Hideo Kojima Says He Would Have Made Metal Gear Rising Slower and More “Bushido”

Kojima-san said that if he had made Rising, the outcome of the game wouldn’t be as speedy as the game they are making now, and in fact it would be a lot more Bushido-esque.

For reference, let’s take a look at the trailer for Rising:

Batmau54541d ago

I'm a fan of the direction Platinum's taking with Rising. AWAITS MAD DISAGREES AND LYNCH MOBS

Micro_Sony4541d ago (Edited 4541d ago )

I am also a fan of fast paced games like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and Vanquish.

PG will do this game justice, I know MG is Kojimas baby and he does not trust anyone with it but he should relax and focus on ZOE 3. PG are awesome and have created some gems this gen.

Edit 1 @Shunass - I have to disagree. All of the MGS games have been nothing but fantastic with MGS4 being the best game that I have played this gen - the man delivers so he is not overrated.

Edit 2: One thing that is bothering me is how people are trying really hard to downplay this game with out even having enough info on it.

Sure it not your slow based, stealthy MGS game but that does not mean that the MGS franchise and universe can not branch out into different genres (See MG AC!D).

I am sick of seeing these articles about Raising not being a MGS game and its going to fail. The game is going to be made and no amount of complaing will change that. Remember that Konami owns MGS and is the boss of Kojima so you trying to downplay this game only hurts the MGS franchise.

MGS5 will come but for now people should just let fans of MG and hack n slash enjoy this game and moment with out complaining.

MysticStrummer4541d ago

I am sick of seeing these articles about Raising not being a MGS game

It's not a MGS game, which they've acknowledged by dropping Solid from the title. Now Kojima says he would have done it differently which proves what I've been saying all along... he's barely involved in it's development. Rising is an action game that's cashing in on the popularity of Metal Gear. If that's cool with you, then have fun. Downplaying this game does nothing to hurt the MG franchise, but hyping it up potentially does.

ryhanon4541d ago (Edited 4541d ago )

@Mystic

Yeah, but Kojima saying he'd have done it differently makes literally no damn sense. I'm sorry, but Kojima himself established Raiden as a badass, crazy-fast, cyborg ninja in MGS4. To even suggest that a game with Raiden as the main protagonist would be a slow-paced bushido-like experience is crazy. It would have pissed off everyone that wants to play as the kickass Raiden we all saw in MGS4.

Maybe the game will suck, maybe it will be great. Who knows? We won't know for sure until we get our hands on it. But the bottom line is, if you're going to make a game focusing on Raiden after he became a super cyborg ninja badass, you had better make it fast paced and action packed.

Now, if Kojima had said: "If I made this game I wouldn't have named it 'Revengeance', I mean seriously, how stupid is that name anyway?" - I'd absolutely agree.

Edit @below

"If Raiden is a ninja, shouldn't he act like one sometimes?"

Point taken. However I'd point out that this is a pretty short trailer that isn't necessarily representative of the entire game.

And besides, the early footage was Raiden sneaking up on watermelons. It was Metal Gear: Fruit Ninja. I dunno about you, but that didn't get my blood pumping.

MysticStrummer4541d ago

I don't know, it makes sense to me. The early footage and info implied at least some stealth elements, but now the game looks pretty different. If Raiden is a ninja, shouldn't he act like one sometimes?

Fylus4541d ago

I don't like to think of Rising as an MGS game at all. It's just a spin off. Just like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel". People need to stop complaining.

GoToTheOptionsMenu4541d ago

Yes, but the thing is we already have those great speedy hack and slash games (ninja gaiden takes the crown though) and it would be cool to see a ninja game at the speed of mgs4 character movements. Mgs4 had slower movement which pushed me to be more stealth and I didnt just rush past the artistic graphics.
This game should have that stealthy feeling especially for someone like raiden who can explode at any second and then calmly walk away (like my wife XD)

kaveti66164541d ago

"Maybe the game will suck, maybe it will be great. Who knows? We won't know for sure until we get our hands on it."

