Quality of Current Console Games - PS3 Leads

Often you will hear from gamers from one console group or the other "Your system has no quality games". In the last 6 months this has been true for owners of PS3, we hear it all the time. SPG has set out to investigate these claims.

Of all current consoles the PS3 has the highest percentage of games rated over 80%.
Of all current consoles the X360 has the lowest percentage of games rated under 50%.
The Wii has the lowest percentage of games over 80% and the most under 50% of any console.
The PSP has the highest percentage of games over 80% and the lowest percentage under 50%.

just got to say my bit here, the Xbox 360 has been out longer thus the larger ammount of games, but what you have to remember about this is, MS wants to be a success, thus the Xbox 360 needs to address more people then just the serious gamers, otherwise i can say games like Viva Pin whatever its called wouldnt be there, i know i havnt played the demo, and i wont buy it as i dont want to play kid games, and this is a key example as its one of those games available and it probadly does have a cr@p rating.

What this article really says is that 360 has 38 more games above an 80% average than PS3 does. How is that good news for PS3?

For example- If Sony only had one game out, and that one game was rated 80%, that would make it the best console ever in the whole world? What sense would that make?

Add in Wii, and you've got a killer argument for mass appeal. Say if you owned a video game company and a gaming console just launched. Would you risk making games for the console so early in its lifecycle, unless you were entirely sure that your game would stand out and be a must buy? Obviously you wouldn't. The same applies to Sony and the games made for the platform. Many of the PS3 games that have come out so far are somewhat above average because their developers knew they'd sell or have enough money to take the risk. As time passes by and the install base becomes larger, developers will be more willing to take risks because enough people will buy the game as long as it's above averagely rated.

Now this clearly wouldn't apply to first-party titles.

I am not sure any arcade game should ever get a rating over 80%. I mean they are cheap little games that dont take up much space so they wont have the next gen graphics or sound or a lot of very detailed long gameplay.

Also a great number of these games are cross platform. So if I had a PS3 right this second there is only about 1 maybe 2 other games I would own then what I own right now.

the quality of games is a very subjective attribute. It doesnt reflex the quality or the performance of a console, depending only on devs efforts. So charts doesnt show anything but statistics. Using the same data every one (as it was shown above) can build up another chart with quite opposite conclusions.
Anyway the quantity of games shows nothing too. How many games on X360 are worth playing? Fingers on one hand are enough to count them all.
Now there is no game on PS3 to make a true comparison. Lets do in in July when a few real Ps3 exclusives are released. As far as I remeber the first real good titles for Ps2 appeared at shelves after a year from its release. The history goes in cicles.

Of course it's true, but it's not that impressive. I rather have 100 good games and a million shiitty ones, than 5 good games and 5 shiitty ones (that's comparing ration versus ratio).

What's important here is who gets the most good titles. If you get the most good titles, it won't really matter if you have a bad "ratio" of games. Hell, PS2 probably had the worst good to shiitty title ratio compared to Xbox and Gamecube; after all, it was easier to make money with a shiitty title on PS2 than on GC or Xbox. But PS2 won because its amount of good titles was huge, and not only that, but it was diverse.

In conclusion:

1. Ratios don't matter

2. Quantity of quality titles matters

3. Quantity of quality lacking titles doesn't matter as long as point (2) applies.

4. Diversity is also important: If Xbox 360 gets 500 good titles, and PS3 only gets 200 good titles, it doesn't mean Xbox 360 has won already. If its line-up is not diverse enough (as in having mostly good games for the hardcore, as in mostly FPS), it won't matter. If the PS3 has an equal distribution of good titles among every genre for every gamer out there available (for every different genre lover, RPG, Action, Adventure, Fighting, Strategy, FPS, RTS, User created content, music, webcam, for the hardcore, the casual, the average, the non-gamer, the new gamer, old people, kids, teens, young adults, women, and so on), then 360 will not beat it if it has 90% of the good titles devoted to a single group.

