CONFIRMED: Playstation Home Not Open Till Fall of 08

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that it will expand the Closed Beta testing for PLAYSTATION®Home in Summer 2008, inviting a further number of registrants from the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) users. Following completion of the Expanded Closed Beta test, the PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service will commence in Fall 2008.

"We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PLAYSTATION Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation® tradition."

The PLAYSTATION Home Open Beta service that will become available in Fall 2008 will be built around providing new and fun community gaming experiences, such as connecting PlayStation games with Home and providing places and items from the games.

Details of the Closed Beta testing features, registration for the test and the opening of the service will be announced as they become available.

Man, to hell with it. If they were going to put out the open beta in July, I might still care. At this point, I really don't. I love my PS3, I think it's awesome, but they are dropping the ball HARD on this whole Home thing. They had advertisements up for it last year holiday season, and now they're saying that most of the members of PSN won't even get a taste until this fall.

Now I'm at the point where when it comes, it comes. I'll enjoy it when it's out, but until I look on the PS Store and see it, I can honestly no longer bring myself to care.

Since it will be released in the fall this is what I like to see in Home.

Arcade games, pool, chess, connect four, basketball shootouts, a baseball field where you can also join with other people in a game of Kickball, a place you can go to have a paintball match, live video feeds of online matches being played by other players, A palce where you can go to play a live game like maybe 1 vs 100, the abilty to have youtube in your homespace, special events, and special lobby's.

Then it was told to us that it would come out this Spring, and apparently that isn't happening either.

A open beta is mainly to stress test an almost final product
A Closed beta is to test bugs and major flaws of a software, and sadly home seems to be taht ambitious that it needs alot of time to iron those errors out of the prog.

Yes everyone can be pissed about the delay, but its the overreaction im sick about, people yell "F*k sony" and "i officially dont acare about home anymore", and thats where i step in and tell you to calm down. it's a software, FREE of charge give them theyre time they need to make it the experience everyone of you expects it to be.

Ok, on that I certainly agree with you. Some people get out of hand with the whole thing, and that's out of line. Overreacting is not the answer. We DO have to remember that this is something that Sony is offering for free, but man . . . I am tired of being told a release date for the open beta and it not happening. If they don't know when it's going down, they need to honestly shut the hell up about the whole thing. Get at me when they have something concrete.

Do you all remember that? You know, Sony isn't stupid, they have a pretty good idea of how long it takes to produce hardware and to produce games. With that in mind, I think it is clear what is going on here.

Sony know that Home would be a great seller for the Playstation system. They knew if they could say, he it will be out in 2007 people would freak. Sony also knows that if they delay it a little longer they are still in good shape.

Now home has gone from 2007 release date to late 2008! That is a big difference!

Given that Home will be a free service, I'm not sure how much complaining we have a right towards. It's disappointing, yes, but on the bright side, it's just a few more months - and it hasn't been cancelled - so be thankful.

Besides, this is spring. It's time to go out and enjoy the sun and fresh air, and when we come back to our consoles in the fall, Home will be ready for us. ;)

It's really gone from not believing rumors floating around, to not believing Sony itself...I mean there's alot of rumors that we know (or most of us know) not to believe until it has officially come from Sony's mouth, and for sure Sony said Home was coming in Spring 08...but now it's delayed until Fall...that's gonna be 2 long seasons at least for me unless some good games come out between those dates other than MGS4.

I just want them to keep their word on bringing in-game communication with 2.4 in the summer...seriously if Sony had that and even brought out a cheaper version of their Hall of Fame, alot of dual owners wouldn't have to worry about which third party version to choose since alot of people are buying games for the 360 from the extra features LIVE has...if I was Sony I would've jumped on that, it's like they're running around the office in a circle like a chicken with their heads cut off or they have an "I dont care, we give you what we think you want" attitude. Everyone is screaming to the top of their lungs on the official Blog about bringing in-game XMB and next thing you know they have a new blog about Eye of Judgment cards and a new video codec feature for a new update. You want in-game communication? Here you go...now you can go on the internet while watching a blu-ray, I mean come on...I just advise them to not bring out another update unless that's included if they don't want to hear 300 comments on their blog asking for this stuff again. "We're working on it" is starting to not be good enough...work on it then and don't work on ANYTHING ELSE.

