Can "The Dark Knight" save Blu-ray?

Nine years ago, the DVD of "The Matrix" shattered records and catapulted the budding DVD format into the mainstream. Can "The Dark Knight" do the same thing for Blu-ray?
The Blu-ray release of "The Dark Knight" is slated to Dec. 9, and as Video Business [via High-Def Digest] reports, Warner Brothers has more than a million Blu-ray copies of the Batman blockbuster teed up for retailers-reportedly, the most ever for a Blu-ray movie to date.

Indeed, "The Dark Knight" is perhaps the biggest gotta-have Blu-ray title yet, bigger even than "Iron Man" (which has sold about 500,000 Blu-ray copies so far, according to Video Business) and "Transformers."

But here's the big question: Will the popularity of "TDK" translate into a tipping point for Blu-ray, as "The Matrix" (which was the first DVD to ship more than 1.5 million units back in 1999) did for DVD?

Blu-ray doesn't need saving and the format has done well so far.

Just this week I saw a Wal-mart T.V. commercial and they were advertising Blu-ray players and Blu-ray DVD's. If Walmart starts pushing Blu-ray, then I'm sure some people will be getting into Blu-ray if they haven't already.

The Dark Knight is this years biggest movie and I'm sure it will shatter Blu-ray sales records... if The Dark Knight can't get more people into Blu-ray, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy coming Blu-ray next year sure will.

Comparing a blu-ray to DVD is stupid. Its like the leap from VHS to DVD. If you have the right cables, tv, player, and movie, the results are more than worth it. Never thought I would be excited to be able to see individual pores on a guys face but it is awesome.

Just so you know, The Fall is a great example of a movie that is just made for Blu-Ray. Not a great story line but the visuals are top notch. Especially the beginning where you can see individual drops of water glittering in the sun light. Might as well been an ad for blu-ray or HD tvs.

I'm a movie freak and an electronic freak to but i never bought a br player and i'm not going to.I have a 60in 180p 24 tv.A 5.1 polk surround sound system.Dtv with hd programming.Don't get me wrong i hope that the people that have it will enjoy them and i wish them all the luck.

People keep bringing up that Br is selling better then DVDs were at this time.I'm not going to say it's not true because i don't know and it might be true.The fact is that DVDs were makeing money at this time and BR is still looseing money at this time.

We sure didn't, as we predicted sales to be down more than 1.26 percent, on this week's Nielsen VideoScan chart courtesy of Home Media Magazine. Thanks to the Hulk, Blu-ray managed to net $17.71 million this week, which makes October the biggest month in history. In fact, consumers spent $76.86 million in October alone, which is more than all of August and September combined -- it will be very interesting to see if Blu-ray can keep this up through the last two months of the year though. I think blu-ray is the next big thing and it's going to do very well.

But I have problems convincing my wife that it's worth it. She's not a big "tech" person and just thinks that blu-ray movies are too expensive compared to DVD.

I try to explain that they really aren't that much more expensive and the picture is much better, but she doesn't care.

She went to Circuit City last night to grab some deals and bought 4 movies. Guess what format? Yep, DVD. I asked her why she didn't buy them on blu-ray and she said "I'm not spending $40.00 for the same movie."

I told her that they aren't $40.00 but (like me) she can be stubborn at times.

If she has this mindset, I'm sure MANY, MANY others do too. They just need to continue to get the price of them down.

I've seen single movies go up to 47euro (simpsons and pirates of the carribean) and there is no way i'll pay that for a film. However if I see a movie I like for a reasonable price I'll buy it, they arent all expensive. I've only bought 7 BDs but if they were reasonably priced I'd have a lot more. It was a stand at the front of the store full of awesome titles in the $17-$20 range. For me that is the sweet spot. I know you can get them cheap online but being able to waltz into a store and pick up Departed for pocket change is what I have been waiting for. I had to buy Sleeping Beauty for my daughter so I went for the B-ray.

Compared to Blu-ray, it's still cheaper by leaps and bounds, and the drop in quality between movies on the two formats may be pretty big, but DVD still looks a hell of a lot better than VHS.

Plus you can get DVD players for as cheap as $35...

It would take Blu-ray players at a price similar, as well as the HDTVs to hook them up to in order to force DVD into a permanent retirement.

On the other hand, Blu-ray players can still play DVDs, right? So you don't have to give up your DVD collection at all, and you have the option to buy a format with better piicture and sound quality, if you so choose...

