PS3 begins to overtake Xbox360 in sales since launch

I hate to beat a dead horse but it looks like the PS3 is starting to pull ahead of the Xbox360 when you sync sales since launch date.

The Wii is currently sitting at about 19.54M units worldwide. Xbox360 has over 16 million sold (early holiday reports are putting it in the neighborhood of 17 million). The PS3 is sitting at 8.92 million units sold.

Xbox 360 hit its peak with Halo 3. Even with Halo 3, it still got outsold by ps3 and (lol) ps2 at christmas worldwide.

But most of all, like i've stated a few times, xbox 360 will never outsell ps3 because its aimed at a hardcore audience. Highest attach rates, willingness to pay for online, its shows that its a hardcore gamers console. And that means that there is a peak it will hit in sales very soon, just like the xbox 1. Casual gamers are what make up the sales, look at the wii for crying out loud. PS3 has a great balance of hardcore and casual games though. Xbox 360 has nothing that matches sony's offerings. And thats why they have, will and always will fail. Did i mention Microsoft hasn't made a single PENNY of profit throughout their entire xbox franchise? They don't know how to run a gaming business properly. Sony does. And Sony's back.

I don't blame you for combining the sales of the PS3 AND PS2 before comparing it to a software product since there isn't a single PS3 exclusive title that came close to Halo 3's sales alone.

lololol Is Sony making money? They're loosing a LOT of money with every PS3 they sell. Sony did it wrong. Why? After PS1 and PS2, PS3 had to be a console that had sold more than 30M until now.
Sony was in a fabulouse position, and now is fighting to make PS3 1/4 what PS2 was. And that would be VERY good.

Sony knows how to make gamming business? The past says so. But there was'nt a full pocket Microsoft in gamming years ago.

Do you think a company could do the same MS did without losing the same money? Nintendo lost with N64, lost with GameCube. But made money with Gameboy and NDS. Now's selling Wii's. But how many companies are making money with Wii? Right, Only Nintendo.

And making money is not only selling consoles, is selling GAMES. Microsoft is doing that very well. Nintendo is digging a BIG hole because Wii games ARE CRAP.

I have noticed more and more though that they're aiming at the casual gamer. Sony simply has the advantage of a large pre-installed fanbase. It doesn't make it better though. Take an honest look at which console has the best games.

We are talking total sales like world wide. Although the USA is the largest console buyer they are not the only nation that does so. after october 07 they had hit 7.3 million sold world wide. and they sold 2.5 million in decemebr. so that equates to them being about 9.8+ million sold. but we'll know in march. they're fiscal year ends at that time so they've have to report they're sales, by then they should be closer to 13 million with the rate they are selling worldwide. all i can say is this March, April, june, September, and fall holiday season will be it's biggest yet. expect them to sell in the upwards of 3 million around fall and have a steady sell through of 800K-1M a month before that tiome period

Biaised thinking put aside I truly think Sony at the launch of PS3 were expecting to sell far more than 10 million PS3.
It's actually head to head with the xbox despite the fact that the PS2 was FAR FAR more popular than the Xbox.If this generation fineshes in a tie or a slight PS3 victory I think it will in a way be a defeat.
On the oyher hand if 360 wins this generation sith a slight victory it would be considered as a HUGE victory.

is pretty disappointing for Sony, as it's about 2 million less than they had hoped for at the beginning of 07. But it's actually amazing that they even pulled that number off; they were only selling about 200K consoles a month worldwide for a good 6 or 7 months straight. It wasn't until the release of the 40GB that sales started to hit enormous figures.

On the other hand, Microsoft seems pretty happy selling 7.5 million consoles in 2007, which they claim to be their biggest year. I kind of find that funny since they sold 8.5 million consoles in 2006, but they did make a lot of money off Halo. That graph actually shows really well how crap xbox 360 has always done. Look at the red and green lines. They're neck and neck. See where the red line shoots up near the end? Last gen the PS2 dominated with about 75% market share. If someone wasts to get the actual numbers, it should be around 150 million PS2's and close to 25 mil Xbox's and 25 million GameCubes give or take.

