Fanboys Are Ruining Our Gaming Sites

Richard Windsor of Aeropause decided to write an article discussing how fanboy media is really starting to infiltrate more of the quality gaming sites on the web, including N4G.com.

I love the picture.

He's right, to some extent, though I think he over-focuses on Sony fans. It's more of a problem with N4G in general - the Gamer Zone isn't QUITE patrolled enough for blatant fanboy posts (though it's still much better than before the divide).

But worse, is that there's nothing stopping fanboys from doing one of two things:

1) Mass-approving articles that praise a certain console yet are little more than rehashes of previous articles
2) Mass-reporting articles that might actually be valid yet are somehow anti-their console of choice

Though really, without diving the entire site into a "Gamer Site" and "Open Site", I'm not sure what else can be done. Being a *community* news site, it sort of goes without saying that you'll see *all* sides of the gaming community. And some sides of it are pretty ugly.

Probably close to two years. I've seen the site be dominated by 360 fanboys and turn into mostly PS3 fanboys. Both act like morons and point fingers at the other as an excuse for their own childish behavior.

You're right though. It is user based and because of that will be supseptible to such things. Splitting the commenting sections into zones does help too.

probably a combination of both. Good news has brought out the worst PS3 fans. Some of them have felt the need to inact revenge I guess. It has been wierd to watch the site go from one group to another. None of it's good though. I don't mind people who support their system, lord knows I support mine. I just wish people would do it with some tact and class.

I know sometime trolls get the best of me. One thing that helped me, is I just set the system to ignore people with 3 or less bubbles. lol

But serious. i don't think the fanboys have left as majority of them who used to bash ps3 last yr are still here. The mart is still here havnt seen Nasim in AGES lol. (Remember how sony defense force was revealed to be run by wii60 haha classic. Good times last yr). Bottom line because of the lack of positive 360 news and more importantly the lack of negative ps3 news the 360 fanboys are simply no longer as vocal as they used to be. You still see power of green trolling +ve ps3 posts but that has been greatly reduced. Hardly see the mart in ps3 posts anymore. On the other hand the ps3 owners who were here last yr had bad news rubbed in their faces by 360 fanboys. It was terrible. I had a 360 and a ps3 and i was oh so close to selling my ps3 because of it. They psychological effects are astounding. Really everywhere i went there was a 360 fanboy making me feel like i had just wasted 800 dollars(PS3+hdmi+game+extra controller). So ps3 fanboys really shouldn't feel bad in the society we live in its an eye for an eye. So we ps3 owners are going to get ours and be rubbing it in 360 faces all yr lol. Better luck next yr though

This guy sounds like a child to me.. In anything that humans discuss, sports, cars, dating, food preferences anything has its share of people that act completely stupid.. But the fact that he calls out sony fanboys whenever all of last year this entire site was anti ps3 pro 360 shows his bias. People rant and rave about fanboys and even write articles about the subject (obviously), but without fanboys most of these sites wouldn't be enjoying the bountiful harvest, nor (especially N4G) benefit immensely from the driving of hit counters, ad hits, and digg traffic, etc.. to their sites.

I've been reading N4G for a couple months now, and the first thing I thought of was how many PS3 fanboys infect this website, and how biased the "news" (rumours, opinions) articles are. Reading this most recent article was like a breath of fresh air because it's so true. "I used to really like this site, but recently it has been taken over by Sony fanboys, who are as mature as the cast of Jackass in a bra factory".

And don't say that last year the xbots were bashing the PS3 so now you are returning the favor. Last year the PS3 was a complete joke, so don't be mad when people speak the truth. Is is no different when a sports fanatics talk about their teams. That's all it is. Now one thing I don't like how gamers do it. For example I don't like to see sony fanboys on a pro 360 site or 360 fanboys on a pr ps3 site. The only reason your their is to troll and start flames. Do you think that MS, Sony, and Nintendo really care about your irrational posts regarding the quality (or lack thereof) of their systems?

Do they pay you for making nasty, snide comments about someone else when they say something about a console you don't care for?

Do you own stock in those companies? No? Then why do you care if they do well or not? What, exactly, is in it for you?

Do you think that Bill Gates or Kaz Hirai or Reggie Fils-Aime is going to cut you a check for that profanity-laced putdown of a rival system?

I've been wanting to say that for a while. I've been coming to N4G for about 2 years now, and while I'm glad we now have a Gamer Zone, we still see nasty examples of rampant fanboyism, as evidenced by the frequency of "deleted posts."

