Will Gaming Collector’s Editions Ever Be Worthy Of Collecting Again?

I cannot help but think that rarely any past truths concerning our hobby hold true anymore. For example: video gaming is exclusively for nerds, being able to return software as a result of the code itself being incomplete and broken, or(and perhaps most importantly) Collector’s Editions of games ACTUALLY offering reason to warrant coveting them. The latter is becoming more and more prevalent as developers and/or publishers try to pawn off valueless goods at a premium markup.

I think there are still a number of games / game companies that offer decent collector's editions. LittleBigPlanet 2 is getting (or at least so far the US version) a Collector's editon that is the first to take large notice from myself for a few years now. A plushie Sackboy, and special LBP game-ends. Nothing too spectacular, but neither is the price, and what they're offering is something that interests me and something that I think a lot of LBP fans want which is what's important.

Totally agree about art books too, I absolutely adore special / collector's editions that have them. It's a shame some nowadays are just full of renders or just very small.

all preorder dlc
a actually sackboy plush
and bookends for keeping your games arranged

for only 80 dollars

compared to just getting an art book or such with many other collectors editions for much more

IHateYouFanboys5018d ago

remember, those bookends are just cardboard though. its akin to giving you a few postcards.

the plush sackboy is good though, i agree. i recently found one (a plush sack boy) at my local comic book shop for $20! its the 10" one, and it looks fantastic.

i preordered the legendary edition of reach, and thats what i call a good collectors edition. its actually limited in numbers, and it is 100% relevant to the game.

the best Collectors Edition though is the Amazon only Gears of War 2 replica lancer bundle. its magnificent lol. i had to pay out the wahzoo to get mine though, $300 just for the lancer, as im in australia and amazon didnt ship it here.

Some still are.

Love my Fallout bobblehead and lunchbox. The fallout card deck for New Vegas isn't bad either.

LBP2 CE has some nice DLC and includes everything you would normally have to decide on from specific retailers.

Starkiller USB drive isn't bad with SW: Force Unleashed 2. It's a geek thing to pull out while I work.

In the end, it's all subjective.

The only collectors edition I bought that I was disappointed with was GoWIII. Cheap plastic and Styrofoam, then just a bunch of downloadable content and an art book (which I guess was the highlight of the whole thing)...I felt cheated. -.-

I'm usually picky on what the CE's come with, the hype just got to me on that one. Right now I have Reach, LBP2, and AC2 (The Doctor jack-in-the-box is what sold me) pre-ordered.

Collectors editions shouldn't contain some cheap plastic thing for showing off but rather a smaller piece which is limited... with Call of Duty instead of a remote control car how about a small metal gun. Wouldn't you agree if you could have a shelf of small metal pieces which shows what games you own.

For Mafia 2 a tommy gun or 50's car or a mini playboy in metal.
For Resistance 2 a Chimera
For Halo: Reach a Spartan Helment

You get the idea, I don't want large stuff to put in a closet, I'd like a shelf to display these metal figures of games I like.

How does that sound to you?

omi25p5018d ago

i like the models you get, like the gears of war character models, or the halo reach legendary edition model, the gran turismo model car, for me that makes a collecters/special edition, i thought a limited edtion was only available on day one and in game content that you could only get by getting it on day one.

But it must have an art book for me to bite. I loved Arkham, but i was a bit let down with the batarang. Cheap plastic, but im sure if it had been metal some kid would been hurt and video games would have been the cause of another senseless death.

Every single item mentioned can burn in hell, ESPECIALLY if they want you to pay more for it.

Infinite is a dumpster fire and as much as I like ODST, in no universe it ranks above Halo 2. This list is trash.

Kaii139d ago

Just exclude Infinite>5>4

ChasterMies139d ago

Best to worst: Halo 3, Halo 2, Halo Reach, Halo CE, Halo 4, Halo ODST, Halo Infinite, Halo 5.
