IGN: GC 2007: Halo 3 - The Forge - Halo 3 just got a whole lot cooler

This might be the coolest addition to Halo 3. IGN has seen the map editor, and it was great. Four player co-operative play online is a big plus. But the Forge has picturing a Halo 3 with limitless possibilities. At the Leipzig Games Convention, Bungie's Brian Jarrard showed IGN this Forge, Halo 3's tricked out map editor. He also showed a few other things IGN hadn't seen yet and talked more about the campaign scoring system.

The Forge isn't a map editor like you've seen in other games before. This editing tool doesn't allow you to warp the terrain or move major objects, those will stay just where Bungie put them. Rather, the Forge allows you to drop in any of the weapons, objects, vehicles, spawn points, or tools present in the Halo 3 world. If you think a map needs a flamethrower in a specific place and it's not there yet, the Forge will grant you your wish. If you want all of the spawn points for one team to be located within a small building, the Forge can make that happen. To keep things from overtaxing the memory, each map has a maximum amount of dollars that can be spent on it. Likewise, each object you can drop has a cost associated with it. A gun might cost $2 while a large vehicle up to $40.

I love the effects of the snow when somthing moving at a high velocity hits it, like bullets, explosives or Spartans.

Can't wait to build my own gametypes and maps, they could package just those to things in a game and I would buy it, hell it's a game realy to build all that stuff look at Sim City and Age of Empires games.

Kinda reminds me of things you can do in Little Big Planet to a lesser degree.

They said that you can't alter the environment. You can decide to move spawn points, weapon and vehicle placement and it depends on a budget.

Seriously, there is no comparison with any other game with the level of interaction that's going to take place via XBOX Live. I can't wait for this, but the question is..."What do I do first once I get the game?". All I know is that it's going to feel like the longest drive ever from the game store back to my home once I pick up my copy.

hopefully you can make a rule that says when "Team A killed by Team B, Team A switches teams". (For Zombie/Infection games) or maybe it will already come with a "Flood Gametype".

actually they're making an "infection" gametype which is the same as Zombies or dawn of the dead. Don't know if you turn into flood though.

DAMN!! That's insane...lol create a lift and than have the guy who is editing move so your guys jump over a wall. Lol that's insane, this is going to make multiplayer last for more than 2 years...people ask about 2008, hell my 2008 is looking to be my 2009 lol this game is going to own my life.

I wonder how Forge will play? It sort of reminds me of an RTS in that you are able to drop new stuff on the map. But this is an a smaller scale, so I'm curious to see how it plays.

Am i missing something? please correct me if i am wrong but this isnt a map editor, it is just an item placer and spawn point mover?? I dont want to start a row but am just curious

Because you can customize rules, object behavior, environment (gravity, lighting, etc) and you can make changes during *gameplay*.
In other words, its another game mode, not just an editor.
Theoretically, you can have the two team leads making environment chages countering each other as part of the team strategy. (Reduce gravity when you're falling, increase it when the other guys are dropping, etc).
Going to get wild out there.

Halo Racing!

lol, you can have tons of different types of racing games too, that would be within matchmaking!

1. Just for Ghost and Brute Ghost?

2. Just mongooses, like you said, and you play exactly like diddy kong, stick another spartan on the back of the mongoose witha lazer, or rocket launcher and your golden!

3. teams- one on foot on in ghost so you can ambush, game varations are limitless here

I love Halo, and i like Diddy Kart Racing when i younger. So.....I always wanted to race ghosts. And if "FORGE" is what i hope it is, i will be able to make a huge Halo/Diddy Kart Racing game. 4 on 4 matches, and heres how i hope to do it.

(from what i've seen in previews, of map editor I hope i can do all this)

1- i need a big map
2- i will place the concrete barriers all around the map to make a track
3- place 4 ghosts inside the tract. And off you go! I guess i will have to make an observation tower, or use some thing from the map, where a player can track the laps.

WHat you all think, lol. Honestly i hope this can be done, imagine all the possibilities. I hope bungie keeps Forge upgradable, through patches, so something like this is possible, i hope its not too linear.

Hey, bungie why not release a matchmaking game called Halo Racing, and use all my ideas as an unranked game to see if its popular. Would add some different dimensions to the halo online experience. LOL, why not.

In they bungie poscast they were talking about a gametype they called "rocket racers", 300% shields, checkpoints , mon[err]geese, rockets only. They said they might make it a gametype to ship with, but you can make it yourself. Player on back shoots rockets, other player drives, and you basically race. Since the shields are at 300% you can take a few rockets before you're through.

Being good at Halo Multi-player (and most MP FPS) only requires two things: Accuracy and knowledge of the maps, having both is what makes you the better player.

That being said, partly removing the knowledge of the map is essentially getting players on a more balanced level as the less experienced Halo players (that may have accuracy none the less) have as much chance as others of finding Items.