You really can't make any reliable predictions about console sales when so many important factors are expected to change. There are several, but let me name just one: price. MS hasn't even begun to play hardball with the price of the 360. At this point MS can probably afford to slash the price of the 360 by $100 across the board. But hasn't anybody else noticed that MS has not yet bothered to respond directly to the last price-drop on the PS3, which is now several weeks old? I myself am wondering why MS doesn't seem too worried by recent gains by the PS3. In the past, MS would match each Sony price cut step for step, but it hasn't felt the need this time. Does MS have anything under its sleeve, or is it just being overconfident?

They're actually planning to do one when GTA IV releases, but not a massive price cut. Just enough to convince people that it's cheaper to get a 360 for GTA than a PS3, though they'll also have to compete against the likes of Metal Gear Solid.

The underlying problem is that they went from selling 8.5 million consoles in 2006 to selling 7.5 million consoles in 2007, despite a gentle price cut and the release of Halo 3. A second price cut might not do much for console sales.

If they cut the price now they will be cheaper than the Wii. They will also force Sony to cut prices to 299 and then it will definitely be over for the Xbox360.

The Wii provides a bottom in pricing for the 360. If they go too much lower than what is supposed to be "inferior" hardware, then investors and consumers will see it as them being desperate. So thats why, they have been losing everywhere but NA for awhile now to everyone, but they would rather add value than drop price.

I agree with DJ in that the best time for the price cut will be near the GTA4 release. However, they have to give a GOOD price cut. The small one they did earlier was okay for the short term, but they need to start getting closer to that 200 dollar range to really start making some noise. Unlike the the PS3, the 360 won't be able to ride on the success of their previous console. They have to make moves and they have to make them soon. Otherwise, they'll just waste away their lead on Sony.

Price is actually Microsoft's biggest advantage right now, but they are reluctant to fully use it at this point. They've already got plent of 3rd party support. They just need to get the price down to sway in the mass market.

If you want to talk about a company losing money, it is alot worse for Microsoft to have to give out 1-2-3-4-up to 12 (is the highest number of RROD I've heard by a single user) consoles for your hard earned $279-$449. And all of this for only a console, and one that isn't expected to have a very long life span. While the PS3 is not only built like a tank, but also like a trojan horse. It has helped push Blu-Ray on top of the HD market and is going to help reap a cash windfall as consumers continue to upgrade their home entertainment setups.

Why? What I saw in the past was Xbox born in a PS2's full world. PS2 had a number of games that put Xbox on the floor.
PS2 was the best console of all time. Now, things are different. Now I can say the 360 has a way better lineup. And most important, good games are comming up.

One thing is fighting a 100 Million install base. It would take an huge number of GREAT exclusives to make PS2 owners buying a Xbox.
Another thing if securing an 8 Million advantage.

PS3 is a much stronger brand. But 360 is getting it's space in USA, UK and Australia. I have no doubts PS3 will 'win' in Japan and very probably in Europe.

The only thing MS has to do is putting money in TV Advertising and keep releasing games on it's system.

The important thing here is that probably there won't be a side losing.

Microsoft gaming has never made a single cent - far from it, they have cost the company an absolute fortune. This is a matter of fact and well recorded - it cannot be disputed.

There is significant pressure on the MS gaming division to start reducing the huge losses, and anyone expecting MS to try and force Sony on price should remember this. MS do not manufacture hardware and so cannot reduce its costs significantly. Sony makes its own electronics very well, and it is already reducing the manufacturing costs of the machine to the point where it can sell it at a profit (see reports on N4G). MS are not stupid and must realise that a cost war to buy more market share will not be in their long term interests.
Gates Billions have already bought MS a significant slice of the gaming market, but there is a limit to how much more money they are prepared to drain away.

I think most objective viewers can see the way this is going to go now, its just interesting to watch the twists and turns along the way....

MS games division posted an operating profit for the first quarter of this fiscal year for the first time ever. This is true. Their first ever reported profit of $165 million.
The previous fiscal year was a $1.89bn operating loss. The year before was $1.28bn operating loss. So how can you say the gaming divison is making any money - can't you add up? Theres big big difference between starting to show samll profitability, and having actually made any money in the buisness.
If you tried to tell your bank manger your buisness was making money with those results he would laugh at you. He'd be right to do so. Those are cold hard facts - if anyone needs to admit how wrong they are, its you.

