Xbox360 Devs Can't Match PS3 Exclusives Without The X-Engine

Currently in the fourth year the wow factor of the Xbox360 in terms of forward movement with their exclusive titles hasn't been as strong and that's something that can hurt them in the long run especially when Sony has proved they have the upper hand with the power of the PS3.

2009 may very well have been a time for Xbox360 to restructure because 2010 seems to be turning out to be the exact opposite in terms of game quality, and the answer is the X-Engine.

Microsoft first needs the exclusive developers that can actually make games that look amazing. They have Bioware and Epic that's it. Their other developers aren't experienced enough to make a good looking game.

That any engine that is created to help make Xbox 360 games look better would simply be used to help the 360 "catch up" in terms of graphics to the PS3 and the PS3 would continue to stay one step ahead of the games. MS should have been focusing on this engine a year ago when it would have proven to make a difference. Now, the PS3 is the beast in terms of graphics and game play and the 360 is simply trying hard to keep up.

It's these kinds of articles that bring me back tot he one argument that Xbox fans had about how the PS3 only had 256mb of RAM and how it was going to prevent the PS3 from ever having better looking games than the original Resistance... Oh the good old days. lol

Well due to MS harsh NDA they place upon our heads, you wonder why we never say any thing, At the end of the day we still need to keep our job, sony do not care what there dev's speak about or show, it is all ways out the door Ms were like this when 360 first hit the lunch window, but now they have every dev keep quite in till the big show starts then consumers will understand why, MS have a no media or leaking of information policy in regards to x-engine which is a code name dev studio pined the new sdk that we got earlier this year cos it had a new engine new tools, for branch instruction sets and other. So my only point is sony had a better 1 gig sdk kit with edge tools up and running before ms had it sorted, sony devs have had a lot more time with there first party engine and sdk, it makes sense that ps3 games would out perform 360 but how power full is x-engine as a first party engine that is the question I ask the devs in the know that come here will x-engine out perform the ps3 first party tools. X Engine will certainly make quite a bit more improvement than "shades of grey". As I've been able to research, Microsoft did cull some of Xenos' functionality back in 2005 when they released the first dev kits that used a subset of Direct X 9.0c. Tessellation was one of those features (ATi gpus starting from the 2xxx series have this). The Xenos gpu was way ahead of its time.

The X Engine has already been developed. It was released to developers with the new dev kits, also everytime you go to download the latest Direct X drivers it has the XNA logo on the Install screen. New updates will be posted to both the Direct X/XNA SDK and the X Engine. They've merged their work in both areas into one SDK and the X Engine in particular is designed exclusively for game development on Xbox 360.

They're unifying under the X, lol :D

Let me explain it slowly for you. If the X-engine is real and it's THAT good why we dont see it in action? that was my post. Turn-10 is a key developer and Forza 3 is a new product yet it cant compete with Gt5P? I'm not saying game's crap, just it cant compete as the link proves.

Killzone 2 and Motorstorm CG trailers are a great example. Both showed fake gameplay and everybody went bananas. Even I did. Seeing the mud being flinged on the windshield from the inside of your ride was just plain awesome. Unfortunately, it was just to build hype since none of it actually was in game.

So yes Sony and Microsoft and everybody else does it. Don't give me this garbage PirateThom that only Microsoft just does it.

Wrong... you need to read more carefully. Yea they marketed it that way but at the end of the day Killzone 2 and Motorstorm both scored 8-8.5 and didn't sell that many copies. Therefore Sony doesn't get away with things as easily as Microsoft or Nintendo. Microsoft gets a 9.0+ on Halo ODST which is a full price game and sells like 5 million copies even though the game looks terrible. Halo 3 already looked really mediocre in 2007. Nintendo with Wiifit, Wiisports, and Mario automatically sell millions of copies and all get 9.0.

