Microsoft is now Sony and Sony is now Nintendo

Every generation we see interesting twists and turns to the main competitors. We've seen Sega fail and bailout during the Dreamcast lifecycle, while Microsoft came into the picture as the next contender for the home console title. Sony and Nintendo have studied each other over the years and formed patterns to combat against each other. Nintendo relied strongly on superior first-party offerings, while Sony created strong third-party relationships and offered a wide variety of exclusive titles. A change of strategy is now being made.

Maybe when it comes to the sheer amount of piracy that the console attracts. Google XBOX 360 mods and see what comes up. I think that's the only real mantle they've stolen from sony, and that sony has taken from nintendo.

M$ will be Sony when they master the process of manufacturing. They are still all about software, don't get it twisted. I love my 360 too, but after getting the red rings once and having to pay out of pocket to get it fixed, I have no faith in them.

You still need both systems to get a full gaming experience this gen, so I won't complain. Sony WAS getting a bit too big for their britches, and the competition has put them off balance and made them compete instead of sitting on their laurels.

Sony DID, however, make a SOLID piece of hardware this time.

edit: my basis is on the two major competitors of then and now. Nintendo is in a league of their own much like NEC was in the day. People knew they were there but the focus of attention from the hardcore was all on two companies and their respected systems. Slinging mud at each other was in then too.

Sony wasn't a distant second either from any of the competition for 3-4 years. Sony killed all the competition including Microsoft, and had an extraordinary lineup. Not getting a map pack a week earlier. Sony/others introduced new technology to gaming(hi DVD), not obsolute tech,(Hi DVD). MS isn't pioneering anything in gaming, as Sony is/did. I mean they did pioneer going backwards in hardware quality, thats something Microsoft can chalk up for themselves. Hell almost every new IP sony debuted made is now a "stolen exclusive" as edge & kotaku puts it, for the 360. And this gen, there are still more new IP's for the 720 to steal next time.

Microsoft will never be what sony IS due to their focus on dollars more than quality gaming, focus on timed exclusives rather than making a name for themselves and stable hardware. They started a year early, with faulty hardware, and are still a distant second behind the Wii. The only thing MS currently has going for itself, is the price and a year head start.

MS isn't going away, but it doesn't mean anything significant. Just like the Zune or Internet Explorer, they are here to compete. Not to win. Their competing has been nothing but "yeah us too!", case in point? Motion controls. Everything that MS & The audience/following has dubbed as a gimmick is now the second coming. Couple that with a year head start, and you have the Microsoft me-too campaign - with ads now with audio on xbl!

The gaming world would be stupid to pat MS on the back for their dishonest marketing tactics, advertising multiplatforms as exclusive, charging for free online play, charging dumb amounts for all the power-ranger-add on's, How much is a 400 gig HDD again, for all those lovely installs?(Yeah me too!). MS is a child with a checkbook. But no checks make the quality of the games any better, thats all spent on advertising so they can make the sequel with new textures and nothing else faster.

Microsofts future in gaming is dependent upon Sony deciding to drop the price, not really a market leader.

The 360 isn't ahead in the "EU", just the UK. and yes, its dead in japan, france, germany, and where-ever else tracks. The PS2/PS1 wasn't completely DEAD in regions Chance. This article seems to be referring to software support more so than console sales. In that respect his article is miss leading because Sony is not like Nintendo (Nintendo still not getting a lot of good third party games) was last gen and is pretty much equal with Microsoft as far as third party software support goes and is superior to Microsoft with there first party software. The only third party games that anyone cares about that is exclusive to Microsoft for the time being is the new Splinter Cell game and Left 4 Dead 2 which I'm sure will make there way to the PS3 eventually as has most of Microsoft's timed exclusive's. PS3 has a few third party exclusive's too, Demon Soul being one of them. PS3 is still the only console you can get MGS4 on.

All in all the PS3 has many Great games available now and coming in the future, in My opinion more than either Microsoft or Nintendo (Many more than Nintendo).