Also completely wrong is your assertion that Microsoft produces its own hardware for the 360. The componants are all sourced from real hardware manufacturers and assembled by another company. Are you even on this planet? What has design ownership got to do with manuafacturing costs? I'll tell you - nothing. That they don't have to pay licencing costs for technology is fine, but that has no bearing on their ability to refine the manufacturing process and improve yields to reduce costs, 'cause they are not making anything. They pay a fixed price for the hardware they need. The Design rights have no effect whatsoever on a companies ability to produce cheaper hardware through the cycle, so you can repeat it all you like, you are just makeing yourself look even more stupid. Their redesign was forced of course due to the appalling relaibility issues (I've had rrod twcie myself.) Given that they have had to redesign the box, of course they have taken the step of introducing the smaller chipsets to not only save money, but to try and improve the designs reliabilitty. This is the only way they can have a significant effect on costs - a complete re-design. As anyone with any manufacturing knowledge knows, most improved costs come from refining the processes for an exisiting working design - not by being forced into a design rethink.

Whilst I respect everyones right to hold a different viewpoint, I do so detest arogant armchair kids like yourself, immediately resorting to insults as you so plainly can't make your self feel good any other way. What I don't get is a console with over 90 million current owners of the last gen model is neck and neck with a console that was a newcomer 6 years ago.

sony has had 11 years of domination,. Original xbox managed like 25 million userbase, so when you really take a hard look at the numbers who is doing better early on or will at least surpassed it's former userbase? I don't see sony selling 120 million consoles this gen. The fact the the console is more expensive, they will make less money.

After dropping a billion dollars in insurance, why do you think Xbox 360 dropped $50, because they wanted to? No, because they couldn't drop it more. The next price drop for 360 will probably be $50, since $100 would make microsoft bleed even more. They're tired of lossing money on the Xbox division.

Anyway, when did sony "drop the price twice"? PS3 was $500 on the low end, and $600 on the high end. Now it is $400 and $500. It's just one price drop, less components and cheaper ones. On the other hand, Microsoft is taking too much time to upgrade to cooler components, as they're not a hardware company to begin with.

Sony can still make their price range go lower if they bring the 20GB PS3 back from the dead with no WiFi, no BC and cheaper components. Microsoft's next prices will be $249 to compete with the Wii, $299 to compete with a 20GB PS3 if it ever comes out, and god knows what they'll do with the Elite, though it's likely to be $379 to compete with the rest of the PS3s.

However, I do see PS3 overtaking Xbox 360 in Japan, and everywhere in Europe except in Britain. Once the format war is officially finished though, I see PS3 sales skyrocket in 2009, surpassing 360 in the UK, and neck-and-neck in the states. After that, it's all PS3 and 720.

Agreed, segasage. All is still uncertain; however, given the current state of affairs, it's safe to say that 360 will not win in Japan, and that in smaller territories PS3 is overtaking 360. It all depends on the UK and USA outcomes to determine who wins between those two. Still, though I have both, PS3 is my console of choice because of the D-pad, my old game library (I got the first 60GB PS3 to play all my games), its success in japan and its hardware reliability. Blu-ray is a plus.

PS3 has just killed HD DVD and the overtaking of Xbox 360 is its next target. I thought it might take couple years to do that before Warner's announcement. But now with Warner's move, the accelerated momentum of Blu-ray plus the out-pouring of major PS3 exclusive games in the coming months will certainly drive up PS3 sales tremendously in 2008. Once Devil May Cry 4 comes out, things will start to change (things have been changing since the White PS3 was released).

When MGS4 releases, it'll be the last nail in 360s japanese coffin, and if it isn't that, then it'll be FFXIII and Versus. Even if those end up multiplatform worldwide, PS3 will reign supreme in japan with that supposedly amazing triad of games.

