Fallout 3 Producer Disappointed in Diablo 3

Bethesda Softworks' Ashley Cheng, the Producer of Fallout 3 stated his disappointment of Diablo 3's announcement on his blog in a post entitled "When the ship runs out of ocean."

Being pissed about it incorporating systems to keep up the the current standards that can only heighten the emersion is absolutely retarded. I see a lot of people playing the whole pseudo I'm a true fan card. For example I've been a huge MGS fan from day one, but did you see me moaning when they incorporated a camera system that helps break down that this is only a game barrier? Or how about when they improve the shooting system so that I have better accuracy? I see this close mindedness all the time in music, and everything else, but if you don't like progression, and want the same thing over, and over than just stick with the first record, and quite the complaining. There's no point in doing a sequel if you're not trying to improve, and change things, and if they didn't then logical people would really complain saying, "this is blah blah blah 1.5 I feel ripped!" I definitely see what you're saying, but at this point we don't really know what this game has to offer, and to count it out due to its name frankly seems a bit shallow since you admitted yourself the game shows a lot of promise. If Fallout could have gotten the rights from EA for the name Wasteland then they most likely would have. Now you asked if I played the other games, and the answer is no, but I've been in your shoes before, and I can relate. However not matter what you feel it's not your game, and you don't own the rights to the game, and if they sold it to people who genuinely feel they know what's best for the franchise then thats their business.. You don't know what's in the Bethesda hearts. I'm on the end where I've heard what they've done to the system, and it doesn't seem like I big deal to me personally or that it can be anything, but helpful. I think as long as you get the same type of feeling while playing it, and the story-line continuation feels natural than they've done their job. That aspect can only be told when you ACTUALLY PLAY the game, and that's something you can tell me once you played it since you played the others. alright, that's fair, but Bethesda only got fallout rights because Interplay was closing due to money problems so the sale wasn't in the best interest of the franchise, as for innovation being dead, it is (on AAA titles) there is too much money getting spent on games nowadays that publishers will not allow developers to go outside the box, while there will be a few games coming out with a few innovative features, there will never be a title that will kick you in the teeth with innovation, you can only innovate so far. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, Fallout III won't be a bad game it just will be a kick in the balls as a fan of the franchise.

The interface in WoW along with much of the game comes from Diablo. Not the other way around. Skill trees in WoW come from Diablo, the ! over a persons head for quests comes from Diablo.Repair system comes from Diablo. All they took from WoW was the 10 button hotkey system. Well luckily I had the half assed pc port of Oblivion so I could mod it, there are some fantastic mods out there that make the game more like the originals, like removing the horrible horrible leveling up system (what's the point of leveling up when everything levels up with you?) and fixing AI and adding a few cool new features, I haven't touched 360 Oblivion in a while though, yep I think we can all call bethesda the "franchise ruiners" from now on, because in stead of developing an isometric Fallout and releasing it as a PC exclusive, they decided to do much like Oblivion and whore out to the consoles, and for some reason when a developer puts something on a console, he for some reason, decides the dumb down the gameplay and simplify everything.

How many games have come out in the last 12 months that have failed? You'd think some people would learn to just hold their opinion until they have something real to base it on.

There have been few to games this gen that have actually impressed me as they are nothing but more polished versions of previous releases and offer nothing new. A prime example of this is Devil May Cry 4. Slick visuals but nothing new in the gameplay stakes.

For me, I will wait to see how both Fallout and Diablo play when they are released before I judge either.

It's what made Diablo big that Blizzard is sticking with. Keep it Isometric, but implement some innovative features to keep the player satisfied. That's one of the reason of what gaming SHOULD be about, making the player come back for more. And apperently, Blizzard has had a better time doing that than Bethesda. As for Fallout 3, I wasn't feeling really bad until I recently saw Diablo 3 in all of its isometric glory and after that, I just couldn't be interested much in the FPS Fallout that Bethesda has made. As another great member said, it should have been called Fallout: East or Fallout FPS.

i think diablo's story is better, and making a game a pc exclusive doesn't in any way make it worse. maybe it will hurt overall sales, but it doesn't make the game worse in any way. and blizzard knows how to do it right, they make it so many pcs can run their games, unlike the other ignorant companies that basically require you to have a 2 or 3 thousand dollar computer, which most people don't have.

Diablo 3 might be more addictive but Fallout 3 will have a much better story and character progression. Diablo has an always will be a boring clickfest for loot, nothing more. Entertaining when I was 12 maybe, but I actually want something more out of a game than pretty looking loot, and it honestly isn't that pretty. Other than the destructible environments, it looks exactly the same as Diablo 2 with a higher resolution. And as it was stated, there will be even MORE mouse clicking in this Diablo. that's an awful lot of opinion there. fact is, most people who played Diablo know that it's anything but boring. Having more plot doesn't inherently make a game better either. Ultimately you're intitled to your opinion of course, but recognize that nearly all of the people who played D1 and D2 don't share it.

I dont see how you can claim that , seeing how diablo 2 had more plot than oblivion . Bethesda titles strength arent really the story , but their open world where you can (in appearance) do whtaver you want ... wich usually translate in bethesda's case by the interesting plots being locked away in library books , and you not really following a main quest that sucks , but dwelling in caves and hoter quests .

D2 actually had a lot of dialogues and plot for a game of his genre , and did more than just a meager intro cinematic .

Yes diablo 2 had a strong main plot but there were only 6 objectives per act whereas Oblivion has dozens of sidequests in every town and entire career paths to progress down. My main point, i guess, is that I didn't mind not having hundreds of quests in D2, and I never found it to be a boring game.