People make up their minds about the game before they played it. All the superfluous information that we've read and heard about the game, such as who is developing it and Kojima's level of involvement is political and has influenced judgment. I myself think it's crap compared to the original E3 showing, at least aesthetically. Some say that the graphics took a hit because it runs at a higher framerate. While that is true, the guys behind SW:TFU2 came up with a method of smoothing animations while keeping their game at 30frames per second. Platinum Games should have utilized this tech, because the graphical downgrade compared to MGS4 and compared to the original build of MGSR is damnable.

Kurylo3d4540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

people call it a spinoff to try to justify how bad it is, but lets face it. It has one of the main characters from the metal gear solid series (The main character from metal gear solid 2).. and it is butchering his plot and story which was supposed to be finished in mgs4.

Plus its making him do things that are just impossible.. i dont care how strong you are!!! you cannot pick up a metal gear ray and throw it... you have not enough mass in your own body to pivot that kind of motion or stick to the ground. lol

All you people who like this sort of thing need to go back to playing a game as corny as bayonetta... metal gear is supposed to be real life mixed with technology. Not a sword that can cut through giant mechanical monsters.

SilentNegotiator4540d ago

"I am also a fan of fast paced games like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and Vanquish.

PG will do this game justice"

That was more or less a direct contradiction. Bayonetta's "Make a million pattern-less combos" hack n slash style doesn't match with Metal Gear. Vanquish's broken energy system that discourages getting close while having a boring cover system (that is usually broken by bosses anyway) and extreme shortness doesn't match up with Metal Gear. Easily the most overrated developer of this generation, if you ask me. Oh, and the much more competent (non-P.G.) Ninja Gaiden and DMC are nothing like MG.

So why will they do it justice?

"To even suggest that a game with Raiden as the main protagonist would be a slow-paced bushido-like experience is crazy"
-
It's coming from the man himself, so.....are you suggesting you know Metal Gear better than its creator?

showtimefolks4540d ago

Micro_Sony

actually Kojima himself chose PG to do MGR. AS a long time MGS fan i can tell you i am interested in MGR but i also have my doubts on what it will and will not deliver. PG are not known for doing great stories so a MG games need a strong story.

If and when i play MGR i will go into it knowing well that Its not made by Kojima so my expections will be low but hopefully OG game can deliver a total package great combat, great story and a well polished finished product.

DW744540d ago

GoToTheOptionsMenu,

We had that. It was called Tenchu. No one bought it. And that sucks. Was really hoping Z would be great.

STONEY44540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

Guys. Watch the long interview on the official Rising site. Kojima actually PERSONALLY picked Platinum games. Before, in late 2010, Kojima was ready to CANCEL the game. It wasn't coming along, and he basically told the team that they were taking too long and they had no sense of direction and weren't working together. He said the team was too scared to do anything without him.

So he contacted Platinum Games, gave them what was done with the project. 3 months later, PG shows them an alpha of the improvements they made to the game and gameplay and... just watch the interview. It's about 20-30 minutes of what happened to the old Rising, and how it got rebooted.

Their whole goal from the beginning was to be able to make a scene like the Raiden Gecko fight playable by a person. Kojima actually thinks that PGs style was exactly what they were looking for.

snipes1014540d ago

No shit Kojima would have given the game a more deliberate pace. When has he ever made a fast paced game besides Zone of the Enders? It's in his blood to make Tactical Espionage games.

How about we just wait for the game to come out instead of bashing it based off of one (admittedly) hyperbolic trailer? Oh wait, its teh internetz. Common sense doesn't apply here!

I'm not sure of the direction of the game, I just think the trailer was mediocre, at best. All those RE-SOMETHING, the same boring slicing, and then all that time for us to put together what they mean by REVENGEANCE!

It looked like one of the Robot Chicken 'trailers' they do to make fun of movies.

CrzyFooL4541d ago

After Bayonetta I trust P* to make another awesome game, even if this isn't the "Metal Gear" fans have been waiting for.

kaveti66164541d ago

It will be an awesome game for fans of the genre, of which Platinum Games are experts.