It wasn't a fake, the mud was actually implemented into the game, but later got taken off because of noobs complaining about having difficulties of seeing the track, and if you get your eyes off the track for a sec in Motorstorm, you're going downhill. :/

Game reviewers and consumers right now have there heads up Microsoft's ass higher than Sony's. Microsoft has definitely earned the right for that too because they spend the most in advertising and the most in securing exclusive deals. Only right now with the PS3 price drop and Uncharted 2 more people are getting enlightened.

Sony make claims about what their console can do and are harrassed over it by the gaming media. People make claims about what the 360 can do, including MS too. Here's the difference though, Sony have backed their claims up with games that are technically beyond anything else on the console market.

Yes the original KZ2 trailer was CGI but guess what, the actual gameplay turned out to look just like that trailer. That is why when I see TV commercials for the likes of Killzone 2 and inFAMOUS on TV there are messages at the bottom of the screen that actually says "Actual gameplay footage" or "all footage shot in game" in the case of inFAMOUS.

When the Gears of War 2 commercials were showing on TV here in the UK, it wasn't actual gameplay, it was a pre-rendered video with the message "graphics representative of gameplay" - the TV ad for Forza 3 that is running on TV in the UK right now is exactly the same.

Everyone has to admit that we've been playing basically the same Mario experience for decades with just a new trick here and there. And that's great. I know what I want and expect from a Mario title.

Mario's last huge "improvement" was going 3D (though I'll say that the real improvement is going back to 2D for the latest DS and Wii games. And old-school VC Mario game FTW!)

But every new Mario game that comes out is insta-classic status with the same old game play.

The same can be said for Link and Halo.

Heck, ODST's great new feature was ripped off from Gears and it still got 9's.

Sony has to put out a near-perfect game to get an 8.9. and has to perform miracles to break into 9 status.

It's pretty amazing to witness this phenomenon.

I actually heard that this happens because, Sony got a little too big for their britches winning the last two console wars. Without any competition, Sony grew so big that they could treat people any way that they wanted.

So there was a concerted effort by media, devs, and publishers alike to even out the playing field. This way Sony wouldn't be the sole dictator calling all of the shots.

Whats funny to me is that I've seen lots of the "we are ODST" commercials and not one frame of gameplay. Same thing happened with Halo Wars and MS got a pass. Sony shows gameplay, gameplay, gameplay in it's commercials, especially this new ad campaign. It's interesting how Sony's games look so good that they are compared to movies and CGI when it's the harder system to program for and has been on the market for a year less than the 360.

The first thing that should make your ears stands up is how developers on the 360 are claiming the X-Engine "can" "match" PS3 exclusives. How the hell is a console that says it's better than the PS3 and has been out longer, going into year 5, is only now talking about "matching" (not surpassing) what a console younger than it has been doing in essentially year 2.

We saw KZ2 in gameplay in yr 2 of the PS3 and it could have come out in Nov if not for tight scheduling with Resistance2 and MS developers are telling you 'wait, it is "possible" to do KZ2, UC2 type graphics in yr5 of the 360..but only with this Engine"

That's complete BS. Games on the 360 will look better in 2010 because.. IT"S 2010! They're supposed to look better. Halo Reach will look better cause... it's out in 2010! Halo Reach will look no better than Bioshock, MW or Splinter Cell (all multiplat games) but because it'll look miles better than any Halo game to date, it will be touted by it's fans as even better than KZ7.

But all others will see it for what it is, a halo game that finally looks like current gen material graphically but nothing we've not seen from many other multiplatform games. They'll throw out some tech mumbo jumbo word about techniques they used with the game like they do with - "FORGE!" (gimped map editor) or "FIREFIGHT!" (co-op mode done by other games already) or "TIRE DEFLEXING" or "DEFINITIVE" just some random buzz word and Halo fans will lose their minds.

They'll all go out, even pay $100 for online to make sure they get the "full online experience" of Halo Reach & it'll get it's usual helpings of 11/10s from all NA media outlets but at the end of the day, gamers outside the Halo aura will see the 360 games in 2010 & beyond for what they are - better looking games on the 360 from previous years.

