“PlayStation 4″ Plans Suspended?

Big news if this turns out to be accurate. A report has gone up on a Japanese website which seems to state that Sony have shelved their plans for their next generation of home consoles. Following a translation offered on the Beyond3D forums we’re led to believe that the development of a new console will be deferred for a period of time so that Sony can focus on keeping the PlayStation 3 as up to date and relevant as possible.

Plans for the PS4 have not been 'shelved', it's a few years away anyway and I'm sure it's still right on track. Nothing here suggests otherwise.

i do agree with that. we dont need higher graphic for now.

it probably not shelved but simply halted. they are just waiting to see if handheld can replace console

Istanbull4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

Good news, I don't need a PS4 for the next 4 years. NGP, PS3 and PS2 family will keep me happy! :)

Honestly, I think the PS4 will release holiday 2014 imo.

pangitkqb4851d ago

I personally don't want to see a PS4 or Xbox 720 until 2013 at the earliest. I'm thoroughly enjoying this gen and feel that there is bigger and better yet to come on current console hardware, particularly PS3 and PC (as it is always upgradeable).

A few more years this gen would be good for both the industry and consumers. It gives devs more time to perfect and profit from games and continually lowering prices benefit consumers.

Perjoss4851d ago

Would be very unwise for Sony to let Microsoft get that year (or more) head start again. But it looks like that's exactly what they are doing.

BattleAxe4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

If you look at it logically, the PS3 is the most powerful console on the market today, so even if MS brings out the XBOX 720 in the next couple of years, the PS3 should have no problem competing in the graphics department as the 360 really doesn't have any games that come close to surpassing most PS3 exclusives, especially when you look at games like Killzone 3, Uncharted 2 and GoW 3. One thing is for sure, and its that the next XBOX won't have Blu-Ray, which means that it will still be behind technologically in some senses. The Wii 2 might have high def graphics, but for some reason I think that it might only manage to be on the same level of the XBOX 360. I don't have much confidence with Nintendo in this respect.

I think Sony will focus more on the NGP when it comes out, and the big bonus with the PS3 and NGP is that the games can be ported back and forth easily, which is a huge benefit and I think it really helps to extend the life of the PS3. Overall, the PS3 is on a huge up-swing right now with all the exclusive games that are comming out, and with possible collaboration with STEAM and having a shared PSN between PS3 and NGP.

Kleptic4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

^^ I don't know if its as simple as that...

The 360's early release did absolutely nothing to the PS2...the PS2 crushed the 360 for the entirety of 2006...and was the second highest selling console in 2007 iirc (being behind only the Wii)...

it did hurt the PS3, so I see what you are saying...an earlier Xbox could hurt the PS4...but if Sony still has very strong support for the PS3 if and when a new xbox comes out, and by then they will definitely be making profit even on the console itself...business wise, it may be a good thing...

darthv724851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

that MS may in fact stick to their word about not having anything for the next couple of years. Focusing on kinect.

Then again....it could hurt them if they underestimate the competition again. Meaning they obviously didnt think MS or Nintendo would be doing as good this gen as they are.

They should not focus on the brand recognition as much and just deliver something no-one would have foreseen. Keep it very hush hush Sony.

EasilyTheBest4851d ago

@BattleAxe.
"so even if MS brings out the XBOX 720 in the next couple of years, the PS3 should have no problem competing in the graphics department"

If you believe that I feel sorry for you.

DaTruth4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

But I'm getting the feeling that MS and its shareholders don't want to be in this business anymore!

I think both Sony and MS will milk the $hit out of this gen with Sony definitely making another foray into the hardcore gaming market. I think MS is hoping they can be the next-gen Wii and Sony is hoping they can relegate the PS3 into that category whenever the PS4 releases!

Edit: I'm good for now! Maybe I can invest in a better PC now and get my half gen there! Eight years is a long time to stretch a PC that wasn't even good when i bought it!

R0me4851d ago

Maybe this one guy was right about this cloud gaming... Why invest billions in a new console which gets hacked etc.