The wii is a console, and has been until it beat the hell out of Sony & Microsoft, after it skyrocketed past all consoles, its now isolated. Yet microsoft is yeah-me-tooing its best feature, Motion controls, and most of the 360 games run in sub-hd upscaled to 720/1080p. HD gaming is fluff, you know this, and I know this. The term HD-Gaming has nothing to do with your "BUH BUH SALLLESSS!" arguments. Sony's money from the PS3 doesn't go to the HD-Gaming Bank, neither does Microsofts. Its an excuse used to deny the success of the wii, and the fact that if the Wii can be so far ahead of the 360/ps3 voids any of your lame place logic. And as far as sales go again, the PS2/PS1 wasn't "close" in regions and dead in places like Japan. Its lucky to be around right now and is relying on Sony not cutting the price of their console.

Sony enjoyed their console being #1, PERIOD. Not "buh buh in this specific category of consoles!!!" The 360 will never be the #1 gaming console, and neither will the Ps3, thanks to the success of the Wii, but Sony is in a better position historically than Microsoft is. They've competed with Nintendo before and destroyed them. MS has yet to survive any generation.

Even with the Xbox 360 having sold about 2 million more consoles than PS3 in Europe (that mostly being in the UK) The PS3 still has more software sales than the Xbox 360 in Europe for the most part.

Not saying that Xbox 360 consoles are not ahead of PS3 but a good many of those are replacements counted as new sales. With the Xbox 360 high failure rate and the amount being replaced through retail warranty and the people buying new Xbox 360 to replace old one's hoping that the newer models are less prone to get the RROD failure, there is no accurate way to know how many Xbox 360 have been sold anywhere in the world.

Microsoft's sales numbers are sales to retail not to consumers. Retailers replace faulty consoles with new ones through retail (replacing a broken console with a new console does not create a new consumer, still counts as one consumer) and then orders new stock to replace the consoles they have given out as replacements (By all accounts the Xbox 360 still has a higher than normal failure rate). So that basically is padding Microsoft's sales to retail numbers.

Not saying that Microsoft doesn't have a lead over the PS3, just saying its very possible that the lead is not as high as they would have consumers believe.

Nintendo has always been with their 1st party games.

Sony use to let 3rd parties make almost all their exclusives and they work hard to have good relationship with them. However now that 3rd parties are no long willing to make exclusives (beside a few) Sony is building great 1st party support.

Ms has use it year head start and higher install base (thanks to it low price) to build up 3rd party support that they didnt have last gen. They use XBL to build a large community to drive software sales

I dont see why fanboy of any system would be up set by any that. No matter what system/company you are a fan of they are all doin their best to make great games (to get your money)

The PS3 is the most popular because everyone wants one. Its sales have been attributed to its price and EVERYONE knows that, if this wasn't true then why is it that there are more PS3 related topics then any other in gaming news? More to that, why do we get a unique artile almost daily about a PS3 price drop in some form? Sony needs to... Sony has to... Sonys going to... Price cut imminent... PS3 price cut this... and so on and so forth.

It all SCREAMS to me that people want PS3s so I'd say it IS the most popular.
The 360 is as low as $200 and STILL not completing with the wii
The 360 came out a year earlier and is ONLY 7-8mil ahead of the PS3 (as far as we know)
The 360s sales stagnated for 6 months before M$ dropped the $200 arcade model
The PS3 has been selling at a faster rate (lifetime) at a higher price

If the PS3 was $200 or even $250 it would be selling at wii-like rates but the 360 can't and isn't coming close despite actually having a console out that cost LESS than the wii.

I'm not saying the 360 is going to die but it is completely within the realm of possibility that the PS3 will catch up to it in the next year or two if it becomes competitively priced.

No one's begging the 360 to do something more for them to buy one so they are selling at the speed they're going to be selling at for a long time to come. The Ps3 on the other hand doesn't meet a criteria that some people are willing to buy one for so once that criteria IS met its sales will increase dramatically.

Someone PLEASE argue my points. I would love for someone to makes sense of how the 360 is more popular because it's sold more currently.

