Is Batman: Arkham Asylum better than Uncharted 2? You betcha

Batman: Arkham Asylum has taken out the top honours at the BAFTA awards, wrestling Best Game from accolade powerhouse Uncharted 2. Personally, we don't mind that Batman pipped Uncharted 2 to the post -- as we noted in our Most Overrated Games of 2009 feature, Uncharted 2 was far from perfect.

Just two days ago you didn't mind an article saying UC2 was the best game ever, and now someone who says AA is better is being a 360 fanboy? Why do you have a problem with his opinion and why do you automatically assume he's a 360 fanboy just because he enjoyed AA more?

My GOTY was Demon's Souls, runner up was UC2. Much more original, fresh, not a shooter, gameplay was deeper, etc. Does that mean I hated UC2? No.

There is never ever one GOTY choice, that decision is subjective and personal. Don't be so elitist as to say that UC2 is the only game that people had to enjoy the most last year, it's completely close minded and you have no right to make that decision for all gamers.

I will say that the majority enjoyed UC2 as GOTY and I have no problem with that but that doesn't mean other games weren't enjoyed by other gamers even better. UC2 is a textbook game that was great on all fronts, but Demon's Souls was just as great, but it just didn't get as much attention or resource-support from Sony.

This is what I hate about what became of UC2: fanboys are too convinced with thinking that it's "perfect" to realize that criticisms exist and then if you try to criticize it you become some xbox fanboy? Sorry, but there were many great games in 09: Killzone 2, Demon's Souls, Forza 3, etc. Everybody that doesn't agree UC2 is GOTY is a 360 fanboy? What amazing, fair, and sound logic that turned out to be.

Batman: Arhkam Asylum is a great game but is nowhere near as vast or as deep as Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 has Batman beat with controls, graphics, enemy variety, and environment detail. A better comparison would be Uncharted 1 and Arkham Asylum.

last year MS brought games, uncharted2 was competing aginst sony exclusives also (which were also amazing). masseffect2(big MS title) came out this year and no1 is really talking about it like they still are uncharted2. gears2 was awesome (another huge MS title) but yeah... uncharted2 had some steep compitition imo, and they still do and they still are on top imo just because of how much people are still talking about it and how many awards it has won, still to this day the awards have not stoppped coming in.

It may not have U2 caliber production values, but it was the game i enjoyed the most.

Uncharted 2 combat is one of the better shooters I've played, with a fantastic cover system which is easy and functional to use (although the shooting and cover system was better in Uncharted 1)

Batman, which should have been about huge open areas and cities was buried by Uncharted 2 in that regard (and many others) I liked AA but after a while it just became ridiculous. After a while you would think the joker would run 50 guys at Batman at once. And on that fighting point, the melee system in Uncharted > Batman. This could go on all night.

Not having a multi-player doesn't make game any worse, thats exactly what I hate about modern reviews. Many of them give lower scores to single player games just because they lack multi player.

Havent yet played trough neither of the 2 so I can't tell. But AA looks more tempting of the 2. Probably because it had some freshness in it.

Goty of 2009 is however Demons souls, no puny games like Uncharted2 or AA can match it.

This article reminds me I still got to play Batman:AA. UC2 was an awesome game, funny, fun, nice stealth mechanics, made the TPS cover system more dynamic and enjoyable, the platforming, set pieces and the train level was mindblowing. For some reason it won so many awards.

I would like Batman:AA to top UC2 because I always want to have the best experience possible, but I really doubt it can.

I loved both. UC2 has online though, so its a better "game" to me at the end of the day. However, GOW3 is definitely my GOTY for the past 5 years or so, but thats just because of the presentation/gameplay/effort. Batman was pretty repetitive, the bosses were simple, and the polish stopped at the characters. Kinda like how MGS4 just showed up and broke the mold. GOW3 is sick.

No, Listen I loved Batman AA, but Uncharted 2 raised the bar for games, You can't describe the feeling you get going through Uncharted 2 for the first time. You see so many things in the game that you never thought possible. Uncharted won 4 GOTY's, and Batman didn't win any. Arkham Asylum was a great game and I loved the fact that someone finally made a good superhero game.
They are both great games, but only someone that either can't play or hasn't played Uncharted 2 would say any game is better than uncharted2.

Agreed. But what got me is the metroid way of doing things. This is BATMAN. The man with every gadget imaginable. The man who's prepared for anything and everything. But I can't rip out a grate cover cuz my grappling hook doesn't have the attachment for it.

The man is a physical wonder with every martial art known to man but I can't just reach up and take out a great and jump in without an attachment.

To make matters worse, he actually visits the backup batcave and has a chance to re-equip but still he lacks gadgets and needs to do a crapton of backtracking once you do get a certain one.

