the story happens to take place in an area where black people are dominant in numbers. White people died in a series of RE, South Americans in another. Seriously ... people need to take a chill pill. Rock band and guitar hero cater to the masses. When the masses like the music you listen to, then you'll get to hear those songs. I like rock/metal and still don't like more then half the songs in guitar hero.

Your RB/GH statement is exactly what I'm getting at. When the masses listen to what I like.... and caters to the Masses. It caters to fans of Rock only. and do the Masses who prefer Rock really outnumber the Masses who listen to more than just rock? Singstar caters more to the masses (Music selection) than RB/GH. It's just not as fun without the instruments. I like music across the board, and feel that RB would be so much better with variety. Some feel it's just fine because it's what they like. Or Devs say "I like this and if you don't, I don't care". Now you have people on the outside looking in saying "I wish they were more diverse in their musical selection" and people on the inside saying "tough @#$@ for you". The Masses are actually being left out. I guarentee, there are more people NOT playing RB than there are people who are. Masses indeed.

It's called 'Rock' Band, and 'Guitar' Hero for a reason. They are made to play your favorite Rock songs. It's for a specific genre of music where the songs originators are of many different nationalities. If that's not what you like, don't play it. Guitar Hero. In that name, any song with a guitar should qualify? Should they be Heroes?

Music I like. What could that be? The games tend to focus on (But not limited to) Modern Rock and Metal. What about some of the older rock? Bruce Springstein? Prince and the revolution? Could those be considered Rock?

Being a minority, I see things from a different light than the majority and when some of them don't see or want to understand my perspective, what do they say? "Well, Don't play". Even though I would like to. Is it so hard core that they cannot open up to a wider audience willing to embrace the subject matter, only if it appealed to them a little more? A game isn't supposed to cater to everyone and just because you're a minority and don't like the selection of songs does NOT mean that GH and RB are racist. Guitar Hero and Rock Band have to be the weakest arguments for racism I've heard. There are a lot of classic rock songs. It just happens that the fastest (and hardest) songs are metal songs. But that's racist.

If a game designer would never put a minority in a prominent role in a game, would that be Racist or would he have to call the person out of name to qualify? Custer's Revenge where the object of the game is to dodge the arrows and have intercourse with the local indian women. I hear M$ Are remaking it just so they can get some attention and get some pervs to buy a 360 not as if theres not enough of them on Live Already. Choosing to portray different races in different situations does not = racism. Games can be realistic and show complex social interaction that's racially charged without the games themselves being racist games, or even promoting a racial stereotype.

The difference is those people, most notably South Americans, are a mixture of Spanish and Native people. Haitains are not mixed, and were brought over by their Spanish overlords for explotation. It is about marketing strategy. RE5 aims to American audience where caucasion dominated. In this case, RE5's main character is white does make sense. I wouldn't suprise if RE5 were made for African audience and the main character is black.

There is definitely a double standard. We're still paying for slavery even though most white people today know that it was a terrible, often barbaric thing. There is still a sense of white guilt, and it needs to go away.

You seem to be straying away from the topic here. This article is basically saying that these 6 games are racist. Except for cluster, i don't agree the other 5 games are racist. Blade206 in his earlier comment seem to suggest that there is some form of racism in games by his mentioning of no black male lead in any AAA games. When i read that i remember seeing a black lead in crackdown and GTA3 i think. Its just my observation and i don't really believe the fact that most game leads are white reflect devs racism but rather because they are trying to target white people which i assume make up the bulk of the gaming audience.
Off the top of my head i can't think of any country that is dominated by white people that is not developed and since developed countries i assume is where most gamers are. Personally I'm reserving judgment on RE5 until I see how the storyline plays out. If there isn't at least one (should be more) Black-African character that's a competent, non-zombie, and good guy/girl then, yeah, the game is racist. The fact it's made by Japanese game makers doesn't ease my mind one bit. In Japan they're not known for their stellar accuracy or sensitivity when telling stories about blacks (or any other race besides Japanese, for that matter). I still see black characters in modern anime and manga that have huge, deformed lips, and in this day and age that's incredibly ignorant of those so-called artists.

First off, RE5 is based in Haiti unless I'm mistaken. You all may or may not know this, but Haiti has one of the oldest legends regarding Zombies. Many in Haiti still believe in them in fact.

I completely understand and hear the point about this being less inflammatory if now, or at some point one of the MANY heroes of the RE series had been black. But since the history of Haiti is what it is, and the game is not in Africa, (Which would have been pretty forced) I'd have to say that the makers of this game HAVE considered and been somewhat sensitive to the race issue.

Having a black hero amongst the many would be a good thing for the series. Especially since they have no problem with having blacks as the villains/fodder. But this game isn't racist. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this game becomes a favorite amongst Klansman, Skinheads, and other anti-black racist ignoramus'. I can see how you might not understand. And I personally am not offended by the idea of this game, even though when I do actually end up seeing it, I might cringe at a stereotypical feature or two. However, my Grandma and Grandpa who are only in their 70's, My own Father's parents, were sharecroppers. Not the "Oh that's the best job they can get." sharecroppers, the "Boy, you can't leave here until you done paid off your mythical debt!" sharecroppers. They couldn't vote for the first half of their lives. My Father grew up during the civil rights movement and lived through racism that makes what I've experienced pale in comparison.

I have a very close friend of mine who went to Haiti, for a peace mission with the UN army. He is very white... and he said that everyone there is black. That it is very difficult to find someone white and when they do they are from another country.

In the 10 months he spent there he didnt meet one single white person that was born there. That being said... he also told me they were a lot of fun... after most of the conflicts were resolved and peace was predominant. He went to parties and they made fun of him for being white, in a respectful manner, which he thought it was fine and he played a lot with them too. He made many good friends there and since many in the Brazilian Army that went there for the UN were also black you can pretty much assume that he was the minority and people were still nice to him.

So... this brings me to this... if you are going to make a game in a place that most of the people are black, be it in Africa or Haiti most people should be black. If you are going to make one in germany, spain, argentina... most peple should be white, in Brazil most people should be variet, since here there are people from all races and they are very mixed.

Back to the original subject - As a black man I don't think these games are racist, but it should not be hard to understand why some people believe certain games are racist. Especially when you consider the fact that a majority of the time most video game heroes and protagonists are white. I was very pleased to an African-American protagonist in GTA San Andreas. That game had many signs that could be seen as racist - being CJ, you could just be a black man going around killing white or latino people if you wanted to. It easily could have been a black-on-other races killing type thing. Me personally I dont read into video games like that I just play them.

And no Unchartered was definitely not a racist game - some of the guys you kill in the game were white aswell, one of the main enemies was a white British guy. Dont spoil such an excellent game!
