Rage Being Developed Like An Exclusive

PS Universe writes: When it finally seemed as though the days of underachieving multiplatform titles were a thing of the past, 2K Games had to shock the world by releasing Mafia II to PlayStation 3 owners. This ridiculous development blunder, however, is something gamers of all platforms apparently won’t have to endure with the upcoming title — Rage.

Tim Willits, lead designer at iD Software, has confirmed that thanks to the engine behind the game known as the iD Tech 5, the development teams for each platform have been able to create a nearly identical product across all three (PS3, PC, 360). Willits credits this achievement to the fact that iD Tech 5 has been built from the ground up this generation, thus it allows the teams to shape it to the strengths of each console it is being developed for.

Actually game runs the same on PS3, 360 and PC. Runs at 60FPS aswell.

Does this mean that the PC & PS3 versions of Rage will have the extra environment that they had to remove due to the 360's limitations? They originally had 3 different environments with missions spread across all 3 places but the 360 couldn't handle it so they removed the 3rd environment and spaced the missions from the 3rd environment in the 1st & 2nd.

the way id has been talking they really believe that all 3 versions of the game will be good on their respective systems and im starting to believe them. and i should really be happy with this on pc im looking forward to it

but then again, what game has been created for both platforms that clearly showed a difference in power between the two?

sadly, theres a lot of variables to consider before anything becomes credible or confirmed. Eyewitnesses testimonials would show that the PS3 leads in the gfx and performance departments, but how do you compare and contrast that to a another system where things like, games being forced to look equal and linear gameplay vs open world gameplay are being considered?

the point is, theres no surefire way to show that the ps3 is the optimal system eventhough those who own it clearly knows it is. im truly waiting for the one Multiplatform game that devs dont hold back on to show the shining difference between the two. devs had no problem popularly showcasing this difference in the last generation of systems. Why they choose now to subject the PS3 to the graphical limited fidelity of the 360 is beyond me when it didnt seem problematic at all in any other generation of consoles....

I can't honestly answer that because there's no concrete proof of anyone taking their game to the limits on all platforms.

While I could say that the Saboteur, with it's MLAA mojo on the PS3 going on would be an example, I could easily argue that Bayonetta, with it's better graphics and smoother framerate on the 360 could be an equally valid argument because you're talking about a developer taking a game to it's limits based upon their knowledge.

The only way to get over that is to compare the game to other similar games that were made and list the differences between an exclusive, a console multiplatform, and a game that was also on the PC and see if the technological specs hold up in comparison with the exclusive and PC extremes. From there, you can list what an exclusive has on one end with all of the filters, people onscreen, polys, framerate, and other factors and compare that to a PC game with the same factors, and then you can look at the multiplatform games and see if the PC has the most checks, then exclusives, then known multiplatform games. The amount of checks should always go in a descending order from PC's, exclusives, then multiplatform games.

But you also have to remember how many ppl in the world are really to grips with the ps3, only a handful the ice team.

What i dont understand is why sony internally are not reusing these engines for other games why not use the uncharted 2 engine to give syphon filter a reboot.

And whether they are sharing tech with 2nd parties like eat sleep play.

If it was being developed as an exclusive it would look better on PS3.

I say this because I've been heavy into my 360 games all summer since I got my 360 S, then I decided to pop in Uncharted 2 today and 360 games graphically don't come close.

If they have it running @60 frames on consoles looking as good as it does, then I know for damn sure that it will be running @60frames maxed out on PC. Nothing like 32aa to make a game look delicious.

I know there are a lot of cynical people on this post but it is possible if the dev actually care enough and have the right time window. Mafia II was a port if I'm not mistaken. It is a possibility that their engine just wasn't up to par with what they needed it to do on the PS3 (which is really their fault).

Apparently Id's engine is more flexible to handle this but Id is still going to have to decide, either they want everyone to have an equal experience on their respective console? Or do they want to deliver the best experience for each console? The second means that they'll play to each platform's strength's and cut out anything that the machine(s) can't handle, however doing this will piss a few people off but it might be a necessary evil and hopefully an evil that the community will understand (but they probably won't).
