Where did Warhammer Online Go Wrong?

Less than a year ago, Warhammer Online was one of the hottest games on the market. With over 1.4 million sales in the first few months, it looked like it could be a serious competitor to World of Warcraft.

Now, after the closing of over 60 servers, Warhammer limps along with 100 to 200 thousand subscribers (at best). The 6 remaining servers are near ghost towns, with more players (and entire guilds) quitting regularly.

Inability to handle large battles, massive class and server population imbalance, and weak end game RvR/PvP are three of the primary reasons the game is failing. This article looks at those reasons and more in great detail.

The sad story of Warhammer Online's fall from grace is an interesting and insightful read.

Great article with an excellent summary of how Warhammer went wrong.

It immediately raises the question: how much longer does Warhammer have? 3 months? 6?

I don't see how Warhammer can last another year. The forums already have rumors of ANOTHER server merge coming.

What a shame. :(

In the next patch, forts are being removed and the emphasis is being put on the 48 on 48 city sieges and the farming of warlord/sovereign gear.

There are some CC fixes that look potentially encouraging, but that's about it.

Are you serious? No more forts? Forts were pretty much the only large scale warfare left in the game.

What are they thinking?

How long until this game goes tango uniform?

3 months? 6?

I am taking < 6.

Muckbeast5317d ago

I am going with less than 12. I think they will hold on for about 4-8 months, then announce they are closing 2-3 months after that.

I was so stoked for this game, but was left so unimpressed by the open beta that I never ended up buying it. Apparently others felt the same.

I agree when it comes to The Sims Online. That game was really fun and nothing has even come close to it. I still crave a new Sims with online multiplayer. Blows my mind they haven't done anything like that since The Sims Online or even The Sims Bustin' Out on PS2.

Five Ambitious MMOs That Never Took Off

Kevin from Denkiphile: "The first I’d ever heard of Titan was at the height of my World of Warcraft career, which was also the same time that several games, touted as WoW-killers, came onto the market and failed miserably. It made sense to me at the time that the only thing that could kill WoW was Blizzard themselves, but this also eventually changed with the advent of session-based, microtransaction-supported games like League of Legends. Titan was supposed to revolutionize and revitalize the MMO genre, but it certainly was not the first to crash and burn before its first flight. Here are some MMOs whose ambitions flew them too close to the sun."

12 Dead Online Video Games That Should Never Have Ended

The closing of multiplayer services can happen for a number of reasons. Sometimes there just aren’t enough people using a product to justify keeping it running while in others it could be down to complicated legal wrangling, like expiring licensing agreements, or even a desire to bring out a new installment.

One thing is clear though – many of these discontinued games simply don’t deserve to die, to be cut down in their prime leaving players without a viable alternative and waste all that time the audience invested in them. With that in mind, this article will count down the 12 games least deserving of being shut down, the ones that players the world over wished had kept going.