Horrible game design. I'm SICK of backtracking.

I've heard the sequel will let you have the run of Gotham so hopefully we won't be forced to backtrack and make the game a gadget collect-a-thon.

PS3 owners ackowledge that Batman AA is a great game. No question about it, probably the best Batman game of all time (and unlike Superman and all his craptacular Superman games throughout all time, that isn't a light statement), but anybody that owns a PS3 doesn't have to debate this and turn this into an issue. Am I the only one who thought Batman AA got pretty repetitive after awhile? I mean, I liked it, but the combat was pretty weak and the boss battles weren't anything special either. Yeah the atmosphere of the game was cool, but in terms of actual story it wasn't anything special for a video game. I'm not saying this to promote Uncharted 2 (although I did love it too) but I feel like a lot of the little things in AA add up and would have definitely brought down the score if it hadn't been the first playable comic book based game in years

UC2 is a great game, but everyone has the right to their opinions. I love Naughty Dog, but does that mean the enemy AI in the single player experience wasn't kind of "special ed" at times - no (or that some of the guns I carried before story elements began simply vanished after the plot engine ended - grrr). My opinion of the game was influenced a little by these rather objective facts, but I still rate it a solid 9.5 (I think I was a little spoiled by KZ2 and the Helghast - the kind of AI that lurks in your dreams). UC2 is simply fun and beautifully designed, but so was AA - just not quite as legendary as the former, but fun and eye-catching nevertheless.

personally, i LOVED Batman: Arkham Asylum. it is hands down the best Batman game EVER in the history of the franchise on gaming consoles. there is no debating that fact.

but if you are going to compare it to such a seminal title as Uncharted 2, be prepared to back that up with facts. I can break it down by category why Uncharted 2 is a better game than Batman: Arkham Asylum, fanboyism not included:

1) Story: The story in Batman: AA is bare bones. The Joker has taken over Arkham Asylum, and it's up to Batman to stop him. BOOM. We're done here. And truth told, that's ALL the story you need here. It doesn't need a complicated, complex plot. It's Batman vs Joker. What the game was lacking was any sort of characterization outside of the excellent peformances by Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamil.

There is no real dialogue that adds or subtracts to the characters/story. It's simply a means to an end. The writing is designed to get you from point A to point B, and to highlight objectives, not to establish characters or a believable world.

this isn't a bad thing, but if you are going to compare it to Uncharted 2's story, UC2 comes out on top. Now, the story in UC2 is no more complicated than Batman's: Adventurer Nathan Drake is on the trail of a mythological gemstone that is also being pursued by a nefarious war criminal who seeks the stone for personal gain. Again, a simple plot. Where I believe that Uncharted trumps Batman is the EXECUTION of that story. Characterization is key.

They establish throughout the story, with lots of in game dialogue/banter, and in cutscenes, who these characters are, and we see how they grow and change throughout the story. It's nothing deep or contemplative, but it's on par with an Indiana Jones movie. You simply feel for these characters, and relate to them. Batman isn't an easily relatable character.

Another factor to consider is the fact that, going in, we KNOW Batman is going to win. He's Batman. An established character whom DC ferociously protects. It's not like Batman is going to fail in his quest to stop the Joker. In Uncharted 2, it isn't saddled by that fore-knowledge that Drake is going to win. We HOPE he's going to win, and that his companions are going to survive, but that's not a guarantee. We KNOW Batman and Joker are going to live to see the credits. So there goes a lot of the tension.

Uncharted 2 bases a lot of it's narrative impact on the fact that, from the start of the game, Nathan is established as being in over his head. He has no sort of special martial arts training, and he's not really THAT handy with a gun or his fists. This makes the events leading up to where you start the game more interesting, but it REALLY makes the latter half of the game interesting, when you simply don't know what's next.

2) Graphics: I'll get this one out of the way now: Uncharted 2 blows Batman: Arkham Asylum out of the water visually. Don't get me wrong, AA looks GREAT. In my opinion, the best-looking game we've seen come out of Unreal Engine 3 since the Gears of War series. Batman and his Rogues Gallery are simply stunning, and the environments are nicely detailed. Thing is, the environments are confined to one place, and feel "samey" throughout the game. There's nothing wrong with setting a game in one locale, and they do an admirable job of trying to differentiate the various areas in the Asylum, but in the end, it's still one place.

The level of detail in Uncharted 2, however, is simply staggering. There aren't many 3rd person action/adventure games that feature the level of detail that Uncharted 2 has. Character models, animation, texture work in environments are second to NONE (maybe God of War 3 matches/exceeds it in some areas). Effects like motion blur and depth of field are also prevalent, and implemented better than in AA.

The number of different locations you visit also put UC2 ahead of AA. Unlike Uncharted 1, you aren't confined to just one location. You globe-trot to some stunning locations.

