GTA 4 plagued with bugs, PS3 suffers more than Xbox 360

It seems PS3 owners are suffering some GTA 4 blight of their own, after the infamous prostitute-bashing game was leaked early by pirates on the Xbox 360.

Several readers have emailed the INQ to report that their copies of GTA 4 on PS3 cannot be installed to the hard-drive on their consoles, even after a factory reset and reformat of the device. Other users have reported crashes after successfully installing the game.

Similar tales have popped up on the official Playstation forums, Digital Spy, GTA Forums, AVS Forums, and many more.

To begin with, users believed that only 60GB-launch consoles were suffering from the problems but, since these first systems reported errors, non-launch 60GB and 20GB console users have also reported problems. PS3 Forums has started a poll showing that it isn't restricted to one type of SKU here.

Someone on the Playstation forums contacted Sony support and received this answer: "The Rockstar tech guy said that they are looking at the image that was sent out for the PS3 disc and they'll post onto the official Rockstar forums when a fix comes up, which he said would hopefully be soon."

To review GTA4 Early you need premission from Rockstar. With glitches hwo did thsi get 10. Have u seen how many glitches SA has?

Also this might be fake. am not sure if both version of GTA4 have freezing errors? Yet with all of these problems this game gets 10's flown around easily? but those were before its realease.....

The only bug i have heard of from the ps3 is the installation issue and the freezing issue during cut scenes. It is apparently unique to certain consoles as switching to a diff console works. They are yet to pinpoint a problem but its probably due to some random firmware issue.

This article seems really whack though. Its hard to tell if they are serious especially after the last comment of reports of 360 owners already receiving RROD for GTA4

Here's the simple fact, guys:

A game that sells more will have more issues reported.

This generation, consoles and games are significantly more complex than last generation. Especially with all the SKUs. So unfortunately, Game X on Console SKU Y might have certain isues but on Console SKU Z it might not. For many games, this may not matter as much because less copies are sold, and thus less are publicized.

With big games like GTA4 or Halo 3 or Guitar Hero, you hear about every tiny issue because SO MANY COPIES are sold that a certain percentage of people ARE going to have the issues.

It happens with every big 360 release. "This game is killing 360's!" No, the crappy 360 hardware is killing 360's. The large numbers of this game sold, and thus being played, give the illusion that the game is murdering 360's, when really they're just happily commiting suicide as they're prone to do.

Yeah, it sucks, but that's the price of the next generation of gaming, it seems. You can't just write your game to work on 1 or 2 consoles and call it a day - every SKU needs to be thoroughly tested. See: the 360 version of Bully having trouble on older 360's.

Bottom-line, the only reason we hear so much about GTA4 RRoDing 360's or crashing on PS3's is because there are so many damn copies already in circulation. The PS3 issue in particular is probably a fairly small-scale issue, but it's under the magnifying glass due to the number of copies out and the fact that this is GTA4 week.

Anyway, hopefully whatever problems do exist will resolve themselves quickly, cuz everyone should play this amazing game.

Swedish gaming mag Gamereactor said that there are MAJOR DIFFERENCES between the 2 version

Swedish Gamereactor mentioned in their 10/10 review that they were pretty surprised regarding the difference between the PS3 and 360-versions. The PS3-version features better colours, contrast, load times and what looks to be better resolution textures. The game also looks sharper and has a more stable fps.

It's not just PS3. If you read the whole article, 360s are having problems as well with some reports of the game causing RRoDs; just not as many reports as PS3.

The freezing issues was false propaganda undoubtedly created by Microslaves who are purely envious of their version of GTA IV being noticably inferior to PLAYSTATION® 3. Those who are playing GTA IV on PS3 are experiencing the best game that Rockstar has to offer without any hiccups.

no problems yet. installed fine. cutscenes play fine.

at midnight when i got home, i played some multiplayer w/ no problems...but now it wont let me play multiplayer. thats the only problem i see so far.

other than that, it takes a little getting used to because its not like the other GTA games, but its definitely GTA at heart.

My 60 Gig plays it perfectly fine...the online Free Mode is the funnest thing EVER!

Overall, this (especially online) is amazing and I recommend this game to any ps3 or 360 owner. Two thumbs UP!

Only problem I have noticed is it kicking off a friend (once game starts) when trying to join any online mode BESIDES Free or Party Mode.

BUT i simply shut off the ps3, deleted the install file and reinstalled it and things have been fine ever since. Basically the fix rockstar stated worked like a charm. I don't see what the big deal was.

All this news about freezing had me concerned this morning since I have the 60GB model, but I installed the game and everything is working fine, and that was over 5 hours ago. I'd call BS but you never know, if true I suspect its just a bad batch of discs, or as stated some random firmware issue.

Everytime there is a fault with the PS3 you blame it on xbots making stuff about it. You always blame the RROD as a weakness for the 360 because you have nothing else to bash it on. Freezing on certain versions of the PS3 console is not "plagued with bugs".

BULLY for the 360 was plagued with bugs. This is not.

i haven't got the game yet. but i had many freezing problems with burnout and warhawk on the ps3. but after the last update things are going as smooth as a baby's bottom. and since my 360 is working now i'm not sure which version i should get. probably neither cause i'm not a big GTA fan in the first place.

No need for conspiracy theories guys. There are probably just some discs that are wonky. Haven't you guys ever bought a movie and the audio and video was off? As someone else said, with a game this complex there are bound to be some issues. I am going to give my GTA a spin in a few minutes here.