Also, you should know, that PS3 already surpassed total GameCube sales, which after 2 years cost 99$.

Microsoft is nothing like Sony --from the way they do business to the success of their consoles. Until Microsoft wins two console generations by a HUGE margin like Sony has, it is absurd to claim that they are the new Sony.

The PS2 has sold more than three times as many units as the Xbox and Gamecube. The Xbox 360 is barely outselling the PS3 and is far, far behind the Wii. So how again is it anything like Sony?

Not a very accurate parallel. Sony secured all the major releases for their consoles because they made up 75% of the industry at those times. Nintendo in the 64 days lost a lot of support early on because the PS1 offered more storage space for better games... Metal Gear Solid 1 and Final Fantasy VII, being prime examples. This new technology prospect was the key in Sony locking up a lot of developer support in the days they were unknown. Hmm. Reminds me of a certain console out now...

Microsoft also isn't securing exclusives when they end up on the PS3 six months later with better graphics and more content. Thanks for beta testing though. ^_^

If Sony became Dreamcast, then who become Sony? Simple: Microsoft. Microsoft took advantage of their one year lead and built a strong online community via Xbox Live and hooked every third-party developer they could. Whether it was by paying for exclusives or just landing them, Microsoft captured every development team they needed for success. Any major multiplatform third-party title released this generation was developed on the Xbox 360 first – minus Final Fantasy XIII. Sony has had to get the hand-me-downs and these titles often felt incomplete or didn’t run properly on the hardware. Microsoft created an easy to use architecture for the Xbox 360 and it allows developers an easier time for development, while many have claimed the PS3 is too difficult to develop for. This sounds a lot like the PlayStation vs Nintendo 64 days. The CD format was much easier to use and offered more space compared to the massive N64 cart.

The architecture of the PS3 its pure garbage, and third party knows this.

PS3 should apply for Chapter 11 and start to develop for what they are good at (nothing).

Sony got where they are at largely by 'creating', while Microsoft have got where they are at largely by 'destroying'. Case in point, Microsoft are damaging the PC gaming market just so they can take games to help them win the console war. And before anybody says "oh, all companies are the same" I'll just say bullshit, all companies do not approach business in the same way. I feel better about supporting the PS3 partially because I like Sony's approach to business better.

I own both systems and I can tell you PS3 exclusives like Uncharted and Killzone 2 have great anti-aliasing. Now look at games like Halo 3, which is probably the 360's most important game, and it has lots of jaggies. My point is, both consoles have games with good anti-aliasing and games with poor anti-aliasing. It is really up to the developers and what they are trying to acheive and the tradeoffs that they make to get there.

So, you were wrong about Halo, and you are completely wrong about Resistance as well. I own both Resistance games and I have always been impressed with how smooth edges are in the games. It turns out both Resistances DO have anti-aliasing.

MS did rush the 360 to market, and hopefully they learned from it...I believe they have, since it cost them a lot of money. Sony had a class action lawsuit against it because of faulty PS2 hardware...every company makes mistakes.

Whether anyone likes it or not, MS is now a powerhouse in the game industry, and they're here to stay for awhile.

Critics said the same about Sega and the genesis. Their first system was considered a flop even though it was technically superior to the NES. Nintendo just happened to have a way (and binding contractual agreements) with the third parties to ensure they had a crap load of titles.

Sega brought out the genesis and made people really take notice in what it had to offer for the time. Like Ms and the original xbox, they knew they couldnt beat sony even with superior hardware. Releasing the 360 at the time they did was pure strategy (like genesis) and has paid off so far. I am not saying 360 will remain dominant over ps3 but it is sure becoming far more popular than the first.

In the end between genesis and snes it was snes that eventually won out (debatable) with sega trying to cover so many fronts at once. Try supporting 5 formats at the same time and see how good it goes.

You can criticise MS all you want but they are only on their second system and it is already more popular than the first. That is a win for them no matter how you look at it.

