Irish gaming website Next Gen Ireland cancels Xbox 360 coverage due to RRoD & poor service

Next Gen Ireland writes: It is my sad duty to let you know that as of today, February 21st 2008, Next Gen Ireland will be suspending all Xbox 360 coverage indefinitely.

Here at Next Gen Ireland offices there are currently three Xbox 360 consoles that are used to review games. Over the past week, each one of these consoles decided to give us the dreaded red rings of death in succession. Now we all know that Microsoft have decided to extend the warranty on consoles experiencing this issue, but from our dealings with Microsoft Ireland directly, it's not as simple as that.

Next Gen Ireland felt that we needed to take a stand as customers and not reviewers in this instance, and to be treated that way by Microsoft after they were at fault by releasing a console that was blatantly untested onto the mass market is unacceptable. In our opinion, the after sales service we received today was atrocious and we can't stand for it.

I think it is a ballsy thing to do, and applaud them for taking a stand. I sold my 360 shortly before the PS3 launch to help pay for a new lcd tv and PS3. I see cool games on all systems and want them all but refuse to buy a 360 myself till they fix all the problems. I work at the service desk for the local Wal-Mart in my college town and see too many dead 360's to count, and it's not just the RROD. I see many people having to bring back both games and systems as the optical lens has cut circular scratches into the game. Sometimes it can be chalked up to moving the console from vertical to horizontal (and the other way around) while playing and I always ask about that to the customers but more and more they say no that- they keep the console in one position, untouched. It just started making a terrible noise and they have to turn it off and the disc is scratched up after that.

I've seen a few yellow lighted (well honestly only one) 40gig PS3 and a few dead no power systems (again around two or three), and about the same amount of defective wiimotes (not the system itself), but nothing like the stream of 360's.

So I agree here. Microsoft if you want me personally back as a gamer it is going to take three things.
1. Working, fixed hardware
2. Built in wifi
3. honestly free online is number three but I can just ignore online portions of games if needed.

do the same...Im a 360 fan. I'm also on my third and by the way my latest machine has been acting soon to be 4th 360. I'm getting sick of being afraid everytim i start my system it will either A)fail B) scratch up whatever game is in its mouth at the time or C) get the disc read error, which then sets me back 45 minutes to my last save point. my ps3 has been getting more and more play lately. Ps3 is not without its faults though...the no upscaling from 720p to 1080i issues are still a thorn in my side.

The same thing could be said about the ps1 and ps2. Don't tell me you never had to turn your ps1 upside down for it to work. And the ps2 was cheap trash. I owned 4 ps2's in 3 years because of shoddy hardware. Guess what sony did everytime I had a ps2 start acting up? Not a damn thing, I had to buy a brand new console. The 360's hardware problems are frustrating yes, but MS is doing the right thing by consumers.

I agree with you...i went through plenty of ps2's in my day as well and finally gave up on them. Ps1 days of having to stand it up on its side to run etc...I atleast usually got 1+ years of running service before they would bite the dust. Not one of my 360's has made a year yet...I think the longest working machine I have had has been 10 months

I own all the current gen systems and can say without a doubt the software on the 360 is worth dealing with the hardware issues on the old systems. New falcon systems are fixed.

This is stayign safely in the Open Zone for me, but if your console hadn't been rushed otu faultily, it woudl ahve coem at aroudn the same time the PS3 did. And then the exclusives and everythgin woudl have been a totally different story. The reasons I even commented on this thread:

1. No one gives a sh!t about what nextgenireland.com covers as I doubt anyone outside of Ireland ever heard of them.
2. There is huge hardware problem with old systems however I personally feel the software makes it worth the hassle and its fixed in the new falcon systems.
3. Sony fanboys can't argue about games and can only lean on the RROD issue.
4. All three consoles (more PS3 and 360 than Wii) are a great value.
5. You can't post anything even close to negative to the PS3 on this site without getting buried in disagrees.

