WTF are you talking about? The Xbox 360 has a total of 510,000 owners for Japan. It sold 40,000 copies of Lost Odyssey on it's first day. Thats almost 8% of the 360 user install base for the first day alone. Considering the Xbox 360 and it's games dont sell very well in Japan, I would say thats a great start for Lost Odyssey. Thanks for trolling. You failed horribly, good luck next time.

Oh and nice spin job on Uncharted. Lets not even go there. Seeing as how the PS3 has an install base almost 3 times as big as the 360's and it's best quality game to date only sold 7,000 on it's first day. Thats not even 1% of Japanese PS3 owners. Thats not even half a percent. Need I go on?

It's a visually stunning game, but the demo just wasn't that fun (for me obviously, I'm not making a sweeping generalization). I can't get used to TPSs, so that's probably a part of it, but look at GRAW for PS3. It's doing well at most stores here that I've been to.

Now, I'm not into RPGs, I'm more into GT, FPSs, and strategy games, but to me the low sales make a lot of sense.

Good for Lost Odyssey despite what IGN said. A Japanese game sells well in Japan and that's nothing new. Uncharted may sell more since this is only first day sales but I don't think it would appeal to the average Japanese gamer because the game is not so easy and can be unforgiving at times especially during the later levels.

See, I don't think it has to do with difficulty, it has to do with interest. RFOM has a great story and I think has done well here, but it's an FPS. Uncharted has an interesting looking story (I don't know all of it), and the graphics are way better than RFOM, but it just doesn't grab me.

Frankly, I rarely understand why games are popular in the West (except COD and the like), and I'm from Toronto.

Uncharted's biggest region will be the U.K. Aside form that, Sony has a lot of ground work to do for their 1st party games. they just don't promote them like they should. simple as that.

they do to, in fact they play more types of games than anyone in NA. Most of which don't even make over to NA. Halo 3 and fall of man did well in Japan. Its simple NA loves shooters so even a average shooter will sell really well, so average rpg sell well in Japan. Only first tier rpgs sell well in NA, ie Final fantasy. Its the same both country's just different styles. I fail to see that NA is more sophisticated and less open than Japan. Think about it Zelda, mario, shadow of the colossus, final fantasy, DDR, the wii, Resident evil, devil may cry, DW, MGS,street fighter and those are just the well known games and inovations. Mr. mosiquito and katamari damacy are perfect example of obscure titles. Shoot most of those invinted the genres that we soo love today. Western games call of duty, doom, mass effect, halo, KOTOR, wolfeinstien, half-life, GTA, medal of honor, bioshock. See a pattern in those games??? GTA did change the whole sandbox style games, but looking at this one could very easily argure that Japan not NA, play more types and invent new games. Not saying NA type games are bad though, just Japan as always been the leader.

Unless the game is TOTAL JUNK, it will sell. Maybe not like certain franchises like FF and DQ and some new ones that hit the PS2 but those 2 are heavy hitters, even if they are not great.

I wish Japanese gamers were more open to western games as western gamers play many Japanese style titles, almost all the major 3-rd party franchises have been by Japanese Devs.

Western Development have gotten a lot better but still a lot of FPS/3PS games. There seems to be a lot of dying Genres. What ever happened to Streets of Rage/River City Ransom type "Brawlers"?

Anyhow Good for Xbox 360. It's kind of sad that RPG games sell the most over there, when there are so much other types of games that deserve a play or a rent, well at least Western games. In Japan, even mediocre RPGs sell well, but in the West, only the ones with the best gameplay and stories are popular. The opposite is true of FPSs.

There is no genre here that is unplayed, and the XBox is popular amongst most gamers, just not in the general public (which is what is important.

Japanese people are just like everyone else: they like what they know. (If it hadn't been for the RROD this gen, XBox would have sold a lot more here. If it's built well, the XBox 720 will sell well.)

Well if those hardware sales are mostly for playing BluRay games, developers will prefer to give more 3rd party support to the XBOX 360 then the PS3. Even in Japan if a userbase of 600.000 sells more games then a userbase of 1.5 mln.

So your punchline is pretty useless. Its the combination of hardware & software sales. Hardware sales world wide the 360 has been on top for almost the whole year of 2007 and will sell the most this Christmas. Software world wide the 360 this gen of consoles makes about 54% of all sales, PS3 did about 16%.

