They have positioned themselves very well to do so. Not saying they will, but they have a chance.

And @1.8 _ The pricedrop is significant because it puts the 360 at the mass market pricepoint of $200. What that means is that the system can now be a impulse buy instead of a luxury buy. And don't gimme that BS about value because the 360 does offer the best value for a casual gamer.

All casual's want is a system to play great games on. And the 360 has already proven they have GREAT games. They don't care about Blu-Ray players, storage, HD and all the other stuff us hardcore gamers care about. Hence why the Wii is so succesful. It has A LOT less then the 360 and yet is still the best selling system!

the Wii will eventually slow down and become less desirable as the Ps3's price drops.
The 360 is cheap as allready and it so far hasn't been selling all that amazingly ( like the wii ) and we all think that they're going to go and rush out their next console within a few years. Also people's perception ( I'm talking average joe's ) is that the Ps3 is desirable and the Xbox is just the Xbox.
When the Ps3's price is dropped more there'll be alot more people jumping on the wagon and even more still when it's dropped further over time, which is why Sony's 10 year plan is so genius. They can actually profit from this and whilst microsoft releases it's next product the Ps3 will be cheaper and still highly desirable with great graphics and fun games, with a great library.
Microsoft can't really the drop the price much lower than it is and Sony's got plenty of time to drop the price.

I expect a LOT of wii owners to make the jump once the price goes down on the Ps3.

It's possible, but I doubt it. During a lot of the months the PS3 barely outsold the 360, where other months crushed the 360.. And, with the new price point of $199, you have to put that into account and if it will increase sales for each month. And, I'm thinking that the 360 will have another price drop sometime in the close future.. They are already making profit for each console sold, unlike Sony.

But, I give it about 2inahalf - 3 years before Sony takes the lead.

-The Xbox 360 can't beat the PS3 and Wii this generation just by moving lots of units in America and There's no way a console can win a console war just by America alone.

-The only thing that will keep the 360 alive in Japan is The Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4. Once Final Fantasy XIII comes out in Japan for the PS3 next year, the Xbox 360 will literally become even more dead than it already is until some other big JRPG hits the 360 over there and there's no telling when that will happen.

-No Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360 in Japan equals another Xbox failure in Japan, it's as simple as that.... and lets not forget about Final Fantasy Versus XIII which is a PS3 exclusive Worldwide. Anyone that wants to play all of the Final Fantasy XIII games this Gen. will have to buy a Playstation 3 because FF Versus XIII is a PS3 exclusive! Some people tend to forget how important that is.

-The Xbox 360 has been cheaper than the Wii in Europe since March or April but the PS3 has still been outselling it over there, once the PS3 gets a price drop in Europe, the PS3 will be outselling the Xbox 360 by even larger margins than it is now in Europe.

-I have to be realistic here... right now I don't think that either the PS3 or 360 will catch up to the Wii because Nintendo's lead is so large and they have created a massive lead without even dropping the price on the Wii. Unless something drastic happens to the Wii's sales over the next year or so, I doubt either the PS3 or 360 will be able to cut into that lead significantly.

-The Xbox 360 pretty much only has America, but the PS3 has Europe, Japan, and America. With the PS3 having 3 territories it's doing relatively well in, I think it's only a matter of time before the PS3 overtakes the 360 in Worldwide sales.

2009 will be the judge. God of War 3, Killzone 2, and Some other big game I can't think of off the top of my head. They will judge Console Idol. Should KZ2 flop, It'll be close to done, for the PS3. If GOW3 flops its automatically dead.

Why is it the diehard claim they still have a launch unit, but own 2 or 3 XB's? Maybe thats why they have a launch unit. It sits in cotton wool perhaps while the others get played. Watch the Core Unit (you can call it arcade if you want, its still a core) takes off in sales. It will too. Sony did *not* drop the prices because they knew they had to desperately catch up with Microsoft. That is not a fact, but an opinion. Once again, spreading FUD because your console is losing. The PS3 *still* outsold the 360 despite being a very expensive console in 2007! Those pricecuts were done in order to lower the cost of production, not to desperately catch up with Microsoft.

Tell me, if Sony desperately cut the prices to catch up with Microsoft, then why is Microsoft slashing prices? Shouldn't that equal desperation as well? The PS3 outsold the 360 for five months in the United States and outsold the 360 worldwide. As of right now, the PS3 has a commanding lead over the 360 and that gap is going to get even narrower.

The PS3 is also starting to appeal to the casual market as well.

That's why Microsoft will lose this console war.

They focused too much on *beating* their competitors instead of being innovative and creative with their system. The RROD is still an inexcusable mess and until this day, people *still* receive the RROD.

Sony's entire strategy revolved around reducing the features of the ps3 and reducing its price so as to remain in the running. In fact, they probably would like to reduce the price of the ps3 again, but they simply cannot afford it!

can cut the PS3's price. They are fully capable. Will they lose money? Yes but they still have the Ps2 and the psp not like MS that just has 1 dead console(xbox). Either they make a price cut and risk losing money in order to stay on top of the xbox360, or they wait out the storm.

