'Brain Age' Creator is Freaking Crazy

Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, the man behind the popular Brain Age games for the DS, is a pretty strange dude. He refuses to accept any of the $11 million in royalties he's entitled from his involvement in the games, and he doesn't even really like videogames in the first place. All he wants to do in life is work. What a nutjob!

While it certainly is admirable that the good doctor is so obsessed with his work (he studies brains - big surprise), you'd think there would be some room left for fun. Well, you'd be wrong. Dr. Kawashima lists "work" as his only hobby.

He doesn't even play his own games, and limits his kids to a mere 1 hour of videogame playtime per week. Per week!

Twizlex5931d ago

Wow, that guy does sound a little... off.

Iron Man 25931d ago

Nah he's not crazy,he's an idiot!;)

rofldings5931d ago

I'll take your 11 million dollars :(

Rocko5931d ago

Way to throw away your family's financial security. So many things that money could pay for.

rofldings5931d ago

Seriously, why leave that money with NINTENDO? At least take it and donate it to charity if you're against making money off video games or something :/

eclipsegryph5931d ago

Now neither you nor I know of this person's financial status before or after the release of brain age, but I highly doubt that the good doctor is wanting for money. To me, this is a very noble thing to do.

So I guess in short - if he needs the money and isn't taking it then he's got some mental issues; au contraire, if he doesn't need the money and isn't taking it, then his mental state isn't really in question.

bootsielon5931d ago

I was waiting specifically for you to make a comment like that, especially in the gamer zone.

antoinetm5931d ago

agree with my 2.2 bro!

He has his own reasons and those are probably more articulated than many opinions given on this site.

But that's when you realize that people (myself included to a certain degree) are slave to money.

Rocko5930d ago (Edited 5930d ago )

Ok moron, describe it so it doesn't sound retarded. He could do a LOT of things with it, even donate to charity like rofldings suggested.

I don't really see why people would classify this action as "crazy", unless the good doctor really was in need of the money. If he doesn't need it... well then, he doesn't need it! Is that something I could do? Probably not... hell, I could use all of the money I can get right now.

I also admire this man's dedication to his job - it's inspiring. Certainly not something that everyone should be doing, though, but I think that it's good to see someone who truly enjoys what he does and wants to do it to the best of his abilities. It's sad to say, but that sort of work ethic appears to be disappearing in American culture these days.

Nintendo DS Turns 15, Top 10 Best-Selling Games on the Handheld

Nintendo's 7th generation handheld, the Nintendo DS, turned 15 years old today in North America, and will be turning 15 in Japan on December 2, and in Europe on March 11, 2020. The handheld was on the market from 2004 to 2013.

The name for the Nintendo DS comes from its dual-screens. The handheld features two LCD screens in a clamshell design. There were three redesigns for the DS released during its lifespan: the Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo DSi, and Nintendo DSi XL.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units worldwide, according to Nintendo. That makes it the best-selling handheld and the second-bestselling video game platform of all time behind Sony's PlayStation 2.

One of the coolest features I liked about the DS was its ability to download demos from kiosks as well as the wii. Share play is also another good feature. My kids still use that when playing mario kart on trips.

EddieNX 1619d ago

The DS is one of the best consoles/handhelds ever. Some serious memories with that thing

trunkswd1619d ago

You are not alone. It sold over 150 million lifetime. Only the PS2 has sold better.

darthv721618d ago

Not that this changes anything but have you ever wondered what the actual number of people are that buy into a platform? It's never 1:1 as i can attest to you that I have 5 DS units in my house as well as 5 PS2 systems. We know that some will trade up when a newer version of a platform is released. Especially if it is a special edition. but like i said, it doesnt really change things in terms of units sold overall. I was just curious if anyone else wondered about how many people actually buy into a platform.

360 sold like 85 million units but many were replacements, like the PS2 has also seen its share of replacement units purchased and same goes for PS1 or any system where there could be a problem and the consumer decides to just buy another instead of go through warranty service. It's just a curiosity I've had for a long time.

I dont think people are double dipping on Switch units but some could because they have multiple kids in the house (like i did with the DS) but double, triple and even quadruple dippers are a thing. Especially if someone is into collecting the variants in the hardware. I do but i tend to get them in the second hard market which means they were already added to the initial total.

I'm pretty certain that New Super Mario Bros was featured in some DS bundles.

https://www.nintendo.co.uk/...

By your own rules it must be excluded from your list.

deafdani2752d ago (Edited 2752d ago )

Some DS bundles, as you stated.

It's not the same as the examples mentioned in the article (Wii Sports and the original Super Mario Bros), which were bundled for almost all of their respective consoles. I think they were bundled for all NES and Wii consoles in pretty much all the world except Japan.

That said, the #1 spot was definitely bundled with hardware in all cases (Wii Fit), but the author explains why it made this exception: because everyone bought the Balance Board especifically to play Wii Fit anyway.

franwex2752d ago

I like the way this list is categorized. Good job!

Tetris? I haven't even read the article yet...

Fun list... lots of good stuff. Too bad Chrono Trigger DS didn't make the cut though.