It just doesn't look pretty for the PS3, reminds me a bit of the Gamecube last gen when 3rd party dev's saw the dissapointing software sales back then after the initial support.

Lotus notes are alive and well, as for that 120$ for microsoft word? i've not had to pay that much in years, Infact I got the microsoft Student suite with this laptop, and uninstalled it and got openoffice.org

If you dont like a software suite then dont use it, but dont complain its expensive if your not paying the money for it, you can get Microsoft works student edition online often for 60-90 bux.

CoD3 by the end of year made 855k.

40K seems like a tremendous number. I have the impression that Japan install base is something like 800K or something. Using that number about 5% of the people who would have any reason to by a 360 game bought one.

That seems pretty damn impressive to me. This is the kind of number that could also influence customer base as well (i.e. console seller).

I don't have a model but one could reasonably come up a statistical model of overall sales of the game for a region based on 1) critical review and 2) opening day sell rate. Given those two numbers, you could conceivably predict the final sell rate to existing customer base as well as potential customer base. Those numbers could also be used to predict increase in customer base as well.

Remember that in Japan, MS wants to get a foothold and name recognition. Games like this (5% first day sales, wow) will give them those in spades.

Chicken or the egg, consumers or developers... It seems like MS is doing what it did for Windows model. Get the developers (games) and consumers will follow. In contrast, Wii is following a different model, get the consumers first then developers will follow.

Both style seems to work as long as there is a strategy behind it and good execution and good staying power.

I own a 360 but even I can see the logic in your statement. However the PS3 has an install base 3 times as big as the 360. Plus last time I checked the Japanese werent too interested in a console made by Microsoft. So yes you correct that Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon for that matter would sell better on the PS3. In response to Zhuk, not all PS3 games failed to make a profit. Resistance sold over 2 million copies. Dynasty Warriors 6 sold like crazy when it came out in Japan. I believe it was 250,000 copies sold(not to sure about the number) and the 360 version sold like crap. imagine when the other more popular franchises comes out like MGS4 and FFXIII. If Dyasty Warriors can sell like that only in Japan on the PS3, then MGS4 and FFXIII will probably double that number in Japan alone.

The Japanese only really love role playing games, Idol Master, and strategy type board games or arcade games.

My advice to Microsoft Japan:

Create more high quality Japanese RPGs and purchase more games like Ace Combat, Idol Master, Winning Eleven and Operation Darkness.

Then your system will succeed and sell 1 million units in Japan, BARE MINIMUM.

Those are excellent results, give Mystwalker and developers funding and let them make more quality RPGs on the 360 right away!!!!

And stop porting FPS games, leave those to the niche aisles where the hardcore racing/shooting fans go to don't display them on store shelves. Display only strategy games and games like LOST ODYSSEY, that is the key to long-term success in Japan.

Well, I thought the comments on this thread were pretty interesting, seems people just repeat "myths" whether they are true or not, there's alot of BS on this site, alot of 360 games have done pretty well in Japan, well if you COMPARE its sales to *PS3 GAME sales and NOT DS or Wii sales that is, in fact with the exception of Everybody's Golf, 360 has kept pace with ps3 in software sales and in some cases surpassed ps3 software sales for the same game, also many 360 games sold well compared to ps3 best selling games and another misconception seems to be that ANY rpg will sell well in Japan or better than ANY fps= NOT TRUE, there are some notable rpgs that didn't sell well for ps3 and 360, but whats more surprising is when you compare install base, once again it seems EVEN IN JAPAN 360 fans buy games....ps3 absolutely kicks 360 ass in hardware sales in Japan, yet it doesn't translate to software sales for ps3, again only 1 game showed a considerable difference in margin of sales between 360 and ps3, both console big games usually decline drastically from their 1st weeks but ps3 GAME sales overall can only be described as miserable, ironically it wasn't any of the hyped games sony loyalists swore would be huge sellers, it was a "girls in short skirts golf game", NOT a RPG, and NOW all of a sudden "Uncharted, wasn't suppose to do well in Japan", wtf? really? since when?, thats what you guys said AFTER R&C didn't do well, but BEFORE it was released I wasn't hearing those words of caution.

