells 34,000 units in Japan and the 360 sells 9,000 fanboys spin it and say wow thats an accomplishment for the 360. But when the $600 dollar PS3 with *claimed* inferior multi platform titles and 1 exclusive game sells 244,000 to the $400 dollar Xbox360's 294,000 its still spun to be bad news for PS3?

The Japanese make really good products that last longer than American products, Thus saving us more moolah. That's why we buy Japanese cars and game systems. 360 is actually a good product that can compete with the best of Japanese products. That's why there are such strong opinions about these two systems. However, relating to this article. 360 selling 20% more is not a good sign. I was kinda expecting more like 50%. These numbres only validate my choice in going with the PS3.

I think the majority of people on this site would be considered a fanboy of one camp or another. Some are certainly more outspoken than others but on a whole most of the people on here have a system of prefered choice, and for the lucky few they also have bought the other systems. However I am still pretty certain that the owners of all three will still trend to one console over the others, etc.

Reality is we all are a bit of a fanboy when it comes to our consoles because...we want validation in knowing we chose "correctly". Nobody, I mean nobody would go out and buy a console that was deemed the looser and a non-factor by the media/forums/sales figures. So we are all sitting in these forums bantering back and forth about who will win what because we are seeking that validation that we were right..."I made the right choice", blah, blah. Again nobody wants to feel like a looser in their personal choice...because it was their personal choice. A perfect non-console example. I recently (year ago) bought a used VW Jetta as a 2nd car for work commute. That thing has turned into the biggest lemon in the world! I hate admitting it because I totally am wasting money on it due to repairs ..and its a sting blow to my pride. I picked out a crap car and I have nobody to blame but myself. I did some due dilegence when selecting it...reading up, etc. but alas...it just didn't go my way. I still defend the car claiming its a solid car to others but inwardly I am bitter at how much this decision cost me.

So basically (sorry for the tangent) we all want to feel good about our choices and preferences. Nobody wants to be told they are wrong or f'd up in their choice to buy a console so we sit here and name call and point fingers trying to show other here as well as the world that our choice was correct.

The fact of the matter is ....this generation of consoles we are all going to be winners with our choices. This won't be a 10 year life cycle again. More like 6. And each of the consoles out there is going to perform well enough that nobody will be able to claim outright they were the "winner" of the "next-gen" console wars. This is a generation of choices. Choose the console you want based on the things you like...and you will be rewarded. Wether its solid gaming and online w/ the 360, high end blu-ray added in gaming with the PS3 or funky fun with the mote and the Wii...you will have a good experience and enjoy gaming for many years.

How long have we been listening to the 360 crowd saying the PS3 is to expensive, poor game library compared to the 360 and not only that the 360 has the better looking cross platform games. They tell us there is no reason to buy the PS3. They tell us no one is buying the PS3. they tell us the PS3 has lost the war.

Funny that inspite of all this and the fact the console has had supply problems (don't start with yeah every retailer in the US had stock piles of PS3 for the entire month because we all know that's not true.) The PS3 has sold almost the same number as the 360. I would imagine that as the PS3 gets more and more games that it will over take the Xbox 360 in monthly sales in the U.S.

Remember its not who sprints into the lead at the beggining that determines the winner its who crosses the finish line first at the end. Its a 5 year + race. The 360 has yet to prove its even grown its market share over the Xbox never mind defeating Sony and the PS3.

Wow, some of you sound happy about this. It's not really good news for anybody but the wii.

1. One month after launch, the PS3 should be outselling the 360, but it isn't. And don't kid yourself about "It hasn't launched in Europe yet" because these figures are from the US only. when you add european figures for the PS3, you'll still be adding european figures from the 360. I dread to think what this will look like when the fuss for the PS3 dies down. And don't forget, the PS3 costs £425 in England, compared to the 360's £280. I don't think we'll really embrace it like we did the 360.

2. As for the 360, They should be a bit worried about the Wii doubling their sales like that. It might be the new kid, which gives it an early popularity boost, but the only thing stopping them selling more is lack of supply. Neither the PS3 nor the 360 should need to worry about a cheaper inferior console with a gimmick, but the fact is, people are choosing the wii INSTEAD of the 360 and PS3, not as well as.

3. The Wii is doing very well so far, escpecially considering it is sold at a profit. They realised that alot of people want to call themselves gamers, but not all of them are willing to make an effort to play, or spend alot of money. Personally, I give them respect for knowing what will appeal to the masses, but i'll tell you: If every games console was like the wii, i'd give up gaming.

Reguardless of what I think of Nintendo, they continue to dominate the gaming market, well..... at least in terms of profitability.

I've always liked Nintendo, but ever since the N64, I have been alienated as a fan. I thought sticking to cartridge was a huge mistake, and PS One was argueably the greatest console of all time. I owned a GC, but I honestly never used it over my XBox. I think Nintendo made big mistakes on both N64 and GameCube, but their handheld division is straight dominate.

As a gamer, I cant play cartoons all the time. I'm 23 and got 2 kids, so while Nintendo would be great for them, I need a deeper selection of titles. Occasionally I may want to play a good platform, but sometimes you just need to blow someones head off if you know what I mean. Admitfully, Zelda looks great, but outside of that, you need friends along side you to truely enjoy what the Wii brings to the table, and to me it shouldnt have to be like that.