Again, I'd give the visual crown to Uncharted 2. It hasn't won "Best Graphics" award all over the industry for NOTHING. People aren't making sh*t up when they say it's the best looking console game out (again, with God of War 3 matching/exceeding it in some areas)

3) Game Design: Batman AA takes it's level design from a series I love dearly: Metroid. Honestly, you can't go wrong with that kind of setup (Shadow Complex is another game that does this method of game design superbly). Abilities are learned/gained through XP and discovery, and the game does a good job of pacing them out that way. My only real complaint concerning this game is it's one button combat.

I thought it flowed incredibly well, but was terribly simplistic. It did a great job of making your battles look cool, but I didn't feel like I had much control over what I did to the enemies and after a while, seeing the same animations for taking down enemies loses it's luster. You are fighting similar enemies throughout the ENTIRE game. More variance in combat would have been nice.

Uncharted 2 has fantastic level design as well, but carried out differently. Uncharted 2's focus wasn't to play out like a standard 3rd person shooter, but like a summer blockbuster movie. Each camera angle, and game play design choice was crafted to make you feel like you were part of a movie. The game has some rather fantastic set-pieces, from the tense opening, to the train sequence, to the convoy and more (I won't name the final location to avoid spoiling anyone who hasn't played it yet).

The game is paced so that you aren't doing any one thing for too long a stretch of time, whether it be gunfights, platforming, or puzzle solving. It's still a 3rd person shooter at heart, and I've give the fisticuffs to Batman: AA, since the fist-fighting in UC2 is very basic, but the game play and game design in Uncharted 2 bests Batman: AA, in my opinion, due to it's pacing and variety. It's more of a mixture of it's various elements, and how they work together to create this fantastic whole experience.

If Uncharted 2 hadn't released last year, I would have given Batman: AA GOTY, personally. It's an exceptional game, and it deserves the accolades it's getting, but people whining about Uncharted 2 being "overrated" just because it's the best it is at what it's doing make no sense to me.

That'd be like whining because, in 2006, Gears of War was the best game of it's type. And in 2007, CoD4 was the best game of it's type, and so on and so forth.

There will ALWAYS be a title, or developer, that simply excels at what it's doing in comparison to the competition.

Why people want to try and downplay and rob it of it's accomplishments is beyond me.

Killzone 2 was robbed of the credit it deserved last year, and that's a real shame, because anyone that has played Killzone 2 for any length of time would see that Guerrilla Games put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the development of that game. Same thing goes for Uncharted 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Hell, instead of comparing the two, I recommend getting and enjoying them BOTH if you can. They truly are excellent 3rd person action/adventure games, and should be in any gamer's library.

As a Playstation 3 fan, I'm glad that Batman: AA is getting some love. Uncharted 2 has swept the industry, and a lot of other quality games are in it's shadow. We don't need anyone "defending" Batman: AA from the "mean ol'" Uncharted 2. It stands strong on it's own merits. Rocksteady did a FANTASTIC JOB, and as a hardcore Batman fan, I thank them for their hard work and bringing me such a fantastic Batman experience. Just because I think Uncharted 2 is a better game, doesn't lessen how awesome Batman: AA is.

EDIT - and I agree with Alpha that Demon's Souls was a fantastic game, although I feel that it wasn't it's innovative features that put it over the top. The game play itself was fantastic. I think innovation is overrated this generation. a game doesn't have to innovate to be amazing. case in point being the two discussed here: Uncharted 2 and Batman: AA. neither are innovative in any true way, and yet they are still fantastic games, and Uncharted 2 raises the bar in terms of story-telling and execution/game play implementation.

First of all, Batman: Arkham Asylum is an awesome game, a really awesome game and it deserved every nomination it got and any awards it got too.

However for me, Uncharted 2 was simply head and shoulders above anything else released in the last few years and it's only real competitor has been God Of War 3.

Although I'd just like to say again Batmas is indeed a great game, currently installed on my PC and I'll be having another go at it once I get through GOW3 a couple more times :D

I think the fact PS3 is Japanese and has dominated for 2 gens convincingly is the reason why there is so much trashy journalism about this great machine. Also no U.S. console maker has ever been successful before MS came with Xbox (and if they didn't have so much disposable income they would have went the way of Sega & Atari as well.) ...the point being is that strong American patriotism in gaming journalism is a big factor in my opinion. Many U.S. based gaming publications, sites and papers and such are naturally going to praise a U.S. based company in a field that they have always been biatch slapped in. So of course the very limited Batman is going to outdo the Sony exclusive here. And I agree with one of the other comments on here about Batman:AA being great, but U1&2 destroy it, and even inFamous is a better more varied game.