2 years is too long for the ps3 to be without an defense against achievements and a solid online system. It will already be 3 years into the 360's lifetime when it comes out. 3 years! i can tell you guys, being a beta tester, there isn't much you're missing. i know its easy for me to say since i'm already in but its the truth.

there's still alot you can't do that has been announced. right now there are no trophy rooms, the arcade games suck, no cross-game chat (although there is in-Home text messaging), not enough places to go and over-all not enough to do.

you guys are missing nothing right now.

if you were in the beta, i guarantee you that you would lose interest after a week. there is simply not enough content in Home right now. it wouldn't live up to very one's high expectations.

that being said, i think it would be alot better if they let more people in. it's suppose to be community based and there's hardly anyone ever there.

Let's be honest alot of people want Home to come out now just so they can say psn is better than Live. What if Home was to be released now and gets bashed be the media because it's so boring and there is really nothing to do.

I spoke to someone in the beta who said nobody really goes into the Home beta untill there is a schedule meeting because there is not to much to do. Why would Sony release Home If they can't get the people that's in the closed beta to keep coming back to Home. I think Sony is trying to get those features that will keep you coming back to Home.

I don't know whats going on but it seems like Sony has no direction with Home if it's getting delayed by a year but adding more crap like rooms or changing the lobby could be the problem. I've played 146 games, average about 25 hrs/wk usage, and have a GS of 29,950...my 360 has been put to the test. But, if you're smart about it, checking mfg. dates and power consumption, you can assure yourself of getting a 65nm Falcon model 360, and likely have no fear of RROD.
It's sad, but the Sony fanboys that love to slam LIVE because it's not "free" like PSN, are the same ones that Sony is continually sh1tting on, and lying to. Fact is, without charging SOMETHING, PSN/Home will NEVER achieve the success MS has with LIVE. It's pretty obvious Sony is providing very limited resources for their online strategy and development, and their fans are the ones who have to suffer for it. I have an Xbox 360 and PS3 too. There isn't anything on Xbox Live that can go toe to toe with Playstation Home. There is no alternative for PS Home. No one else has there own PS Home. Buying a 360 won't solve any ones Homeless case since it offers no service similar to Home. Neither will downloading Second Life or w/e.

The only huge gap between PSN and XBL is the in-game features. Xbox Live doesn't have anything like Home up and running.

Well I love my gaming more than anything else I do. I've been doing it for nearly 3 decades, but I'm getting sick of this gaming culture that has sprung up in the last 2 generations.

Everyone acts like they're owed something, everyone wants everything right away, and cheap and it has to be perfect.

They never set a date for Home. Whats Spring? Thats a season not a date. If they could have made it they would have narrowed it down by now.

GTA set a date, and then pushed it back. Obviously it wasnt ready, and dont anyone say it was delayed for PS3 or it was delayed for Xbox. Both version have always been weeks apart from each other so it wasn't ready for either. R* first date was probably just to calm nervous shareholders given all the crap they had been through. I think we'll all agree in a weeks time we wouldn't have wanted to play a version that had had 6 months less polish on it. Think about that. And stop acting like we didn't know till now that software could be delay. God. Does anyone remember how long Perfect Dark got delayed, and was it worth it in the end. What about Halo? Its got delayed so long a brand new console sprung up and ended up buying it. What you dont think that game was originally made for XB do you? It was in developement a good 3 years before Xbox came along. Maybe sometimes these things are for the best.

Then people say, dont unveil it so early. Well in case you forgot the GDC before last things weren't so great for Sony. Actually things weren't really that bad, bad all the bad word of mouth on the street was terrible. Home and LBP turned it all around and they haven't looked back since, so maybe they wanted to unveil it then, or maybe they had to for the good publicity. Beside we hear about every MGS, ever GT every FF 3 years before they release. Thats the games business.

If they can give us in-game communication in 2.40 through a firmware update then why not custom soundtracks? You can access the friends list in tons of games and the developer allowed it yet there giving it to us across every game so how come they wouldn't be able to do it with custom soundtracks through an update?

Besides that they already made a G.A.P. poll asking G.A.P. members what features they would like to see through a firmware update. Custom soundtracks had the majority vote and second came in-game messaging/communication. Those polls are held by Sony too.

When I heard that the 60GB model was going to be discontinued in Aussie, I made my mind and bought one for AUD978 bundled with R:FoM, Motorstorm and 2nd sixaxis in August last year.

Yes, I admit that I've been enjoying a lot of games offline and online on it and it's a great machine - no question asked!! but still...I want HOME as that was half of the whole reason of my purchase! I read somewhere that HOME will be available april 08 but now thiss?? open beta in fall and that's over a whole year of waiting! this wait is more irritating than the one of HAZE!!