If MS's 360 could do Uncharted, Infamous, KZ2, MGS4 type graphics they would have long ago and not touting that they're going to likely do what the PS3 is doing... soon. Sounds exactly like a ploy to just keep it's base engaged in the product.

Sounds like its a new toolset/devkit to enable more efficient use of memory an thread managment, alternitivly it could be a redone xbox os with a much smaller footprint

if its the first there will be some growth from using it but not huge leaps and bounds, ie dont expect ps2-360 style graphics jumps

Well first off I would like to say that if the X-Engine works out for them then that is a good thing for MS. This is coming from a Sony fan.

However, MS would have to buy more studios to fill the void left by the ones they got rid of. That and they would have to shell out more money just to get 3rd party developers to make an exclusive because the PS3 is gaining ground in systems sold. If the 360 comes out with a game that matches U2 on all fronts then more than likely it will be made by a 3rd party. I honestly don't think that will happen because if the system is so easy to program for, and it has a year head start, why hasn't a game came out for the 360 that has matched KZ2 or U2??

Lastly, I don't believe that Microsoft has enough creativity to match PS3 exclusives. What makes them so impressive is the story, characters, and the overall presentation. Every exclusive I have played have rivaled a movie when it comes to how the game was produced. The production value is something that most of us seem to overlook. The story is just as important as the graphics and game play. That is why FF7 doesn't necessarily need to be remade.

You can give a painter the best equipment out there but it means nothing without imagination.

MS don't need many first party studios...Sony have about 20 o them and they all get no profit for Sony now...Insomniac is looking to lost exclusivity...and after X-engine will be showen many other devs will speck open about that too. X-engine and xbox brand, next xbox are the future for earning money.

imad is correct about one thing. MS knows how to get your money. It doesn't involve quality or game value, it's advertising. They have proved that with Natal, their version of the PS2 Eyetoy. The difference being the Eyetoy has actually demonstrated it's gameplay and not resorted to smoke and mirrors.

From the beginning MS stated they would win the console war by being first to market. That was their mantra. Sony stated the PS3 would win by offering superior technology and gaming. As a gamer it isn't difficult to pick the platform that is about getting the most game for your time.

Demon5500 has been talking up the alleged specs of the 360 and preaching the X-Engine like it's the second coming of Raptor Jesus.

the only thing ms got right this gen was live, but then you have to pay for it anyway, and to keep up with what ps3 will be doing you'll have to spend out again for a "720", and when ps4 comes out it will look weak in comparison. ps4 with have scalled up specs from ps3, based on some form of cell or multi-cell so the learning curve will not be so great for devs to get used to it, even 3rd party devs will be up to scratch by then, and i doubt it will be so expensive in comparison to ps3 launcg price either as the cost of blu-ray eing new tech will not be there.

No, it will do deferred rendering, tessellation, virtualize memory, stream from (non existent) HDDs. And all that, while double the polycount and max out the three cores. Now they can do one scalar, SP and VMX instruction at the same time - on all three cores (it's magic!). What's more, the CPU isn't even needed in most cases, because they figured out to offload most of the crunching tasks into the GPUs "intelligent memory", the EDRAM. And all that was already there from the beginning. MS was holding back, that's why it took them almost 5 years to come up with it - even though they control DirectX. Sensational. What the hell is a X-engine??????? I never hear about this type of engine in almost 5 years and suddenly they talk about the X-engine.
The 360 is already tot max, even they use the so-called X-engine.

It's not about the engine that first party developers use, it's the power from the hardware itself, and that the PS3 has more power twice the 360 so called X-engine will never get the quality what the PS3 has to offer.

Here is why I disagree! Any bigger engine will scientifically require more memory to run. You will only be limited so much only having a 8 GIG DVD ROM. You can scream X-Engine all day but then I can scream the Z engine all night. Lastly, game designers today and tomorrow is more focused on parallel processing VS single core. That means, having 6-8 processors running simultaneously........... The 360 is old hardware that is pass its time. 360 should focus on just creating good games. You don't necessarily need more graphics to make a good game! God Of War & Shadow Of Colossus are games that came out LATE in the PS2 cycle that were just great games! 360 should focus on that. But in reality 360 is going to focus on the Wii market.