Maybe in some years you buy a TV with cloud gaming and you can play every game you want, no exclusives, no new hardware etc. you just pay a price and start the game. No Fanboy wars? I cant believe that.

HolyOrangeCows4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

"they are just waiting to see if handheld can replace console"
I REALLY doubt that.

This economy HARDLY demands a new, more expensive console. Any of the big three would be total fools to release a new home console at this time. With handhelds, the risk should be lesser, with prices being smaller (That is....HOPEFULLY the NGP is cheaper or equivalent to the PS3).

R2D24851d ago

Imagine if you could plug a hand held to your TV and play games next gen games.

malandra4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

PS4 will be released on for the holidays 2016

PS3 is not even half through its cycle, unlike the 360 which is pretty much obsolete compared to the PS3 or a high end gaming PC

AAACE54851d ago

But it doesn't make sense guys! Didn't we just see an article on here saying they designed the NGP with the Ps4 in mind?

I believe they can get a lot more out of the Ps3, so no rush on the next console. But why make a comment like that if they were planning on delaying it a few more years?

Kalipekona4851d ago

Some of you are so funny. The PS3 and 360 are extremely close in power. Developers, engineers, and simple common sense all tell us that. The games on both consoles, despite the rantings of fanboys, are also very similar.

Crysis 2 on the 360 and Gears of War 3 look as good as anything on the PS3. And multiplatform games like Dead Space 2 look better than most PS3 exclusives except for just a couple.

This mantra that the PS3 is somehow above the 360 is pure nonsense. And the idea that the PS3 could possibly rival the next Xbox is beyond ridiculous, it's laughable. The next Xbox could be just twice as powerful as the 360 and it would still smoke the PS3 in the graphics department, it wouldn't even be close.

badz1494851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

"Imagine if you could plug a hand held to your TV and play games next gen games."

I believe Sony will allow the NGP to do just that. the PSP has that feature for god sake and with more power to the NGP, getting PS3 equivalent graphic using the NGP connected to HDTV is totallt possible! at least THAT's what I'm hoping to be there day 1 on NGP! :)

on topic;

if this is true, this will be a 'real' 10 year plan from them without a next gen console unlike PS1 with PS2 and now PS2 with PS3!

TheLastGuardian4851d ago

They said it was going to be a 10 year console. I believe PS4 will release as early as 2015.

miyamoto4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

I think Sony is taking a page out of the PS2 book.
Technically the PS3 & PS2 & PS1 share a fundamental design principle: all rely on the commercial value & longevity of their respective optical disc format: CDROM, DVD & Blu-Ray formats respectively.(sorry PSP UMD)
Its really amazing how these media formats were designed to be supported to last for many years!
If we think that the PSP & NGP can co-existence is remarkable. Wait till you see the PS3 & NGP co-existence! It will be insane! We will see a single game simultaneously released & playing on all Sony gaming devices at the same time!
PS2/PS3/PSP/NGP/Experia Play!
Yeah that is four birds in one stone!

This is the reason why game developers head over heels over the NGP & Xperia Play it opened a flood gate of opportunity for their games to reach an even wider market even if they make just one game.

I have a strong feeling that one or two years from now smaller mobile gaming devices will be leaps & bounds more powerful than any PS4 we could ever hope for.

f7897904851d ago

Agreed even though it seems everyone wants MORE!!!

Sony loses money on new consoles and devs hate learning new consoles. The only motivation for making a new console is to compete with MS. It's a standoff now on who will pull out the next console.

PS3 is still selling very well, they have no need to abandon this generation right now. If they announce a new system before 2012 i'll be surprised. This could mean a number of things. them extending the PS3's life cycle (it's far from dead), or they could have found a better hardware route to take, and decided to drop their current approach in favor of something better.

cliffbo4851d ago

well you know my views on this

Dante1124851d ago

True, it only been like 4-5 years since the Ps3 dropped. More time, the better.

frostypants4850d ago (Edited 4850d ago )

The PS2 had only been out for a bit over 6 years when the PS3 was released. The PS1 had been out just under 6 years when the PS2 came out.