Must be the case, since the latest numbers show the 360 still increasing from june 08 to june 09 and the PS3 still DECREASING in sales. This generation isn't Sonys generation, it won't be. One Game tops the popularity and sales of ANY Xbox franchise... It goes by the name GT... The demo itself sold 4 million... The franchise itself has sold more than Halo, Gears and Fora series combined (50 million GT sold till date).... Just wait for GT5 to land later this year or earlier next... GT5:Prologue sold 4 million and nearly outsold Forza... A full fledged game at a time when PS3's fanbase wasn't even 18 million.... By the time GT5 kicks in, trust me the game will break many records...

Oh ya and MGS4 has nearly sold 5 million... Gears is above obviously since there are 7 million more 360 owners out there due to a years head start, but only a fool can say that Gears is more popular than MGS4....

If you really wanted to try and compare god of war series to halo series it makes a fair assessment. Granted these are two totally different genres but there are some parallels. Both games had their 1st and 2nd releases within the same generation of the respected console.

Looking at sales to try and fathom popularity there is an interesting twist. God of war 1 was new and fresh IP and sold a nice 3.2+/- million copies to an install base of 100+ million (just a rough estimate based on overall sales). God of war 2 continues the adventures but goes on to only sell 2.5+/- million to the same install base. There was a decline of just less than a million units. The second game was arguably better in the series and sets up for the 3rd and (final?) game to be released to an install base of 20+/- million ps3 gamers. Again that is a rough estimate but you get the point. Overall, god of war series is nowhere near as popular as something like GT or even the final fantasy games but someone chose that game as a focul point in this discussion.

On to halo. Halo 1 was new in the sense that it was on a new system but not a new type of game. Not so fresh but still revolutionary in the exicution and delivery of FPS ona home console where the PC dominate that genre. It sells 6.4+/- million to an install base of 20+/- million (rough estimate). Quite a percentage of the install base if you ask me. Halo 2 comes out and surpasses it to sell 8.4+/- million to roughly the same size base. Here we have a sequel that beat the original (which rarely happens even in the movies) and was (just like GoW) a continuation of the story leading to part 3 on the 360. To look at the 360 you have halo 3 selling 8.8+/- million to an install base of 30+/- million.

The funny thing about this comparison is that for halo series it has been an increase every time. So that basically means that from the first you had gained new players as well as the original install base. Same trend happened for halo 3 (not sure about ODST or Reach yet).

I will throw a nod to Ultimalou (sp?) for stating the same thing each time (almost) that sales dont equal quality. true but it does show popularity. Both series are popular in their respected platforms and I for one am getting god of war 3 when it comes out because I like the series. I am also getting ODST and Reach when they come out for the same reason.

GT has a strange sales curve. The first sold better than the second and then the third sold better than the first with the fourth selling better than the second but still not as good as the first or third. The fifth will sell but it remains to be seen if it will surpass the sales of the third (under 15 million). We will just have to wait and see.

One more thing (I know...long read). Some will want to blame marketing for halo but you have to really ask yourself, why blame marketing for the success of something? I can see where marketing (or lack of) would be to blame for the decline. Never for the success.

All GT have been console seller.. Trust me Europe goes nuts when GT comes out... The hype can even rival Halo's even without a single AD published...

We can go all day with this, but it all comes to one thing... Sales don't define quality of a game. I am absolutely NOT saying that Halo sales are unjustified, but if you say Halo>games like Bioshock/Killzone 2.. only by looking at sales, then seriously stop such a practice.

GOW3 will never sell Halo numbers, but will it stop it from being next years GOTY.... Even Gods can't stop Kratos leave alone the 360 or Wii....

I know they are different genres. That is why that point was part of my lead off. Also, on the "transition phase"...I really hope you arent trying to use that as an excuse. If blame NEEDS to be assigned (which people love to do) then it has to be put on the fans. Much of the current turnout for games can be blamed on the fans and the lack of interest (or loyality) in the games being released. There are some great titles but many are to reluctant to try new things.