Brand recognition will lure in MGS fans and of course, they may be disappointed if they had expectations of a stealth-type game.

ryhanon4541d ago (Edited 4541d ago )

I agree. I think what Kojima is trying to say is "If I had made Rising it wouldn't look nearly as badass as it does right now. In addition to being boring and slow, it'd take control away from you every 20 minutes to play a 45 minute long cutscene to showcase my cinematic directorial genius! I AM KOJIMA BOW BEFORE ME!!!!"

*ahem*

Excuse me. Anyhow, yeah. I agree.

@below

As I recall, E3 2010 gave us a pre-rendered cutscene that did little more than announce the game. Oh yeah, then we got to see some watermelons get cut into tiny pieces - basically it was Metal Gear: Fruit Ninja. Only the most die-hard MGS fans cared.

It actually looks like a game now.

Also, regarding Kojima saying he'd have made it a slower experience... wtf? After everything Raiden did in MGS4 it wouldn't make sense for a game with him as a protagonist to be a slow "bushido-like" experience.

firelogic4541d ago (Edited 4541d ago )

Clearly you haven't seen the E32010 gameplay footage. MGR is a generic hack and slash now.

And what's up with the absolutely shitty animations for Raiden?

yesmynameissumo4541d ago

I kinda like the Kojima game you described more than the "Bayonetta with a dick 2012" trailer we saw Saturday.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI4541d ago

I don't understand how you can make a 'generic' hank n' slash game. There are barely any around...
Besides that this game looks like an action game, not Dynsasty Warriors-like hack n' slash. There's a huge difference.

MoveTheGlow4540d ago

Bushido Blade Solid! Make it so, KojimaSquareEnixBandaiValveetc ...

stevenhiggster4540d ago

It just looks like Vanquish but with a sword, especially the bit in the trailer where he slices the guy into a million bits.

So yeah if you liked Vanquish that's good. Personally it just went from a must buy to not interested.

I love how people think this game is now crap and generic based on a clearly deliberately over-the-top made trailer.

HacSawJimThugin4540d ago

I concur...PG has proven to be one of the best this gen and after seeing what they are doing with Rising, I'm even more excited. Who cares there is no stealth, this ninja doesn't need it. I'm so glad the muzzle is off and he will be allowed to go H.A.M on the world.

#YourDisagreesDontMeanShitToM e...Chuuch!!!

NeloAnjelo4540d ago (Edited 4540d ago )

I don't mind the gameplay elements and mechanics that Platinum games have in Risisng. The fast gameplay will be fun I'm sure as they are great at this.

My condern is the story. It was meant to take place between MGS2 and 4, and we were supposed to know how Raiden became this way in his quest to take on the Patriots... Also, at the end of MGS 4 Raiden was at peace with Rose, with him no longer being a Cyborg.
However, this takes place after MGS 4 which throws that idea out completely and doesn't fit in with that ending.

I will still pick this up though. I'd like to know why MG Ray is in the game and is it a new model... if so, who made it? The guy fighting raiden looks too much like Vamp (but can't be given the lack of his heat shot scar)

Give me the gameplay... but also a good Story.

ruiner44824540d ago

The thing I don't understand is the stupid name. Revengence??!? Are you serious? That is the dumbest made up word, EVER. It's worse than Infinite Undiscovery.

Andreas-Sword4540d ago

I think Metal Gear Rising is better than the other Metal Gear games!

Any MGS game has my immediate attention, but this game doesn't look like a MGS game and so far I'm not impressed. Hope things change and I am proven wrong.

FunAndGun4541d ago

to be fair, it is not a MGS game, it is a MG game.

WitWolfy4540d ago

I think he means he hope it has the same quality story line a typical MGS game would have. No use having a the Metal Gear Universe ruined by a spin of like Rising.

Godmars2904541d ago (Edited 4541d ago )

Kojima-san, I respect you and all, but don't you dare come in from the sidelines of this project now, especially when others have been working on from the actual beginning, to say how you would have done it.

Not that I wouldn't love to see a cyber-samurai game as apposed to the standard - if massively bloody - slasher this game now promises to be.

Kurylo3d4540d ago

Why cant he... he needs to distance himself from this project as much as possible. It may have kojima productions brand on it, but he wants to let people know he is not responsible for this peice of trash. I would do the same thing.