All this could be used to create a kernel which makes a CELL a "virtual multicore" if you'd wish. In most cases load/store into/from SDRAM is optimized to maximize SDRAM and DMA bandwidth - which would be hard to achieve with a generic "virtual" kernel (or maybe something like this does exist now - I don't know). The strength of the SPU ISA is SIMD operations and arithmetic, it is not utilized properly in scalar code which performs a lot of branching (if/else and loops, etc). Algorithms however can resolve most of those issues (e.g. loop unrolling, etc).

But it's more than just 7 SPU's what about the RSX and 256 XDR RAM, without it it was nearly imposable to get the Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2.
The RSX is also a very powerful chip,has more power than a gimped Ati PC card.

Remember, the most RSX test was running on PC architecture and not of the Cell architecture that's why the RSX loss the battle with the Xenos. It was unfair test for the RSX.

The cell and the RSX are the calculations, the SPU's are the servers from those chips and the 256 XDR RAM are the super highway from both SPU/CELL and RSX and finely the MONSTER in a black box :)

Listen everyone........ Here is why BLU-RAY makes the PS3 the clear winner for the rest of the console life cycle. It's purely because newer bigger game engines require more memory. Period! As newer games comes out and newer game engines are developed they will require more memory off of the disk...........Killzone 2 engine is a HUGE engine. You have to have Blu-Ray! Otherwise you will be forced to compressing the game down to a size that wouldn't make the game for what its intended for. Game developers cannot afford to make games on 2-3 separate disk unless it is funded by Microsoft. FF13 was funded by Microsoft and that is why you will see it on 3 different disk and I bet-ya the game textures won't look as polished as PS3's.

The X-engine are a set of tools made by microsoft.
Those tools are made specifically for the 360 just like sony has made the edge tools. Its a way for devs to make games with.

Microsoft send out this E3 the 1gb ram SDK for devs.
This is interesting because the SDK first only had 512mb as much as the 360 has. But devs needed to run debug programs on it and those took in from as low as 30mb of ram to as high as 100mb of ram.

The X-engine, huh. So that's the Great White Hype. The one and only engine that can do it. As if Guerilla's engine isn't going to improve as well as all Sony engines. See here are the keys - the Cell was designed with HD in mind and Bluray holds the HD. I don't think graphics have been the problem. What the 360 hasn't done is release 3 or 4 disc games enough. Killzone 2 looks great, but a big part of why is because of the bluray. The PS3 is and always was meant to provide HD. The 360 was simply out to beat Sony to market and wasn't really trying to embrace HD. The 360 didn't even release with HDMI. It uses DVD discs (I mean seriously, HD-DVD discs were available and how much more obvious can you get). The only thing MS seems to have done right is pick the good graphics, but just because technically they have the newer shaders, it doesn't translate to the real world without everything else they went half ass on.

with such small amount of space compared to a pc or bluray, you have to compress the images to fit on the disc, and no matter how great the compression is, you will always lose quality on it, take a raw image file compared to a jpeg, raw is a purely uncompressed file with amazing colours and sharpness yet at the same time the picture is anywhere from 30 megs upwards, when you compress it down to jpeg you lose a huge amount of quality yet the file is now at a much more sane 100kb, its the same way with games, textures have to be compressed and lose the valuable quality feel of it

While there are small improvements and memory bandwidth improvements, games are still limited to DVD capacity limit and hardware is based on an old PC architecture. at leasr to me it is. In the next 2 years we will have 2 new consoles: Xbox 3 and Wii2. While PS3 will still be around and devs will most likely finally will have mastered the PS3 technology by then.

If I was MS I would focus on a new console, and if I wasn't making a new console focus on Natal as much as possible. Next year will be year 5 for 360 and that is usually when console cycles end. MS needs Natal to extend 360 shelf life and that is a basic as I can make it.

