Why Battlefield 3 Isn't as Good as Bad Company 2

Pixels or Death's Henry McMunn talks about his impressions playing Battlefield 3 coming off of the omnipresent high that was Bad Company 2:

"Battlefield 3 isn’t just serious, it is dead serious, and after hours of play it wears down on you. Everything that had potential for laughs and/or badassery seems to have been rationalized, dulled down or taken out altogether. To put it bluntly, there simply isn’t much thrill in Battlefield 3."

to be very honest and I mean to say ... very very honest ...BFBC2 maps were lot more fun than many BF3.

Back to Karkand, maps taken from BF2 ... they are lot more fun than any original BF3 maps ... u wanna know why ... because

1. They are not as big as Bad company 2, I mean to say open field (majority are city based maps - leaves u nothing but with alleys), and than there are those we do have big in size .. both in rush and conquest mode, point of capture are in really really odd positions (completely isolated - safehaven for campers), either they are placed tooo high on plateaus formin craters or tooo low for defenders ... and all u end up doin is get in close to the point and camp.

2. Its like you got all this tanks, gizmos, weapons and what not ... all you are left to fight is in claustrophobic place.

But anywayssss ... Im enjoyin B2K maps.

Almost exact opposite, I could never fly the chopper in BC2 and here I am doing very well in the Jet and Chopper on B3

which is fine...but basically his opinion boils down to a dislike of the tone of BF3...and nothing more...

but like it or not, that is exactly what DICE had to do with BF3...as PC minions were screaming for years that BC was a console joke that had nothing to do with the real series...and i think BF3 is a good blend of both overall...

and yeah, choppers are useless?...hardly...I agree jets are pretty pointless as far as winning a round for your team...but a good chopper pilot is a flying fortress, and can easily give excellent cover support for attacking squads...

oh well...i've liked them all...and like them all differently...BF3 isn't BC3...so his argument doesn't hold much ground...if he liked BC2 more, thats fine...although plenty of us were pretty tired of nothing but snipers...

What a load of crap!! I only have about 30hrs in and i have at least 7-10 stories i can already tell. In fact, three of those stories i had to call and tell my friends who don't even play BF.

BF2 was a great game, and BF3 is a new game of its own. you want the same game as last year, go buy MW....couldn't resist.

BF3 make you take a bit of a different approach. I have never had any trouble with campers. EVER!!!

Sure, Metro levels not the greatest, but i like that its in there for variety...you don't like it don't play it, i don't.

The choppers have gotten better, not worst. in BF2 i never got a chopper kill, I have 4 in my 30hrs in BF3 and 1, as a passenger gunner.

The Jets are awesome, now that i can fly the f@ck out of them! I actually grazed water and was able to pull up.

BOTTOM LINE: if you cant have amazing moments in this game, trade in your ps3 for a wii and enjoy dance dance revolution, im sure it will give you plenty to talk about.

BF3 is far and away better than BC2. And remember BF is geared more towards a realistic approach but not quit Arma while BC is the arcade type of action so therefore i can see why you prefer BC2 and it's arcade feel versus BF and it's more serious gameplay.

you can put 3 of BFBC2 largest map (Atacama Deserts) inside of Operation Firestorm! OP-firestorm with 128 players works just fine and is PURE chaos of joy!

Granted the infantry only maps i rarely play cause to me they feel like COD and that's not what BF is all about. I stick to the large vehicle maps in conquest mode cause this is the pedigree of BF.

Karkand alone is worth the price of admission.

I've played BF2. It was fun, but people forget the bad aspects of it: dolphin-diving with LMGs, the horrible menus (the server browser was/is a piece of sh**), complete lack of destructibility, bad hit detection, wonky weapon modeling, etc. BF3 is far more polished.

BF2 sucked. The ballistics of the guns were terrible, the maps were boring, and spawn camping was(and still is) the worst of any game I've ever played. Lets also not forget about the massive amounts of cheaters that play that game.

I agree about the humor/tone of BadCompany being better than Battlefield3. I like the more stylized and colourful design of BC2 over the grit thing that BF3 has going on. It kind of made BC stand out from other military shooters.
However, that is just a personal preference... and the previous Battlefield games have had the same kind of seriousness.

As for not having (m)any battlefield moments, I thought so too so I played BC2 again for a few rounds. From my experience, BC2 has pacing. There's down time where nothing much happens, and then there's the high-intensity times where it's a burst of action. The juxtaposition makes something like a building crumbling down as you barely escape seem much more exciting.

BF3 on the other hand, seems to be action almost all the time (might be due to me playing on 64-player servers, compounded by the incredible running speeds of soldiers). When everything is high-octane firefights and explosion, nothing memorable pops out... even though overall, there's a lot more cool stuff happening.

I did enjoy BF2's maps a lot more, there are just too weird for me. They build the maps with all the game modes in mind, I wish they would lock certain maps to certain gammodes so we can get some more amazing Conquest maps like they had in BF2.

I think it just goes to show you that so many people hate on COD but then they complain about BF.

I say COD is what most NON-strategic gamers should stick with!

as soon as Tactics and strategy are involved people can't handle it or they don't like it. COD is easy as burnt toast to play and suites most gamers with it's run n gun point n click game play.