You're using games on 360 that are either Japanese games, or came out earlier in Japan. For example, Oblivion came out earlier in Japan. Enchanted arms came out earlier in Japan (and even then it was almost a tie). Most of the games you talked about were either Japanese, came out first on 360, or both, or were half assed ports on PS3. There's also Halo and Gears, but those are pretty much the only reasons to own a 360. After all, 360 owners in japan are hardcore gamers (otherwise they wouldn't even bother). Anyway, PS3 still has better sellers, as mentioned above me.

This is really sad if you think about it. A huge title like LO a JRPG at that only sold this amount is just crazy. If a title that was supose to be this big came out. One of my room mates is a Japanese exchange student. He bought a 360 here in the U.S because we make such a fuss about it here. He got Halo 3, Mass Effect, Gears of War. Take these are the 3 biggest games on the 360 to date. He sat in front of it all weekend long tring to understand what we saw in it. As a gift I got him 3 months of Xbox Live. He did the online thing. He cept an open mind about all 3 titles. He asked many questions about each game. The end result being he sold the 360 because the only thing he liked about the system was Xbox Live. To let you know what he spent the most time on was Gear of War. He said that wasn't a bad title at all. It looked really good and had a lot of well designed functions. The scary part of it all was he just flat out hated Mass Effect and Halo 3. These 2 games make NA people cream thier pants when they look at them.

p.s. I was just wondering how many americans live in Japan. That would explain why the 360 has sold as many as it has. I am not hating at all just makes me wonder.

Considering the following:

1. It was THE most anticipated game for Xbox 360 in Japan, meaning it should have sold to at least a more decent portion of the install base.

2. Final Fantasy has consistently sold on launch day 2 million copies more or less, regardless of install base.

3. Again, talking about the install base, it's safe to say they're hardcore gamers in Japan; shouldn't they be buying games, especially this one?

4. Gears sold to half the Xbox 360 owners when it came out... the question is, why can't Lost Odyssey do the same? Here's why:

a. Lost Odyssey looks like a PS2 game

b. Hironobu Sakaguchi is old

c. Lost Odyssey, graphics aside, is not the next RPG revolution. Like Blue Dragon, it's trying to mimic its main competition, Final Fantasy, instead of beating it by revolutionizing the genre.

Microsoft should have gotten a fresher japanese team, not Sakaguchi which has either run out of ideas, or has been forced to comply with Microsoft's lack of creative orders.

2nd why would a new rpg IP like Lost Oddyseey even come close to an established most well known rpg series like FF? *in Japan I might add?

3rd even if FF itself was on the 360 it still wouldn't come close to ps2 sales, its simple math and their not enough 360 owners, so unless you expect 4 mil people to run out and buy a 360 the first week Lost Odyssey goes on sale than its just not going to sell with FF type #'s, it won't sale that much either with ps3 current install base

4th there are other great jrpg's that didn't do nearly as well as LO has done in just one day, so why is LO the game thats suppose to beat FF sales, thats just plain crazy to even assume.

5th Fact is the 40k, is great for one day sales for the a 360 rpg in Japan, you just *need* a reason to downplay it.

im still clueless as to whether this is a good number or not, all i know is there is a related article stating that is a glorified ps2 game not on par with next gen so either way, i guess if you like it play it, if not dont but i dont see 360 sellin much more than this is sonys asian market. soon enough the same will be with the US and UK, sony will win as usual

I knew it would do great in Japan, but why flame Uncharted. Thats just ignorant. Uncharted really isn't a game Japanese would enjoy. Sounds like another Fanboy story.

I'm not flaming Uncharted, even I think it should sell alot better than it has, but saying the reason is just because it isn't a Japanese game seems untrue, Assassins Creed and many other western type games sold alot more than Uncharted has in their first week, this is a big ps3 exclusive, that doesn't mean anyone expects it to have huge jrpg type sales so if it had sold 50k, I think that would be good for this type of game, on the ps3 with the size of its install base but 7k is just pathetic, and I'm not hating on the game I just say its pathetic because I actually think its sad that so few Japanese gamers have given this game a chance so far.

So my question is WHY are ps3 exclusive games in general NOT selling well?

That's pathetic. You know what would be interesting? First day sales for White Knight Story compared to Lost Odyssey.

Besides, all in all, saying "40k" is great is just pretty pathetic. The fact that there are half a million 360s over there, the land of RPGs, should be a reason for the game to sell to at least half of the 360 owners. Just because those were half the shippments it doesn't mean it's good; in fact, it just means that Microsoft is being realistic about 360 being a major flop over there.