Based on their typical strategy, that pegs the PS4 release sometime between late 2012-mid 2013. I'd bank on it. And I'd also bank on them having a fallback plan should Microsoft announce an earlier release.

People keep mentioning the "10 year plan" for the PS3, but forget that the PS2 had the same thing. Just because they will keep selling and developing for the PS3 for 10 years does NOT mean they won't release the PS4 sometime within that timeframe.

lil Titan4851d ago

i dont think people are ready to see the lines of virtual and reality to blur, people are already amazed by what we have now. to bring PS4 out now would be overkill.

arjman4851d ago

@Epicor
I'm not a kid, I'm currently at uni, I just love saying frickin' and epic and all the like...

MostJadedGamer4851d ago

There is nothing at all surprising about this. The PS3 is still $299 it hasn't even hit its prime yet. Sony is not going to release the PS4 until they have recouped most of there investment in the PS3, and that is not going to happen until the PS3 has been at $199 or less for a couple of years, and sold a ton more hardware(Sony will make there money off software). We are a very long way away from the PS4. This should have been obvious to everybody.

hennessey864851d ago

i dont get it. Why wouldnt you want the ps4. Im seeing both the 360 and ps3 hitting there graphical limits. Granturismo 5 while a stunning game shows of the the technical limitations of the current hardware. Yes we have uncharted 3 coming later in the year bot seriously thats abour as good as its going to get. Im hoping for a e3 2012 announcment for atleast one of the next gen consoles.

Graey4851d ago

@ Hennessey

All consoles are going to push their graphical limits..and then the developers will break them but only by so much. It's a back and forth type of thing.

I wouldn't say people don't want a new console, its just at this time a new console would not be a good idea.

Think on it for a second if you will. If a new PS4 drops:

1. You would loose money dividing the player base, between the PS3,4 and NGP.

2. With the tech being new it would cost more to produce and as such you would pay more to own. Also sony would prob have to support 2 different online models.

3. There is also a Lull between when the console is released and when games are actually coming out on a regular basis. Look to have that happen for at least a year to a year and a half.

4. Complaints of people of the console being to high. Developers taking much time needed to perfect another system as they were just getting the specs and nuances of the PS3 down.

I really think you should reconsider your thoughts on a new console. I for one would have agreed with you if say this was the PS1 or PS2 going into the PS2 or PS3 lifecycle. But the graphics and all the other stuff put into games today. Just imagine what they would look like with that kind of leap again.

I think Sony since it's the only one of the 3 at this juncture that can rightly claim this. Doesn't want to bring something out past the PS3 as it would gimp their brand. Whether the PS3 would suffer or the PS4 would they are just making a profit, makes no sense financially atm to lose profit again.

Your probably looking at a loss equal or exceeding if they bring out the PS4. The PS3 is still in its juvenile life cycle at the moment.

I hope this helps clarify things.

hiredhelp4851d ago

IM not ready for a ps4 the ps3 is just getting warmed up.

joydestroy4851d ago

i agree, and i'm alright with them pushing the release of it back a bit more. means i'll get more out of my PS3

2013/2014 is perfectly O-KAY

Graey4851d ago

I agree.

Between 2013-2014 should be a mention or a switch of consoles.

PS3 however should focus on keeping people tuned to it despite newness until at the earliest 2015 possibly 2016.

After that I would think people would be asleep on the PS3. What I mean by that, is people tend to lose the hype on things after a certain amount of time. I call this the sleep phase.

An Iphone, Windows 7, NGP they all have a hype and then sleep phase. Of course there are phases in between but were focusing on the part where people don't really think about the console any longer they just play the games. At the moment we are not in that phase as we are still having console wars, fanboyism, etc.

malandra4851d ago

PS4 is at least 5 years away

Graey4851d ago

Def. I don't think we'll see it for so many reasons until at least 2016.

Games however will keep the system alive, and that goes for MS and NIN as well. Their respective consoles will do the dame. MS makes sense going after kinect because if it does not they will have to then focus on a new console. People would expect a leap in graphics, etc.

