PS3 sales surpass Xbox 360 in Europe, says Sony

At Sony's PlayStation Day event, the company announced that it has sold more PS3 consoles than Microsoft has sold Xbox 360 consoles in Europe, despite the earlier launch of the latter.

SCEE president and CEO David Reeves said that Sony has sold 12 million PSP handhelds and 48 million PS2 consoles in Europe.

"I'm also delighted to announce today that we have sold over 5 million PlayStation 3's throughout Europe," Reeves said.

"We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price."

Reeves noted that Sony has been consistently outselling its closest competitor - referring to the Xbox 360 - since October 2007, even with the latest price drop. He made no reference to Nintendo Wii sales in the region.

"I am delighted to be able announce today that we have sold more PlayStation 3's throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3."

"These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures."

if it is true the 360 is where the hardcore gamers are at, then they should be selling 19 million to a console that was out for about 3 years with a 25 million install base.

if nintendo's next machine was a powerhouse and went for super expensive budget titles, even if they hit 120 million users this generation, I really dont think that console would be selling off shelves at what I would assume would be marketed at a high price. casual gamers who bought the ps2 and now the wii just dont get on consoles that quickly

Yep MS totally lies about it while Sony is completely truthful in everything... oh wait. MS has 19 million, Sony said TODAY @ PS Day that they've sold 12 million Ps3s worldwide. That's still a 7 MILLION GAP. I work at a local video game shop, and many customers who bought those first year 360s (prior to the warranty) came back and bought second units from us. We've also had several customers trade in their malfunctioning 360's and upgrade to newer models or Elites.

Attach rates should be lower if a large portion of 360 sales were from second time owners, but they're not.

Very good point about the attach rates, they are important, but I don't think they completely dismiss the RRoD issues. Attach rates are affected by several factors and never tell the whole picture.

And again, my curiosity stems from working at a local gaming shop.

We are cuatious to carry used 360s because the first question anyone asks is what our shop's warranty is on used units (because MS won't fix an RRoD on a system purchased second hand).

It definitely affects OUR business, so I'm curious how it will continue to affect MS in the future:
- will a new model/build increase 360 sales again?
- will 360 sales continue to decline with RRoD fear?
- will the fear of RRoD or the 360's history affect MS's next unit?

Not to try to get into the fray on this but I can't stand seeing this self perpetuating lie being propogated... MS says they "shipped" 19 million units. That Shipped not Sold. Sony claims they've sold 12+ million units. Take what you will of this but 19 million shipped is not 19 million sold. Assuming 95% of that is sold (which it isn't btw actual lower), you are looking 18.05 million units sold over the life of the console. Assuming a 17% defective rate (which is the acknowledged "conservative" rate) you are looking at ~14.98 million conservatively working xbox360 units in the world.

If we look at the 360 estimate not so conservatively (will probably inflame some 360 fanbois out there...) the actual sold should be closer to 90% and the defect rate should be a blended 22% rate (between the !7% of the new units vs the 33% of the old) than the actual working units of 360 consoles in the world is....13.33 mil 360 units.

13.33-14.98 million units of 360 compared to 11.74 million PS3 (assuming 3% defect rate). Console numbers are reaching parity. Nothing to sneeze at for the PS3 considering it is a 16 month latecomer.