With Wii2 coming around 2011, it should be significantly stronger than 360 and on par with PS3,so MS having a strong foothold with Natal is a must.

PS3 should still be going strong by 2011 and should see overall console sales around 40 million by then. If not they will need to really evaluate what plan of attack they want to continue with.

Check this out though similiar to the edge engine utilized in the ps3 dev tool set look at how these games enhanced so much, but also look at how multi plat games on ps3 are performing now since the addition of these new tools. Killzone 2 was enhanced utilizing the edge tool set for ps3 devs.

2. xbox360 had a rough year in terms of reaching that milestone in game quality, that we're seeing in ps3 titles but 2010 already looks night and day in comparison and the same effect that gears of war had on gamers prepare to be blown away in 2010 with the xbox360.

Unreal Engine doesn't even get the most out of the 360 yet it's the most used engine on the platform so that means with the addition of this tool set/x-engine it should allow for memory to be used in games, better testing for games before their released, and a better and easier development process for the games coming out.

Lets say Sony and MS are quarter mile runners, two champion sprinters. The only difference is that Sony is a slightly better runner than MS. They are both good enough to make it to the Olympics, but only one can win. So when the gun goes off, MS takes of running, haulin azz, but Sony trips up and falls. For a while it looks this deficit means Sony’s doom , but lo and behold, the superior conditioning of Sony starts to pay off. Ms will continue to put out quality games, but Sony will continue to advance on them by degrees. The xbox is capbale of handling all ps3 exclusives I bet smoother. I think because the PS3 was released late and there was talk about the cell sony wanted to be known as the console with the best graphics. In reality it isn't. Uncharted and killzone basicaly maxed out the system because the game was supported by Sony to have the best graphics so they made use of blu_ray, Edge tools, no split-screen, 1GB dev kit. Microsoft said that future games will surpass ps3 excluives. Halo reach is sure to prove that the 360 is really more powerful.

An 'xengine' is a great idea. If the ps3 had been designed for gaming then they wouldn't have had to pool their best talent together to make the engine that their best stuff seems to come from. Currently there's no 'real' dedicated engine for the 360. With talented bods involved it should be very interesting if the rumours are true.

Considering how good gears2 looks on an essentially ported engine, something custom built from the ground up will drop jaws. Added to Natal and the best online infrastructure on consoles and you'll get a relaunch.

The idea that MS 'took a year off' to prep for a much bigger 2010 does resonate somewhat. Especially if they knew that Sony were going to put out some really big hitters that were best avoided rather than competed with. It's not going to be a bad year by any stretch, 2 halo titles, increased Live functionality, mw2, AC2, L4D2. They just don't need to cram it into this year if they've got all that lot already working for them.

Sometimes it's best just to duck when the opposition fires a salvo, and wait for a better opportunity to fire better-prepped guns.

Also, I'm not following you on your theory question regarding Sony having their best guys make the most used engine? Why wouldn't the best developer/programers make the best stuff for the system that has cost them a billion or so dollars?

dont see it happening because simple thing, the xbox liek every developer said before " xbox 360 is easier to make games than in the ps3" so that doest let much to unlock of this extreme capacity your talking about. now ps3 released edge cause ps3 development was hard a bit slow to reach wht it had to reach hence the bad multiplats at first, but now they got the kit to boost that up and reach it to its potential. Second problem, its a halo game, again..... its getting tired and wasted like hell if microsoft keeps pushing on it, this is MS prob they annouce games that only sell they never announce other exclusive as frequent, gears is out i see it like a million times on tv, same as halo, left 4 dead saw it once, splintercell once mass effect never saw it..... so just saying xbox 360 just interested on those that sell the best, which there are more decent games around other than halo and gears....i can accept gears, but halo just getting annoying... so in terms of potential getting it out of the 360 i doubt its not going to be like ALOT its gooing to be like mainly on hwo long the game will be out

I think the sega master system is a great platform
for all the devs can use, in terms of quality games.
Sony and MS will have a field day. The turbo graphic
16 is a great system too, it uses blur motion technology
