Mafia II Review - Eurogamer

Eurogamer: "Mafia II gets the last word by destroying the myth that the mafia is interesting at all. It contends that the mob world is a hell of boredom populated by aggressively stupid automatons. These drones wake up each morning, carry out a series of repetitious tasks, and return home. The message: thug life is nothing more than it appears. And Mafia II is even less."

4/10 is the lowest score i've seen.

SeanRL5027d ago

The sad part is that they actually made a lot of good points. The game had a boatload of potential and they screwed up.

TOO PAWNED5027d ago

am i the only one that pays less and less attention to reviews? I already preordered this game, and can't wait to play it AND enjoy it.

callahan095027d ago

I'm with you TOO PAWNED. I thought the demo was a lot of fun, I played it multiple times. I never play demos multiple times! So that right there is a good indicator for me. I liked the cinematography of the cutscenes, the acting, the loose bit of plot we were exposed to. I liked the graphics, the setting, the controls, the combat, the mission design. I know I haven't played the full game yet, but I'm still extremely excited to play it later tonight.

I'm with you guys!

LALAALALALALALALALAL.... I'm NOT LISTENING....LALALALALALALA

Seriously, the game has tedious combat, little to do in its open world other than travel to the next mission, and poor AI.
Well deserved 4/10.

heroprotagonist5027d ago

Eurogamer has been handing out some ridiculously low review scores lately. They gave Kane & Lynch Dog Days something like a 4 as well. Based on both demos I played I can't see their scores making much sense.

Playerz85027d ago (Edited 5027d ago )

Kane and Lynch 2 was garbage, but Mafia 2 is definitely at least a 7.

Edit- Mafia 2 is 78 on Metacritic, way below expectations.

By the way, did Metacritic change the site? It's so white now. I liked the old site. This is generic and it's too busy.

TOO PAWNED5027d ago

White? Bunch of racists!

Chris_TC5027d ago

They gave the first Mafia a 4/10 as well. Anything they say can be safely ignored.

HydraxFFx5027d ago (Edited 5027d ago )

What is with these scores? I really hope everyone is wrong.

ElementX5027d ago

Well I'm no longer looking forward to this game. Boring combat and bland set pieces are a turn off. At least I just started Mass Effect 2 for the first time. That should keep me busy until something better comes out.

PrimordialSoupBase5027d ago

Speaking of bland combat and boring set pieces...

Krugsy5027d ago

hmmm, I still think this score is a little too low, but because of the general consensus amongst reviewers I just might give it a rent first. Better safe than sorry.

il-mouzer5027d ago

I'll reserve final judgement until I play it, but the reviewer sounds like he/she utterly missed the point of the game. One should also note that EG gave the first Mafia the same exact score.

Mafia I, was broken in ways that I couldn't even describe, it never tried to be a GTA clone and it was still an unbelievable experience - the story alone was worth the buy.

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya488d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled488d ago (Edited 488d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney488d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled488d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist487d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin488d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled488d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE488d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi488d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE488d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
