Gaming: Let the franchising end.

Okay, let me start by saying this; I can remember back in the days of the good old Sega and Nintendo systems, back in the early 90's when I could look forward to some unique game every month, something quirky something innovative. It had its sequels but developers were never afraid to be creative and influential in their deliverance of content to the consumer.

Now in the present day.

The Activision-Sierra incident highlights what I'm talking about. Gaming is going the way of film, merely being franchised. If film studio execs decide a directors movie will fail, it gets canned, regardless of the fact it may end up a hit with the watching public. We're now seeing it in games, creativity being throttled at the hands of companys wishing to monopolise. More commonly known as Sequalitis.

What can be done about it?

Developers need to take a stand. There may be a business part of the equation, all gaming companies need to turn over some kind profit to survive, but it should not be at the cost of creativity, or innovation. Companies like Electronic Arts and Activision should not be able to have the power to control the industry. It limits the independence of developers and producers alike.

We have the PCGA for PC Gaming, why not a Developer Alliance for the console industry. A group of high profile developers allying together financially but retaining their company independence. It's not without given possibility that this could prove viable in this industry, there is still time.

If something isn't done soon, there won't be any room for indy developers, or independent gaming companies in this industry anymore, and it'll crumble to the point of the way film has taken itself; 5 or 6 studios retaining dominance and independent films big-screen opportunitys almost thoroughly dwindled.

It's time action was taken.

This is why you gotta respect martin scorstase. He makes a movie, exactly how the F he wants to make it regardless to what the mainstream appeal is. I dont even like half his movies but the fact he does what he does earns a hell of a lot of respect from me.

If things keep going the way they do, piracy will destroy these big businesses and eventually give power back to the creative minds who built these goddamn industries.
