Hot and Naked, behind the doors of a PS3

Ever wondered what that shiny black machine you have proudly sitting on your shelf looked like on the inside. TechRepublic have an interesting article in which they slowly dissect a PS3 with images for every step. Have to say, "check out the fan on this baby!". There's some serious cooling in there to keep all this technology running nice and smooth.

I'm stunned that the entire system is cooled so efficiently by just that 1 cooling fan (huge though it is).

You can definately see that a lot of thought has gone into the design of the unit, very nice.

Apart from Microsoft being a software company, the 360 was rushed to market.

It's as simple as that.

Microsoft had no console once nVidia stopped making the GPUs for the XBox, so they were forced to get the 360 out quickly.

While the 360 is a mess internally, the PS3 is a beautiful feat of engineering.

The PS3 has no power brick, the Hard Drive is internal, the Wi-fi is internal, the optical drive is self loading and is only slightly bigger than the 360 and has no heating problems, just because Sony took care over the design. Hell, even the touch sensitive buttons are a nice touch.

This article is exceptionally old... hell there was a video on youtube(two of them, each around 9 minutes long) of a bunch of japanese guys taking apart a PS3 before it even came out.. People are approving this either because they wanna see this again, didn't read the article, or have never seen this before..

I, myself, have already taken apart my PS3 for fun... I'm weird like that. I dont care if it voids my warranty. I love to tinker with all my new gadgets and electronics. Countless old computer parts I've taken apart! x.x

Oh you're right about that, taking the stuff apart is fun. Did the same with all my computers to see how things are designed.

But really. There is an article in the approval section about the insides of the Elite. Has been on here also. It's old. So that gets reported and not approved. Strange to see this one is getting through though.

But it's more these days. Countless articles about BluRay/Warner, that are about all the same. Some PR war with Sony Defence Force posters is going on these days.

First of all, I can't believe I'm actually getting along with you considering I am a PS3 fanboy(to an extent, as well)... mostly it's just because I hate Microsoft. Anyways, I am getting tired of all the BluRay news and crap here. But here's my answer to your problem with the Elite thing.

My inner fanboy view: Pshh! Nobody wants to see that mess of a motherboard! It's fugly! AHAHAAH ITS GUNNA BLOW!!!!(too bad I've never actually posted a comment like that)

My real view: It's possible the 360 fanboys didn't want this(I haven't seen the article) solely because they're in some ways smarter than sony fanboys, but also can be more ignorant than sony fanboys(really it just depends on the person). I'd say both are the same but currently more "sony droids" are online, least the immature ones. Bleh I dunno what I'm saying now... just woke up... I got SimCity 3000 to work on Ubuntu Linux through WINE finally. Played it all night(grew up with the game, had to)...

It has to have a fan in there, i dont believe the whole system is cooled by that single i believe 120mm fan is cooling the entire system including the power supply.

which is a standard PC design (i.e. proven), but they didn't come up with an efficient way to push all that heated air in and out of the console, most likely due to the fact that Flextronics (the designer of both the Xbox and Xbox 360) had very little time to construct the 360. Just comparing the 360 and PS3 motherboards side by side reveals which engineering team was more talented and had more time given to them.

This is actually the weirdest but most impressive cooling system that I've seen in a long, long time. The heatsinks are horizontal and have a huge amount of surface area, so much that they actually extend out to the air vents! That big-ass fan helps as well.

When I then attempt to publish the same type of article concerning the Xbox 360 Elite from the same site published last month, it fails to get approved since its “OLD”.

This site is ridiculous since a year old article is considered news and gets more than 350 degrees, while a less than a month old article is kicked out because it’s old.

Could someone please explain the rules!!!

I would say that the article about the Xbox 360 Elite did not get much chance of getting approved since it was shot down in minutes by reports from N4G Editors who classified it as OLD.

Apparently, it automatically gets a "failed to get approved" after a couple of reports, therefore those interested in the article never have a chance of approving it!