Sony's PS3 is a tough console. It's been through a rough year(2007) with hardly any good titles while the xbox360 had Halo 3, bioshock , and Mass effect. I'm sure this time Sony will pull it off ONCE AGAIN.

Juuken, I am posting my comment here instead of the comment section above because I can fit this in without it getting lost amongst the name calling posts.

It is common knowledge that sony took high amounts of criticism over the pricing model for their first two sku's. I am reminded of another high profile (priced) system from a few generations back. The 3DO. It was over $700 when it first came out and it was technically the only thing on the market in that range. Its power and performance was much much higher than the closest competitor and Panasonic kept trying to justify the high price with all the features it was supposedly capable of doing.

That high price didnt last long when they saw sales not going anywhere close to what they wanted to see. Sony was in the same situation. Relying on the PS name value and not taking into account the crowd they were targeting really hurt them at first.

The old argument of no games and marketing it as a movie player impacted sales and caused Sony to try and justify the high price with marketing spin on bluray with their inhouse studios obviously supporting it and courting a number of outside studios to support the format as well. From a movie division standpoint, it paid off as the format won. Speculation on how it won has been made to the argument that Sony made promises to these studios to the extent of using the PS brand name to sell movies thanks in part to the included bluray in the ps3.

Seeing as how the system as a whole was not moving at the pace the company expected, they opted to drop the 20gb sku to save them some mfg costs. At the same time they opted to lower the price of the bigger sku. Usually you dont drop the price of something within the first 6 months of its release unless there is a reason. We will never truly know what that reason is unless we can talk to the person who signed the executive order to make it happen. For it to get another price cut making it twice within the first year of release is unheard of in any previous generation of consoles.

If sony was so confident in the power and value of their product then wouldnt it seem likely they would stand behind their pricing structure even in the face of criticism? People will speculate all they want because it is easy to do so. MS has only lowered the price 2 times officially in the current lifespan of the system. Nintendo should have been the one to be first below the $200 mark due to the power to performance ratio of their system. Perhaps they will lower the wii in the coming months but it could be unlikely due to the still high demand.

MS is just trying to be competitive as was sony back in 07. The timing of a price drop as well as a secondary one with the same fiscal year is the oddity for sony. They make good products but I feel they went into this gen thinking people will pay whatever they are asking because it carries the name sony and playstation. Judging from the first year it looks like they were wrong. Things are turing around for them but they still need to evaluate the value of their system when it comes to gaming enjoyment.

No doubt they have a great movie player and I still see it as the cheaper model when compared to bluray only players but when it comes to the games part it is facing really threatening competition from MS on the core side and nintendo from the obvious casual side. MS took nintendos wii as a casual threat earlier on and is trying to regain momentum capitalizing on that. Sony just seems late to the party again but their approach looks intriguing with LBP.

Nintendo kept pushing the idea of how you play games.
MS didn't do anything to promote their console to the masses.
They only made some funny commercials but thats about it.
Nintendo actually went into the crowd and convinced this audience.

Ofcourse this will give ther 360 a boost but it will not defeat the Wii. It's the controller. Nintendo promoted a new way of playing games(console-wise). They captured the hearts of many, while MS thinks they can break into this audience with commercials( you don't see in the netherlands anymore btw) that hardly tell anything about the consoles to actually make it sell great.

Honestly, if we're talking about worldwide sales, I think that unless one console has an incredibly dramatic, unlikely rise or fall in sales, the results are fairly clear: Wii will lead by a significant margin, PS3 will take a solid second, and the 360 will take third (but still be a financial success).

If we are only considering American sales, the results will be closer between the 360 and PS3, but probably favor the PS3 (at least in the second half the the consoles' lifespan).

I don't think this will make any of the consoles a distinct failure. If the PS3 fails to sell as much as the Wii (and honestly that seems all but certain), that won't mean that the system has profoundly failed, because the system will have sold well within its target audience and price range and will have made important technical advancements. Likewise, even if the 360 is outsold worldwide by the PS3 (and it probably will be), it will still have made significant market gains on its predecessor and have helped to establish Microsoft as a full competitor in the console industry. The Wii, of course, will have helped Nintendo reclaim market share and rebrand itself as a competitive and innovative market force.

This isn't the old console war. There won't be a Dreamcast or a Saturn or a 3DO or a Jaguar to crash and burn this generation. In fact, there won't even be a minor failure like the GameCube. We finally have an industry that can support three systems simultaneously without casualties. I think this is more cause for celebration than concern.

When sony released the ps2 it was coming into the market against the dreamcast. Sega had made some mistakes with previous systems and had done a pretty good job of turning things around with the dc.

Sony fans let it slip by while they waited for the ps2 and there is one thing that is true about people in general. If you want something and are willing to wait for it, nothing can change their mind. DC was cheapest system of that gen even when you factor in the GC and the xbox. It bowed out because it just couldnt get gamers to see the good aspects of it. People did to it what they are doing now and have always done. Downplay the competition and force their hand to exit the game.

Gamers are doing that now but it is an interesting observation. I have seen 360 gamers act a bit more mature in the sense that they arent really trying to downplay the ps3. They know it is a competent system and the real thing most commented on by 360 gamers is how a system like the 360 can go toe to toe with the might sony legacy. Think back to those golden days of the genesis vs snes and even though the genesis was inferior to the snes, it was able to make lots of peopls heads turn and question the real value of one over the other.