That is very expensive. So why not try and innovate with what you have instead of just rebuilding and re branding on what does not currently exist.

frostypants4850d ago

There is nothing in Sony's or the industry's history that supports the possibility that the PS4 will be that far off.

ALL indications put it around 2013.

hiredhelp4850d ago

"They are betting the farm on PSP2 as they expect handhelds to displace consoles."

This sounds like history repeating itself. The same thing was said with Gameboy. However, today we also have smartphones. I think the misunderstanding here is not "handhelds" but smartphones will displace consoles. But this is a no brainer! Because everyone, including great-grandma, will have a smartphone in the next couple years. Nonetheless, a strong console market will be around for generations to come. Even as smartphones become more comparable and prevalent.

Lastly, if this article turns out to be true, which I wholeheartedly doubt, Sony will be in for a rude surprise.

potenquatro4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

Are you people for real??? PS3 and Xbox have been looking outdated for a little over a year, and they both been technically outdated for YEARS now(and yes they're both preatty much the same regardless of wich one gives you a hard-on). You don't want better graffix or don't want to spend the money or think these billionaire development companies can't make games for next gen without jacking up prices? You don't know anything about this then. They're basically saying they're not going to cater to the hardcore anymore. Forget you guys, I've been gaming all my life. Spending a bunch of money on a new almost unsuported system is what all hardcore gamers have done since the beggining. You guys think this is the first time the world has gone through a recession?? IDK about anybody else but, If Sony, MS, Nintendo, hell it could be General Electric. If anybody anounces they're dropping a new console with crazy specs tomorrow, I'm gonna be right there to get it. It's what gamers do. All you pu$$ies saying- "It's cool take all the time you need" -are crazy and don't know the first thing about this business or how to enjoy it.

That's why you get people calling you "stupid fanboys". Never in my life have I ever seen such a shameless corporate co<k sucking bunch like the Sony fans. And I lived through the NES era(the only console to be worth going bananas for, since it litterally SAVED console gaming). You know how you get developers ready for your next gen console? By making it developer friendly, something Sony forgot how to do for 2 gens now. You know how to make a next gen console more affordable? By not adding unneccesary BS that they end up taking away anyway later down the road. You know how to get gamers pockets ready for next gen? By anouncing with enough time and not charging an arm and a leg for online.

This is why the western world is loosing it's prestige and place in the world... Because the wrong people are breeding. This comment section is full of examples. STFU and never complain for next gen coming sooner or aplaud next gen getting here later. Peace to all the REAL gamers out there, we're holding the torch for gaming right now, don't give up. These console owners are the reason PC gaming is making a come back.

The only acceptable reason for this would be... That PS3 is in last place, has been in last place, and have tried everything under the sun and... It's still in last place. But they're in last place because of their own doing. I doubt this is the reason, but if it is, they should say it. It's called being responsable to your stock holders(ENRON and Lehman Bros. anyone?) and fans I guess.

Bear_Grylls4851d ago

I agreed with everything until the last paragraph there man.

I don't know where you get this last place stuff from? It sounds like your listening to the wrong people on that one.

potenquatro4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

Sony is an incredibly huge company that makes the world go'round. I know Sony is making money out of the PS3, and, I doubt the reasons I stated in my last paragraph are accurate(as I my self stated in the very paragraph in question). But Sony, or MS for that matter, not openly saying they're working on next gen is worrying. And me personally would hate to see this with said companies if they don't attend the "hardcore" grievances, wich are, we want a new console sooner then later. That is what happened with me and Nintendo and their Wii.

frostypants4850d ago

First you say Sony fanboys are terrible. THEN you go and spout off a bunch of BS talking points right out of the Microsoft fanboy handbook.

Pot, meet kettle. Holy crap...

potenquatro4850d ago (Edited 4850d ago )

@ frosty

1- I talk about Sony, because it's a Sony article

2- Perhaps you missed the little jabs at MS in my rant like.... "You know how to get gamers pockets ready for next gen? By anouncing with enough time and not charging an arm and a leg for online." -MS launched 360 right after anouncement, with faulty hardware and it has an ever increasing unjustified online charge. A bad way to start a next-gen. And, MS is even more guilty of not having another console ready since it's about to be 6 years since 360.