BF3 is NOT that game. BF3 is several notches below Arma while COD is not even on the board.

I love Arma for it's realness and I love BF3 for it's pseudo-realness. You gotta out think and out aim someone in BF3 unlike COD where it's just a matter of ping and weapon and i think this is why more people enjoy the relaxed feel of COD over the intensity of BF3 and the grind of Arma.

Arma II, BF3, Nuclear Dawn, Red Orchestra 2 are my MP FPS favorites cause they combine a sense of realism along with intense action.

Yeah I have to agree with the other replies to your post.

Alot of ppl have fond memories of BC2 as I do. But tend to forget the BAD aspects.

Way to many ppl sniping and not being able to take down helicopters that just circled around while NUMEROUS ppl tried to take it out.

I had fun with BC2 but for the writer to say its better then BF3 is a stretch IMO. 2 different games ..2 different taste of the same genre.

As for the KD ratio. Give it some more time as time will weed out the KD only players. The hardcores will stick with the game and play it as intended!!

BF3 needs a learning curve, noobs should get the floor mopped with them then thrown down a flight of stairs into rusty nails. BC2 did this and it was grande. You got rewarded for learning by wrecking other players not with attachments or shiny ribbons or points, tho they were there they never got in my way because they were at the top of the screen or something most of the time.

Regarding the campaign of BF3, I agree that the campaign in BC2 was more engaging (thanks to characters we actually cared about and a touch of humor).

As far as Multiplayer is concerned, I'm LOVING BF3 just as much as BC2, if not even a bit more. Just the little things like being able to select your fire rate depending on the distance of the engagemnt, or being able to adjust your loadout on the fly during respawns to adapt to any battlefield situation. I always feel in complete control of my soldier and my tactical decisions when I play BF3.

Oh yea, I also def agree with asmith^^^^^^^ There do seem to be many more people in BF3 than there were in BC2 who don't understand "team play." My theory behind this seemingly sudden phenomenon is that, because EA's marketing campiagn leading up to BF3's release was so aggressive and so viral, I think it garnered the attention from meny folks who didn't play BC2 online or any BF game before hand. But seeing as it was touted as a "CoD Killer" I think a lot of folks became curious and picked it up on a whim. So in short, I think there are a lot of non-BF players who are running around in BF3 games, at times, ruining the team-play experience.

One thing I feel DICE should have added from the start are assignments. The reason why...giving players more incentives to drop med packs and heal etc...some may not even realize its for other players and NOT themselves to use all the time.

Assignments can in a way if done right can teach players what you can do in the game. Say for instance...some may not even knew you could disable or destroy a enemy vehicle with a repair torch (part of an assignment)

I feel that like you said you have alot of NEW BF players who STILL dont realize that it is VERY important to throw down MEd packs....and VERY VERY important to throw down ammo.

I have ran out of ammo so many times its ridiculous. When I play assault class. Anytime there is a battle etc...I drop down Ammo ALL THE TIME!!

That one grenade or rocket that person gets and USES could be the diffence of winning or losing a battle.

I myself have fond memories of BC2 on PS3 but I wouldnt go back as I am having as much entertainment on BF3 on my 360.

PS..give it some time and I feel team oriented play will increase. Hopefully they add more assignments.

I have to agree. I played battlefield 2: modern combat and it was a good game, but BFBC and BFBC 2 is when the series really shined on consoles. IMO, BFBC2 perfected the core gameplay for the series and they should of stuck with it(on consoles of course). The maps in BFBC2 are much much better also....have the time I feel like I am playing a bigger CoD map with controlled points of confrontation....DICE, STOP WITH THE CREATED CHOKE POINTS, it's killing your game....Harvest Day, End of the Line, Oasis <---these are perfection.

While I do enjoy BF3, I just don't like the way the game handles. I am not sure what it is. It just doesn't handle as well as BFBC2 did.

The other problem is the people playing the game. Most of the people blow balls and suck at team gameplay...they would rather sit on a rock and snipe....While BFBC 2 had it's issues with campers, it's more apparent in BF3 with the removal of destruction....I never had to deal with corner campers in BFBC2....if there was one, i would blow up the wall or hell, just bring down the entire building....

I hope for BFBC 3 they keep the customization that BF3 offers, but go back to the gameplay of BFBC2. That would be epic.

as much as i like destruction as well in BFbc2 it was overboard imho. even in war movies you never see them take out full buildings or you never see the building collapse and when you look at old war pics most building remain standing just F'ed up which is what i get in BF3.

Anyways Dice as much as i used to love them i kinda don't respect them as devs anymore. Kind of sad on my part i know but it seems every game since Bf2142 have gone down hill for me in terms of total package.

BFBC were a spin off sure but they were poor in there attempt to mimic just how special BF2 and other PC were. My favorite being 2142 personally but been a fan since 1942.

Never said anything about bugs for me personally there taste for what they want us to play doesn't match up with what we want to play anymore. Stll great games.