Sony fans are just as diehard to their platform as any other fan but they do it in a more direct ridiculing manner. When I see comments from them they are really focused at the obvious attention getters like the RROD and the lack of 1st party studios for MS to combat sony's lineup. Lest they forget that it wasnt always like this for sony. They had to start somewhere and didnt get to where they are now without being in a similar boat that MS is in now.

Regardless of personal feelings towards one companies business model or the other you have to admit that the MS 360 as become a viable threat to the PS3 and Sony's legacy. Much like the Seaga and the genesis was a threat to Nintendo. You have to give them credit for really putting up a fight this time and it can only serve to make all parties be more on their toes for the next round.

I can say this, I dont think I have seen a more vocal generation of consoles duking it out for respect. Sony fans need to see that the 360 deserves respect for making sony be more aware of the threat they impose and wanting to be a better comapny. MS fans should do the same. Nintendo fans are just glad to see the company that basically helped make way for the ps3 and 360 is on top of a market after all this time. Comebacks are rare but we are seeing one of epic proportions and for them to screw it up all over again would truly deem them gone from the business forever.

I love that after all this time, many staill have not been able to comprehend the appeal of the Wii. This writer thinks the 360 arcade will take sales from Wii as gamers will upgrade for better graphics but they don't care, the Wii appeals as it is cute, fun and not an xbox or Playstation. Neither console will be able to take sales from the Wii based on games alone; offering different experiences (like Little Big Planet) and multimedia features will be the way to do it. And price is not as important as you would think, recession is good for games as £250-£300 for a console is a 5 year investment in whole home entertainment that will see games sales remain high.

I read the comments on this site quite often and having owned a PS3, Wii and 360, i find it utterly bewildering what 'gaming' has descended into, a bunch of whiny kids trashing on whatever console they don't 'support'. Anyway, back on topic, I have had 3 Xboxs red ring on me, so a few months back i thought I would give the PS3 a try.

I picked it up with MGS4, GT prologue and uncharted plus the dual shock 3 (£40 wtf?). First impressions were mixed, MGS4 is undoubtedly a decent game but GT5 and uncharted I found to be more like tech demos. since then I have bought several more games, resistance and heavenly sword amongst other, resistance in my eyes is diabolical, people comparing this positively to halo 3 either haven't played halo 3 or are just acting in the regular fanboy manner (in most cases the latter i would guess), I know games are coming for PS3, but in terms of games now, 360 wins. But in this industry, like many others, the brand name if what often sells a product, make of that what you will, but i feel the point is clear.

In my eyes, the PS3 is struggling with software related issues, such as poor trophy support, seemingly incapable of playing custom soundtracks while doing 90% of tasks and generally poor online integraton and community features.
The 360 however, has hardware problems, namely the RROD and DVD drive and to a lesser extent noise.
Its obvious which is easier and cheaper to sort for the consumer.

It was sad to see that the 360 had an almost two year headstart and the graphics of the Ps3 either met or surpassed it at launch!!!!!!!!!Now its just a matter of time for people to see that the background and upfront images of the Ps3 look crisp and sharp compared to only the upfront images looking good on 360.

I own Warhawk, MGS4, Uncharted, GT5:P and Heavenly Sword. Out of those I honestly feel MGS4 and possibly GT5:P are the only ones that wouldn't be possible on 360 as they appear on the PS3, be it due to storage capacity or lack of power.

so once it hits the 11/11/2008 in Japan the ps3 will be in its 3rd year.

Now come on the 360 is coming up to its 4th year very soon and only 20 million 360 world wide thats must be in peoples houses.

And yet the Wii is coming up to its 3rd year and it has already surpassed the 360 by an extra 10 million and that isn't even includeing the amount of Wii's that have been sold by November why because no one knows yet yet but i bet it will propaly have an extra 3-5 million add to that.

Now the PS3 there 15 million PS3 world wide and the PS3 is still in its 2nd year coming to its 3rd year and the 360 is only an extra 5 million ahead and its coming to its 4th year in a few months don't forget once the PS3 gets in to its 3rd year it will propaly hit its 20 million marck.

Thats only in its 3rd year its taken near the end of its 3rd year coming into its 4th year for the 360 to get to 20 million and like the others by the time it hits its 4th yeah it would of sold 3-5 million consoles.

If you take all these things into acount that doesn't look good for the 360, the Wii has surpassed the 360 big time. And the 360 is in its 3rd year.

And the PS3 has done better than the 360 did in its 2nd year and by the time the PS3 hits its 3rd year it still would of done better than what the 360 did. And remember the PS3 still cost more than the 360 and its still out saleing the 360.

Now if you take all these facts in account you can not tell me that the XBOX 360 will win the Console war.

Unless your telling me that every 360 owner will rebuy and own more than one console because thats the only way i can see the 360 winning this war right now.

The Only hope the 360 has of wining is for the console to sale less than the Nintendo Wii and MS can't afford to do something that crazy.
