360 and PS3 sales rocket during bumper Easter

MCV: The race between Xbox 360 and PS3 shifted up a notch this past week as both consoles saw huge leaps in hardware sales, thanks to the Easter break.

Though PS3 is still outselling 360 regularly week-on-week and in terms of year-to-date sales, the Sony and Microsoft platforms both saw a 73 and 78 per cent rise in hardware sales respectively this week.

Nintendo's mega-selling Wii and DS also saw significant rises, despite stock concerns.

There has been a slight improvement, but it seems that Europe is still a Sony stronghold.

In the UK its helped the 360 pull it level, but in mainland europe its had very little effect, and i suspect GT5:P will cancel out the effect of the 360 Price cut.

Also as for Advertising i see more MS ad's then any other.

I think it (gt effect) already has rained on x360 parade. then again if you think about it...x360 didn't have the price cut before gta, it had it the week preceding the release of GT. Reports were coming from all over the place that Gt was selling bucketloads...

even after a price cut. That's good news for Sony. I'm sure with the release of GT5p and maybe Everybody's golf the PS3's sales will continue to stay ahead of the 360's like it has been. The price drop has just lessened the sales gap

i have a PS3 but am i the only one not excited by this GT5 prologue? I'm not paying for a demo then paying for the full game gain in a year. I'll play Forza2 and Burnout until GT5 is out properly.

Hmmmm, I didn't buy it. I downloaded the GT5 demo off the JPN psn when it was available but only played it like once but then again, I'm not a racing game fan. However I can apreciate Prologue for what it is and as many have said, although not quite the same scale as a full GT, PGR or Forza it's still an incredibly good racing game (that blows away a lot of lesser full priced racers) for a great price. As Mighty Douche stated in another GT5:P thread, Asda are doing it for £18 in the UK. That's peanuts for a game of this caliber if you're a fan.

But I'm more an action game fan myself.

The cheap price of the 360 could have a negative consequence. People will see that, and see the more expensive PS3 (a brand they know well in Europe) and assume its more of the premium and hence buy that. But as the PlayStation 3 market grows, I think it'll drown out Microsoft's influence eventually.

Truplaya, I'm one with a ps3 that's not excited about GT5:P. I've never been into cars games, I've tried but never liked it. I'm more into JRPG and platformer kind of games.

uk was 360,s strong hold but as you can see the ps3 is out selling the 360 and has been for some time most people know theres 4 big titles out between april and june gt5, gtaiv,haze, mgs4 360 hasn,t any think close to them,hence the price drop

what some people tend to forgeting here is that the 360 has been out a year more here in the uk, and for to be STILL selling well and on PAR with a year younger machine shows you the popularity of 360, if it stays like this then the 360 will be console of choice for the uk, just like the ps2 was, the ps3 needs to be trippling the sales to be able to catch up. people are tending to forget this

the 360 is very very popular in the uk! nearly everyone i know who is into gaming has one, plus a live account! and like me, all these people had and loved their ps2s. and like you said, considering it's been around a year longer, and is probably only being outsold(let's see what the npd say) by a couple of thousand, shows just how popular it's become! europe will be sonys for a bit longer, but in the uk the ps3 has a fight on it's hands.

sony does need to triple it's sales to to catch microsoft there.

Over here in the uk almost all of my game playing mates have a 360 and two have a ps3. I guess things in the uk will change over the year but i honestly think that it will still stay a 360 zone this year.

I say this because the big draw for most of us is the online community and even the guys that have a ps3 are gonna be getting 360's so they can play with the rest of us on live.

When i look at the ps3 exc i see great games but not many that imbrace the online exp except the shooters and gt prologue although a basic form. I think this was a big oversight by Sony and could make a massive difference this gen if the online exp of the ps3 is not rectified soon.

I think there will be more people wanting a cheap console to play online with this year then those that want a br player and to play great single player games

Be interesting to see whether price and a good games libary or br, a few great exc and Gt prologue can sell more consoles.

Notice the name of this story "360 and PS3 sales rocket" don't tell me a year older system is still keeping up with the brand new shiney PS3??? Even with brand loyality, 120mil PS2 userbase it is falling way short. It will take the PS3 years to catch up to the 360 install base and that will lead it to one place, 3rd.

i have 1 problum with bth systems thats allps3: backword capability is a load of pish im playing final fantasy 12 right now and boy o boy its bad the ships are all pixilixed and blury the screen tears to much (i have 60 gig ps3) only dows it on movie sence tho

My buddy just bought a 360 for the first time and he got the newer "falcon" model and it runs quiet and cool. It really doesn't sound any louder than my PS3 or run any hotter. We played it for probably 2 hours and it was just fine.

If you ever consider buying one, look for the 175watt on the barcode of the box and make sure it is the model with the HDMI output, those will be falcons.

My box from 8 months ago has a sticker with barcodes on it and it says HDWR NTSC ZEPHYR. Im pretty sure that all of them now are the falcons, but it wouldent hurt to check.

As for GT5. I have been playing for about an hour, and so far I feel a little disappointed with the graphics. Don't misunderstand what I am saying, the graphics are good, just the videos looked way better. And the handling still has some understeer, and the game is a bit sterile to play.

GT5 for me is not a system seller. The name of the game is a system seller, but not the game itself. Not with PGR4 and Forza2 already out on the 360. Unless of course, you say those two games are system sellers as well.

Actually, this is good news for Xbox 360. 360 is selling neck in neck with the PS3 considering big games traditionally on PS is coming out (GTA IV) and Metal Gear Solid 4 soon.

Xbox 360 has generally been weak in Europe and the only country they have done well at is UK, but considering the expected added momentum for Sony, MS is doing well. This is good news for the consumers in the 'hardcore' gaming industry. The best market for gamers is when one company is just slightly ahead of the other.