There are both PS3 and X360 fans that are over the top. I don't make tons of RROD replies to anything, check my responses to things (not saying you said I did but as a Sony fan I wanted say I don't do that). I even compliment the X360 at times. I personally don't like MS at all but I can admit that X360 has some things going for it and I prefer competition to be there as it makes the PS3 games I play better. its funny you mention that....I just got of the phone with MS support regarding my xbox I sent in a couple weeks ago. They said well its on its way.

Cool I thought.....I asked, "Sir do you think that there is anything that I can do to prevent this from happening again after all this is my third box repair."

I haven't been touching my 360 for awhile now. I don't know what it is, It's like most of the games they have don't appeal to me. I mean, I have Halo 3, Ghost recon, Project Gotham, and Forza. So I have a few decent games.

But on my ps3 I have assassin's creed, call of duty, uncharted, rachet and clank, Lair, Folklore, eye of judgment, and unreal tournament.

I've even considered selling my 360 on more than one occasion. I don't really now what it is or how to explain it, but I just enjoy sony's offerings more. I think they have more variety in their games. The 360 has alot of shooters. Whereas the ps3 has some shooters AND other genres. And even though 360 has other genres as well, they EMPHASIZE the shooter and western rpg type games.

Overall, my ps3 gets MUCH more play than my 360

I'm not standing up for the XBOX here, I'm saying that as journalists, limiting their coverage limits their reader base. You don't have to agree but don't construe my words to mean that I'm calling them wrong on their statements regarding the reliability of the xbox. If N4G cut out any console coverage, I'd stop reading them too. I like getting all angles of the story and info personally. They are suggesting they will no longer review games until the xbox is..fixed? Since there are thousands of other review sites out there, they are only diverting traffic they could retaining to other sites.

Futhermore they decline expedited repairs and the ability to get a loaner because they don't believe in "preferential treatment," but would rather wait, and sulk, and develop a bunch of hits they would otherwise not gotten by making a stink about an already well known and documented problem. The whole point of a review site is a preferential treatment of sorts. I prefer to read this site over any other gaming site because its all encompassing. They can no longer say that. Fact is, it is a POS as far as build quality is concerned. Every day i turn mine on, i fear it will be its last. And that is a crappy feeling.

That being said, it's the most fun i've ever had with a games console/media center. So, FWIW...

If it was reliable, honestly, the 360 would be my perfect system, but in its current form, it is flawed. not for its games or capabilities, but because of its build issues.

Hopefully they'll release a new updated unified GPU/CPU sku, and let all us folks with old systems (4/06 for me) update with some sort of trade-in/update program. It doesn't hurt to dream...

You'd be surprised how many people Use next-gen ireland in ireland. The ps3 is still the minority in my city and the people who use next-gen ireland would be looking up xbox news. I completely understand their frustration, however I feel that their approach as a business was very unprofessional. (Unless they are just a couple of highschool kids running a site from their mom's basement.)

How broke can they be not to be able to buy a new 360 and send the broken one in for repairs. If you are going to commit to doing something and your main tools are electronic, should you not have a back on hand. (And when I say back, I mean one that you bring out in times of crisis and then put it away when the crisis is over.

Additionally, when my xbox died, I was never asked to present a sales reciept. (So, I call BS on that part) Also, no 360 is three years old yet which means all RROD issues would be covered. (Another reason why a sales reciept is not needed) So, I think their's more to this story than meets the eye.

One last thing; They say they are not covering xbox 360 anymore, yet they solicit people to send them RROD stories. Is that not some form of coverage of the 360.

Its these kind of efforts that will force MS to fix the damn problem. I'm seeing too many 360 gamers having a blahze attitude about these issues. Defending the 360 and taking offence like people are talking about your Mother.

Truth is people are getting fed up with this $hit. 360 is a great machine when its working, the library is impressive and its not dead or dying like people proclaim. Its going to be around the duration of this generation.

It is for that reason that people should continue to have their voices heard in attempts to get the message to MS that this needs to be fixed and we're not going to just bendover and continue to get shafted just bc Bioshock is GOTY for your console. You cant play that GOTY with your console boxed up in a Tennesse MS repair center waiting to be fixed for the (insert # here)time since the 360 launch.

sequel.