The Wii also needs more diversity, you know.

Statistics can be deceiving. Hypothetically, if a console releases two games in a year, and one of them scores above 80%, then that means 50% of the games scored 80% or greater.

That is basically what whoever wrote this article is doing to try to make themselves feel better about buying a PS3 instead of a 360. While the PS3 may have a better PERCENTAGE of games rated above an 80%, the 360 has MORE games rated above an 80% period.

By the way, of the PS3 games rated above an 80%, how many are exclusives? I'm willing to bet BioShock, Mass Effect, Too Human and Halo 3 will all be at least 80, maybe 90% or greater.

fact is firmware update 1.80 has given PS3's RGB full output. Once you see this on a 1080p display you will know right then and there it is game over for the scratchbox. Go to {Display setting} and enable a new setting called (RGB full range) (hdmi) to Full... Also their is a new (super-white) (HDMI) setting turn that ON also.

My review on this wonderful new settings.

After turning my RGB to full I was blown away on how much more PQ/contrast I got out of my LCD TV set. After some tv calibration, I turned off all the lights in my living room and let the magic begin, started two different titles 1st was SD DVD Training Day, amazing jump in pq, #2 titles BD dvd The Departed... Not only did my blacks get absolute black on both titles but the contract improved greatly with out crushing. I have been up all night playing around with my ps3 testing out different settings I have to say by far this upscaling update makes the ps3 worth ever cent and it will go down in history for setting a standard for home media devices. Best upscaling on the market this whole system is ahead of its time the market hasnt even caught up yet. If i was sony I wouldnt be doing any price drops until next year the system is worth the price. I find it really hard for anyone to find fault with the ps3 now. Yeah yeah yeah but what about games, Their are games for the ps3 so enough of that non-sence. This system at this point in time is by fair the best media player ever created. Blackest I have ever seen a LCD get its just amazing, truley black no more grey.

Upscaling 1080p on ps1/ps2 games is wicked. I poped in GOD of War 2, Shadows of colossus, Kingdom hearts2, RE4 and went Old school with some chronos cross, I coudlnt find a jaggy if I tried. The games where smooth as a babyies bottom. It made me wish I could have played them orginally like that. I didnt think sony could do it but dayum they shut me up. This update makes me want to hunt down all those ps2 games I might have missed or maybe not have finished and start all over again. This update will hold me until the block buster games come out.

After this update i can shamefully apologize for ever saying anything negative about the ps3 ,sony Hats off to you. I will not ever bash one of your products ever again.

in case you need it explained to you, Microshaft's latest offering the "Elite" is already obsolete as MS once again took the cheap route and only included an HDMI 1.2 port. I believe this to be true since the 360 has more games a higher percentage of those can be crap while the PS3 being new doesn't have that many games out yet third party will only risk bringing out there better games now until more systems are sold. 2) What are the sources of the samples? i.e Was it all Sony sites, more Sony sites, less Sony site etc. Who employs the people on these sites and what are their motives?

when you go to buy the games, percentages don't matter, it is the quantity of the titles that are great that matters - and 360 has nearly 4 times more.

It's true, beleive it not folks. Big corporations don't really give a sh1t about individual consumers. They care about profits- end of story. So it is pretty stupid to blindly stick by a console.

I just won't buy a PS3 until some great games come out and make it worth a buy. Other than that PS3 is a great peice of hardware, but I'll keep enjoying Gears, the Beta, and many other great games on my 360 on XBL which is one of the greatest things ever, even if it does cost money, it's worth it.

Xbox 360 has 55 games (out of 200 total) that are rated 80% and above
PS3 has has 14 games (out of 45 total) that are rated 80% and above
Wii has 5 games (out of 61 total) that are rated 80% and above

As consumers, do you make buying decisions based on the actual numbers or percentages?

I don't know about you, but I would go for the system that has 55 good games, not the one that has only 14 good games but a "higher percentage of good games" because it just has a much smaller library.