However, if those do end up multiplatform, it'll be a lot harder for PS3 to dominate in America; it all depends on timing, and also on the outcome of the format war.

the 360 now has 16m + consoles sold and the ps3 is at a almost 9m, this means there isn't anymore a 8m gap bat only a 7m, so one million of advantage is gone, there are still 7 to go, and i think that in 2008 the ps3 has all the right cards to do so.
In the long term i think it will win, also the wii, the exclusives of the ps3 in 2008 will show everyone the true power and potential of the hd gaming, instead the wii will become more and more old in the eyes of the people, i don't think it will last much (i personally would never buy a wii, i will play it almost never and it doesn't have the games i want) i see it as a temporary console till the next gen wii with hd graphics will come. the ps3 will win also because of it's long term good technology. the 360 will have a tough competition next year, but i also think that the ps3 will not have the dominance of the ps2, i think it will be a 60% at it best and a 45-50 at it worst performance.

Im not a regular poster but a regular reader and im growing very tired, along with many others, of the fanboyism. I know this is supplied by fans of both the PS3 and xbox but i feel the PS3 fans are the greater offenders. Xbox 360 has been a success. The fact that it has achieved comparable results to the PS3 in 1st year sales is fantastic. I fully expect the PS3 to do well in 2008 as, i have to be honest, it appears to have a great lineup. Saying that the Xbox 360 will have at least 6 or 7 great games next year and the lack of "Brands" might allow new concepts to flourish. Overall i reckon the PS3 will outsell by around 1.5/2 to 1 for the year. But the 360 will still have a massive base.

Bottom line guys its great news. 3 consoles doing well. More competition, more innovation.

I agree with you. I own all the machines and am a games fan, not a company fan.
The reason you see such trolling is pretty obvious though.
Since the launch of the PS3, sites like this one and many web blogs have contained many rants and tirads against the PS3, with so called 'fans' belittleing the merits of the system, its storage medium, its chances of selling any units at all and decreeing it was impossible to program any game on it that could ever rival a top 360 game.
However, within 10 months for some regions, Blu ray has all but won the format war, machine sales are picking up and gamers are seeing some trully great software titles - all the things that certain parties on this, and other sites, have been forcefully telling people would never happen.
Human nature mate - those that always wanted or said the PS3 would do well, are now shouting it from the roof tops, and fair do's, when you go back and read the abuse they have had to take for so long, you can't blame them.

Does it make for interesting reading? Of course not, and I wish blind ignorance would go away whatever direction it comes from. But given the unfairly negitive comments Sony's fans have been enduring for so long, no one needed to be fortune teller to see this situation arising once the machine picked up steam.

Hopefully it will all blow itself out in another couple of months, and people will get back to be more interested in games than company politics. Its sad that an article about a great new gameplay mechanic will attract so much less attention than 'yet another flame war part 253'.

I know i have seen worldwide VG charts but i don't trust them as to be really accurate. I have a gut felling that they PS3 and x360 numbers are very close right now. Too close to call. With the impending Blu win. The PS3 will be in a much better position right now onwards, couple with the heay hitters arriving this year. The PS3 sales i believe its going to skyrocket this year. I still believe thought to get PS2 level of success. Sony need to lower the price even futher to below the 300 USD mark. Why is everyone complaining about the PS3 price now it's only $400.

With BR pretty much the Winner, you will see more PS3 sales since it is the best price Blu-Ray player out there.

Myself and 3 other buds at work that I play on XBL with all the time have said since the start ... if Blu-Ray wins, we will buy a PS3. We have all bought PS3's within the last 3 days to use as a BR player. We still use our 360 as a game machine and for XBL, but we are glad to now have PS3 consoles even if RIGHT NOW we are only using it for movies.

While in FS I heard a sales guy recommend a PS3 to a gent looking for a BR player. Even though the man replied he has no interest in games, the sales guy still confinced him to buy the PS3 (40GB) since it is the cheapest BR player and can be upgraded VIA Update.

I am enjoying my PS3, I have Motorstorm (which I could not get onto an online game even after 20 minutes of trying) and Warhawk which was pretty fun to play. Also a TON of demos. But I have to honest, after farting with PSN and the PS Store, I really have no issue paying for LIVE considering what it offers over PSN. This is not to sound fanboyish, just being honest seeing as how now I can give an UNBIAS opinion due to the fact I have BOTH. Also not to keen on the download "THEN" install. That caught me off guard.