It's imposible to comment here without being acused of fanboyism. But I try to explain myself since, I feel, my points are still valid.

Any actual points aside from misjudgement you'd like to talk about? Talk about me or others as much as you want. But talk with some substance, have something to say other then "your this and that".

Actually, the more time they take, the cheaper it will be. Nintendo does this. They design and develop the system until they feel good about it. Then they shelve all the designs until manufacturing it will be cheap enough. Sounds like Sony is doing the same. Everyone wants to make a profit on the hardware nowadays. Used to be, you sold console at cost and made all your money off software.

DeadlyFire4850d ago (Edited 4850d ago )

Honestly how big of news is this?

They shelved one project on PowerPC base and PS4 is dead or suspended. Not likely at all. Something better than PowerPC base was found. What? I am not certain, but Sony has something up its sleeves. Its possible Larrabee 2.0 What? Yes its coming. Noone is suspecting it though. Larrabee 2.0 + Intel based CPU + PowerVR 6 GPU? Its all speculation, but this news post to me equates to nothing. Just people jumping at every little word without acting on facts.

I am still expecting PS4 at E3 2012. Any sooner or later will be a shock to my system, but I can handle it.

joeorc4850d ago

I think instead their going to go with Arm on the next playstation Home console design.

the reason being the New Arm designs will take advantage of the Server's gerared to run game centric network's on the Arm platform, an since those will also support the mobile space such as the NGP, many Smartphones, tablet's. better connectivity between the NGP an the PS4 an the Xperia Play through the "playstation suite" would be ideal in gather developer's basic on one big unified game platform with 3RD party developer's being able to gear a software game dynamic that will work on million of devices that are not just tied to only one companies hardware platform. because it will work on many
company's Hardware.

showtimefolks4850d ago

so we won't need another one till atleast 2014

what you think sony will just stop making PS brand when ps3 is also on pace do sell over 100million

3 consoles in a row 100 million plus
psp did over 60million
ngp if priced right will do huge numbers too

people make big issues out of small things. sony should not be in a hurry about ps4 when a lot of people still have not gotten their ps3's yet let nintendo and MS go first learn from their mistakes and make another great console

But I disagree you can't have masterpieces of games such as Mass Effect, Battlefield etc... on mobile devices.

thats about right

xTruthx4851d ago

PimpHandHappy4851d ago

but let me say

in 3 years we will start seeing and hearing about PS4 and about 2-3 years after we will see it on market

PS4 in 2015 is a slight maybe

HappyGaming4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

No way will I be playing games on a PS3 till 2015...

I am sorry I love my PS3 but I am not going to be playing games on 9 year old hardware.

PS4 by 2013 at the latest or I jump back to PC gaming.

Compare the PS3 to some quality PC exclusives today and you can see that the PCs are on a different gen. By 2013 PCs will be even further ahead at a fraction of the price.

Playing on PS3 in 2015 will be like playing PS2 in 2009 when many games around the level of Crysis were being released there is no comparing generations of consoles.

DevastationEve4850d ago

I agree with gumtrol 100%, but that's the thing about consoles. They have longer lifespans and longer periods between hardware evolutions. But the nice thing is that you're going to get games from all of the best developers, and they all work harder to make newer games look better every year to compete with each other.

BrianG4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

People confuse "life cycle"

10 year life cycle does not mean the product is out for 10 years with no successor for that 10 years. It simply means that product is supported for 10 years.

A good example is the PS2, which is what, in its 11th year? It's life cycle was 10 years at first. It has since moved through the cycle into decline, but is still going.

The PS3's release did not mark the end of the "life cycle" for PS2.

malandra4851d ago

but they never said that PS2 was going to have a 10 year life cycle

the earliest possible for the PS4 will be 2015

2012 NGP is released
2014 PS4 is announced
2015 PS4 is released

Alpha_Gamer4851d ago

They are going to release the PS4 during the PS3`s life cycle. The thing is, PS3 is easily going to last longer than 10 years, so who knows when it will release.