Which is why I really like the demo system on live more than psn. If I can try the demo then it helps ME decide. I tried infamous and it didnt interest me. Great to those who love it but it isnt for me. I do like the fact I was able to try it first. I think more effort should be paid to making demos available on psn. I think it would entice people to buy more software after at least giving things a try.

We know (or we think we do) what sony charges for content to be available by the developers/publishers. Maybe they charge them so they dont have to charge us. Flip side is live and the yearly fee but access to all sorts of game trials the publishers are wanting to offer.

People want to complain about live fees when I complain about lack of trial software on psn. More demos will only lead to more sales, retail as well as dlc.

I never tried to create an excuse for GOW3... Just get a perspective here ok... Halo is meant for kids to adult whereas GOW are always mature titles targeted at only mature audience... And besides, FPSes have always had a firm grasp over the crowd unlike hack and slash games like GOW, DMC... And finally as I said, Halo outsells any FPSes like GT outsells any Car/Sim game. GOW will probably be the best selling and top rated hack and slash game of this gen.... All are winners in their particular criteria.

Besides, I really don't understand the demo point... I mean all multi plats demo are released simultaneously on both networks... Even the PS3 exclusives have demos released before the game... Eg: Killzone 2 and Infamous... I even own a 360 and all the recent multi-plat demos are released simultaneously... like RFG for example... Games like Prototype which have no demo usually piss me off since I bought Prototype and was unhappy.... A demo would have made things much simpler, but PT was a piece of garbage worth 60$ for me....

As I said, sales don't mean sh*t this gen.. Yes if a game passes 2 million, a sequel is inevitable, but still people this gen will sway with ads and hype.... Infamous was nearly 10 times better than Prototype, but people loved prototype footage and so Infamous didn't get sales it deserved.. It IS interesting that Sony is now taking this approach, while Nintendo gets ragged on endlessly for the best titles on their consoles being Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Super Smash Bros, Kart, Punch Out, etc. (maybe Star Fox or Kid Icarus coming back now, too).

...can't argue with the results, really. Nintendo kept getting by with a devoted base that loves those games. Sony crippled nintendo 3rd party support by developing a cheaper medium to sell games on. The n64 era required developers to pay nintendo for each cartridge sold, while sony used cheap CD's. The primary reason that sqauresoft jumped the nintendo ship was due to the fact they could use CD's.

MS is doing the same thing by providing a cheaper platform to develop on, appealing to 3rd party developers to support the console, just like sony did against the n64.

But if we're talking about the number of CURRENT gen systems being sold, then no, NPD isn't getting paid off to put Sony in last place. The fact is, the PS3's total sales aren't greater than its competitors.

so microsoft will of course continue to sell, but that will not matter as most 360 and wii owners and majority of people who are still waiting for the price cut will move on to ps3.

So. It will take (with the current sales for YoY) 28.69 months for the PS3 to catch up to the 360's sales IF the 360 stopped selling for the next 28.69 months. Math is fun.

Now IF a price cut (which will be around $50)came out this month, then there surely there would be an increase in sales for the PS3, however instead of 28.69 months to catch up to the 360...it would then be around 20 months. Again Assuming that the 360 sells 0 consoles in the 20 months. GOOD LUCK.

Check the NPD numbers... PS3 was at 22.91 million in March.... In 4 months time, obviously add another million (or more) to a tally... That brings your blown up figure of 8 million to 7 million.... Yup, So the 360 is ahead of the PS3 by 7 million after a years head start and being at half the price... That deserves a standing ovation!!!! (*Claps and Laughs*).

Last year PS3 consistently outsold the 360 till September and M$ slashed the 360's price... PS3 covered that 10 million gap which was there before to 5 million till September..... In short, a price cut is what helped the 360 win last year and cover nearly 3-4 million ground back...

