I watched an interview with a developer (I think it was for Disney's Aladdin) from years ago and he said they were required to raise the difficulty because so many games were rented back then. It was for several years. The last 6 months PS Plus has caught up to it. The competition between MS and Sony is good for gamers, though. It forces each company to try to outdo the other and keeps there prices from going up and up.