AA was an awsome game, certainly from wash of other Batman games. But I saw things that just made think of some corners that were cut. Particulary the guard close up and Batman's close up facial animations were always the same. Just as Bio did with Mass Effect and even some in ME2 with the asari facial animations. I haven't had the chance to play UC2 so I can't judge just yet. But for me GOTY for 2009 might have to be ME2, and infamous is pretty close amd Dragon Age is really good..

The lack of variety really hurts the experience imo. And the combat system gets old after the first two hours.. I just cant understand why so many people are praising this game.. It's a good game, but nothing special. I guess theres a LOT of batman-nerds out there that have been waiting for a decent batman-game for years and years now..

Thats not taking anything away from Batman AA. It was excellent all the way through. Some of the best graphics from a multiplatform to date and a great fighting system.

The only grip I had with Batman was that I found myself spending more time in the XRay Vision View than anything else. Other than that it was a lot of fun, I hope they don't rush the sequel too much just to make a quick buck. The original AA was so good it would be a shame for them to just pump them out with little substance added.

Now that I've given Batman his due respect, Uncharted 2 reset the bar for action adventure games. Graphics, Story, Character development, gameplay, and downright sensory overload! UC2 has it all and deserves every award it gets. At this point in action adventure, UC2 has no equal.

My other Favs of 09: Demons Souls, Dragon Age : Origins, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone 2, and inFamous.

Hmm I'm split on this one...
UC2 had the BEST visual (none but illusional people can argue against that), but Batman was also very fun to play. Especially the detictive mode...

If you have to compare them to other games/movies Uc2's Nathan Drake was more like this gens Lara Croft/Jean Claude Van Damme/Harrison Ford/Steven Seagal/Bruce Willis, while Batman was.... Yeah Batman (George Cloony, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale).

My opinion is that Uc2 would win, but not big.

I haven't played much UC2, since I don't own ps3, but I agree what I have seen that it has best graphics at consoles. I will propably borrow my friends ps3 at some point, to play it trough, like I did with MGS4.

But talking about AA, I was totally blown away, how damn good game it was. I actually got first time same feeling, which I got earlier with MGS1 at PS1. I really got "buried in" the game. It's hard to describe, but it was there.

I see you people like to talk a lot of "GOTY's" here in N4G, and for me year 2009 it was AA or AC2, which production values was superb, and you could feel the passion and time it's developers had put in it.

Uncharted 2 however I couldn't put down, I don't think that uc2 gameplay wise was all that great, but the scripted events made it feel better than it was. Be that as it may I easily give it goty. There really wasn't another game that I found to be as good, well maybe killzone2.

I did not play Batman but allthough I can consider me a die hard PS and SONY fan I didn't like U2 that much. Grafix are a 10, no doubt about that, but I liked the first Uncharted more for it's story. If you were a new gamer going out to buy a consoles, you look at the 360, its cheaper, and has more games with high ratings. Tough decision right? This is exactly why after 3+ years, the PS3 is still 8 million in the hole. Cant recover from a deficit like that. I prefer the PS3, but it lost this gen due to price and lack of games compared to the 360.

Fable 2 didn't get goty 2008. What are you smoking? Fallout 3 got goty 2008 on most sites. Fable 2 was a geat game but wasn't of goty year standard. Fable 2 only won the BAFTA because Lionhead are an English dev.

UC2 is better than AA imo but AA was also a goty contender. Whether UC2 was overrated or not, it deserved goty imo.

AA is a good game but the console version isn't enough IMO to dethrone U2. The PC version mmmmmm maybe? As the enhancements in graphics and the Physx make the game a whole lot better.

Played both, beat both twice each, I definitely like batman more. It feels a bit more of an original experience to me, where with U2 I feel like im playing Gears of War in an Indiana Jones setting.

U2s graphics are pretty, but that pales in comparison to originality. As soon as a prettier game comes along noone will care about that game anymore, hence why it will never be listed in those best games of all times lists, which usually consists of all original games like Mario 64, FF7, MGS1, GTA3, etc... U2 isnt even close to being good enough for that.

Batman isnt either, but I will remember it for a while, but ill forget about U2 as soon as a game with better graphics comes out.

Uncharted is a fresh franchise and it felt like how god of war made the ps2. It evolved from older game mechnaics.

1) the game is pretty dam good graphics for a console
2) cinematic sound and cutscenese
3) the cutscenes flow with the game rather than mgs4
4) controls are easy and story is really easy to follow
5) you kindov had a feeling of the main character.... not as good as kratos though who is a total badass

Out of all this this makes a great console game cuz it can be played by everyone without too much diffulty or gore.

Hell even the stages in each area of the game felt different leaving out repetition

The only thing I did not like about the game is the guy felt a bit flimsly then again its a platform game
