Sony working on 3D TVs that don't require any glasses.

Barron's.com writes;

"Sony (SNE) today said it is working on 3D televisions that don’t require special glasses, the AP reports. The report follows news of a similar effort already underway at Toshiba.
The question is whether the companies can produce TVs with compelling 3D images at reasonable prices."

Cool, i will probably buy it with a PS4 :)

MicroSony4Life5018d ago

but Sony should not let people who are on the fence about the 3D glasses know this.

Coffin875018d ago

Isn't this old news? I thought it was common knowledge that every bigger company is doing research in this field.
I thought there were even one or two prototype-models for sale, for like 20,000 bucks or something.

InfectedDK5018d ago

Lol I'll get one in a couple of years for my PS3..
When I can afford one.. The PS3 will still have the power and games..
No need to wait for the PS4.

kneon5018d ago

Yes it's old news, every CE company in the world is working on this. It's a race to see who can bring out the first viable glasses-free 3D TV that doesn't cost $10k+. Toshiba claim they will start shipping this year, but made no mention of a price. They also didn't mention how many people can view the 3D at once, that is a major complicating factor in bringing these to market.

King_many_layers5018d ago

interesting. Can anybody find a link or such explaining how 3d works without glasses ??

I don't mean the current ones, I mean these glasses free ones ofcourse. ala 3DS

MisterAV5018d ago

they're researching so nobody know yet how to make many people view 3d on the same screen without glasses

sikbeta5018d ago

This Awesome and all, but SONY, I want a device with that Amazing Flexible Display already...

Coffin875018d ago

thx for the clearup!
..
what an awesome piece of news btw.

kneon5018d ago (Edited 5018d ago )

@King_many_layers

Basically it's like a dynamic version of the screen that will appear in the Nintendo 3DS. In the 3D I believe they are using a parallax barrier display to show each eye a different image ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... but there are other technologies out there. But you have to have your head placed at just the right spot for it to work. Because it's all static it's relatively easy and cheap to do.

Usually to adapt this to a TV they add eye tracking for each viewer so that the TV can detect each viewer's position and distance relative to the screen. This has to be accomplished with low latency in order to keep the correct image going to the correct eye, even when the viewer moves their head.

Then you have to make the 3D screen technology dynamic such that you can adjust for differing viewer positions, and this also has to have low latency to keep up with viewer movements. But you also have to make this work for multiple viewers, and each TV will likely have a fixed maximum number of viewers.

Because each eye is getting an image every frame then I assume that in order to display a 1080p signal to each eye the TV will likely have to have a much higher resolution than 1920x1080, probably 3840x1080. This isn't necessary when using the glasses because they can use the whole screen for each eye as they alternate between the two. If they don't go with a higher res on the glasses free TV then their "image guiding" tech will have to alternate between each eye of every viewer every frame.

BISHOP-BRASIL5018d ago

@King many layers

Back on article as to if 3DS would be using Sharp tech of naked eye 3D screen, there were info on how this work. The problem is for this to be viable, the one people watching it must stand on the exact point so the screen launch the images to the right or left eye, spot on. This tech Sony, Toshiba and everyone else is persuing will probably not be like 3DS screen, you can't sell a full TV that only support one person, that's only viable to portable devices.

Personally, I will wait before buying any TV. The last 10 years has been a nightmare for buying TVs, you simply don't know if what you are buying today will be able to run anything launch tomorrow. I mean, from 480i CRT TVs to glasses based 3D LED 1080p 120 Hz ones wasn't exactly a seamless transition, there were like 6 or 7 technologies that became half obsolete for TVs down this path, including Plasma, LCD, Retroprojection, 720i, 1080i, 720p, 60Hz and what not.

AndrewRyan5017d ago

Already had some models being shown last year. This is oldtimer news.

HSx95017d ago

I'm pretty sure these can mess up your vision due to the way your eyes will have to focus to visualize the 3D scenery.

BX815017d ago

Yep! You gotta wonder why anyone would buy a 3D tv that uses glasses when you can get one that doesn't require them. Maybe it's the feeling, IDK?

D without glasses? Not possible? Well, thats were early adopter's money is going towards. Research and development for 3D without glasses...on the big screens. Spend your life away early adopters, spend your life away. I've been called a poor bum for not wanting to spend such astronomical figures on an inconvenient experience. But who will be looked at as a sucker when 3D without glasses is available in the next year or two. The 3DS came out of nowhere with this feature. Technology is faster than most people think when it comes to advancement. 2-3 years is the new 10 years, lol.

"The 3DS came out of nowhere with this feature"

No it didn't. I played with mobile phone prototypes that had 3D screens about 2 years ago. It's not new technology.

I don't know any technical specs on how they would do this, but I'm guessing the output power to create the 3D effect would have to be A LOT in order for the 3D image to reach a certain distance and multiple viewers. This is a step in the right direction though, can't wait to see how they look

pain777pas5018d ago

This is good news. Leave the glasses for the movie theatre. At home I was tempted but then put the stake in ground and said if Nintendo can get it done Sony for sure has already done it and just wants to keep the market moving in stages to sell more units which all companies especially Apple do all the time.