Regardless ... I am looking forward to the transfer of BR movies to my PSP via USB when that is put out. Also want LBP and KZ2 VERY BAD !!

2. At the time many were skeptical about the 360s potential; it's better to perform better than expected. PS3 has dissapointed.
3. No matter how well SONY sells, the 1 year lead was a strategy.
4. MS hasn't really played with price yet. $50 bucks is nothing.
5. 360 owners are playing cool games TODAY; not maybe next summer, not in 2012.
6. I own both (PS3 60 gig) and 360 HD DVD. Games look better on 360. Movies do look better on PS3.

I have to ask again because no one answered before, but why does it matter which console is leading in sales? All the consoles have good games that appeal to different people and at this point they are all here to stay because they all have a decent install base. If you agree with that statement as i am sure everyone here does because they own a console that they enjoy playing, then which console is leading in sales doesn't matter. There will always be fanboys that say the console they have is leading and try and rub it in someone elses face, but that is why we ignore people like that. when PS3 has actually sold more units in total, then this article may make some sense.At the moment it appears that's not the case.It's all very well manipulating stats to prove your point,but bottom line is how many units have they actually sold in total,all together, worldwide.To my way of thinking it's not possible to pull in front of something, until you have caught up with it first!!I don't think we will ever see the likes of a PS2 again, because the market has changed and there is no longer one dominant player.Lets just get used to the idea of a two or three console market and accept that this competition, while not great for MS, Sony and Ninty, is great for gamers. The 360 has a record high attach rate, and multiple games developers made a profit last year because of one console (the 360).
No developers made a profit from the ps3 sales or even Wii sales.
So its a FACT that Developer support for 360 will grow through out 2008 because 360 gamers BUYS GAMES. While sony fangirls are too busy hating and b!tching.

The xbox 360 made up for more than half of all the profits for the GAMES industry last year and its all supose to end this year LMAO.

Software sales are the real tell as to who wins the console war (that is where the profits are). Sony is losing this so far. If people start buying a PS3 only for Blu-Ray and buy very few games with it, that will hurt Sony's console war cause (but help in the movie distribution war). Please realize that console sales are shown b/c they are an indication of future software sales. This may not hold as true for the PS3 b/c of its strength as a movie player, which may be its primary purpose for many households (I would love to see some marketing analysis to see what % of households use it primarily for gaming and for movies). 08 is absolutely the critical year for the PS3 turnaround. My prediction is a dead heat (virtual tie) in the end between the 360 and the PS3 (Wii is still an unknown as to how it will do w/ software sales long term). There will be no clear and dominant winner like the PS2.

All the movie format BS aside, I think this the most important year for PS3 and the 360 to show their big guns.

I do plan on picking up a PS3 due to the mod community (and I don't mean for a crappy UT game either!) and the fact that it allows web-browsing on tv.

I've yet to see any true games that I simply HAVE to have on PS3 whereas there have been a few on the 360 thus far but then again, a few look pretty possible this year.

But I always knew and have known that Sony would never be out of this console war (which in my mind is stupid, people should enjoy whatever they have). It is easy to see Sony's strength because they did this last gen. PS2 was a cheap DVD player therefore many people purchased it. The same goes for this gen. Now that Blue Ray is pretty much the winner, PS3 is a cheap blue ray player. There is no real secret to it. Once Blue ray is the sole format people will invest in a PS3, which is exactly what happened last gen.

It's not really reason, I would say. On an international scale, the PS3 is handing out ass-whoopings to the 360. The fact that you're comparing US to Europe is pretty ludicrous being that Europe is much larger in terms of population. And no, North America is not the more important market - consumers in general are. The ratio in which PS3 is beating 360 in Europe compared to 360 beating PS3 in North America is WAY different. Remember, PS3 is only a year old and look at what it has already accomplished. 360 is two-years old and is kind of stuck in limbo with sales. So before you begin to compare, take into consideration how much of a difference international consumers make more up in console sales than 360's in North America.
