while not as big as GTA V, there were a lot of areas in GTA that were barren areas of nothing, the map in GTA V did not need to be as big as it was.

vishmarx3655d ago

or there needed to be more missions than there were

mikeslemonade3655d ago

I agree those middle and upper areas of GTAV were bland. But GTAV still the 4th greatest game of the last generation.

If Watchdogs gives us a sandbox game that is a better looking version then that's already a must-play game.

Eyeco3655d ago

Did anyone notice a prison in the desert, I came across it early in the game thinking there would be an awesome jail break mission, nope...nothing, its just a random building that automatically awards you a 5 Star wanted level.

The single biggest flaw of GTA V, is that there are either too few missions, or not enough missions that takes advantage of the full map, couple that with the linear mission structure, just gives the Map the big for the sake of being big feel, like the worlds tallest building it serves no other purpose other than to be a statement of production value.

Quite dissapointing actually.

jlukee3655d ago

@eyeco

Its a shame that there wasnt an awesome jailbreak mission! I think they may use these areas in the upcoming DLC.

gameseveryday3655d ago

The upper area of GTA5 was totally bland. Watch Dogs on the other hand seem to be full of life.

GarrusVakarian3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

I wouldn't call it bland, im glad the whole map wasn't a city. The mountainous areas were beautiful in GTA5. I also loved the area where Trevor lives (desert/airstrip area).

I like variety in a map.

KonsoruMasuta3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

It was more the mid section of the map. The north part of it actually had some things to see like Sandy Shores, Paleto Bay, the jail, and the military base. However, between Los Santos and these areas, the map was pretty empty.

mushroomwig3655d ago

That's true, it's like Just Cause 2. The map may be huge but there are miles and miles of empty space. At least Watch Dogs is based on a real city and it's going to be packed tightly with things to do.

classic193655d ago

so you saying gta5 isn't based on the real LA. fun fact LA do have a countryside if ppl are wondering.. gta5 map size was un matched. im looking forward to this game tho, ps3 for me. good times ppl.

frostypants3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

Look at that map. Then look at a real map of Chicago. It isn't based on Chicago for crap beyond the fact that they tossed in a couple of Chicago landmarks so they could use the claim in their marketing and screenshots.

-Foxtrot3655d ago

GTAV had enough room for another large city near the top. I don't know why they didn't add Las Venturas and add a smaller city near the trailer park where Trevor lived.

They could of least gave us secret places to explore and things to find. Look at all those myths and legends GTA SA apparently had

LordMaim3655d ago

Maybe once they get around to doing DLC, they'll thrown in an extra major island or something.

-Foxtrot3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

@Lord Maim

If we get it...they seem to be more bothered about the stupid online.

If it wasn't for the online the Single Player DLC would of probably been announced

The Lost and Damned and The Ballard of Gay Tony came out roughly a year after GTA4

It's coming up to a year since GTAV came out and nothing has been announced.

jayswolo3654d ago

lol, they announced SP DLC last year...

SneakyDoo3654d ago

Look, creating Los Santos for GTA V meant a lot of profound and meticulous work. GTA V's Los Santos has a far more ambient scope, attentive detail, and graphical output than 2004's San Andrea's 3 cities combined. Las Venturas, San Fierro, and Los Santos in SA were literally like 40 blocks each.

And Paleto Bay is "near the top" of GTA V's map. Adding Las Venturas would just make it look awkward; there'd have to be more desert, and the Southern California-like hills would not match around Las Venturas's ambience.

Also, all those myths and legends SA had were overzealous assumptions. None of the myths proved to be true. People need to realize Rockstar can't just scrap up 2+ cities like they did with SA. If they made another city, the overall map would have to be bigger too. Multiple cities is something GTA 6 on PS4/Xbone will include.

steve30x3654d ago

@ SneakyDoo : Do tell us how you know what the map in GTA 6 will be like?

quenomamen3655d ago

I like the empty countryside parts of GT5, adds contrast. Dont need mile after of concrete and bricks.

Clown_Syndr0me3655d ago

I agree, it adds realism. There's nothing like going for an off road drive with a couple of mates and blowing the car up and having to run for miles across fields...good times lol.

steve30x3654d ago (Edited 3654d ago )

I love that open and barren bits in GTA V. It makes a change from most other sandbox games that are nothing but a big City. The city should have been a small bit bigger or maybe add a second city to the map though.