My elite 360 is covered for 2 years and my ps3 is covered for 2 years, both have great games and other stuff but hey who cares, really its all about the games and the online experience. This is what they have done to gain my respect:
1) Released a full and complete console that works. It has not failed, or broken and IMO contains true next gen features such as wireless internet, Memory card readers, easy compatibility with my ipod, HD media play back, wireless controller, upgradable hard drive etc etc etc OUT OF THE BOX.
2) Customer support has been a pleasure to deal with ( i thought my ps3 had a problem, i'm not 100% sure because it got stolen before i could send it in which was to be AT NO COST TO MYSELF)
3) Continued support for their product through firmware updates, DS3, PSstore updates.
4) Free Casino Royale Bluray disc
5) Flawless experience with the PS2
6) Free Online

There is another factor, but its not what sony did, It was MS. They sold me a console that they new was defective, that I had to pay extra for every single little thing i wanted it to do, and then they refused to fix it when it broke. So it was either Pay for another one, or lose all my money i had spent on games/hardware. On moral ground, i refused to pay them.

I will admit openly that i loved the time i had with my 360. It was a great experience when it worked and the wow factor gears held when i first played it has not yet been matched. But it didnt work all that often. So i respect sony because while they have their faults, they seem to treat their customers with some level of respect.

On a side note, i realise some people may take my comments as fanboy-ish, but my opinions are what they are because of my personal experiances and those of my close friends... the ones i know in person. MS cost myself and a few people i know alot of money. Feel free to bag sony if that is a reflection of your experiance with them. But so far mine is only positive. So i will continue to respect them and appreciate the quality entertainment system that they have produced.

Is it just me or does it seem that Home is just going to be another Duke Nukem Forever? In all honesty, everyone keeps mentioning the fact that we should be patient and so forth. It's pretty hard to be patient when you're constantly bombarded with a release time frame, then, when that time arrives, Sony pulls it further. It's like the closer we get to it's release, the more Sony pushes it back. Had Sony not given a time frame or said something like "It's ready when it's ready." rather than continuously changing its release I'm pretty sure most of us wouldn't be as upset.

Frankly, I could care less about Home anymore. I love the PS3 and all, but Sony seriously needs to learn to stop talking out their asses when it comes to releasing things. It's PERFECTLY all right to be frustrated with the process that allows ANY company to provide it's customers with a working and functional product. Delays save money, and that what it's going to always boil down to. Not preset deadlines, not emofanboys, not rumors, MONEY. I'm sure Sony has analyzed the cost-benefit of a delay versus early release for Home and I'm certain the proper decesion has been made.

If you have to have a service that allows you to sit on your couch and talk to or curse out your "friends" in a game RIGHT NOW then please go buy a 360. Then spam their board with your complaints and non sense but DONT come crawling back when Home does see the light of day and jump on no bandwagons here. 360 is a good system but if you bought a PS3 just for home, I hate to break it to you but gmail is free, hotmail is free, and so was yahoo mail last time I checked. Hell buy a cell phone and get you a bluetooth if you got all this money to blow on a new system to chat with people in game.

Chris had a 360 before he got a PS3. I'm pretty positive he did buy it for Home. He seems to care most about it anyway. I've been waiting for Home longer and I'm like no big deal. A buddy in the beta said it was no where near ready to be opened. All I have is a PS3 and I will never own a 360. I'm a one console guy and I've been rolling with Playstation since PS1. Chris is all about 360 and hes always looking for something to b!tch about. Hes not online much anyway. I can understand why hes upset but its not a reason to sell his PS3. Allow me to say I was wrong about Home. Its funny because it was delayed five minutes after I said it was closer than you think. I was wrong and I will admit that. So I got that out of the way. Sony really slapped me in the face on that one. lol. I think you delayed it to make me look bad. lol. I'm not a "fanboy' like I said. I f**king hate that word. I am a fan. A fan likes something and a fanboy likes one thing and hates on the other. I don't hate the 360, I just don't want or need one. I'm a one console (per gen) person like I said. I bought the PS3 because it plays games and does everything else I want it to do. I play games all the time on PS3. I'm 11 hours into GT5: prologue and thats not including online or drifting. I play a lot of CoD:4 also. Theres Warhawk and MLB 08 The Show. I've got games to play. It will take a lot for you to pick up on PS3 because you're attached to your 360 and I understand that, you had it first.
Playstation has the games I've been playing for a long time like Gran Turismo (I'm a big fan). Theres nothing that makes me want a 360. I'm happy with my PS3 & PSP. My friend had an Xbox and Halo was fun but still just a FPS with a very good story. Halo is a great franchise with like I said a great story but when it comes down to it, I'm good. His Xbox tore up in less than a year. That through me away from Xbox right then and there. The thing you don't understand is that I'm happy with my PS3. Just because I don't want a 360 doesn't make me a fanboy.