I for one have it and it runs beautifully. and yes it does look better than my friends xbox360 version. its the hard drive folks. the hard drive that microsoft thought wasnt necessary. :)

I do have a launch 60 Gb PS3 (now 300Gb), got the game last night at mid night. Installed played ... works fine.
This morning I am having some troubles to go multiplayer. Is probably the huge server load or they are fixing something on their side.

I'd like to see how many ppl are REALLY owners of the PS3 version of the game. Cause my neighbour, a super xbox fanboy, has written something like that on a forum and he hasn't got the game yet (he doesn't own a PS3 neither)....
But me (60Gb launch console) and my 2 workmates (40Gb both) got the game this morning, installed, played, all works ok. Hope it continues like this, i don't like bad surprises.

Sure there are issues...but it was most likely people with no space on their harddrive or corrupted inital GTA4 game install...all you have to do is delete the GTA4 install and it will reinstall...there is no need to reformat the drive......it could have also been some defective discs....remember the xbox 360 also had the same issue...freezing issue....but the xbox 360 version does not install to the harddrive so it is a different issue from the PS3 version.

I've had my PS3 (60GB model) on for like 8 hours with GTA in it and have had NO problems. With my luck they will issue a patch for people and it will screw up my shiz lol

I got my 360 version last night at a midnight launch and played it for 7 hours straight online with only a few minor gripes. I would constantly get disconnected from some rooms, but after a few retries, I would finally get a match. No lag, and insanely fun.

This morning I got my PS3 special edition. Took about 7-8 minutes to install, then I was up and running. No freezing and it looks slightly better on my PS3 on the same TV. (I thoroughly tested it to make sure). Haven't gotten a chance to go online but my verdict on both is that they are great and I have no issues. I have a launch 60gb, in fact I have the first one that was released from my Ebgames. I think this problem is a minor one, but we are hearing about it because we only ever hear about problems on forums and websites like these.

Doesn't anyone find it weird that over 5 video games sites (incl.IGN & GAME TRAILERS) reviewed the ps3 version & didn't have any problem like this.You see a couple of days ago people where saying that the ps3 version would outsell the xbox360 version 3-1.
So microsoft's boyz decided to spread this rumour that the PS3 version just doesn't boot or switch's off your ps3.Now PS3 noobies will listen to that and not buy the ps3 version,therefore making sure in the long run that xbox360's sell better.
How clever Microsoft...TAKE NOTE TAKE2!!. .how they are cause'n your sales to go down.Still wanna release extra content now for microsoft after they cause you mega loss's in sales?
Fact:I got a ps3(60gig launch model) install fine no problems at all.
5 of my buddies also have the ps3 version and they too have no problems. This is the same as the Orange Box issue....mine worked fine including the so called problematic episode 2...so what the hell?

I waited for my copy of GTA4 to post any comment, I read a lot of stupid dumbsh*t news yesterday, and I just have to make sure of that, so here it is:
- I have a 60g PS3, and after the installation, comes the intro cutscene and after that the gameplay, whith ANY FREEZING, in fact I played like 5-6 hours in a row, and no freeze, no glithch, no nothing, and connected to the net!!!! the truth is noone that I know have this problem!!!!!
- The graphics are AMAZING, just like IGN and other sites told to us, making well known that the PS3 is suporior of its x360 couterpart...I can't compare both, only have PS3 version, but one thing I'm certain... this games' graphics are one of the best in this gen, not the best, but hey it's a GTA game!!!!
- This is for sure the best GTA game ever, and one of the best games I ever played, don't undestand how some @sshole bash this game!!!! It's an intense experience of gameplay, tottaly funny, whit specatcular little details, just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
- Wow I'm really lucky that this game is being a SPECTACULAR EXPERIENCE for me!!!!!!!!!!
- And these are the reasons that I think this stupid stories that are coming along are ALL COMPLETLY BULLSH*T!!!!!!The curious that the same happened whith games that were proved to be better in PS3 like DMC4, COD4, Burnout paradise, Assassin's creed, etc, all of them good experinces to me!!!!!!.... I have a 60GB launch PS3 (european) and picked the game up at midnight. Installed fine and played online fine. Last night, I was unable to connect to the online server like many people and occasionally the game paused for a second or two. This sometimes happened when selecting the multiplayer option on the phone so I'm guessing it's pausing as it attempts to connect to the online servers. Anyone else had this?

I have the 360 version also (I have friends on both consoles) and I personally prefer the 360's look to the PS3's. On my 50" screen, the PS3 looks a little soft/out of focus when compared to the 360.

One minor difference I have noticed in the PS3's favour is that while watching tv, the 360 gives 2 viewpoints whereas the PS3 has a third close up view. I guess they've used the extra space available on blu-ray to improve the quality of the video.

you know i'm pro Sony not anti Xbox but likes ps3 better but I have my copy and I cant even get the game to start working to Roman's house the very first thing you do. I cant watch the full first cutscene all freezes on the boat. I dont believe its a cooked up story because its happening to me. I installed and it freezes, I uninstall and reinstall and it still freezes. I'm taking it back to best buy to exchange it so hopefully the new one works.

i think i found a way to fix the issue, here is what i did

i unistalled the install, then i ejected the disc, did a soft reset on the front of the PS3 (holding down the power buttion, once that finished i reinstalled and it didnt freeze at all for the next 2hours i played, were as before it froze three times in like 10 minutes. somone else who is having the issue give that a shot and let me know i wish you the best of luck.

Maybe it only in a specific region where there games are faulty? i only have a 40GB PS3 and please stop saying the "10 min install time" its like 5 mins not even,and i havent had a single problem yet.other then the that russian revolution mission is pissing me off..