I'm a proponent of DD and that's why I think Blu-Ray won't catch up to DVD. DD is already starting to get big. By the time Blu-Ray starts making inroads into homes, people will have already started switching to DD. I can't see the whole world switching to a new disk format with DD on the horizon. Blu-ray doesn't need to saved. Blu-ray players can now be found for $200 new. Amazon even has a holiday deal where you can get a Blu-ray player and four Blu-ray discs for about $170 buck! Plus almost every new release is available on Blu-ray. They just need to lower the price of each movie from $25-29 to like $19.99

This is what I've been telling anyone willing to listen. You're allowed to purchase and enjoy blu and still own and favor the 360. BTW, check out Panasonic's BD55 and/or little cousin BD35. The 55 can output 7.1 but is a little pricier at $399. The 35 is a little more affordable at $299 and both support BDlive. If either is on sale black friday, grab one if you don't want a PS3.

I don't know the overall health of Blu-Ray, but it must be doing fine considering all of the title that I see in stores. There's probably ten times the shelf space in the stores I visit allocated to Blu-Ray than there was a year ago. You can get classic titles at places like WalMart for $15.

I'm probably in the minority, but I didn't think that Dark Knight was the movie to end all movies. It was good, but I think that there are much better movies out there. I think the thing that's going to be the tipping point for Blu-Ray acceptance is to get the price of new releases down so that they don't cost twice as much (or more) than DVD.

This author says that it was The Matrix that put DVD over the top, but I think it was when new DVD releases started costing less than $20. Right now it's tough to justify the price of the Blu-Ray version when DVD still looks decent and people are already used to it. Get the prices down and you'll see a lot more people buying them.

500,000 copies of Iron-Man Blu-Ray?! To be honest, that is a very low number. Blu-Ray is the only way to watch HD movies. Now Blu-Ray players are going down, but alot of people still won't pay $30.00 for a movie. You have millions of DVD's going for 50%-80% cheaper than Blu-Ray. There is alot of Blu-Ray movies I do not seeing myself paying $24-$30 for. The problem now is Blu-Ray movies need a price cut. Especially with this weak economy.

And The Dark Knight is a classic/must-have, more than (almost) any other blu-ray out to date. I think the price will drop during the first quarter of '09, maybe to $20-$25. Despite what they say about blu-ray's manufacturing cost, I think they charge what they charge for it now ($35) so when the price does drop, it will be a nice and slow drop. Don't expect $20 blu-rays until mid-2010, and that's only if DVD's are close to being obsolescent by then.

Oh, and 'something' only needs saving when it's headed for destruction. Not so with Blu-Ray.

it's bad enough i've seen my fair share of comments across the net of many Republican's bemoaning McCain losing, but now i get to come to N4G and see another sour grapes article about Blu Ray needing "saving" (chances are, written by an HD DVD supporter), when the format's sales have been GROWING, and at a faster pace than DVD.

bottom line:

television signals are going digital next February.
HDTV prices are dropping as low as $400 for 32" sets after Thanksgiving this year.
if people who have bought HDTVs did so to get digital TELEVISION, why wouldn't they want their MOVIES to be in HD as well?

and when it comes to the option of HD movies to show off your new HD set, WHERE are you going to go? only ONE format survived, and it ain't HD DVD.

...but in my mind, the reason DVD was able to enter the market and be accepted so quickly was because there was a significant difference between the previous leading format (VHS). It was digital rather than analogue, you were able to skip to scene points rather than rewind/fast-forward, you could add additional material to the disc and even over the movie itself (commentaries). With all these advantages, DVD was welcomed.

Blu-Ray brings high-def. That's it. It brings a slighty better picture. A lot of people seem to over-exaggerate this fact, and dont' get me wrong, I do think Blu-Ray looks amazing, but my DVD picture isn't such a step back that I'd purchase a BR player.

In my humble opinion, the introduction of Blu-Ray / HD-DVD has come too soon, with not enough differentiation from the previous format (DVD), and as long as that remains true, consumers will buy the cheaper option. Why buy one Blu-Ray for £20 when I can get three DVDs for the smae price? I imagine in a few years time another format is going to appear that has a significant edge over DVD. As cinema moves towards IMAX and 3D, I would suggest that the age of 3DTV, and a format to support it, is coming within the next decade.

I can see where you are coming from but I can't agree regarding your opinion.
Blu-ray is a step forward, maybe not in the same sense as DVD with the scenes and jumping to certain points but it is still a welcomed much improved format.
The picture is more than slightly better, its far better than you're willing to accept. Normal SD TV's and DVD's look blurry and you can tell where the detail is poor compared to BR.
It isn't just the picture having lots more detail from 640x480 to 1920x1080, its the colours available, the audio and overall the presentation.

