Sony, Microsoft Discuss Blu-ray for Xbox 360 ; Might Be Included in New Elite Models

Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360, according to a senior executive.

The Japanese electronics maker has until now touted Blu-ray as an advantage its PlayStation 3 holds over Microsoft's console. Microsoft has backed Toshiba's HD-DVD format and offered an HD-DVD drive that can be plugged into the 360.

But after Sony's victory last month in the high-definition DVD format war, Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, said the two sides were now talking about Microsoft adopting Blu-ray.

A Blu-ray drive in a 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with the PS3, but it would also mean extra revenues for Sony's electronics division. It would also add further cost to the 360, meaning a premium edition of the console could be necessary.

Joey - You know Blu-ray can't be used for future 360 games. That won't work. History has proved that most gamers won't buy upgrades to play new games. If all 360 owners were forced to buy a Blu-ray add-on to play new games Microsoft would have a lot of angry gamers. That's why it won't happen.

I've said this from the beginning of this current generation war. Microsoft released the 360 around six months too soon. They should have waited for HD DVD to come out and include an HD DVD drive in every 360. They should have included a hard drive too. I guess they didn't want to have an expensive console this time where they lose hundreds of dollars per unit. Sony at least makes a lot of the parts in the PS3 so they can get parts at cost.

I agree with you except about the storage capacity for 360 games. Unfortunately this will just be for watching movies, unless Microsoft wants to make it the equivalent of Sega CD. And we all know how that worked out... they took the Genesis which was extremely successful and then started making games for an optional add-on that didn't sell well at all, which also happened with the 32x, the Jaguar CD, and the TurgoGrafx 16 CD, and virtually every other console add-on. None of them become successful for games. While the Genesis was a very successful system, its add-on peripherals were not.

The reason Microsoft couldn't start making all of their games published in Blu-Ray format is because it completely alienates all of the people who've bought 360's up to this point and forces them to buy another unit to play the games that will come out henceforth. That's horrible business. But to make an add-on where just a select few games are released on the Blu-Ray format would likely be a failing decision. Games cost too much to make to alienate the majority of the user base for a platform, so they'll just continue to release all games so they're playable on a standard 360.

Ill still buy a ps3 when its cheaper and use that for my BR player. The 360 games will never be only on blueray, and they dont really need to be. I dont buy very many movies to begin with and don't see me buying many blue rays either, cause they cost even more. But you do have to understand something. You said those articles you mention go back over more than a year. The landscape has changed A LOT within a year's time. What might not have been true back then MIGHT be true now.

But yeah, I'll search to find the facts on my own. I do admit I'm a sony fan and I do play my ps3 way more than my 360.

HOWEVER, fan aside, I do like the whole story. Not just part of it. So yeah, I'll be hunting for more news on this.

While it could lose 'some' business for those 360 owners that currently refuse to buy a PS3, it would put the 360 and PS3 in more direct competition. Even if the add-on is $150 and you have someone who wants BR and games, cost of the 360 would be far more than the PS3 with less features. Even the arcade would be over $400 and the elite would be about $600 and we all know how well that price point works. A price cut would help, but even $50 off wouldn't make the 360 look better for those looking for HD movies and HD games.

In the contract Sony gets to set the price. So they sell them at $200+ a pop for the 360 owners who refuse to get a PS3 plus for new potential buyers who want BR as well as games, the PS3 would look FAR better price wise (about $500 for the arcade + BR...). Just a thought.

The thing is, this can work FOR OR AGAINST THEM

On the FOR side, even as an add on, this WILL drive the capabilities of the 360 to be on par with the ps3 costs up. This can make consumers gravitate towards the ps3 because it can do everything already whereas the 360 needs extra parts to do things. And for the most part, add ons don't sell well. And with the little sales that do come from it, MS would be getting sony a cut of the profit.

One the AGAINST side, this can make people say "hell, I already have a 360. So I can just buy this add on rather than shelling out for a full price ps3".

But my thing on this is that Microsoft was VERY VOCAL about digital downloads winning the MOMENT HD DVD died. They must not have as much confidence in their own words if they're in dicussion with blu ray.

The BR drive plays DVD's too, so you could have a new 360 with built-in BR and play your old copy of gears on it. You could also watch BR movies.