How people have such short memories let's refresh shall we:

1. Sony has had TWO generations with heavy equipment failure: PS1/PS2 and then charged you to get them fixed and guess what Sony got sued for hardware failures too. Apparently they got it right this time, although I wouldn't know since my Blu-Ray died a month after I bought my PS3, luckily I bought the store warranty and exchange the system within 30 days. Sony got me for $300 last genration in repairs and I absolultely refuse to give them anymore money for repairs EVER. Now my launch 360 did die after a year, but they fixed it for FREE (see Sony fanboys love the word. And I love how Microsoft doesn't contribute anything to gaming: XBL which Sony has copied (and not suceesfully-Free does not equate better) and hard drives in consoles (which if it didn't Sony would make you guys still buy memory cards and you would love it, because you guys had every excuse in the world last generation, when it came to memory cards vs. HDD), and new franchises just like Sony.

2. Let's talk about these brides every Sony fanboy loves to talk about. Sony was sued TWICE for FAKE positive reviews of their movies and paying radio stations to play their songs (which they still do I might add) And let's not forget about those exploding computer batteries, and it's well know the money hat Sony gave Rockstar last generation for GTA exclusivity which they eventually lost, because they felt developers should ENTITLED to produce games for Sony's platform. And how they paid EA and other developers to keep games off of the Dreamcast which caused it's demise, but NOW they don't pay for exclusives, yeah right. You guys are just mad because Sony can't outspend Microsoft like they did with Sega.

3. Sony fanboys act as if Sony is not a business and they don't care about money, well guess what they do that's what they are a business, they are not your friends. Sony's business practices are well documented just as Microsoft's so that agrument is freekin moot.

Granted the PS3 is a great machine, but so is the 360 and as records go Microsoft has a better record of reliabilty to use fanboy logic with two generations: 1 with console failures and 1 without, but Sony has three geenrations: 2 with heavy hardware failures and one without.

Let's see MS is nowhere near to being like Sony, they do not rush their products just to get head start lead they will release at the same time while supporting their other platforms unlike the raped child xbox which was a good and stable console that could've been against the ps2. Nintendo is outselling the ps3 and the wii since it's release. The cheaper price along with a few games that are quite good but still it's just selling to the casual market instead more of the hardcore. To declare the 360 or the ps3 the winner would be ignorance at it's best.

Sony released a year after and with a high price too just like the ps2. No good games were available at that time except Resistance fall of man, Genji, RIDGE RACER 7, Vegas, Fight night round 3, and then soon after good games started to roll in. History repeats itself actually, sony didn't have good games or much of anything that would justify a launch buy for most people who've had their sony consoles before. 3 years later they have some of the best exclusives to date, visual graphics beyond what has been seen on a console while only 8 million units behind the 360 with the same price tag. The ps3 has been selling faster than the xbox 360 since it's release, each year proves how much each console has sold and we all know for the 360 to even match the ps3 sales they have to sell it twice. They are offering a lot for their console at a decent price range with less failure percentage rate and first-2nd party support. They aren't going to beg for exclusives or hand out money they will make them.

XBox 360 has some good games as well, secured exclusives with it's early entrance basically dominating the first portion of the next gen. Have some of the best games to offer on the platform and continue to bring more support to that console. 3rd party developers have blessed that system with some DLC support and offering something more than the the other platform might not have. PS3 and pc platforms will most likely not get what the 360 is getting, if it does it was a timed exclusive which is worthless IMO. Other than the fact they have a high failure rate and paying to access online to play online isn't a good idea. They tried this with the pc crowd and they literally made it free for them. PC and ps3 gamers a like know the difference between quality online services. Steam is one of the reasons why you can play your games for free online without the BS. No ads, dedicated servers and just a whole mess of goodness. PSN has dedicated servers for most of it's 1st party and a few 3rd party games. Offering about the same if not better experience than the 360, but wait there's more!!! Fanboys will use excuses like they don't have mics which is a complete and total lie and other features that the other console has but not on ps3. Not every stupid waste of a space feature belongs on a console, do I really need voice messages or cross game chat since I barely use those on the other platform if not at all? Does it really matter if I have to pay for a service that is basically inferior to the free ones the pc gamers have been enjoying for years and years to come?