I`m not pining for new consoles at all, especially a new Playstation. I really don`t feel like buying new hardware and waiting even more for the software to pick up pace, sorry, not interested. I know some of you want to count those pixels, but not me, I want a massive library.

Graey4851d ago

Thank you Alpha.

A true gamer speaks. At its current rate we should not see a PS4 until 2015-2016. Are technology is getting to that phase where it's being replaced to rapidly. No need to invest so quickly if your going to just bring out something new in 4 years.

potenquatro4851d ago (Edited 4851d ago )

@Graey
That is one of the saddest staments I have ever read about gaming. Please go play with dolls or something. Just stay away from video games before they actually start listening to people like you.

dabri54850d ago (Edited 4850d ago )

I understand the reasoning behind this but you have to realize that this is how it is with every system. If you buy it close to launch you normally have to wait a few years, closer to mid life to start seeing games really take advantage of what the system does. If you expect to buy a system and right away get games that use 100% of the system, then you are prob used to buying systems a few years into its life cycle. Just because you waited and just bought your system recently doesn't mean its new. Just because a new system comes out, doesn't mean you have to buy it either. It doesn't mean the previous system will stop being supported. New systems have always come out about 6 years after their predecessor. This is the Norm. It's not like other tech that gets a new update once a year. Feel lucky for that. It's time for new systems. If they aren't announced at this years E3, Ill be disappointed. Please note, I said announced, not released this year. Just announced.

dabri54850d ago

They've been saying 10 year life cycle since the PS2. The PS2 was out for 5-6 years before the PS3 came out. But the PS2 was supported up to and past the 10 year mark. That's what they mean. It doesn't mean that another system wont come out until after 10 years. Why do people keep bringing this up?

DeadlyFire4850d ago

They said the same thing about PS2. It has had 10 years now and its time for it to die! Time for PS3 to take 2nd place to the PS4. Its the way of life. Get used to it.

PS4 will be announced no later than E3 2012. Doesn't matter what is said or not. No later than E3 2012. You will hear certain news on the PS4 by E3 2012. Just wait and you will see.

Omegabalmung4851d ago

We really dont need a new console for atleast 3-4 more years

dabri54850d ago

No. Just because you waited so long to get your PS3 doesn't make it any less old. How about this. PS4 can come out next year and you can wait again, to buy it close to the end of it's life cycle.

The PS3, like the other consoles out, is old. Its been out for 5+ years now. Every console before it has had a cycle of about 5-6 years before the next iteration was released. It has then been supported past that point, thus the 10 year life cycle.

Games like KZ3 which, if the PS3 still had untapped power, should have improved upon its graphics over the previous game. The only improvements it did make, required GG to lower the resolution of the game. That's not tapping more power from the system. That's prioritizing power that was being used in one area to improve another. They are about as good as it will get. If you are OK with that for the next 3-4 years, then wonderful, but don't speak for everyone else. You are in the minority.

Omegabalmung4850d ago

Actually I had my ps3 since launch.

but I really dont feel like arguing.

I believe that there's always more to do when it comes to making games better, but obviously there's still going to be the same limits as before. A 52 card deck no matter how you shuffle it will still only have 52 cards, and they'll always be the same ones.

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

"AI is not a substitute for human creativity. We position it as a technology that supports creativity. Creativity resides in people. We will continue to contribute to people's creativity through technology," the CEO said.

...not yet but 100% within the next 10 years!

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai5d ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander19724d ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot4d ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19724d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz4d ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Progress is inevitable. Nobody driving cars today is complaining that the horse and buggy is no longer around. Yes, some jobs will be lost but guess what? With innovation comes new job opportunities. It's how the cycle of the job market works.

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers33d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken33d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing33d ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H933d ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola33d ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn66933d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle33d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos34d ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola34d ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me