I played Diablo 1 and 2 religiously when I was younger. I'm not saying Bethesda is great at everything either. In fact if I had to vote which was better, I'd pick a third option. No one really plays Diablo for its story. It's a dungeon crawler loot fest, Blizzard even says so themselves. My point was that Diablo 3 by the looks of it does not vary at ALL from the previous games other than the destructable environments and a SLIGHT graphics upgrade. It's a single player MMO, a grindfest for loot with no skill in pulling off any moves, just a click of a mouse key like any MMO, except with a lot less of the side content. This is going to be a simpler version of WoW with an isometric view. I'm not saying it's not fun, or that it's boring, I'm saying that Bethesda games are typically a lot "deeper".

Why change something that really isn't broken?

Why are millions of people still playing Starcraft and Diablo 2? It's got nothing to do with the graphics its because the most important factor is the gameplay which these games have ample amounts of. First-person perspective are not always the best way to go, and it's not like the market is not already flooded with generic FPS games.

Blizzard has always stuck to their guns to make the games they feel should be made and how they want the game to look and run. If anything there likely trying to expand on the games that are still loved and been able to put things into the game that was not possible 10 years at the same time not alienating its fanbase in the process.

I'm actually going to go home and install Diablo 2 now :D

Basically what you're saying is, go with the tried-and-true, the safer route, and don't try to innovate or improve anything for the sake of improving the storytelling, the presentation, the level of immersiveness...

It's not as though going with a 3D camera or even first-person camera would necessitate a change in the core gameplay. You could do the exact same gameplay as the previous Diablo games, but with a more flexible, controllable camera.

For all we know, Fallout 3 could turn out to be extremely similar gameplay-wise as the other Fallouts, except that the perspective is first-person.

They're not even really comparable experiences. Fallout 3 looks incredibly epic, immersive, and vast in scale. It's a fully realized, fully traversable and explorable post-apocalyptic WORLD, the likes of which we've never seen rendered before in a videogame. The project is INCREDIBLY ambitious, as should be apparent to anyone.

On the other hand, it doesn't even look like Diablo 3 is TRYING to be competitive in that area. It's essentially delivering the same basic tried-n-true Diablo gameplay that we've seen in the past, and it looks like Blizzard is going to achieve that. However, the two don't compare in terms of immersiveness, vastness of the gameworld, and epic adventure feel.

I think he is more disappointed in the fact that Diablo III doesn't seem to be doing much new and different then the past games. When I saw it I said awesome it looks just like Diablo should. However there is a side at me that wonders what Diablo 3 could be like if they didn't limit it to the franchise formula. No doubt Diablo III will be incredible and I will be picking it up day one whenever that may be. But with both StarCraft 2 and Diablo III it seems that Blizzard is playing it safe by making the game more of the same with far better graphics and much deeper game play. Not that that's a bad thing though.

Im excited for fallout 3 too. This guy says starcrat should be FPS too. NOT AT ALL. THE ONE STRATEGY GAME THAT SHOULD HAVE A FPS option is HALO WARS. Imagine playing halo wars, kinda like starcraft right. Not if you could command you troops, build your base and then switch to FPS mode as one of the heros. uhh heros like a spartan? uhh yeah. Halo with a 3d starcraft ripoff add on, that would be awsome and people might actually buy it.

If you actually read it he said that he wished Starcraft had a battlefield first person perspective option, where, for example, you could zoom in on one particular unti (possibly a hero) and play that character as a first person shooter for a bit, then go back to strategy. Just a new addition to the game for fun. That actually would be fun to be able to zoom in on one unit and bring the battlefield perspective to first person for a bit, and see things through that perspective.

Diablo 3 and Fallout 3 both have all my respect

But the Fallout 3 producer is wrong. They MUST be conservative with these games. They must keep the same good ol' feeling. The only thing I wish they change is making Fallout 3's combat more fast paced, and it seems to be what they're doing

What's interesting here is the numerous defenders of Diablo III and Starcraft II.

In the console world sequels which fail to deliver substantial updates in visuals/gameplay over their predecessors, are declared version .5 of said predecessor.

Why in the PC realm does this not happen?

Why does every game have to change drastically. If it changed totally then it would be complaints about it not being like the original 2. Just play the game, it's gonna be amazing.

Really all I can say is that as long as Bethesda keeps the atmosphere and the intelligence behind the series intact I will probably be pretty happy with it.

I do have to agree that Oblivion was a step back in alot of ways from Morrowind but I think bethesda is just trying the make their games more accessible to a wider audience. I really can't say as a fan that I am happy with that direction, but from a business standpoint I do understand it.

I had a few friends of mine play Morrowind when it came out on the Original Xbox and alot of them whined because it was too difficult, and those same friends ended up loving Oblivion. I like alot of the things that have been shown about Fallout 3 especially the character creation system,and the choice system sounds much more involved this time around. so I kind of believe we should hold off judgement until we can actually play the game.

The Fallout games have always been great RPGS and from what I have seen it doesn't look to me like 3 is going to disappoint. The game maybe different, but just because Bethesda is changing aspects to fit what they know doesn't mean that it will be bad.

As far as Diablo 3, I will buy it and play it, and probably love it as much as I did 2, but sometimes when watching the videos I do wish you could go 3rd person, but thats not a huge problem for me.

People will always have on opinion, and any time a series changes, the fans will normally always get pissed off to some extent, I can attest to this the most with Final Fantasy, I hated 12 compared to previous games, it just didn't feel like Final Fantasy should. I personally think thats the most important thing in any franchise keeping that Iconic feel that makes these games so popular from the start.

what is this huge backlash against bethesda for? They have done nothing but make some truly great games. Sure oblivion was a step down for morrowind, but morrowind was one of th best games of all time. Oblivion was still a great game. None of you have played fallout 3, so stop complaining and saying how they ruined the franchise like a bnuch of 8 year olds.