Its not fully here today, but will be tomorrow. It will be just like CD's amd MP3's. None thought tht music downloads would compete with CD's and those who thought that CD's were going to die out once MP# were in full effect. It will give people a coice; some will prefer physical media and other will want digital. Emulating a Cell Processor and RSX on the Xenon Processor? Not possible.

If you have played around with console emulators, you will know that an emulator requires a CPU that is at least 10x more powerful than the CPU you are trying to emulate.

I wouldn't count on anything being able to emulate the PS3 in real-time for quite some time. Same goes for the XBox 360. They are both VERY powerful machines that would require a huge amount of processing power to fully emulate.

While putting in blu-ray in a 360 might affect short-term sales, in the long run that is just extra revenue in Sony's pocket, which in turn helps them go black in that division which sold allow them to perform price-cuts faster. I totally agree with you. They'll probably charge $150-$200 for a Blu-Ray add on. You can bet that Sony has the manufacturing costs of the Blu-Ray drive in control and they'll continue to drop as the public buys more players. The margins on an add-on for Sony will be crazy...it'll be just a plastic box with a drive in it and a wire.

It's a very smart business move on Sony's part. The gaming division is just one revenue producer for them. I think Blu-Ray is a much bigger potential money maker for them than the gaming. You know that Sony gets a cut of every Blu-Ray movie sale no matter what studio produces it.

coz 360 game developers dont use hddvd disks for there games because not all xbox 360 owners have a hddvd player in there console, so developers hav 2 make all xbox 360 games on duel layer dvds, were as the ps3 came with a next gen format player as standard, so even if xbox got a blue ray player i dont think it will matter much,360 game developers will still use standard duel layer dvds not blue ray.

The 360 didn't have to drop its price because there was no real competition for almost 2 years. Was that good for the consumer? No, it wasn't. But competition has since arrived and the price is now dropping. Bluray is actively discouraging competition that would make their standard cheaper.

The term "NEXT-GEN" is the most missleading term in the industry. The term "generation" only lumps systems together because they're available at the same general time in terms of system life-cycles, its doesn't relate to product features or qualities what-so-ever.

They may both be "the current generation", but the PS3 and 360 are incomparable in terms of thier respective features because the PS3 is of vasatly superior quality, includes way more features, and with Bluray now the standard, the 360 an outdated format.

DVD's are still good enough, I bought my Xbox-360 for games which it does very well, the HD-DVD was a there if I wanted it, Bluray will likely soon be there if I want it, either has a add-on (probably) or in a new elite model or both, I can't believe some of the Xbox-360 owners who are moaning about this, you bought your console for games and it plays games (well), bluray or no bluray it will still play games

But this wouldn't bode well for the PS3 in that a sizable number of consumers are buying the PS3 as a blu-ray player. However, the PS3 still has a big spec advantage, which is HDMI 1.3.

A Blu-ray Add-on looks like something that could be agreed upon, as it wouldn't require any additional reworking of the 360 hardware. But Microsoft knows that add-ons don't sell well (3% adoption rate of HD-DVD drive) so they're obviously going to try and incorporate it directly into the system.

It would really hard to justify including blu-ray in the hardware though. 17 million 360 owners would be alienated and outdated, and Microsoft would have a hell of a time explaining to the media why they didn't just include Blu-ray for games in the first place.

Sony and Microsoft are not rivals… the box and the PS3 are a “part” of Microsoft and Sony. Sony would be CRAZY not to help Microsoft in every way, shape, and form to get a blu-ray add on, or even include one as the default drive on the box. I own all 3 systems, and the biggest downfall of the 360 is currently, its ONLY good for games (and I really don’t care for most of them, grow up ppl, and please get “smarter” a freaking monkey would also enjoy these FPS’s…) DVD = LOL ppl get in this century.

A friend of mine recently bought a Sony LCD and a 360. he had no idea what he was doing and called SONY for support. I couldn’t believe the amount of 360 advice they give him at Sony support. They told him how DVD’s and Games are upconvered all the way to 1080p on the 360, but he needs to use HDMI for example. Why? because he bought a SONY LCD! so all 360 fans who want to go HD may look to Sony for their needs, they cant bank on M$ for HDTV's...

If this comes true.

1. x360 price will obviously go up.

2. x360 games will still not benefit from blu ray storage.

