5 reasons why you suck at shooters

Video game action games hold the players hands more than ever these days and if games were to strip away the aids where would that leave today's gamers?

Like the many driving games with their optional driving handicaps I do believe, and see, shooters doing something similar in the future.

Optionally removing things like the cross hair, checkpoints and adding/removing stamina metres allows for possible difficulty and accessibility and also opens it up to more players.

Games already do this, except removing stamina. I remember a game or two that took away checkpoints on hard level.

However most games offer the ability to remove crosshairs and aim assist, the thing is COD made it mostly impossible to use it. I mean I remember on PC back in the day we would all remove it because we could create an edge in our favor by not being randomly targeted to people. Today its like you take it off and you will get owned, no matter how good you are.

In Uncharted 3 crushing mode (recently beat it) during all the QTE sequences as well as just normal melee fighting you never see a "hint" popup. So the timing is based on the animation you see, and you better be quick because on crushing the big guys kill you in one hit :)

LOL... I actually did that when Gears of War 1 came out.

Halo already does that with optional skulls, you know: you can completely remove the crosshair, checkpoints, health regeneration and so much more like AI tweaks, half sized weapon clips, no motion sensor etc.
It also adds score multiplier bonuses when you do that to give another incentive for the hardcore players.

The old Rainbow Six Terrorist hunt modes were real intense for all the right reasons. No health, no respawns and one shot at killing all the scum bags. I miss those days.

People whine and complain about modern shooters, but then don't buy games that deviate from the norm. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and it's sequel Red River exactly sell for a record. Same with Serious Sam 3.

Let me tell you, Croteam and that entire Serious Sam franchise is so underrated. BUY IT, PEOPLE. IT IS OLD SCHOOL! Old school needs to be brought back...

And Operation Flashpoint and ARMA are just not getting the numbers they deserve. These are soem great games, AI missteps or not. And yet nobody buys them, they just feel like complaining.

I do suck at Battlefield, as much as I try with each entry in the series - must just accept the fact that I suck. I need to spawn with an atomic bomb or something.

go on forums, ask for tips, watch youtube videos, watch people during the spawn screen.

Fire in bursts generally.
find one gun you generally like then stick with it til you get the feel for it.
In tank go slowly, have an engineer, the way your turret is facing is the way you exit your tank
fully aim down your scope b4 starting to fire but dont wait too long.
If your having a bad game go be a medic and follow your friends around
go slowly and watch the battlefield but beware of snipers
shotguns are generally good for small maps
play supporting roles and such.
use the Mav and spy on people.
Be an engineer and be in the turret for your tanker and heal him up.
Setup soflams for engineers on Wake.

There are soooo many thing you can do to improve ur gameplay. Just keep workin.

My personal top three tips:

1. Find one class and stick with it.
2. Fire in bursts at long range*.
3. Don't use jets**.

*Unless playing as support and you want to supress a chokepoint (such as subway entrace on metro).

**Feel free to use other useful vehicles though, tanks can be especially useful (as they can be used to capture flags or help destroy mcoms, unlike the airborn counterparts).

Once you get good with one class, then learn another so you can switch it up depending on the situation of the battle. Although I do find support can act as a one man army, using C4 to blow up tanks and the M60 to mince through infantry (and as already mentioned, aerial vehicles are no threat).

I am the same way. I recently got KZ3 and when I play online I get murdered with an accumulated 29 deaths and only 9 kills. It is exactly the same on battlefield games except I think I do a tad better on those. For the most part I hate to admit it but I think I'm only good at the CoDz...I don't like the CoDz!!

I'm serious though. It took me like 2 years or more to actually get good at the game (In COD 4-6). It takes a while. Just whoever is doing the said actions are skill-less.

COD takes more patience an understanding than actual skill. Its still something that people work hard at gaining tho. Games like Halo and unreal probably take more skill. They both take practice tho.

I thought the 5 reason why you suck at shooters was:
1. Slow reflexes
2. Poor gun control
3. Lack of real-time logic
4. Lack of strategy
5. Lack of coordination with your team

Isn't this article saying that shooters are too easy/sucky nowadays instead of saying that people suck? Besides, I wouldn't want to die and start over. That puts me off from many a game. I think present day shooters are fine because I really only care for the MP. Great stories rarely come in a FPS (besides COD4-6 and were the old Halos good? Oh, and I hear that HL2 was good. Too lazy though.)

FPS evolved into a genre where everything is fast-paced and filled with adrenaline-gushing action to complement the fast-paced lifestyle we live in right now. Making a FPS any slower would turn it into some sort of RPG or something and that would require CO-OP or it'll be boring (I'm talking about Borderlands).

Whatever, this is all my opinion.

i think the writer of this article should play gears of war, it might not be a fps but it addresses a lot of things he's complaining about.

btw i think a lot of games wouldnt be fun if you would make it to realistic, imagine moving 1 feet per second in a fast paced shooter just because you took one bullet in your foot

to be really good in MP games you just have to put in lots of hours to be familiar with the maps, know exactly where the choke points are, etc. but usually by the time I put in about 20 hours I'm already bored with the game, MP games nowadays have only what 7 maps?

they kind of show it off in a goofy matter, but i like what they are saying.

i would love for a hardcore FPS to come out with, actually, ALL of the things they mention

would make for an incredibly immersive experience.