Thanks for the response i play on both PC and consoles. I still enjoy the game but DICE themselves make some moves that kinda guarntee being under MW and a huge one is party size and communication issues that were not that bad in old models. But w/e its there game they want to strive for 2nd best in terms of sold that's fine with me i still love the game more then MW3 but i still play mw3 as well.

Those two things were fixed in BF3 so I am a happy camper and now love BF3 way more

There's an undeniable fact that Bad Company 2 is actually MORE FUN. A testament to that fact is that 60% of my gaming time is still spent in BC2, while 20% is BF3 and the other 20% are other games like MW2, GTA, mostly Batman AC and such.

I play BF3 on console and I do enjoy it, but there are a few things that I would welcome a change for.

1) Gun progression stats for the different "equipment". For the life of me I can't understand how or why DICE thought it a good idea to force me to go to a website to see how much longer it would take me to unlock a tac light or laser sight. They have progression bars for other things in game...why not the attachments?

2) Flying vehicles... I know this will not be a popular opinion, but honestly Dice how are you the only game in town whose flying vehicles feel like you need a degree in Aviation to fly them halfway decently? I know its more "realistic" but honestly...its a game, and having all vehicles being accessible to even beginner skill levels would make this game so much more enjoyable.

3) Training level (for flight) or private matches? Seriously, I don't like thinking I am hurting my team by trying to practice my chopper skills or jet skills...but I know I am when I get in a chopper and my flight lasts less than a min cause as soon as I get to altitude I am shot down. Let me have a space to just practice with out consequence. I thought that was what the Single Player would be..but the QTE like flying sequences are hardly training.

There a few things i miss about past games... BF3 is better overall but the forced choke points in rush are annoying... unless your a defender... The game is definitely not as silly as bad company... And as time passes it gets even less silly... One of my favorite things was the russian medics crazy screaming and curses whenever he revived someone... he'd yell things like "GET A LOAD OF THIS YOU ASSHOLES" and "FUCK YOU MAN" and than they patched it 1.02... Atleast you still engineers yell things like "THOSE COCK SUCKERS ARE HERE"

This game is a return to the glory days of Battlefield, the things that made the series great. If you want your goofy physics and wonky weapons, then wait for the next Bad Company title. Also if he has only had one "Battlefield moment" then he is playing wrong. I have had far more in this game than in any other Battlefield game.

If they guy is playing on console then his complaints have a bit more validity, but I always tell people that the console version and PC version are like entirely different games.

I hate how if your a ground troop its stupidly hard to take out an helicopter or Jet and if your in a Jet basically all you can do is shoot down other jets.

Its like your in two different games, On one hand i can be in a jet with tons of kills (Or more realistically Vehicle destroy points) And my squad mate will be getting constantly spawn killed because the enemy team has captured all the bases.

I cannot have any affect on this unless i get out of the jet and the enemy team can not have any affect on me unless they get in the jet.

I miss battlefield 1942 where i could drop bombs onto the enemy as a flew above and they could shoot me down with A.A turrets.

Also is it just me or is Destruction 3.0 rubbish. In BF 1943 and BF-BC2 i could take out bridges and remove all the walls on a building only leaving the supports, On BF3 i can only remove certain walls and collapes certain building that really have no reason to be there other than to collapes them.

It seems as if DICE have done this because they were worried about allowing the players to alter the maps too much

There are certain elements that BC2 had that I wish they added to BF3. But overall IMO BF3 is better to me because it has alot of things that were lacking in BC2.

One thing that annoyed me about BC2 was...no server browser. And lobbies DID NOT fill up empty slots.

So say for example you just finished a match of 16 player squad DM. and like 4-5 players left. The next 2 matches would not add players into your match. ANd you would be left with 1. one man team 2. 2 man team and maybe like the other 2 being 4 man teams.

It was like that for other modes as well. In comparison other FPS when the match is over...empty slots filled up FAST. Not at ALL in BC2. At least with BF3 that doesnt seem to be a problem as empty slots get filled between and even DURING rounds!!

BF3 is a billion times better. For a start, it has some actual hit detection.

I can't stand the BC2 maps.. they're too small and they always slim down to a choke point or two

Im not knocking this guys OPINION>

But I was expecting a list of reasons to go along with his opinion. He stated nothing that makes BC2 a better game.

He felt it had more humor in it. Ok I agree with that. But what he failed to point out was being unable to take out srtafing (circling) helis. Or that everyone played the recon class!!

Im not saying he is wrong. but please list some reasons for making an article like this.

I have GREAT mempries of BC2 as many of us do. But IMO BF3 does everything BC2 did but better!!!

Also is it possible that this played the game TO MUCH?? 600 hours 45,000 kills!!!!

It may be that he is BURNED out on BF games and being that BF3 is similar to BC2 he may have just played it WAY to much.

How about this GUY waits for Bad Company 3...you know a true sequel to BC2 to compare the two games.

This is Battlefield 3!!!!!!!! A sequel to Battlefield 2....so hmm maybe im an idiot but of course its a different feel etc...its a a different game.

I can see this guy complaining if they made BF3 simialr in EVERY way to BC2. And writing an article how BF3 is to much LIKE BC2...and that he wants something different blah blah etc yadda yadda!!