3. MS will in effect validate Sony's inclusion of blu into the PS3.

MS will be seen by people as trying to catchup with Sony. A add on will not likely make people buy the x360 over the PS3 for blu ray so MS will not really be benefiting from the DVD-Blu migration if indeed this is their intention. Even if its in-built the PS3 will not only be priced similarly to this proposed new SKU but it also have alot of other features that the is not standard with the x360. PS3 games also benefits from blu storage unlike an in-built blu drive for x360. Last by not least the PS3 if far more reliable than the x360.

I highly doubt that this will happen.

if Microsoft allowed developers to create games on a potential Blu Ray add on for the 360, that's akin to them saying, "Sony was right about *EVERYTHING, you should have bought their system instead, it's *CHEAPER!"

if anything, Microsoft will keep the Blu Ray add on for movies only, and pimp DVD being enough for this gen until they decide to prematurely pull the plug on the 360 and release their *NEXT console, which will use Blu Ray as it's medium.

What are some of you people smoking? The xbox 360 will never, EVER have a sku with a built-in blu-ray drive. That is unthinkable. It could possibly have a blu-ray add on, but seriously doubt that that will even happen. The xbox "720" will almost certainly have a blu-ray drive, because dvds are simply too small for video games and that problem will only get worse in the future. But a built in blu-ray drive on a 360? I much prefer having a second drive anyway. One drive for games and one drive for movies. Much, much more convenient. On my 360, I watch a half dozen movies in the time it takes me to complete a single game. This is way more convenient and cuts down on disk swapping big time.

Even if MS agree a deal with Sony for Blu-Ray it has to be for a built in drive and NOT a stand-alone player since it will only profit Sony. MS need to be clever because since the launch of the 360 the masses have been torn because of the number of niggling issues with the 360 that are flying around the net and from the fact that they have too many decisions to make on which version to buy i.e. HDD drive or not. Yes they have a substantial lead on the hardware and especially the software, due to an EXTENSIVE library of excellent games, BUT they haven't taken that risky jump to becoming the leading manufacturer. I for one would like once and for all to see Sony usurped and MS can do this with some tactical thinking. Blu-Ray is a step towards that goal but it's not enough for the masses to follow i.e A HDD core with every console, Blu-Ray, Gigabit ethernet port etc.
It's time to stop annoying people and take control of the situation yes it will raise the cost of the console but for the long run and since MS have recorded profits for the first time it a move that i think is necessary to make.

I know it's not going to be as glorious as I want it to be, because logically they can't switch the game format to Blu-Ray when their entire current install-base is running the DVD based systems. Productions costs would be unnecessarily high to make it on on both Blu-Ray and DVD discs. So if this touches the 360 at all it will be just for movies, and probably an add-on.

I really do want to see it though just because I was 100% behind Sony deciding to use Blu-Ray on the PS3 and was also 100% behind the 600$ price tag when it started. All this means is, when it happens, the THOUSANDS of people, hundreds of which post on THIS site, will all be simultaneously made to look like imbeciles. Sony has a revenue of 76 billion dollars, but MS makes only 51 billion dollars. This is before expenses are taken out. MS has a net income of 14 BILLION dollars while SONY only makes 1 billion dollars. Sony spends approx 75 billion dollars in expenses while MS only spends 37 billion.

Why is this? Because Sony has to pay off a lot of companies royalty fees for the stuff it uses, including Microsoft. Heck, Sony doesn't even completely own Blu-ray. It has to split royalties with 8 other companies. MS on the other hand owns everything it outsources completely.

So yeah Sony fanboys. Sony isn't really pwning MS. Sony get's its wallet pwned. This Blu-ray thing isn't even going to be an issue for MS.

MS has more money left over BECAUSE THEIR CHEAP! They give out half assed products that break down when they come out and take forever to do something about it. Sony put all their money into reinvesting and making sure they output quality products.

Also about that blue ray split thing no they really dont split their royalties because they make what they sell. The other companies are entitled to the blue ray brand but when sony sells a blue ray player they dont split it by 8 companies it all goes to Sony. If it was MS it work in that favor though since they are not apart of the BDA they have to get a license to use it and the royalties on their players go to the BDA.

Suggestions for MS, should they choose to implement Blu-Ray in the 360:

--Either integrate BR into a new Elite model, or create a 360 "Ultimate" that has BR;

--Release a small peripheral drive (like the HD-DVD one) for those who want BR but don't want to buy a new system;

--And, give HD-DVD peripheral owners a coupon or the like towards a BR drive or new 360.
