Epic Games Says New iPad Will Have More Memory, Higher Resolution Than Xbox 360 And PS3

"This new device has more memory and higher screen resolution than an Xbox 360 or PS3," Capps said.

NYC_Gamer4449d ago

As it should since the 360/PS3 = like 6 years old

fluffydelusions4449d ago

Yes...plus iPad still using archaic 4:3 resolution

mabreu4449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

iPad also has one major gaming flaw>>> No physical controls.

I'm glad Sony and Nintendo went ahead and made portable gaming systems. The world will suck if every portable game is only controlled by touching a screen or physically move the machine.

ZippyZapper4449d ago

^^^ accept for a USB port

@mabreu

there goes that theory.

So HD gaming has come to the iPad first before consoles....oh the shame! lol

mabreu4449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

@F7U12

Here is the biggest flaw of your argument and what I thought was obvious when you read my comment.

https://docs.google.com/spr...

207 compatible games out of 100,000+ games that are available work on this device.

kikizoo4449d ago

"So HD gaming has come to the iPad first before consoles....oh the shame! lol"

ridiculous, consoles and pc are doing hd gaming 720 and more since X years.

and don't dream, ipad 3 has a good screen, but it's not capable of doing 3D games running at 2000X...720P uggliest game on ps3/xbox/pc will put to shame best ipad game.

rezzah4449d ago

@F7U12

So your ideal world of touchscreen only gaming consists of analog only mechanics?

Must be a fun world of gaming in your head.

Even if they apply the other 8 buttons above the "analogs", where will the shoulder buttons go? And how accessible will they be during gameplay?

badz1494449d ago

wow that looks super comfortable! /s

Apple has just invented a new technology that out does six year old tech!

admiralthrawn874449d ago

and Sony and Nintendo didn't! 0.o

Raf1k14449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

Doesn't make much sense considering the consoles don't have a screen of their own like the iPad. Mike is saying the iPad's native resolution is higher than what the consoles usually pump out.

Comparing the resolution of a screen that's part of a device to a device that has no built in screen as though it's something to be happy about makes no sense to me.

edit: I'd like to see how well the iPad can run a home console style game like Gears or Uncharted at it's native resolution. Infinity Blade is a great looking game but only becuase it's camera views are very limited so that the iPad can put all it's resources into rendering only what get's shown.

grailly4449d ago

I'm just not sure any company would develop a high budget game that would control like shit and would sell for 5$ max

F7U124449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

No? Not even if you have 150 million dedicated customers all w/credit cards, all itching to buy the next new app/game?

And I think Gabe/Steam have proven that when you lower the price for your wares you make a bunch more money than you would at the regular price point.

BitbyDeath4449d ago

@F7U12, that's customers not gamers.
If anyone was to game on an iPad, it'd be casuals so it wouldn't matter what the game looks like just so long as it's simple and fun.

Hence why games like Angry Birds is popular.

Frankfurt4449d ago

Uh... GTA, Square's massive iOS only RPG, Infinity Blade and dozens of more games released far above $5 bucks. Square Eniz' game was 19.99 and was still number one in sales for the first month at least.

kneon4449d ago

@F7U12

Actually no, Gabe has said that pricing is perfectly elastic. If you cut the price in half you sell twice as much, but you still make the same amount of money.

grailly4448d ago

that's not what perfectly elastic means...

kneon4448d ago

Sorry grailly, I just used the term I remember Gabe using without even thinking about it. Yes it's the wrong term to use from an economics perspective, but he was saying it doesn't matter what they charge they always make the same amount of money.

F7U124448d ago (Edited 4448d ago )

@kneon

What? Where did I say that it didn't matter the price point? No what I did say is when they reduced....reduced the price point.

"In fact, it dramatically increased sales. Illustrating his point, Newell showed the results of a Left 4 Dead promotion Valve ran last weekend, which cut the price of the game in half to $25. The discount (and promise of new content for the game) rocketed sales of the game on Steam by 3,000 percent.

"We sold more in revenue this last weekend than we did when we launched the product.

Still skeptical? Newell said that a weekend sale of one third-party title drove that game's sales up by 18,000 percent and units-sold increased 36,000 percent. It energized the user base, says Newell. When the sale ended, baseline sales were double what they were prior to the weekend discount.

Discounting games does not only increase unit sales--it increases actual revenues. During the 16-day sale window over the holidays, third-parties were given a choice as to how severely they would discount their games. Those that discounted their games by 10 percent saw a 35% uptick in sales--that's dollars, not units. A 25 percent discount meant a 245 percent increase in sales. Dropping the price by 50 percent meant a sales increase of 320 percent. And a 75 percent decrease in the price point generated a 1,470 percent increase in sales."

Intentions4449d ago

Yeah, it's still crazy tho, that an ipad will have better or equal graphics/res/memory than x360/ps3.

xD

dedicatedtogamers4449d ago

As it should since the iPad3 will cost you at least $500 for a measly 16GB storage space.

Would be nice to have Skyrim on the iPad but that will never work.

Paradicia4449d ago

True.

Won't work without a physical controller :L

LightofDarkness4449d ago

There's really nothing to stop anyone from making one, or hooking one up. If they could make a DS3 driver for Windows, they can do one for iOS.

mabreu4449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

@LightofDarkness

Your right but I doubt Bethesda would put effort into making a game that only makes money off people who bought and iPad with X device that lets you connect an external controller which renders the iPad main selling point useless because it's no longer portable.

MySwordIsHeavenly4449d ago

You can plug a Dualshock 3 straight into the Asus Transformer and it works with the games. Seriously. The same goes for the Sony S1 tablet.

Most tablets accept the DS3 via root because of the bluetooth link.

Knight_Cid4449d ago

and yet with no controls and caps on shovelware you really cant do anything on it

KillerPwned4449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

Physical controls buddy....physical controls

The specs are amazing but A lot of us just cant get the use of playing a major game using only touch screen.

Example go play GTA 3 on any touch only device amazing game looks great but the controls are the weak point.

Sobari4449d ago

GTA 3 is a poor example, since it's a port of a game that was designed from the ground up for a physical controller.

MySwordIsHeavenly4449d ago

It seems to do just fine on my Xperia Play. :)

sourav934449d ago

It's possible for the the new iPad to actually "beat" current home consoles in graphics and gameplay. Hear me out.

What I wrote above would only be possible if a particular game is being rendered in real time on a server (like Onlive) and being stream to the iPad at it's NATIVE RESOLUTION. Then, just a ipad compatible wireless controller needs to be invented (like the onlive universal controller), then the iPad would certainly "win" against PS3/X360 as it is displaying the game at a much higher resolution. An issue is that streaming of the game at that resolution will require VERY HIGH bandwidth and broadband speeds, which isn't readily available to the majority.

Ergo, home consoles/PC ftw!

LightofDarkness4449d ago

Cool, but it won't have a faster/more robust GPU or CPU, so big whoop.

Plus, lack of a standard controller for these devices severely limits options for gamers. No developer is going to make a proper game that requires a pad to play because they'd risk fracturing/limiting their potential user base.

Apple needs to release a gaming attachment for these things if they REALLY want them to be taken seriously as gaming devices.