ATLRoAcH, I'm with you on that. I'm very happy with my PS3, especially with the backwards capabilities and the new games that are coming soon. I will be patient for Home because I know it's probably going to be the best thing that happened to Sony. I've known Sony to be pretty slow with a lot of things, especially when it comes to software. When they're slow with things and they finally release the product, it turns out to be phenomenal. The PS3 is the best purchase I ever made in years. It feels good to be part of something that's amazing.

so that my fellow Playstation 3 owners will see how much of an overhyped feature it really is.

i have a 360. i have access to all of it's supposedly superior functions, and honestly, in game menu access is so...meh. seriously.

i don't see why everybody creams their pants over it.

don't get me wrong, it's a nice feature to have, but it's nothing so revolutionary as to warrant the constant pestering Sony is being hammered with for it. it'll come when it comes, but don't be surprised if you find yourselves disappointed by it.

as for Home, it'll come when it comes, but for me, there are too many cool games coming out to keep me busy well into the fall, so i won't be missing Home that much.

i got GTAIV next week. that'll last me well through May.

i got Haze in May, which'll be battling with GTAIV for my time, and will flow nicely into Metal Gear Solid 4 in June.

Metal Gear will dominate June and then i'll probably go back to GTAIV for the rest of July

in August, i got Mercenaries 2, and maybe Saints Row 2, if it's not like the original too much.

then in September, i got Silent Hill, Little Big Planet, and Killzone 2, to name only 3. SOCOM and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed also hit in September.

by that point, the Home open beta will probably be available. and i didn't even list the games i'm getting for the rest of this year (ie, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, Prototype, Ghostbusters, etc).

there are just too many actual games coming out for me to fret about not getting Home this Spring.

There's no point in them releasing home at all now. By the time it comes out (which, let's face it, is not going to be until next year: if the open beta is planned for autumn then it won't happen until winter, and home itself won't be released until spring-summer next year), there will be LOTS of great games for PS3, which will NOT have had "accomplishments" or whatever, NO tropies will be available for games, NO in-home launching will be available for most games, and NOBODY will then want to use it. Home was a good idea for PS3, if it launched with the system, or maybe just a year after it launched. 2 to 2 1/2 years later and nobody will care.

well the ps3 has onlt been out 1 year in the uk, so if they bring it out end of this year, that's 18 months. not bad really. What annoys me is all the hype the internet creates, it gets peoples hopes up and everyone starts assuming and creating rumours just to be let down by the official word. Its the same with in-game XMB, all it takes is one article to be posted on N4G titled "in-game XMB next Thursday?" and that's it, 300 comments people going "yay cant wait, I knew it, yay!" followed by "sony announce its just rumour" followed by "darn sony, rubbish, slow, delaystation bla bla bla". i know this is a bit different as sony did say summer as apose to rumour, but hopefully you get what i'm trying to say

Why do people expect anything other than this from Sony, it is what they are known for, yet everytime they announce some grand new pipe dream, everyone jumps all over it and gets all excited as if we are actually going to see the product sometime soon.

To me its not Home being delayed that bothers me. Home is a part of Sony's online strategy to overcome Microsoft with trophies (aka achievements) arcade and social interaction. Its just another sign that the core gamer and most likely all of your friends are gonna being hanging in Xbox Live and Sony's ship has probably sailed on this generation when it comes to playing games online with your buds. Hell on PS3 you can't even tell what game your friends are playing. So it just shows us their overall strategy is really becoming a clusterf**ck. I think at this point they should just scrap home, copy xbox live and lets move forward

