Is this nuclear wasteland worth scavenging once more?

By now most people are familiar with the Fallout series. Bethesda's reincarnation of the games brought a whole new audience and some wonderful changes. It's quite interesting to see that some of the original folks from Black Isle studios have come to work on it. Is this nuclear wasteland worth scavenging once more or will you only be finding scrap metal in those lockers?

In short, this game is just a clone of Fallout 3 with a different story. Some improvements have been made such as true iron sights, crafting, and customizing. There's just really not enough new here to consider this a full game, rather an expansion. But if you liked Fallout 3 chances are that you will enjoy this game.

Graphically the game hasn't changed at all. In fact, it might have been a step backwards considering all of the ridiculous glitches in this game. The character models are still bland and the environments are flat and lack detail. Style is still there but it's something that we've come to expect from Fallout.

The main storyline, compared to Fallout 3, is significantly weaker and side quests seem more interesting. You're not as connected to the story as I would have liked. The voicing of the characters, however, is still pretty solid. Again, to be expected.

Now for my largest complaint.

The game is broken. Not broken as in "easy" or "exploitable". Broken as in "you can't play the game for an hour without something going wrong", broken. Save often and don't get to attached to your files. I've had files corrupt, companions disappear, quests that never finish, and people spawning with just their underwear.

Fallout: New Vegas isn't a bad game. What's there is great, when it works. Fans will probably want to pick this up but save your caps and just go play some more Fallout 3.

Graphics
The engine is getting old. It's nothing completely ugly and the art style is really good. But we've seen this all before.
8.0
Sound
Obsidian really captures the mood whether it's with the ambiance or the tunes played over that pip boy.
6.5
Gameplay
This would be much higher if the game didn't try to stop you from playing it with all of those bugs.
8.0
Fun Factor
It's still that great Fallout formula. It's great fun, when it works.

Games That Were Bad on Release, But Are Now Great

BLG writes, "Some of the most popular games have had a rough start, with some of them being downright unplayable.

Despite that, developers have managed to turn it around for them and make their game worth playing. Here are some games that had a rough start but were pretty great."

Sea of Thieves... I'm not disagreeing that the game has improved in terms of content. But I feel that the most significant change between now and its release is actually the public perception. Nowadays, most people are aware that the game is a multiplayer PvP-focused experience first and foremost, and not "Black Flag made by Rare". Consequently, people dismissing the whole experience because the single-player aspect is lacking or the story is plain are much less common.

Several years ago, i submitted an idea to Rare that would change up the mechanics of battling opponents in the game. whereby if you died in battle, you turned into a skeleton warrior and had to fight your way back to the land of the living. It was an interesting twist on respawning and would allow the player to experience both sides of a battle.

I keep hoping to see something like that get added to the game.

Every game in the last 2 decades...

It's sad that this quick retort is more often than not true... The industry's acceptance of release and patch has gone too far.

Days gone! By the end of the game I couldn't drop it down! I went around so many hours killing zombies! It was addictive by the end.

That game was just plain good game. It didnt improve, it was just good.

I don't know, I got it abit late, and struggled for a few days, and then all of a sudden it just got good!!

Fallout Anthology Edition Looks Pretty S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

The Fallout Anthology Edition is coming to PC very soon, and is packaged with some very S.P.E.C.I.A.L. bonuses.