Anyway The map comparison between GTA IV and GTA V isnt very good. In my opinion the GTA V map didnt feel like it was five or six times larger than the GTA IV map. It felt like it was about 50% bigger. If that even

Mr_Butata3654d ago

The best thig about the GTA V map is: DIVERSITY. And with that u need a big map.

You say Barren Areas, i say, imersion and more áreas to mess around with the Online Mission Editor ;)

PsylentKiller3654d ago (Edited 3654d ago )

The map needed to be big to accommodate air travel. Also, those big empty areas were great for car races.

And, yea, there were not enough missions to take advantage of that huge map. Hopefully WatchDogs will make the most out of the map. I'm so excited for this game. I'm at Titanfall levels of excitement. I'm just hoping that I'm not setting the bar too high for myself.

Edit:
I just took a closer look at the map comparison and the size of the blocks are much smaller in Watch Dogs than GTA V. It's like the zoom level is closer on the GTA map. I think when zoomed in to the same levels as the GTA map, the Watch Dogs map will equate to about 1.5X the size of the City are of GTA V.

Bonkerz3655d ago

From the videos of Watch dogs it seems like everywhere he went on the map had some type of activity, people, cars, buildings, animals or whatever, some parts of GTA 5 or fairly empty, so ill take a busy pretty dang big map rather than a bigger emptier map.

WeAreLegion3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

I think that's a pretty good sized map. Not every game needs to have the island of Panau, ya know?

MasterCornholio3655d ago

I hope we see Just Cause 3 at E3.

WeAreLegion3655d ago

As much as I'd love that, I'm not sure Avalanche is a large enough studio to be making Mad Max and JC3 at the same time.

deafdani3655d ago

Panau bored me to tears. It was just way too big for its own good, in my opinion.

And I love sandbox games, but I just couldn't bother with Just Cause 2. Abandoned it after... I don't know, 8 hours or so. Was bored to death by that point.

Retaliation3655d ago

Density over volume. I'd rather have a map that's a bit smaller but has more activities and more interaction.

The developers confirmed that already. Can't wait to play this game

Palitera3655d ago

I strongly disagree with the comparison method. It seems like GTA V's map is quite zoomed in and the other are not.

Compare the size of each block, for instance.

Anyway, as said, Watch Dogs seems to have lots of activities, something that GTA V was pretty bad at, since the map was quite empty and the activities were all instanced, not well tied into the open world.

christrules00413655d ago

Nice catch. I wonder if we could blow up the watch dogs map to make the blocks the same size and then do a proper comparison.

The only thing right now that I wish I could do in Watch Dogs would be driving airplanes, helicopters and jets. I'm sure the other activities will keep me well entertained but still.

Palitera3655d ago (Edited 3655d ago )

Also GTA had almost no reward for the side activities, while Watch Dogs has even locked content until you perform some side actions.

And that's how it should be done! Saints Row gets it right too.

i think the only real loss is GTAV

OtterX5h ago

I think everyone and their sister owns the game by now. They likely want to squeeze the rest of the holdouts before GTAVI releases.

Profchaos1h ago

That game comes and goes from subscriptions so frequently I think it's expected now. Like rdr2 on gamepass Rockstar Games only last a max of 3 months On a service

Huey_My_D_Long5h ago

indivisible was pretty neat. Cute artstyle, fun throwback to older RPGs, shame its leaving but it is on sale often

shinoff21833h ago

Definitely. I e joyed what I played of it. Still gotta grab the physical at some point

Petebloodyonion5h ago

I'm not surprised by GTA V removal, Rockstar never allows this game to stay long on a subscription service.
They usually allow 4 to 6 months.

lodossrage4h ago

Yeah, they do that routinely with both GTA and Red Dead.

But it's because they know they can still sell them so they take them off and on to these sub services in cycle.

The weird thing to me is why is anyone still buying those games at this point? You would think after 3 generations of being sold GTA 5 that everyone and their momma would have it by now

RNTody3h ago

I fail to see how the loss of an almost 11 year old game that released across 3 generations is in any way a problem.