History has proven that usually only one console survives a given generation. Most 3rd party development falls in line with the leading console leaving the other platform with infrequent and usually poor titles. Alot of people still have a bitter taste in their mouths from previous generations but one thing has changed. Sony's rapid expansion of the industry with the ps1 and ps2 and nintendo is tapping into a previously unexplored causual market means more gamers. More gamers available the more revenue meaning more then one console can survive... Now you said that sony or microsoft or nintendo could care less that fanboys are constantly going back and forth online with this my console is better stuff.. But what you dont realize is that this is all free publicity for these companies that money cannot buy. They probably love that internet forums are ablaze with this stuff. But as long as companies dont abandon their platform early then I think all 3 will co=exist in this generation......

People don't always realize that competition is good for any industry. It forces companies to put more focus on their products which (usually) is good and beneficial for everyone. Fanboys don't always realize this. If there were no competition, such as a monopoly, we would be FORCED to pay whatever companies want for their product IF you want it. That's only one example of the hazards of no competition. People should be happy there are other consoles out there to increase competition which will make it a better gaming industry for all.

i joined N4G in september because i felt it will be a cool place to discuss about games with people that share the same common interest.

But it becomes so ridiculous when news regarding a game you have been waiting for comes out,and the posts are over run by idiots down playing the game,console and even questioning the sanity of people that own the console.Sometimes people are not even talking about the article but just out right pissing on each other faces.

I made a comment once that i had pre-ordered GTA4 and i got 27 disagrees just because it was the 360 version.A few days ago i said i will be ready to buy a next xbox console by christmas 2010 and Anego Montana said the idea makes him want to puke and i also get 17disagrees.Sometimes i feel like leaving,but i seriously dont know anysite like N4G,so i stick around and hope things will change.

know why so many people act like they hate fanboys or actually do hate fanboys. Thing is there are fanboys for everything, football teams, politics, other tech out there, and so on. If I were to say" patriots suck" than would'nt that be a fanboy comment. Its okay to debate things and sometimes get out of hand, it's natural, some people are unfortunately immature while some feel free to be immature because they are in the internet instead of in a face to face debate.
I think most people who focus mainly on hating fanboys and seem to drift onto disliking one side more than the other are fanboys themselves.

The reason you find more ps3 fanboys occasionally is because Sony's PS3 has improved in sales, and the ps2 is still around. I was debating on how the PS3 would not be a flop on launch date before I got a ps3 and many ps fanboys now don't even have a ps3 rather a ps2.

I think that only trolls exist in these types of gaming sites. Those are users who insult others, make fake news, make videos attacking another system, etc. most of their time off.

I think there are so many PS3 fanboys cause now they have a system to champion, and its no secret that Sony has a large install base. For the year Xbox 360 was out it was king, but now with 3 systems there is more to argue.

I gotta say all the Sony bullcrap really makes me not want a PS3, when before I was planning on getting one at some point. It would be nice to have actual conversations about how a game is, what is great, what can be changed, but so often the conversation goes something like this:

"I hate Halo, it sux balls and anyone who likes it is a moron. I have no idea why its so popular. Resistance is going to own Halo's a$$."

JUst remember if you had a ps, ps2, and are planing on getting a ps3 then you probaly have a much less biased aproach to things. I didnt know what a ps1 was when I had a 64, then I saw RE2 and had to get one. LOved all systems even the dreamcast(which I actually kept), and hated xbox 1 when it came out cause Halo 1 beat MGS2 for game of the month in egm. Not really sure why I hated xbox, but I was younger and illogical. I got an xbox and I loved it. Now I chose to get a 360 first, and I can easily ignore biased opinions, cause I was once the same. Now I dont see how you could hate either system, unless of course you hate video games. That is the true story of how i went from snes/64 fanboy, to a sony fanboy(hate xbox), to wanting all systems cause they all have great games for me(except wii, I hate it although im sure mario and zelda are still some amazing games).

This guy must be a fanboy because a year ago when ppl were bashign the ps3 about price and no games I didnt see this article. Must be the ps3 picking up speed he needs to throw some anti-ps3 things in the air. Also most ps3 fanboys dont bash other consoles but defend our own. All I seen a year ago was how worthless ps3 was and how its a flop etc. If there is a sort of bashing going on lately blame the 360 fanboys who started it. Most of it is sort of payback.

In all my years of gaming, have I never heard so much bickering about which system is better. I believe what it is, is that we have an entire generation of kids that grew up on the Playstation brand. With hundreds of thousands of Sony units sold equals a hell of a lot of brand loyalists.

Sony loyalists speak everything that Sony has taught them over the years. Where as users of other consoles speak more independently. The most common mistake I hear from Sony users is that Sony brought them Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, Guitar Hero, Resident Evil, etc...

Often times you will hear Sony users say that they like Playstation because of the controller. Well, if thats the only controller they've used, of course they are going to favor it.

There's no reason to like Xbox brand. The original Xbox only sold 22 million systems world wide and was an OK system at best. Most people hate Microsoft. Xbox 360 is an unreliable system (RROD). However, those people that like Xbox 360 simple enjoy it's library of good games.

