PushSquare: Mafia II on PlayStation 3 Demo Impressions

PushSquare: "“Take out the fucking fat guy,” our partner declares as we point a sub-machine gun out of an upstairs window. Just moments earlier we’d been knocking back coca-cola while perusing a copy of Playboy magazine. Such is the life of a gangster."

I liked it, dunno about the lack of blood, i mean, when u shoot sum mofo in the face with a shotgun u would of thought there would b little blood splatter

But yeah, i shall buy it

treeson475041d ago

are you telling me that there isn't any blood splatter? it's sterile? this is a problem. for a mature rated game where the original had some of the best blood splatter, and now nothing? i really hope they just took it out for the demo or its an early build or something, because a mafia game without blood is like a racing game without a gas pedal.

HelghastKid5041d ago

Good preview, i pre ordered it last night, cant wait.

SeanRL5041d ago

Is the demo out yet? Wasn't there gonna be one for xbox and ps3?

Raendom5041d ago (Edited 5041d ago )

It's out for PC, Xbox Gold members and PSN+ members. Silver/PSN- members need to wait for tomorrow.

MGRogue20175041d ago (Edited 5041d ago )

... or Europeans/UK'ers can make themselves a US PSN account & download it from the US PSN store sometime later today. :D

I loved how you used a - sign. :D

I hope they fix the frame rate
Has terrible

get2sammyb5041d ago

PS3 or XBOX? It's a bit choppy on the PS3 but not a huge, huge issue. It stays in and around 30FPS for the most part. Tearing is a bigger problem, but even that's ignorable y'know.

I think I can look past some of its technical short-comings. Have to see how the full game plays out though.

raztad5041d ago

"Sadly, shooting is mapped to the R2 trigger (when will developers learn?) and there doesn’t appear to be a way to change it. A small gripe, but we’ll keep whinging about it until developers get the picture."

Port spotted. Mafia 2 looked interesting but I dont like the smell of ports. Gonna wait for a good price drop.

get2sammyb5041d ago

From what NeoGAF are saying, the PS3 version runs a bit better than 360 but obviously much worse than the PC. I have only tried PS3 so I don't want to compare to be honest.

I can only talk about what I saw on PS3 version, and besides some technical issues, the controller mapping is my biggest gripe with the game right now. And we all know how minimal that is.

If you're concerned, I'd just wait for the inevitable comparisons, but don't let controller mapping put you off! It's got the signs of a good game. Hopefully it carries out through the whole campaign.

52pickup5041d ago

I played both the 360 and PS3 Mafia II demo and i agree with NeoGAF,both have frame rate issues, but I did notice more tearing on 360 demo.

Hopefully most of these issues have been ironed out for the retail game.

All in all though, the demo was enjoyable and I haven't even been following this game at all,but the demo was great and i've pre-ordered. I just hope the reviews are good enough for me to keep my pre-order.

raztad5041d ago (Edited 5041d ago )

Ok. Thanks for your replay. I'm gonna think a bit more about it. I know I'm buying the game, the matter is when.

I seriously hate L2/R2 mapping tho. It feels so awkward but I reckon it is something you can easily to forget if game is quality stuff.

Comparisons are kinda worthless to me because I dont own a xbox and I want the additional content that comes bundled with the PS3 version for free.

It is not how good the PS3 performs in comparison with anything out there, it is how good the PS3 version performs, does it drops frequently and tears? that happens a lot when game is a port.

EDIT: I went to Neogaf for some impressions and people seems to be excited because the PC version is very well optimized and running quite well in old hardware. LOL, PC development is always driven by brute power, not like in consoles where everything has to be optimized. Good thing this game runs well in the lower end of PCs.

The PS3 versions seems to be quite good as well. This makes me actually very very happy. Game is coming closer to a must buy, day one. Looking forward to the demo.

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya488d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled487d ago (Edited 487d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney487d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled487d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist487d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin488d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled487d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE487d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi487d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE487d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