We should all be willing to wait for something as great as home is going to be. I'm sure you all know the benefits and features that Home will offer, so I'll skip all that. I just have an outlook to share with you. I bought a PS1 because I LOVED RPG's, same for PS2, and same for the third console. And I will continue to buy Playstation for the Japanese RPG's like Persona 3 and Final Fantasy 13. Any atlus game really as well. That's why I'm VERY enthused about Home. It's basically an online community, but it's remeniscent of MMORPG's and the like. It take a lot of time to make an RPG, not to mention an original concept like home will be. They have to keep us tech hungry fans happy, and they released it right now, it might not live up to our expectations. I think sony would rather us complain and get frustrated with their "Delaystation" rather than give us inferior product (Which I know sometimes can't be helped). So I don't know what all the fuss is about, but come on RPG lovers, let's let them finish home before they give it to us!!! ( On a side note I am not happy about the XMB, should have been out by now, the tech for that is there already)

It's not so much my own disappointment with Home's arrival I'm concerned about, it's Sony's whole way of dealing with its consumers. Sure, it's free. Sure, it may need improvement. But they set specific dates for release, which are then pushed two times, sometimes even three times.

Why is this important? It is because they advertised many of these features in their campaign and THEN they moved the date. If Sony had said: "Home will arrive in late 2008, sure it sucks guys, but that's the truth." I for one would be satisfied, because it means that I can relate to the information given to me. As of now, the empty words make them seem unprofessional.

I wouldn't call Sony liars, but their information is no unreliable that it WILL get on peoples' nerves. Sure, I'm drowning in homework at the university, and I'm not saying that others don't have lives either. But it does matter that less than half of their promises are actually met.

So I say to Sony, if it comes out in 2009, just SAY IT. But please, stop your whole teasecock attitude towards the consumer, it's getting old.

I've been trying to tell people Home isn't going to come out for a few months (It was never officially announced for Spring time anyway), I had expected a September release alongside LBP and it's extremely likely that it won't be far off from the looks of this.

Home is completely different to anything produced before it, it will take one hell of a lot of work to get right and Sony are working on it. Remember this is a fully online experience that has to run perfectly smoothly and be able to cope with demands, it's more tough than people think. Most people simply aren't thinking anyway, they expect perfection in a few years for something of this magnitude. Home isn't just some 3D MySpace/Facebook/Sims thing that's gonna be tacked on for good measure, it's going to completely change the way people use the PS3 (The majority anyway), it's a 4D menu system.

This is what Sony meant by 4D gaming, the use of Home as a fully interactive 4D menu/meeting place. It'll be good people! Autumn for Home and igXMB will definitely be a long way before that, I predict a June release following on from MGS4. Custom music integration may also be possible from the igXMB but I have no idea on that...

teh loat ass sony, they loaft on everthing, but when it comes it is usually worth it. sony's like a friend who promisses to meet you in 20 minutes to blaze then takes 2 hours but brings enough bud thats bomb

I didn't buy a PS3 for Home, and yeah it sucks it been delayed for the like the 3rd or 4th time. Whatever, I bought a PS3 because it has my favorite game franchises, but I could easily see this pissing off a lot of people.

Back in day when I was in the 6th grade, Jurassic Park was out in theaters. The year was 1993. It instantly became one of the best movies I've seen back then.

I later found out that Jurassic Park 2 was in development and that got me immediately excited with joy. Weeks later, I found out what the actual release date of the sequel was. A DAGGER IN MY HEART! My dreams were shattered. I found out that the sequel will not be showing until 1997. 3 years later!

My only choice was to not think or anticipate the release since 3 years was too long of a wait for a kid. That was exactly what I did and before you know it, those years slowly arrived and I finally got to watch Jurassic Park 2.

The whole point of my story is that I will not think or anticipate Home. I will pretend it never exist until one day, the future is now and Home is live.

I'm no fanboy, I'll tell you straight up. THIS SUCKS. Do any of you realize this was supposed to be out FALL 07! No beta, RELEASE! Now we don't even have an open beta till July! WHAT! I'm in GAP, I'm an avid PS3 player, but man, that's harsh. I don't care if it's finished, that's the point of it still being in BETA! Who cares, I hear about all this "Warhawk and Uncharted and Resistance features in home" that sound so cool. Make your own battle plan in the sand! But no, none of us get that for a full 3 months at least. Fall...No Spring....No Summer....No fall the next year. I WANT MY HOME. Now I know some of you are going to say "It's free". It's not free, I payed $500 for a 20GB just after launch and I expect to get my moneys worth. I've spent almost $1000 on games alone in the past year and a half. I know some are going to say "Patience" My response is, That can only go so far. And even more will say "I want In Game XMB more than Home" Trust me, I do too. But that doesn't excuse the fact that Sony is a huge international conglomerate that probably has enough resources to handle both...or so it would seem.

That's my opinion.