Wii owners Love Nintendo. Nintendo has a History of AAA 1st party titles. There are many reasons to love Nintendo.

Sony owners love the Playstation brand.

You are also blaming this on sony fans.. That in and of itself is just as bad... You're right we're coming off of two generations of sony dominance. But sony didnt arrive to this esteem by accident. They were once a fledgeling console maker taking on the almighty nintendo... I remember when I got my ps1 and fell in love with it I had to go to school and listen to all of my friends attack me because it wasnt a nintendo 64... But sony pulled of the unthinkable and dethroned the mighty nintendo.. They did this through innovation and catering to the tastes of a maturing game community.. Nintendo stuck with the same formula for years. I myself owned an nes, super nintendo, sega genesis, nintendo 64, ps1, ps2, and now a ps3.. I love sony products and have never had a reason to not like them. They constantly innnovate and drive the tech advances of the industry. I wanted a 360 but after the RRoD issue and the disc errors and so forth I cant justify paying for a faulty product. I do like their games though so I just hit up my friends to play them...

I agree that N64 users cried during that generation and they cried much. Now you don't hear much from Nintendo Brand Loyalists simply because the Wii is the #1 New Generation console in the world. However, Playstation Loyalists came off a 2 generation high and are behaving in the same manor as N64 users did back in the day. However, there are a hell of a lot of Sony/Playstation loyalists, much more than the N64 users back in the day and they are crying loud.

I have my PS2, PSP and Playstation 3. And Like most gamers, there are tons of games I love for those systems. I pray that we see another Shadow of the Colossus for Playstation 3. However, I can't stand the hordes of Playstation extremists that plague all the game sites. And yes, there are a hell of a lot more of them than Xbox 360 or Wii fans.

Perhaps one of the reasons why there seems to be a surge in PS fanboys is because this is an even more exciting year for the PS3. I don't think there's more sony fanboys, there's just more reason for them to be more vocal than last. I think the author made a mistake in somewhat singling out Sony Fanboys instead of talking about fanboys in general. Its like a sportsfan, they have there team and that is great, but if you can't see that there are other good teams, then you are a troll. There are lots of pro PS3 and pro 360 fans on this site, and there is nothing wrong with that. The problem is trolls, they come on here with one thing in mind and that is to annoy as many people as they can. Thats why when a 360 article is posted a PS3 troll goes into the forum to comment just to annoy. N4G has become so much better at sorting through most of it, especially since the update to the site. IMO N4G is the best gaming site and I like to think that some actual game developers and what not come here and actually post, because some stuff written in these forums can't be from just any gamer. i think it was November 2006 when i joined, but i'd been checking the site a few months before I joined. Ive never really got into these arguments and bickering but ive always kind of enjoyed reading it. I remember when the main characters were The Truth (I think), the Mart (not at Xboxkings then though) LiquefiedArt, Scuba Steve etc etc, i know its a bit weird remembering the names but i do. back then, things were a bit more tit for tat, but recently ive seen a real change in this site, and other sites. people have start getting racist ie panzerfaust, homophobic, mocking people for the country they live in or how their grammar is on the internet. i dont like where this new generation of gaming is taking us in terms of side taking. ill admit, i do support the ps3 more than I support the 360, i dont think there is anything wrong with that. but its when stupid people start taking it to the next level over what seems to be such a trivial thing, is ruining gaming as a whole.

way back then, this site was extremely pro xbox, and now over time its weaned off it, and there was even a point where it was about equal, and now the tides have shifted to the side of the ps3.

fanboys will always exist, its human nature to defend that which you have enjoyed time with and spent money on. so i do agree that extreme fanboys are ruining sites, i dont think fans of the consoles are, how boring would it be if there was no competition?

i know one thing for sure, fanboys will continue to thrive.

The Average 360 fan is an Adult gamer and thats why the Attatch rate of the 360 is so high, adults dont have to ask Mommy and Daddy to buy games. The average 360 gamer will not waist time fussing with a teenage PS3 FaN.

Most sites like n4g and lots of other sites would not even exist if it were not for fanboys people around here know each other by screen name and i think most people come back for the heated arguments even if they will not admit it. Its like saying nobody enjoyed being on the high school debate team people love to argue its not just games. how about star trek vs star wars batman vs superman tv vs movies any car or home audio supplies any topic people will fight about.

I think after E3 we will see a ton of 360 gamers back on this site bringing things back to normal! Most 360 owners just want to game and really could care less about Sony and Wii news! SOny fans have become so desperate to win this year to the point were all there BS stories and hype over PS3 has really started to kill this site! N4G needs to sperate 360 and Sony fans again because this site is quickly being forgotten!

To be fair its always been vocal not just recently. You have to be blind to not have seen all the dumb useless comments about the PS3 when it 1st came out, or about the Wii before it even came out.
