Why the Sega Saturn Needs to Be Represented on the Virtual Console

JMcEvoy2006 writes:

"While it won't make many lists for the greatest home consoles, the Sega Saturn holds a special place in gaming history. Though it was obliterated by the PlayStation, it was the second most successful console of the era and had some classic titles. As such, these titles need to be released on the VC."

Dreamcast games for PS3
Saturn games for Wii
Genesis games for 360

FreeMonk5312d ago

to play Panzar Dragoon Saga on any of the major 3 consoles.

I missed out on many Sega Saturn games, as at the time like many people, was playing on the PlayStation.

PD Saga, Guardian Heroes and Burning Rangers are the ones I'd love to play.

I would buy a Saturn and the games of Ebay, but although the console can go for around £10-£20, a copy of PD Saga could cost around £150-£200, with GH and BR around £80-£100. Way to much!

Dreamcast games for PS3

Genesis games for 360 "

Ahh the wii already has mega drive games on the VC.

Biphter5312d ago

But I think in reality the Wii is only technically capable of emulating Genesis. If they recoded Saturn and DC games they might work ok, but as VC (under emulation) I doubt it can happen. Saturn is actually MORE complicated to emulate than Dreamcast and needs a hefty PC to run games smoothly (SFF being the best emu out ATM). Both DC and Satrun could be emulated on Xbox 360 and PS3 I recon. Would be nice to see a Saturn collection similar to the recently released Genesis collection. HD and tropies/achievements, great stuff!!

I dont think Saturn on the Wii is gonna happen, Its just not up to the task. One the PS3/X360 it can happen.

I used to rent a Sega Saturn from my local Blockbuster, it was so exciting. Panzer Dragoon and Daytona USA.

Go with the Panzer Dragoon series, update their graphics, forget all else.

darthv725312d ago

Panzer dragoon orta is a nice looking game and fits well in line with the original.

execution175312d ago

How Street Fighter IV Saved 2D Fighting Games (Ft. Maximilian Dood)

After Street Fighter II released in in 1991, it caused a fighting game explosion, both in arcades and in home consoles. But, as the decade ended, and arcades were failing, so too were 2D Fighting games. This is how Street Fighter IV completely revitalized the genre.

I'd say Blazblue helped too. Didn't care for Street Fighter 4, but Blazblue was amazing during that time. Sad that the series kind of went downhill after the first 2 or 3 games though.

DarXyde314d ago

BlazBlue was phenomenal. Platinum'd Calamity Trigger because I loved it so much. I remember buying Continuum Shift back in the day at launch for like $40. They did have DLC characters (Valkenhayne, Makoto, and Platinum at the time) and it came out to just a tad more than it would at full price. Didn't mind at all.

Great fighting game.

Snookies12314d ago

Continuum Shift was definitely my favorite. Spent way too many hours on that game, haha... Had the counters for days with Hakumen.

DarXyde314d ago

I really like Makoto, Valkenhayne, and Hazama. Super fun characters

Terry_B313d ago

Valkenhayn ..just sayin'

Terry_B314d ago

BlazBlue was the much better, more technical game..and a real 2D Fighting Game after all. But yes, since it was a big name..the characters were still popular and the game itself was good, SFIV indeed helped a lot. However, I am pretty sure the much better-selling Mortal Kombat 9 would have been done without SFIV as well..and that one truly helped to make the fighting game genre in general more popular again.

Ryuha1234h314d ago

You’re sound dumb. Blazblue was not better than sf4. You’re just saying that because you’re a street fighter hater.

Redgrave314d ago

>calls someone dumb
>does it by saying "you're sound dumb"

Task failed successfully

Terry_B313d ago

A SF Hater eh? Fight me in SF 2,3 4 or 5 and you will regret that stupid comment ;)

gold_drake314d ago (Edited 314d ago )

eyyy max xD

one of the very few streamers i can actually watch without it being cringe and awful ha.

GhostScholar313d ago

The content of IV was severely lacking when it launched. It got better over time.

15 Sega Genesis Games that Hold Up Today

The Sega Genesis is a tad underappreciated. This site has already posted about how this console was great for the RPG genre despite the SNES getting more glory. However, that was not the only genre that flourished on the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Shining Force is on my long list of game series should be revived. Same with console Phantasy Star

Fonsecap873d ago

Shining Force 1, 2 and 3 were awesome, the third one can only be played with emulation along with the translation project because of Episode 2 and 3 that were only released in JP. But I agree, I don't know why SEGA don't revive this franchise, tactics games are very well accepted these days.

Jiub873d ago

I didn't know that about the third one. After the success of the last Fire Emblem, I can't imagine why we don't get more tactics RPGs out there. I'd even take a tactics ogre at this point

gold_drake872d ago

YES
i love shining force. i need a bundle with all the games in it.

but the mobile game is coming soon anyways :)

Petebloodyonion872d ago

I'm sorry but I feel the list has been made by a person checking his own backlog catalog.
Mortal Kombat 2? missing half of the sounds and animation from the arcade.
And can we say Super dark soul difficulty when we say Earthworm Jim 2

Here's my pick for still holding up and fun

- Shinobi Shadow Dancer, not too tough nor too easy with a good arcade challenge 1 hour long to complete.
- Gunstar Heroes
- Nhl 94
- Thunder Force 3

Shuckylad872d ago

The 16 bit era in general has aged better than any pre hd generation imo.

Fist4achin872d ago

Great lost with lots of memories. A reboot of the Shadowrun game and Shining Force would keep me entertained and busy for a long time.

gold_drake872d ago

-Soleil
-Sonic 2, 3 and knuckles, pinball
-that one x-men game i always forget its name
-that one fighting game that has different characters (a fishmen, an assassin lady, a private detective from the 70s etc)
-shining force 2
-dynamite heady (probably the best looking genesis game, imo)
-wonderboy in monster world

those are the ones that come to mind ha.

Yui_Suzumiya872d ago

Sega CD version is so much better though.. I had both versions back in the 90's

gold_drake871d ago

oh yeh, thats the name. i always forget it haha.