The PS3 can clearly do what it's competitors simple can not. That doesn't mean it's the best, it means that it has extra functions. Xbox answer is to buy extra game content through Xbox Live, Nintendo will make both their game system and games cheaper, and Arati & Sega will continue to make money by developing games. I all for unique gaming experiences, so 1 system to rule them all is not a good idea. (We all like different things, which is why it's good for Nintendo to do their thing.) Kids can't play Halo (At least that not I experience online.) so, Mario and Metroid and get their parent's cheddar. Sony make excellent platformers and adventure games, for the entire family and Xbox is king of shooters.

I can sit her and say that Gears 2 is the 3 best shooter of all time because of it's incredible sales. However, that game was no were near the level of Call of duty 4: Modern Warfare!!! All these price articles that are coming out are just potraying the ps3 as the better expensive console. Now in retail, consumers usually associate an expensive product as being the best , or top of the line, when you ask a sales associate to show you their best model they'll usually show you the most expensive one, and the customer notices . Now this type of "marketing"(intentio nal ps3 price bashing?) is planting a seed. Once they price drop the ps3, even if its still expensive when compared to other consoles(Wii 360), the consumer will see this as a great deal,that is just how we are in america, "oh man i got it for cheap", they think of it as owning a 600-or 400 dollar console during a recession. Sony has alot of games that appeal to all sorts of gamers, aswell as the bluray player. It keeps attracting people besides gamers because of the bluray. For some one who's buying a bluray player, why buy one for nearly the same price of a ps3(during pricedrop, even now!), because when you get the ps3 you also get a gamesystem and media player. I say, and you can quote me on this, when sony drops the price this holiday season, the ps3 will be the best selling system. I dont see them dropping the price any later than 2010(around sep-oct to give people a chance to save since credit is hard to get)with GT5 bundle(wounder why sony's marketing sucks?,they're saving their efforts and money for this franchise, it's too risky to go ad commercial crazy without the ideal install base),and the us economy isn't getting better, by waiting till 2010 they'll just loose sales since people wont have the $$$. Samething happened to the dreamcast(im NOT comparing it to 360!), it was the first 128bit console out with great games, and the only one people could afford @ 200bucks. Microsoft took its beating the first generation. Sony laughed at him for having the nerve and audacity to compete with the champion. The kid knew it was bested, but he licked his wounds and trained harder. He came back a man, a muscled machine, and showed the old-timer he deserved to be the champion.

A bigger better gaming library. The ps3 is a good machine but not at the level of the 360. It's no surprise that gamers around the world are choosing the 360 as their console of choice. The evidence is all there. Looks at the software sales like Infamous or Killzone 2. Disappointing to say the least. Killzone 2 was hoping to reach Halo 3 numbers but like most, failed miserably. Microsoft gets to be Sony when they've had two industry dominating consoles in a row. So far they haven't had even one in a row. The 360 is in THIRD place, not second. The Wii and PS2 are both ahead of the 360 and PS3. This is quite off base.MS are nowhere near last 2 gen Sony.Sony was a juggernaut of success and massively profitable.MS are not yet anywhere near turning a profit in games.People complaining PS3 is too expensive don't seem to realise that 360 is underpriced.Do you think 360 would be so cheap if PS3 hadn't been outselling it.MS can afford it not because it's a normal business move.If they were less cash rich,it wouldn't have happened.Problem is,competing with MS is almost impossible because they don't need to run as business.They can run as a slush fund for anything they want to do.MS also don't really innovate much or lead,unlike Sony.The only way they have lead is online,although the PC really led that.
Sony are not pre Wii Nintendo because they have outsold the Gamecube in half it's time on the market and still have 3rd party success.
There's no question that Ps3 will pass N64 in the next year too.Nintendo were a lot further behind last gen than Sony this.

Last i checked microsoft is in secound, making it nintendo as sony Has dominated console gaming for 15 years, and last gen there was a HUGE gap between sony and anyone else, ESPECIALLY the origional xbox, now there is only a couple of million seperating the ps3 and xbox despite its one year head start,and the wii's price accounts for its numbers.