KratosGirI5018d ago (Edited 5018d ago )

Interesting, but since I just bought a Bravia a few months ago, I'm not willing to get a new TV for a very long time.

walker015018d ago

OBVIOUSLY they are working on one, i bet that every large tv manufacture is working on them.. they have probably been working on them for years now.
Theres probably a few companies that may be involved with sony that are figuring out how the best way to make hologram tvs in the future.

TheLeprachaun5018d ago

I'd rather an LG or Samsung to be honest, but still quite cool. The more companies working on this technology, the better.

TROLL EATER5018d ago (Edited 5018d ago )

prefer sony or panasonic. but der darn expensive

pain777pas5018d ago

Agreed!

That's why I have a Samsung at the moment to be honest. I just couldn't justify paying $300 more for a more natural color. I love Sony products and will always research and purchase them first but man......Panasonic let me not even get started. Work for the company and you're going to be happy otherwise forget about. Panasonic amazing visuals on all their plasmas. Totally amazing!

sak5005017d ago (Edited 5017d ago )

Man I have Pansonic 50" 1080P plasma and it $hits so any sony TV out there. Samsung is 2nd number in amazing TVs. My old 2005 Sony GrandWega gave up the ghost already last year with screen now full of blue tinge. Will never buy any sony tv.

dragon825018d ago

I used to be the same way. I currently have an 37" LG in my bedroom. After buying my 46" Bravia I will never buy anything other than Bravia in the future.

TheLeprachaun5018d ago

I've got a sony bravia and it's great but in larger sizes I simply prefer LG/Samsung.

Hallmark Moment5018d ago

It will be awhile, Sony heard Toshiba's announcement and is doing a classic Sony thunder stealing move by lying about something when they feel they're going to lose market hyping prematurely. Toshiba is releasing one by years's end and Sony hypes this news just two days later while they scramble to get their tech on the drawing board. Sony does this in gaming all the time.

Baka-akaB5018d ago

or surpringly tv manufacturers back up every available technology with a potential to stick ...

Whow was even retarded enough to believe they wouldnt try a glassless tech ? Hell they will probably try to make it work with their consoles at some point

sak5005017d ago (Edited 5017d ago )

@hallmark HAHAHA + bubbs for this comment. You hit the nail. Forget consoles take the example of 3D which is more recent panasonic show cased 3D last year in one bit IT trade show either Cebit or something and planned to launch 3D TVs this year. Sony late as usual started their hype of 3D with Sammy and LG coming to market in april or may with 3D, few months Panasonic came and just recently Sony shows up. Same thing with much higher price. Design wise Samy is the best and quality wise same b/w LG/Sam and Sony while I've yet to check out Panasonic.

And now Sony is hyping it like it's their invention.

OtherWhiteMeat5018d ago

Have to agree with TheLeprachaun,Samsung makes a great TV.

If the 3d quaility is the same than this is great news. But if the 3d effect is limited then i would go 4 the glasses.

Nearly Half Of Gamers Play Video Games To "Express Themselves," Study Finds

Many players find it easier to express themselves while playing games. Yet, over half of the surveyed gamers still play to relieve stress.

H96h ago

I wonder what place made this study, and it's Fandom, no wonder half of the people said that, I find it hilarious that Fandom of all places did manage to pull more than 50% for the argument of playing games for self expression

phoenixwing3h ago

Honestly i don't believe this statistic. All we need is an executive to believe it and they'll focus more on how to "express" ourselves over good gameplay and further ruin gaming.

FinalFantasyFanatic2h ago

I actually just play to relax/have fun, get immersed in another world for a while and enjoy the story/characters, who the hell plays to "express themselves"? I can understand how that applies to say Minecraft, where you're actually making things, but I don't think you can apply this to most games.

It's an outstanding game and so was The Old Blood. Also a lost era of gaming. Interesting, I received a physical copy of The Old Blood 9 years ago today from Poland. It was digital only in North America initially upon release so I had to import.

Wolfenstein: The New Order - A Highly Rated FPS That Hasn't Stood the Test of Time

Wolfenstein: The New Order launched 10 years ago today, but can it stand up to the modern FPS titles it inspired?

Seth_hun8h ago

I disagree. Its still a fantastic game, with very good gunplay and a surprisingly loveable cast of characters and a good story trough many different and interesting setpieces

hiawa235h ago(Edited 5h ago)

All The New Order needs for my tastes is a this gen enhancement patch.

ChasterMies4h ago

I played New Order a couple of years after launch and I give it an 8/10. The shooter holds up because it is focused on being a good shooter. There is no crafting, no RPG elements, no open world find the question mark Weapons are fun. Enemies are fun. Levels offer a nice mix of stealth and shooting. You get to be the predator; this isn’t a game about fending off waves of enemies while a robot companion unlocks a door. Most importantly, New Order is the last of a dying breed of single player shooters.

Skuletor3h ago

Singleplayer shooters are still getting released every year, just look up "boomer shooters" and you'll find an an abundance of them. AAA fps campaigns, not so much.

Last year had Trepang2, RoboCop: Rogue City, Turbo Overkill, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, Dread Templar, Sprawl and more

Abear214h ago

Weird all the Wolfenstein articles.

Can you guess what will be announced at Xbox showcase?

DefenderOfDoom23h ago

What Machine Games did with Wolfenstein franchise is awesome. The game play definitely to me , is still very fun to play !!!