Not everyone jumped on the DVD wagon straight away but eventually people moved over, just as HD will make the same transition.

These 'save blu-ray' (like it needs saving considering it is growing by the numbers everyday) and digital downloads are just marketing propaganda trying to knock it before it catches hold fully.

I've not bought a single DVD for over a year now and I will never do so again. Just like I won't be going back to my PS2 or Xbox.

... i agree with you that the original article is silly in that BR has carved itself an audience, primarily because of the PS3, but not entirely. Therte are people, like you say, who love new tech and jump on the bandwagon.

But for the rest of us who are watching our savings at the moment, or even those who just like to enjoy a film from the couch rather than with out noses pressed against the screen, it will always be a matter of money.

As for the much improved picture, it's great if you have a big enough HDTV (really, I've seen it and yes I exclaimed too) but the difference is not as vast as people make out. I do not see BR as the next step in home media - its an improved version of DVD. It offers no new innovations as DVD did before it. I'm viewing BR as a stepping stone to something else, and I'd rather stick with DVDs until the next big leap comes along.

Off topic...was at target last night and passed the bluray kiosk with a demo video showing off some movies. It was also playing marketing info like "Without bluray, your hdtv is really just...tv".

I can add to that: "Without HDTV your bluray is really just....DVD". You see the connection? While you can watch dvd's on regular tv's or hdtv's in upscaled quality. You can't really do the same the other way around. You NEED HDTV to watch bluray so until I can replace all my tv's and players with HDTV's and blu players. I am sticking to getting DVD's. The Dark Knight will be a welcome addition....to my DVD collection.

HDTV's offer more in every aspect compared to SDTV. Sound, colour, brightness, sharpness and bigger sizes. Then there is the energy side with less power usage, less bulk and better looking.
Now we have the sensible reasons why people should come and join the 'next stage' club. Those who can afford it, have already got a HDTV and are enjoying them without looking back.

The costs of everything when they're new is more, thats always been the case with virtually anything. I don't complain about people using DVD but there seems to be some bitterness out there to people who have moved to Blu-ray and HD. Why? Sounds like jealousy but I feel it is more to do with stubbornness to change.

Each to their own I guess and I wouldn't expect Blu-ray to take over DVD sales just yet but eventually it might. The present credit problems globally will slow it down slightly but I wouldn't say DVD will be as popular when BR players cost the same price in the future.

What I DON'T want to see is bluray becoming a dumping ground for every movie ever made like DVD has become. Granted, there were many significant changes that went along with going from magnetic tape formats to optical disc formats. A few examples would be in music you had tapes and CD's. The obvious pro's for CD's was the cleaner sound, easier navigation to the content on the disc as well as the promise of more storage.

The same things were made apparent when the change from VHS to DVD took place. Problem is there has been so much dumping of older content on the formats to simply add to the convenience. It is great that I can now pick up Miracle on 34th street on DVD but do we really need a blu version? You have to think that the HD quality of blu was really meant to accent the future of media. Not so much the past.

You can't really HD an old black and white movie unless you really want to accent the grain used in the original recording. DVD has done that already. If anything, blu should be used for all the newer releases from 2000 and up. I believe it was a few years ago that studios started shooting movies in a higher def format so it seems only right that those movies be made to take advantage of what blu can offer. Anything older is better suited for reguar DVD as you have to think of the source content and how it was originally created.

I like what blu has the potential of offering provided it is used correctly and not as a dumping ground for everything that should stay on DVD. I really hate buying CD's and DVD's only to find that the content could have been released on tape simply because of poor quality recording and no bonus material. I expect studios to take advantage of the capacity of these better optical formats (games included). If they don't offer anything more than what a regular disc can support, why buy the bigger better disc?

dvd they are like beta now and bluray will take dd downloads anytime cause bluray will be around for 10years like sony says and dd will fail to bluray

A BR will take time to saturate, i remember people saying I have all my movies on VHS I dont see the point in upgrading nor see that much of a difference other than you have menus

B Price, when you get BD at 99 dollar pumping out it wont seem like a big jump anymore it will seem just another box to replace an old clunky one.

C PS3 is to hard to program for, BR isnt needed dvds are fine, people arent good with change period, especailly on something that has been the standard for 10 yrs.

Its all about time, in the End BR will be fine and become the norm and PS3 Globally will out pace the 360 because of its fan base market branding etc....Just a matter of time