How am I being a hypocrite? Did I even say that Folklore did greatly? Folklore was also pathetic, but you also have to consider that Folklore isn't really oriented towards the japanese, at least gameplaywise. It plays a lot more like fable, unlike final fantasy, dragon quest, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.

You are also being a hypocrite. You are one of the Xbots that has downplayed sales of PS3 games in the rest of the world. With the initial install base, many of its games have done from OK to great, including resistance fall of Man and Motorstorm. Heavenly Sword, Ratchet, Warhawk and Uncharted aren't doing that bad.

Furthermore, Lost Odyssey sales are indeed pathetic. Just look at Halo 3 and Gears of War sales; near a third of the install base, even though they're not the only games you can play on 360. How come Lost Odyssey, 360's "killer app" for japan couldn't even reach a tenth of its install base? Gears and halo sold a lot faster; and considering most of Xbox 360 owners in Japan are hardcore... yeah, that's enough. FAILURE.

Didn't ff 10 sell for 2 million in Japan alone in the first day? Such gap between the sales. For an anticipated jrpg LO sure doesn't do that well, only so so. Most 360 fanboys here like William and Jokes are not even jrpg fans, so it's only natural that they are praising the game without any basis.
I agree that with bootsielon that they should compare the sales to White knight story, as that game is japanese orinted and may sell for a million in its first day.

I do see LO selling well in US and UK. Just for the simple fact that the 360 needs more RPG's. If they are good or not is up to the people that buy them. I am just hoping it is better than Blue Dragon. I would say for now a must rent not a must buy. Then you can see if it is worth the time and money.

Jokesonyou: I think Uncharted will be the casual buy that going on in time. In Japan a lot are playing Mario games that have released and Wii fit ( that I still don't understand lol) Assassin's Creed did do well in Japan. I personally think it is the style of game it is. I really wish that all country's would give each others game a shot. In a way it can bring the industry closer and build a lot better ties between them all.

Elite360: That was a good read always makes me laugh when people flame like that lol. Hironobu is a very good dev always has and most likely always will. I really don't think that will effect him making a PS3 game in the future though. Money is the key to game devs. They don't work if they don't get paid. I'm sure if MS keeps them going they will last along time. But I do see them doing a Wii title before a PS3 title. Simple fact is it just cost less to make them. The PS3 does cost more to dev for, but your can pretty much bank on if it is a JRPG they will make it up farely quikly.

The name of the game is funny since its Lost Odyssey and he did lose an Odyssey.

It will fly off shelves over there. I pick it up when it released here too.

Odyssey has been getting great press and reception in Japan, people are loving it and its getting better word of mouth then the likes of Blue Dragon.

Nobody has any idea how many sales it will make at the end of the week, but 42,000 copies about day 1 is excellent!!!!

And more & more positive previews of the game from the harshest of critics, say that Lost Odyssey is fantastic.

They say "This is what a next-gen RPG is." They are greatly enjoying the game and couldn't care less about FF.

They said Lost Odyssey has a more adult themed story and mature well-crafted narrative, that its hard to pin it down even!!!!

The whole feel of the game is a great refreshing RPG which delivers a compelling epic with real emotions and darker tragedies that all human beings are bound to go through.

Like earlier comments they also say the characters feel human for once!!!! Even the main characters, have very little dialogue that's out of place. Its all very adult, all very human which is what Japan enjoys now!!!

They really love the game and there's no reason for random tools who don't understand how such a game works, to tear the game apart because it doesn't run perfectly on every Xbox!!!!! Every Xbox is different!!

Just think for a second... do you think FFXIII would have sold AS BAD as lost Odyssey had it come right now and the install base of PS3 was the same as Xbox 360? It doesn't really matter if it's new IP, Lost Odyssey was as hyped in Japan as Gears of War was in the states. I didn't expect, naturally, for it to sell 2 million you morons, but think, at least it could have sold 200k to a group of 500k consoles, most if not all of which are hardcore gamers. The thing is, Lost Odyssey might be a good RPG, but hardly genre defining, and it definitely has plenty of glitches... so that's why Lost Odyssey recieved lukewarm sales. I would have expected not only 200k, but also Xbox 360 surpassing, for at least one week, PS3 and maybe even the Wii. It did not... this game was Xbox 360's make or break in Japan, and it seems that it didn't work... for much at least.
